Amy was a sweet little girl. She often wasted time getting prepared to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she should do.
In the village, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruits of all kinds, including berries when in season.
One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, I noticed some fine ripe (成熟的) blackberries on Mr. Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents per kilogram for all you will pick for me.”
Amy was excited about the idea of making some money to help her mom, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Then she wondered how much money she would get if she picked five kilograms. After finding out that she would get 65 cents, she started to imagine larger possible amount, “Supposing I picked a dozen kilograms, how much would I make then?”
“Dear me,” she shouted, after calculating for a while,“I should make a dollar and 56 cents!”
She spent some time daydreaming about even larger amounts, and then it was so near lunchtime that she had to stay at home until the afternoon,
As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch and all the ripe blackberries had been picked. She could not find as much as half a kilogram to fill her basket. Then she thought of what her teacher often told her, “Do your task at once, and then think about it. One doer is worth 100 dreamers.”

C
Do you know that there may be hundreds of magnets in your home? Where are they? You can’t see most of them. But they’re inside your telephone, hair dryer and computer, and most of the electricity that runs these things comes from magnetism.
Magnetism is a force that can’t be seen. This force only pulls on some metals (金属), such as the doors of the cars or simply the keys, but it will not pull on the paper, or on the wood, either. Magnetism flows (流动) through a magnet. It goes in one end and out the other. These two ends are the north and south poles (极). The force flows out of the north pole and back in the south pole. You can use two magnets to feel magnetism. The north pole of one magnet will attract the south pole of the other one. If you try to push the two north poles together, you will find it is not easy! Two north poles will always repel each other. So will two south poles.
Magnets are used in many fields. One bank card can have millions of magnets. These magnets are tiny. Each tiny magnet points in its own direction. The different directions of the magnets make a code (代码). Computers read the code. Putting a bank card near a powerful magnet can mess up or erase the code.
Magnets are used to suspend (悬浮) some high-speed trains above the tracks. Instead of having wheels like regular trains, these trains in China actually fly as they travel. They travel at a top speed of about 267 miles (430 km) per hour. This makes for a fast, smooth ride.
Doctors use a very powerful magnet to look inside a person’s body. It helps doctors see the inside illness of the patients without having to cut them open.
Magnets are fun. They’re also really useful. Every time you watch television or even turn on a light, you are using magnets.

As we all know, it is common to sleep on a bed. When we go camping, we sleep on the ground. And sometimes we may have to sleep on a floor.
____36____ If I have a problem and cannot think of an answer, I can “sleep on it”. Often an answer comes to me the next day.
Let’s say some co-workers are working on a project together, and they run into a difficult problem. ____37____ One person might say, “Look, we’re not getting anywhere. So, let’s sleep on it. Tomorrow we can try to figure this out.”
To “sleep on” something means you give yourself time to think about a problem overnight. ____38____ For example, if I am writing a story and run into a problem, I often sleep on it. I think about the problem before I go to sleep and hope that my sleeping self comes to the rescue (救援)!
Sometimes we use this expression when we just want more time to pass. We also use it when we want to look at a problem with a rested mind. ____39____ Sometimes a problem doesn’t look so bad the next day after a good night’s sleep.
____40____ Some problems are not a big deal——they are not important. You can describe them as “nothing to lose sleep over”. And if you want to say you are not going to worry about something, you can say you’re “not going to lose sleep over it”.
So, next time, if you run into a problem with English, try sleeping on it! Maybe the answer will come to you with the morning sun.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。
A. Here is another sleep expression.
B. No one can think of a way to solve it.
C. But “to sleep on” has another meaning.
D. We know that sleep is necessary to be healthy.
E. And you plan to make a decision about it later.
【答案】36. C 37. B 38. E 39. D 40. A
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了关于与sleep有关的英文习惯表达。
【36题详解】
根据上文“As we all know, it is common to sleep on a bed...we may have to sleep on a floor.”和下文“If I have a problem and cannot think of an answer, I can ‘sleep on it’. Often an answer comes to me the next day.”
根据“and they run into a difficult problem.”和“One person might say, ‘Look, we’re not getting anywhere. So, let’s sleep on it. Tomorrow we can try to figure this out.’”可知,这里提到一个难题,没有人能取得任何进展,明天再试着解决这个问题。所以是没有人能够解决这个难题,B项“谁也想不出解决的办法。”符合语境,故选B。
【38题详解】
根据“To ‘sleep on’ something means you give yourself time to think about a problem overnight.”可知,此处提到给自己一整晚的时间思考这个问题,因此E选“你打算以后再做决定。”符合语境,故选E。
【39题详解】
