Best Places to Visit for a Perfect Getaway
Spring is the golden season for traveling, with mild weather, blooming scenery and fewer crowds in many top destinations. Combining traveler feedback, professional weather analysis and travel experience, we’ve picked four amazing places that shine in spring, each offering a unique and unforgettable journey for different types of travelers.
Costa Rica
March and April bring consistent sunshine to Costa Rica, with daytime temperatures ranging from 25℃ to 32℃ — ideal for outdoor adventures. Travelers can challenge themselves with thrilling whitewater rafting on the country’s rushing rivers or explore the lush rainforests on guided hiking trails, where exotic birds and colorful plants are everywhere. Note that spring falls in Costa Rica’s peak tourist season, so it’s wise to book hotels and tour tickets at least three months in advance to avoid disappointment.
Yellowstone National Park, USA
As the winter snow melts gradually and the temperature rises, Yellowstone National Park comes back to life in spring. Baby animals such as deer, bison and wolves step out with their parents, making it a paradise for wildlife lovers. Hikers can walk on the well-maintained trails, keeping an eye out for grizzly bears and black bears that wake up from hibernation with their cubs. The fresh air and the sound of flowing water also make spring the perfect time to enjoy the park’s natural beauty without the summer crowds.
Puebla, Mexico
Located in central Mexico, Puebla is a city full of history and flavor, and spring is the best time to visit before the rainy summer arrives. As a UNESCO World Heritage City, it boasts stunning colonial architecture, including the famous Templo de Santo Domingo with its magnificent baroque design. Visitors can wander around the lively central square, visit world-class art museums, and taste authentic Mexican cuisine — especially the city’s signature mole poblano, a rich and spicy sauce that’s known worldwide. The dry and warm spring weather makes it easy to explore every corner of this charming city.
Lake Tahoe, USA
Straddling the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a year-round destination, but it’s exceptionally peaceful in spring. By mid-April, the ski resorts on the mountains have closed for the season, and the summer boating and camping crowds haven’t arrived yet. Travelers can hike along the Tahoe Rim Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the crystal-clear lake and snow-capped mountain peaks. However, it’s important to keep in mind that spring temperatures here are much cooler than in other spring destinations, with daytime highs often below 20℃ and chilly nights.
1. What do the four destinations have in common?
A. They all have a rainy spring season.
B. They are all ideal to visit in spring.
C. They all lie in the United States.
D. They all charge high tourist fees.
2. If you are a food and history lover, which place should you choose?
A. Costa Rica B. Yellowstone National Park
C. Puebla D. Lake Tahoe
3. What special reminder does the author give to travelers going to Lake Tahoe?
A. Book accommodation months ahead of time.
B. Prepare proper clothes for cool weather.
C. Keep a safe distance from wild animals.
D. Avoid hiking alone on the mountain trails.
B
On the summit of a mountain called Shishapangma, an 18-year-old Sherpa (夏尔巴人) climber called Nima recorded a selfie video. With this climb, he became the youngest person ever to top all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.
Once he descended, Nima shared the video online under the tag (标签) “Sherpapower”, spreading the message that his people were athletes in their own right, not just guides of foreign climbers. For nearly 120 years, Sherpas have served as porters and guides for foreign climbers seeking glory on the world’s highest peaks, which makes them so closely linked to this work that many Westerners mistake the word “Sherpa” for a profession, not an ethnicity.
During his first mountain climbing, an avalanche (雪崩) claimed the lives of his best friend, Lama, and his client on their summit push. He saw how Sherpas sacrificed their own safety and even lives to help others summit. It was at that moment that he began to use the word “sherpapower” with new purpose of being a voice for his community.
To achieve this, Nima has to be a professional climber sponsored by brands like the Red Bull. The brands seldom sponsor mountaineers who follow trade routes on fixed ropes. His 14-peaks record hasn’t been enough to earn sponsorships. But for him, sponsorships mean dignity instead of money. He had to explore new routes or peaks without bottled oxygen or fixed ropes. Therefore, two months after setting his record, Nima was preparing for his next project. Alongside famed Italian climber Moro, he was attempting a winter climbing of 8,163-meter Manaslu, which was eventually cancelled due to extreme conditions. Nima immediately planned another attempt on Manaslu for next winter with his partner.
It remains to be seen if Nima will be the breakthrough athlete he wants to be. After all, he’s only 18.
4. What is the common understanding of “Sherpa” to Westerners?
A. An occupation. B. An identification. C. A resolution. D. A proposal.
5. What does the underlined word “claimed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Spared. B. Guarded. C. Took. D. Sustained.
6. Why did Nima seek a different climbing route?
A. To compete with top-zclass athletes.
B. To qualify as a professional climber.
C. To build his fortune in outdoor industry.
D. To get recognised as an experienced guide.
7. Which of the following best describes Nima?
A. Determined and ethnically conscious. B. Carefree and strong-willed.
C. Straightforward and well-mannered. D. Modest and warm-hearted.
C
A person visiting an eye doctor for an annual exam sits in front of a desk-top machine equipped with a bright red headset and eyepiece. The patient is told to hold still while one eye is briefly scanned by an infrared light-based method that can image the retina (视网膜) with a matchless level of detail, obtaining high-resolution images within seconds.
This painless scanning technique, known as optical coherence tomography (OCT), is used millions of times per year in the US to identify eye diseases. But research suggests it may be used to detect early brain changes caused by Alzheimer’s disease, even years before symptoms appear.
Such an application is possible because the retina is part of the central nervous system and shares many of the same cells and structures of the brain. Numerous studies have found that many of Alzheimer’s indicators are visible in the eyes of people who have died with the disease. The features of Alzheimer’s can be detected long before cognitive (认知) symptoms appear.
Alzheimer’s disease begins slowly, with changes in the brain that can occur years, if not decades, before symptoms appear. To stop it in its tracks, we need early detection — ideally before the brain’s architecture is damaged. This insight has brought new urgency to the search for reliable biomarkers.
In recent years, researchers have made progress in developing blood and spinal fluid (脊髓液) tests that indicate the presence of Alzheimer’s features. For example, amyloid PET imaging, the current gold standard, uses radioactive tracers to detect harmful proteins in the brain, but it is costly and technically demanding.
As promising as new blood tests are, detecting Alzheimer’s in millions of at-risk individuals requires tools that are not only accurate but also affordable and scalable. OCT may meet these needs. As a widely available and widely applicable method of early detection, OCT could be practical for population screening in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, Japan, China, and South Korea.
8. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By describing a common scene. B. By presenting research findings.
C. By explaining a medical term. D. By comparing different techniques.
9. What makes OCT a potential tool for detecting Alzheimer’s disease?
A. It can create images of the brain directly.
B. It helps discover eye problems at an early age.
C. It reveals brain-related changes in the retina.
D. It tracks the progression of cognitive decline.
10. What is the disadvantage of amyloid PET imaging?
A. It cannot find early signs of Alzheimer’s. B. It is expensive and difficult to operate.
C. It produces inaccurate results easily. D. It relies on too many blood samples.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward OCT’s future application?
A. Neutral. B. Unclear. C. Critical. D. Optimistic
D
New research challenges the widespread belief that artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a major rise in global greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists from the University of Waterloo and the Georgia Institute of Technology analyzed U.S. economic data alongside estimates of how frequently AI tools are used across different industries. Their aim was to understand what might happen to the environment if AI adoption increases along its current path.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 83 percent of the nation’s economic activity relies on petrol, coal and natural gas. These fuels release greenhouse gases when burned. The researchers noted that total energy use from AI in the U.S. matched the electricity consumption of Iceland, yet this amount remained insignificant when viewed at national or global levels.
“It is important to note that the increase in energy use is not going to be uniform. It’s going to be felt more in the places where electricity is produced to power the data centers,” said Dr Juan Moreno-Cruz, a professor at the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development at the University of Waterloo and Canada Research Chair in Energy Transitions. “If you look at that energy from the local perspective, that’s a big deal because some places could see double the amount of electricity output and emissions. But at a larger scale, AI’s use of energy won’t be noticeable.”
“For people who believe that the use of AI will be a major problem for the climate and think we should avoid it, we’re offering a different perspective,” Moreno-Cruz added. “The effects on climate are not that significant, and we can use AI to develop green technologies or to improve existing ones.”
To develop their findings, environmental economists Moreno-Cruz and Dr Anthony Harding reviewed a variety of economic sectors, the types of jobs within those sectors, and the share of tasks that could potentially be performed by AI. Moreno-Cruz and Harding intend to apply the same approach to additional countries in order to understand how AI adoption may affect environmental outcomes across different regions of the world.
12. What is the primary goal of the research?
A. To promote the development of green AI. B. To measure energy consumption worldwide.
C. To warn about AI’s growing energy demands. D. To assess AI’s potential environmental effects.
13. What can be said about AI energy consumption in the U.S.?
A. It contributes to petrol-based activities. B. It will soon reach the global emission target.
C. It has small influence at the national level. D. It exceeds Iceland’s electricity consumption.
14. What do researchers plan to do next?
A. Extend their research to more countries. B. Shift focus to AI’s economic advantages.
C. Develop AI applications to stop emissions. D. Reduce the energy use of AI in data centers.
15. Which of the following is the main idea of the text?
A. AI technology drives greenhouse gas emissions.
B. AI energy consumption urgently needs regulating.
C. Data centers emit more than previously estimated.
D. AI’s impact on climate is much smaller than believed.

Marcus was the “problem” boy in class. While others worked neatly, he tapped his pencil and whispered sound effects. Once, he was so absorbed in drawing a fighting warrior that he even didn’t notice the math teacher’s questions. “Marcus, again?” his teacher would sigh, while his classmates exchanged amused glances and giggled. Nobody tried to get to know him. At break, while others poured out in noisy, laughing groups, Marcus slipped away alone to a quiet corner.
Deep down, Marcus believed he was simply not worth knowing — not smart enough, not neat enough, not anything enough.
Even Mr. Adeyemi, the new English teacher, had heard about the “problem” boy — until one Tuesday, during yard duty, he found Marcus sitting alone and bending over a thick, worn adventure novel. “That’s an interesting read!” Mr. Adeyemi said.
Marcus looked up, nodding eagerly. His whole face lit up and he started talking non-stop about the myths (神话) and heroes in the story. When the bell rang, Marcus closed the book and murmured quietly, almost to himself, “But no one ever cares about what I’m talking about.” He walked back inside alone.
In the weeks that followed, Mr. Adeyemi watched more carefully. Marcus always buried himself in reading — adventure stories, encyclopedias, myths from countries he’d never visited. He also noticed that when the librarian struggled with a heavy box of books, Marcus appeared and lifted it without being asked.
The following Thursday, Mr. Adeyemi stood before the class. “Today, we will finish a writing assignment,” he said, “you’ll work in teams to create a short adventure story which can be imaginary or real.” He had arranged the groups carefully. Marcus, Jake, and Sofia were placed together. Jake had a gift for choosing the right words. Sofia had a sharp eye for structure. Marcus, as Mr. Adeyemi quietly noted, was full of wild ideas and had read more myths and adventure stories than anyone else in the room.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. A

A. Neutral. B. Unclear. C. Critical. D. Optimistic
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11.

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】 At first, the three of them just stared awkwardly at the blank page. Marcus sat nervously, unsure whether to speak. Jake and Sofia looked at each other in silence. Gathering his courage, Marcus softly shared fantastic ideas from the myths he’d read. His rich imagination surprised them greatly. They soon started discussing excitedly, with Jake writing down wonderful ideas and Sofia organizing the structure. Working together smoothly, they finished the story perfectly.
The next morning, Mr. Adeyemi said, “I’d invite one student to share their story.” He looked straight at Marcus. Marcus stood up slowly, his hands shaking slightly. As he read aloud, his voice became steady and confident. The thrilling plot and creative imagination held the whole class’s attention. Everyone listened carefully and applauded warmly when he finished. His classmates looked at him with new admiration. For the first time, Marcus felt seen and valued, realizing he truly had something wonderful to offer.
