He prepared two jumper cables and connected the positive and negative terminals of the batteries of the two cars. He kept his car’s engine running, and then tried to start the car. After a few tries, Zein finally started the car. Zein then suggested that he follow her home to make sure she wouldn’t face the same problem again. For the next 30 minutes, he drove behind her, providing a sense of security. They arrived at her home safely, and Heginbotham felt a wave of relief and gratitude.
Heginbotham warmly invited Zein into the house for a drink. They had cookies and tea and engaged in a heartfelt conversation. Two strangers who really had known nothing about each other became pretty close. Heginbotham shared that she worried about aging without her husband and wondered what she would do next. Zein, in turn, shared stories of his own life and how his faith had guided him through difficult times. Their conversation flowed easily, and they discovered many shared interests. They became good friends and remain friends today. Heginbotham realized that sometimes, a simple act of kindness could change a person’s day and even their life.

Here are four of the best theme parks in Florida so you can start planning your next trip.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Home to over 50 tourist spots, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is an animal-focused theme park with an emphasis on keeping rare animals. Here, you’ll find the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, Montu, as well as the area’s largest zoo, with over 200 animal species. One of its newest coasters is the heart-stopping Iron Gwazi which goes up 206 feet in the air and reaches speeds of up to 76 miles per hour.
Magic Kingdom Park
This park set the standard for the Florida theme park industry we know today when it opened in 1971. Today, Magic Kingdom Park bridges the old with the new, inviting guests to experience the stories of childhood again and enjoy favorite attractions, like Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s also the home of Disney World’s newest ride, TRON Lightcycle / Run, an exciting roller coaster.
Legoland Florida
Themed with the brightly coloured bricks, Legoland Florida is the place for the next generation of excitement seekers, home to entry-level roller coasters and kid-friendly spots. The park’s newest spots include Pirate River Quest, a boat ride through the former Cypress Garden. While the spots may focus on younger guests, this is really a park for everyone.
Universal Studios Florida
Inspired by the greatest moments from entertainment history, Universal Studios Florida is a movie and television-themed park that began as an actual working studio. Several lands pay homage (致敬) to typical sets, including San Francisco and New York. This is also where kids can find The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Diagon Alley, one of the most impressive theme parks ever built.

Running has always been my way to just breathe. It used to be that when I ran, my body sped forward, but my mind found a rare stillness, making me feel strong, grounded, clear- headed and free.
That changed during the third year of my undergraduate when I was deeply hurt by someone I trusted — someone I considered a friend. Almost overnight, I withdrew from the social person I once was. I felt I needed to find a way to deal with it on my own. Running late at nights and in early mornings became my shelter from that bad memory. I was searching for a cure in the ache of my muscles and the burn of my lungs. I ran faster and harder, thinking that maybe if I abused my body, the pain would go away. I pushed distances and limits I had never tried before. That fall, I signed up for a full marathon.
I remember the moment my right knee gave out 4 months into my training. A sharp pain hit. I collapsed and cried, releasing tears I had held back for months. I could no longer put pressure on my right knee. Gradually, as I recovered, I started running again. To my surprise, I felt a shift, subtle (不易察觉的) at first. My runs, once fuelled by pain, became quieter. The road didn’t demand as much from me. A small, barely heard voice inside me said, “Enough.” I no longer needed to run for the hurt. I had learned to live with it, and to carry the pain without letting it consume or define me.
I switched to running a half marathon to allow my body to recover and began running alongside friends and joining women’s running groups. When I crossed the finish line, it wasn’t a release but rather a recognition of the strength I had always carried. Unstopping. I felt like myself again. It taught me to pause, to ask myself what I run for, and to learn to be kind to the body that carries me every step of the way.
24. What made the author avoid socializing?
A. The need for running. B. The search for freedom.
C. The pursuit of a clear mind. D. The harm from a friend.
25. Why did the author run faster and harder?
A. To ease her suffering. B. To train her muscles.
C. To unlock her potential. D. To fight for a marathon.
26. As for running, how did the author feel after her knee’s injury?
A. Excited. B. Challenged. C. Relieved. D. Disappointed.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Love is a verb. Act it out.
B. Think twice before you move.
C. You hold the seed of your rebirth.
D. Success is built on focus, not fear.

Elephants and gorillas in the Republic of the Congo’s rainforests spend a lot of time hiding in the shadows — or so we thought. Using drone (无人机) surveys and AI processing, scientists have discovered an extensive network of mysterious open clearings among the trees. Animals like elephants, gorillas visit these muddy areas, called bais, in the languages of the Indigenous Ba’Aka, to search for vital nutrition and maintain their complex social networks. The numerous playgrounds are visible in satellite images, and AI analysis is helping researchers find them more effectively.
The discovery began in 2021 when Sylvain Ngouma and Evan Hockridge came upon a massive clearing during fieldwork in Odzala-Kokoua National Park and found a trail (踪迹) of wet, pot-sized footprints leading through the woods to the open roundabout. Hockridge, who had thought bais were abnormal, says, “I had it backward. It kind of hit me when I was there. You can’t understand animal interactions without first understanding bais.”
For the next three summers, the team investigated the clearings. They analyzed camera-trap images, confirming what local people had told them — that these natural clearings are crucial gathering grounds for some of the world’s most endangered mammals. The bais, they realized, are big melting pots, big playgrounds, for a collection of forest animals.
During the initial surveys, the team followed elephant trails to move through the rainforest from bai to bai. This process led Hockridge to wonder about a network. Although previous studies documented animal behavior in selected bais, no one had counted them or had the means to map their distribution. The team partnered with African Parks, using drones to scan known sites. They trained an AI algorithm (算法) to identify bais in satellite imagery, revealing 2,176 clearings in one park — 10 times more than previously recorded.
Bais are always near rivers or streams. Most are smaller than a city block, but few, at more than 100 acres, are bigger than some college campuses. “Bais are ultimately islands of resources, and animals produce these networks of trails to essentially navigate to and from a network of bais,” Hockridge says. The researchers’ map of bais, the first of its kind, is also a map of conservation priorities. “We find that a huge portion of the animal community depends on this unique ecosystem. These species don’t have alternative habitats other than bais,” Hockridge says.
The study is also a step toward solving the ultimate mystery: How did bais form? Many ecologists have argued that a combination of hydrology (水文学) and animal landscaping is at play. But definitive proof remains elusive. Now, with a map in hand and camera traps still in place, the research team is tracking long-term changes, which have implications for the maintenance of these crucial animal habitats.
“We have hypotheses (假说),” Andrew Davies, an ecologist in Harvard, says, “but the short answer is: we don’t know.”
28. For rainforest animals, bais are places for ________.
A. fun and safety B. water and shelter
C. food and connection D. shade and entertainment
29. What can we learn about Ngouma and Hockridge’s research?
A. It discovered how bais formed.
B It was the first to map the network of bais.
C. It analyzed images of bais provided by local people.
D. It concluded bais were spots intended for endangered species.

In a groundbreaking discovery by Queen Mary scientists, bumblebees have been shown to possess a previously unseen level of cognitive complexity. The new study, published in Nature, reveals that these bees can learn complex, multi-step tasks through social interaction, even if they cannot figure them out on their own.
Led by Dr Alice Bridges and Lars Chittka, Professor of Sensory and Behavioural Ecology at Queen Mary University of London, the research team designed a two-step puzzle box requiring bumblebees to perform two distinct actions in sequence (顺序) to access a sweet reward in the end. Training bees to do this was no easy task, and bees had to be helped along by the addition of an extra reward along the way. This reward was eventually taken away, and these demonstrator bees subsequently had to open the whole box before getting their treat.
Dr Bridges emphasises the novelty of this study, “Other bees learned the whole sequence from social observation of these trained demonstrator bees, even without ever experiencing the first step’s reward. But when we let other bees attempt to open the box without a trained bee to demonstrate the solution, they didn’t manage to open any at all.”
This study demonstrates that bumblebees possess a level of social learning previously thought to be exclusive to humans. They can share and acquire behaviours that are beyond their individual cognitive capabilities: an ability thought to form the expansive, complex nature of human culture.
This research opens a new approach to understanding animal intelligence and the evolution (进化) of social learning. It challenges longstanding assumptions and paves the way for further exploration of the cognitive wonders hidden within the insect world, even suggesting the exciting possibility of cumulative (累积的) culture, the gradual accumulation of knowledge and skills over generations, among seemingly simple creatures.
32. How did researchers train the demonstrator bees?
A. By teaching them to share sweets. B. By opening the box for them.
C. By offering temporary rewards. D. By giving them easy tasks.
33. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Unique. B. Dangerous. C. Useful. D. Unknown.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The finding of the study. B. The abilities of animals.
C. The meaning of the study. D. The importance of social learning.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Origin of Human Cumulative Culture
B. Bumblebees Master Complex Tasks on Their Own
C. Social Interaction Is Critical for Mental Health
D. Bumblebees Surprise Scientists with Social Learning Skills

On New Year’s Eve 2022, Heginbotham, 86, was spending the holiday by herself for the first time. Her husband died in June.
Heginbotham was feeling blue. The silence was almost unbearable and made the room feel colder than it was.
To cheer herself up, she decided to work on her holiday cards and send them to her friends and relatives. She carefully selected each card, thinking of the joy they would bring to them. That afternoon, she drove to Bethesda’s post office to drop off the cards.
When Heginbotham was dropping off her cards, a kind-hearted man called Zein saw her and thought she was too old to handle so many cards. Zein approached her with a warm smile.
“Ma’am, do you need any help?” he asked gently. Heginbotham hesitated for a moment, feeling a bit embarrassed, but she was grateful for the offer.
Zein helped her fill in the addresses, chatting about holidays. Heginbotham felt a sense of connection, and she showed great gratitude to Zein by sending a holiday card to him as well.
When Heginbotham returned to her car, though, it wouldn’t start because of the battery, a problem she had encountered before. There were two jumper cables (跨接线) in her car. She just needed to connect the positive and negative terminals (正负极) of the batteries of two cars. After the connection was made, she kept the other car’s engine running, and then started her car with a dead battery. But she was too old to manage it herself. Her heart sank.
It was cold outside, and she realized that calling roadside assistance would likely take a long time, especially on a holiday. It was getting dark, and the thought of waiting alone in the cold made her scared. So she went back inside the post office.
The post office was nearly empty, with Zein and only a few workers finishing up their shifts. Heginbotham felt a bit embarrassed, but she knew she had to try.
“Does anyone know how to jumpstart a car?” Heginbotham asked.

Many people think it's easy, but actually it's very stressful. I usually arrive at the studio around seven AM. First, I meet with the producer and we go through the script for the day.
