Choosing where to study is a big decision, so we offer several ways to get to know our campus before you apply. Every year we welcome thousands of visitors, from curious school pupils to parents and even grandparents. Whichever option you pick, you will soon see why our students love calling Riverside home.
General Campus Tour
Led by a current student, this 90-minute walking tour covers our libraries, labs and sports centre. Along the way, your guide is happy to share honest stories about daily student life. Tours run every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 a.m. Booking is required, as places are limited to fifteen people.
Subject Taster Tour
Already know what you want to study? On this tour, a teacher from your chosen department shows you the rooms and equipment you will actually use, and answers any question about the course. It lasts about two hours and must be booked at least one week ahead.
Self-Guided Tour
Prefer to wander at your own pace? Collect a free map and audio guide from the Welcome Desk any weekday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Large-print maps are also available on request. No booking is needed, making this the most flexible choice for busy families.

When Mikaila Ulmer was four years old, she was stung by a bee twice in a single week. Most children would simply have learned to fear the tiny insect. Mikaila, however, became curious rather than afraid, and started to read everything she could find about bees. The more she learned, the more she realized how important these small creatures are to the food we eat — and how fast they are disappearing.
Around the same time, her family encouraged her to make something to sell at a local children’s business competition. Mikaila remembered an old recipe for lemonade in her grandmother’s cookbook, one that used honey instead of sugar. She decided to sweeten her drink with honey from local farms and to give part of the money to protect bees. That small stand was the beginning of a company she would later call “Me & the Bees Lemonade”.
What started as a child’s project soon grew into something far larger. Today her lemonade is sold in hundreds of stores across the country, and a share of every sale still goes to groups that work to save honeybees. Big companies that had once paid little attention to a young girl now lined up to place her bottles on their shelves. Yet Mikaila insists that money was never the point. “I want people to remember that even a kid can make a difference,” she says.
Now a college student and a published author, she travels widely to speak to other young people. Her message is simple but powerful: a problem can become an opportunity, and fear can be turned into purpose. Mikaila’s story reminds us that great things often begin with a single curious question.
24. (原创)How did Mikaila react to the bee stings?
A. She began to fear the tiny insect B. She wanted to make lemonade
C. She grew curious only about honey D. She became curious about bees
25. (原创)Why did Mikaila start making lemonade?
A. To use her grandmother’s recipe B. To join a local business contest
C. To pay for her college study D. To raise money to help bees
26. (原创)What do we know about her lemonade today?
A. It is sold in many stores B. Big companies now refuse it
C. It is sold only abroad D. All the money goes to bees
27. (原创)What would Mikaila probably advocate?
A. Earning money is the most important B. Making a difference matters most
C. Fame brings the greatest reward D. Old recipes taste better than new
C
Every year, people throw away millions of tons of clothes. Most of these clothes are made of polyester, a kind of plastic that can stay in the ground for hundreds of years. Burning or burying them harms the air and the soil. For a long time, scientists have looked for a greener way to deal with this growing problem.
In March 2026, a research team reported an exciting idea: using a special enzyme (酶) to “eat” old polyester clothes. An enzyme is a natural substance that can break large materials into smaller pieces. To build a more powerful “fusion (融合)” enzyme, the team combined two working parts into a single one. One part is able to cut the plastic, while the other helps the enzyme hold on to the cloth tightly. Working together, the two parts break the plastic down much faster than before.
What makes this enzyme special is that it can work well in hot conditions, which are close to those used in real factories. In their tests, the scientists put pieces of polyester cloth into warm water with the enzyme. After some time, the cloth slowly turned into simple building blocks. These blocks can then be used to make brand-new polyester, again and again, without losing quality.
This method has clear advantages. Unlike traditional recycling, which often produces materials of lower quality, the enzyme allows the same plastic to be reused many times. It also uses less energy and creates less pollution. If the technology is used widely, it may greatly reduce the amount of textile (纺织品) waste sent to landfills.
However, the scientists warn that there is still a long way to go. At present, the enzyme works best on pure polyester, but many clothes are made of mixed materials. Making enough enzyme for large factories is also expensive. The team is now trying to improve the enzyme and cut the cost, so that one day your old T-shirt might become a new one instead of waste.
28. (原创)What is the problem with old polyester clothes?
A. Hard to produce cheaply B. Too expensive to recycle
C. Hard to break down quickly D.Take much storage space
29. (原创)Why can the fusion enzyme work better?
A. Its two parts cooperate effectively B. It can produce more polyester
C. It sticks to the cloth surface tightly D. It cuts cloth instead of plastic
30. (原创)What can we learn from the text?
A. The enzyme has already replaced old methods B. The technology still needs further development
C. Mixed-cloth clothes are now easily recycled D. The cost problem has been fully solved
31. (原创)What is the best title for the text?
A. How Polyester Clothes Are Produced B. Different Ways to Solve Clothing Pollution
C. A New Enzyme That “Eats” Old Clothes D. Why People Throw Away Clothes
D
Around the world, more and more people are living longer than before. In some countries, the number of people over sixty-five is rising faster than ever. Many old people want to stay in their own homes instead of moving to a care center. But as they get older, simple daily tasks — like cooking, cleaning, or remembering to drink water — can become difficult. Their family members cannot always be there to help. This growing need has pushed scientists to look for new answers — one of which is a home-care robot named Stretch.
Unlike the human-shaped walking machines so often seen in science-fiction films, Stretch has a tall, thin body and a single long arm. Resting at its charging station for most of the day, it springs into action only when needed — moving quietly through the house on its own, picking up objects that have fallen to the floor, and reaching items stored on high shelves. What its makers stress, however, is that the robot is also designed to remind forgetful users, gently but regularly, to eat lunch or take their medicine on time.
What truly sets Stretch apart is its safety. Built from light, soft materials, it is engineered to work shoulder to shoulder with people, so that even an accidental bump will cause no harm at all. For the many families who must care for aging parents while holding down full-time jobs, the robot offers a much-needed respite: they are freed from constant anxiety over their relative who lives alone. As one daughter whose mother relies on the robot daily put it, “It gives my mother freedom, and it gives me peace of mind.”
None of this, of course, means that machines can take the place of human warmth. Stretch can neither hold a genuine conversation nor sense the subtle shifts in a person’s mood, and its high price still puts it beyond the reach of ordinary households. Yet as the technology matures and costs steadily fall, such robots may, within a decade, become as ordinary in our homes as the mobile phone is today — promising millions of older people not merely longer lives, but lives lived with greater comfort and dignity.
32. (原创)Why do scientists develop Stretch?
A. To replace all family housework B. To help old people move to care centers
C. To produce cheap robots for all D. To meet the care needs of the elderly
33. (原创)What can the robot Stretch do?
A. Fetch objects from the floor B. Walk freely like a human being
C. Store items on high shelves D. Drive its owner to the hospital
34. (原创)What does the underlined word “respite” mean?
A. A serious and growing danger B. A short break from worry
C. A heavy and tiring duty D. A sudden feeling of regret
35. (原创)What is the author’s attitude to home robots?
A. Hopeful but realistic B. Negative and critical
C. Doubtful and worried D. Curious but uninterested
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Some young people start knitting or doing simple handicrafts in their free time. Others grow flowers on the balcony or go fishing by a quiet river on weekends. These days, such hobbies of “the elderly” are no longer considered old-fashioned or boring. 36
According to Eventbrite, a global events website, baking and playing chess are becoming surprisingly popular among the young. In Britain, attendance at flower-arranging classes increased to nearly four times its original level from 2023 to 2025. In America, there were two and a half times more puzzle competitions than before. Even watching birds is now seen as a “hot girl hobby”. 37 But it was only around 60,000 in 2018.
38 They also start to admire their elders’ taste in home goods and fashion, such as clothes with flower patterns and old-style open-front sweaters. Some even travel like old people. People born in the late 1990s and early 2000s are just as excited about slow group tours as those who have already retired.
Why do the young seem so “old” at heart? Rudi Greenberg, an expert on youth culture, says Gen Z really loves the past and wants to experience things they never got to experience. 39 In an age of bright screens and endless apps, young people view boring little things like mending old socks in an unexpectedly positive way.
Such healthy activities clearly appeal to teens who are tired of their screens. 40 In these screen-free moments, their slow, face-to-face socializing feels far more genuine, just like chatting with one’s grandma, according to Mr Greenberg.
A. They prefer knitting sounds to sore eyes.
B. The popularity has decreased in recent years.
C. Most elders still stick to their traditional daily hobbies.
D. Gen Z has found that these hobbies are quite enjoyable.
E. In Britain there are now more than 450,000 Gen Z bird watchers.
F. A trend called “the old people style” is not only about fun activities.
G. Psychologists name this wish “a feeling of missing a past you never had”.

Tom was a thin, small boy in Grade Eight. He was not good at sports, and his thin arms and short legs made running especially hard for him. In PE class, he was always the last one in every race, and some classmates laughed at him. “Look at Tom, he runs like a turtle!” they said. Their words hurt him, and Tom felt sad, but deep in his heart he did not want to give up.
One day, the school put up a notice about the sports day. There would be an 800-metre race for boys. Tom looked at the notice for a long time, his heart beating fast with both fear and hope. Then he made a brave decision: he would join the race. His best friend, Lily, was surprised. “It’s a long race, Tom. Are you sure?” she asked. Tom nodded firmly. “I just want to finish it,” he said. “I want to prove to everyone that I am not a turtle.”
From that day on, Tom got up early every morning and ran around the playground, even before the sun came up. Lily often came to help him. She stood by the track with a watch and shouted, “Faster, Tom! You can do it!” Some mornings were cold and rainy, and Tom’s legs hurt badly, but he never stopped. Little by little, he could run faster than before, and a quiet hope began to grow inside him.
At last, the sports day came. The playground was full of students, and the air was full of noise and excitement. When the race began, Tom ran as fast as he could. For the first few hundred meters, he kept up with the others. But soon the stronger boys ran ahead, and Tom slowly fell behind. His chest hurt and his legs felt heavy as stone.

(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly, Tom’s foot hit a small stone, and his knee started to bleed.

【34 题详解】词义猜测题。根据画线词后“they are freed from constant anxiety over their relative who lives alone.(他们摆脱了对独自生活的亲戚的持续焦虑)”及下文“it gives me peace of mind(让我安心)”可推知,respite 意为“短暂的放松、喘息”,故选 B。A 项“危险”、C 项“沉重的负担”、D 项“懊悔”均与语境情感色彩相反或无关。
【35 题详解】观点态度题。末段既指出机器人“cannot take the place of human warmth(无法取代人的温情)”、价格高昂,又预期它“become as ordinary… as the mobile phone(将像手机一样普及)”并带来“comfort and dignity(舒适与尊严)”,可见作者态度积极而审慎,故选 A(Hopeful but realistic)。B、C 两项过于消极;D 项“uninterested(不感兴趣)”与全文的关注相悖。

【39 题详解】句间衔接(指代)。空前 Greenberg 指出年轻人想“experience things they never got to experience(体验自己从未经历过的事)”,G 项“Psychologists name this wish…(心理学家把这种愿望命名为……)”中“this wish”正指代上句的愿望,故选 G。
【40 题详解】句间衔接(代词)。空前“teens who are tired of their screens(厌倦屏幕的青少年)”,空后“In these screen-free moments(在这些远离屏幕的时刻)”,A 项以“They”指代青少年、以“knitting sounds to sore eyes”承接“远离屏幕”,故选 A。干扰项 B 与全文“流行上升”相悖;C 偏离“Z 世代”这一主体。

三、参考范文
Paragraph 1: Suddenly, Tom’s foot hit a small stone, and his knee started to bleed. He fell heavily, while the other runners passed him one after another. Tears came into his eyes, and for a moment he wanted to give up. Yet he recalled all the cold mornings he spent training and Lily’s cheers by the track. Slowly, he struggled to his feet and kept running step by step, his eyes fixed firmly on the finish line ahead.
Paragraph 2: When Tom finally crossed the finish line, the crowd burst into loud cheers. Though he gained no honor in the race, no one laughed at him. His classmates rushed over and lifted him onto their shoulders. With tears of joy, Lily cried out, “You made it! You’re not a turtle at all!” Tom glanced down at his injured knee and smiled. He came to realize that true courage lies not in winning, but in refusing to give up.
附录 听力录音原文
Text 1(第1题)
W: It looks rather cloudy this morning. Should I take an umbrella when I go out?
M: The radio said it would be sunny this afternoon, so you won’t need it. But take a coat, it’ll get quite cold tonight.
W: That’s a good idea. Thank you for reminding me.
Text 2(第2题)
M: Excuse me, how much is this nice blue shirt?
W: It’s 30 dollars. But today we have a special sale, so you can get it for only 20.
M: That’s a really good deal. I’ll take it, thank you.
Text 3(第3题)
W: Are you ready to order, sir? Our fish is very fresh today.
M: It sounds nice, but I had fish yesterday. I’ll have the beef noodles instead.
W: Good choice. Would you like a cup of tea?
M: No, thanks.
Text 4(第4题)
M: We need to be at the airport by three o’clock this afternoon. Shall we drive there?
W: The traffic is really heavy now. Let’s take the underground instead. It’s much faster.
M: All right. That sounds good. Let’s hurry.
Text 5(第5题)
W: What are you going to do this weekend, Tom?
M: Well, I planned to go fishing with my father, but it’ll rain. So I’ll just stay at home and paint some pictures.
W: That sounds like a nice and relaxing plan.
Text 6(第6–7题)
M: Hi, Mary. I heard you finally joined a club. Was it the art club?
W: I did think about the art club, and my brother kept pushing me towards the sports club. In the end, though, I picked the music club, because I really want to learn the guitar.
M: That sounds great. I’d love to join too, but I can’t play any instrument.
W: That’s no problem at all. The club warmly welcomes beginners, and our teacher is very patient.
M: Wonderful. Then I think I’ll come over this Thursday and just watch for a while.
W: Good idea. You don’t need to bring anything. We have plenty of guitars available for everyone.
M: Thank you. I can’t wait!
Text 7(第8–10题)
M: Good morning. I’d like to book a room for two nights, please.
W: Sure. We have a single room at 80 dollars and a double room at 120 dollars per night.
M: I’ll take the single room, please. Does the price include breakfast?
W: Yes, breakfast is served from seven to nine every morning in the dining hall on the first floor.
M: That’s great. By the way, I really want to visit the old town. Is it far from here?
W: Not at all. It’s only a ten-minute walk along the river. You can also rent a bike at our front desk for free.
M: A bike sounds fun. I think I’ll walk there today and try the bike tomorrow.
W: Good idea. The old town is famous for its long history, and the small shops there sell lovely handmade gifts.
M: Wonderful. I’ll surely buy some gifts for my family and friends back home.
W: Then don’t miss the night market either. Have a pleasant stay with us!
Text 8(第11–13题)
W: Hello, Mr. Black. Thank you for coming to the interview. Please sit down.
M: Thank you. I’m very glad to be here today.
W: I see you studied computer science at college. Why do you want this job?
M: I love designing websites, and your company is famous for that. I really want to learn from your team.
W: Good. Do you have any work experience?
M: Yes. I’ve worked in a small company for two years, but now I want a bigger challenge.
W: That’s a good attitude. The job sometimes needs you to work late. Is that OK?
M: No problem. I’m happy to work hard for something I really enjoy.
W: Great. We’ll call you next week with our decision.
M: Thank you so much.
Text 9(第14–16题)
W: Hi, Jack! Are you excited about the 2026 World Cup? It’s coming soon.
M: Of course, Anna! I’ve been waiting for this for four whole years. I really hope our national team can go far this time.
W: Me too. But to be honest, I care more about the new young players. They run fast and never give up.
M: That’s true. By the way, would you like to watch the opening match together at my home?
W: I’d love to, but my parents have asked me to look after my little brother that evening. Why not invite him too?
M: Good idea! The more, the merrier. I’ll prepare some snacks and fruit for everyone.
W: Wonderful. I can bring my own football, so we can play a little during the break.
M: Great. And the atmosphere is always amazing. Fans from all over the world sing together.
W: Exactly. Football really brings people closer, no matter where they come from.
M: Haha, you really love the game! Let’s enjoy every single minute of it together.
W: Sure. I believe this World Cup will bring all of us a lot of happy memories.
Text 10(第17–20题,独白)
W: Good afternoon, everyone. Today I’d like to share a book that changed the way I see the world. It is called The Long Walk Home, written by a young teacher named Clara. At first, I thought it would be just another sad story about a poor village. But as I read on, I found it full of warmth and hope. The book tells how a shy girl walks ten miles to school every day, yet never stops dreaming of becoming a doctor. What moved me most was not her success, but her courage to keep going when everything seemed against her. The language is simple, so even younger readers can enjoy it easily. More importantly, it reminds us that difficulties can make us stronger. I have read it three times now, and each time I seem to learn something new about life. It is the kind of book that you will want to share with a close friend. If you ever feel like giving up, please pick up this book. I promise it will give you the strength to move on.
