Experiment Principle
Why Does a Straw Look Broken in Water?
Light usually travels in straight lines through the air. This is how we normally see objects clearly.
Light travels at different speeds in different materials. It moves faster in air, but slower in water. When light slows down at the surface, it changes direction a little.
Your eyes see a shifted image
Because the light changes direction, it reaches your eyes from a different angle. Your brain thinks the straw is in a different place. So it looks like the straw is broken!
Daily Examples
In our daily life, not only a straw but also a pencil or a spoon appears broken in water.
What’s more, swimming pools look not so deep as they really are. This is a very important safety tip: never jump into a pool or a river just by looking at it from the bank, because it may be much deeper than it seems!

②There are many sayings about horses in Chinese. For example, “An old horse knows the way” tells us experienced people can guide us well. “A thousand-mile horse” means a very talented person. The second is the “Five-Flower Horse” from the Tang Dynasty. It is famous for its long, flowing mane (鬃毛). ▲ It has the running speed of the first horse and the beautiful long hair of the second horse.
④In the Chinese zodiac (生肖), people born in the Year of the Horse are said to be energetic and kind. During this year, families stick red horse paper cuttings on doors and say blessings like “Ride a fast horse to chase your dreams!”

Xujiadai, a small village in Zhejiang Province, has become China’s most famous baseball village by holding over 100 baseball and softball games. It sets a wonderful example of using sports to push forward rural revitalization (乡村振兴), turning the quiet village into a lively and hopeful place with just one creative idea.
Ten years ago, most villagers made a living by keeping pigs. The environment was polluted, and the village had no clear way to develop.
Everything changed in 2017, when Liu Jianqun became the village Party secretary He wanted to find a new way to improve the village. Liu found a great chance: Many business people loved baseball, but they had no nearby field. At the same time, the village had some empty land. So he came up with a brave plan—to build a baseball field there.
The first field was completed in 2018 and soon held its first big game. To everyone’s surprise, baseball became very popular. As the village became well-known, it held more top-level games. A new international baseball stadium (体育场) opened in 2025, making it possible to host great competitions for both young and adult players.
Baseball has brought great changes to Xujiadai. As more visitors come to watch baseball games, the income of the village has risen greatly, from 1.3 million yuan in 2018 to more than 6.9 million yuan in 2024. The village has built a new industry chain. It covers sports, tourism, food and farm picking. As a result, it provides over 500 jobs for local people every year. Baseball is now part of local daily life. For example, the village has a youth baseball team named the “Little Dragons”. The team has won many prizes and even took second place in an international competition.
Today, Xujiadai shows the world that with clear goals and hard work, a small village can achieve great success.

1. My aunt became a nurse in her _______ and she still loves her job now.
A. twenties B. twentieth C. twenty
【答案】A
2. Don’t be upset. Sometimes challenges can __________ the best in us.
A. bring out B. work out C. hand out
【答案】A
bring out使显现,激发;work out解决;hand out分发。根据“the best in us”可知此处是结构bring out the best in sb.“使某人表现出最好的一面”。故选A。
3. —Will you go to the movies tomorrow?
—If you don’t go, __________.
A. neither do I B. neither won’t I C. neither will I
4. ________ me to buy something to drink when we go to the supermarket.
A. Reminding B. To remind C. Remind
5. —Could you help me plan a day out in Lianyungang?
—You can try Donghai Crystal (水晶) Museum. There you can learn ________.
A. whether crystal is formed
B. how crystal is formed
C. what is crystal formed
whether crystal is formed水晶是否被形成;how crystal is formed水晶是怎样形成的;what is crystal formed语法错误(宾语从句需用陈述语序,此处为疑问语序)。根据前句“You can try Donghai Crystal Museum”可知,去水晶博物馆自然是为了了解水晶的形成方式,应用how引导宾语从句,应填how crystal is formed。

根据“Summer vacation is coming. The knowledge will prevent students from going swimming alone.”

III.

上文妈妈用“How was your school day?”
下文妈妈用“Yes, you can.”

Word bank

The second is the “Five-Flower Horse” from the Tang Dynasty. It is famous for its long, flowing mane (鬃毛). ▲ It has the running speed of the first horse and the beautiful long hair of the second horse.
④In the Chinese zodiac (生肖), people born in the Year of the Horse are said to be energetic and kind. During this year, families stick red horse paper cuttings on doors and say blessings like “Ride a fast horse to chase your dreams!”
⑤In a word, from ancient stories to modern life, the horse encourages us to work hard, stay true, and move forward bravely. Let’s learn from the horse-run toward our dreams with a strong heart, and keep going even when the road is long.
