Marco Polo was from Venice, Italy. In 1271, at the age of 17, Marco went on a trip with his father and uncle to China. Today people often travel to different places around the world. But it was very hard for people from Europe to visit China then. After about four years, the Polos reached China.
While staying there, Marco Polo worked for Kublai Khan, the emperor of China. He was able to learn and experience many things that were new to Europeans. In his diary, he wrote, “Kublai Khan’s palace is the greatest I’ve ever seen. The streets of the new capital, Dadu, are so straight and so wide.” Paper money also took him by surprise, since it was not yet in use in the West at that time. Homes were heated with “black stones... which burn like wood”. Those stones were coal (煤), and most of the Europeans knew little about it then.

The US celebrates Valentine’s Day each year on February 14. Pictures of hearts, red roses and boxes of chocolates are everywhere. You could say that “love is in the air”.
Many other countries and areas celebrate Valentine’s Day, too, each in their own way. Here is a look at some Valentine’s Day traditions.
For South Koreans, Valentine’s Day happens in three parts: February 14, March 14 and April 14.
On February 14, women give men gifts of chocolate to show their love. One month later, on White Day, men show their thanks by giving women a sweet gift.
And on April 14, Black Day, single people who didn’t get gifts on February 14 or March 14 often get together to eat special noodles.
Unlike many European countries, the Welsh holiday is called St. Dwynwen’s Day and takes place on January 25.
The traditional gift is a love spoon (勺子). Beginning in the 17th century, Welsh men made beautiful spoons to show their love to that special person in their lives.
Today in Wales, love spoons are also given at weddings (婚礼), births and other celebrations.
Argentina gives a whole week to love in July. They call it Sweetness Week. If you kiss someone, they have to give you some candies.
Sweetness Week started in 1989. A candy company (公司) made an ad called “Candy for a Kiss”. The idea was to give the company’s chocolates and other candies in exchange for a sweet kiss on the cheek. It was so successful that it turned into a new holiday!

Because of his excellent performance, Hao Yongquan, 58, was chosen as Gansu’s most beautiful forest ranger(护林员) in December, 2023.
Hao has been a forest ranger for 36 years since he stopped serving in the army in 1987. He and his workmates at Guanyin Forest Farm are called the “forest eyes” and “green guards”.
“Daily work usually starts with patrolling (巡逻). Every morning, we carry necessary tools after having breakfast and then set off to forests with dry food and water bottles, patrolling until it gets dark,” Hao said.
Rangers have been living in the mountains and forests for years, getting used to difficulties and loneliness. They always go out early and return at sunset during the whole year, and their duty is to protect green mountains and clear waters.
A forest ranger often has to walk more than 12 kilometres a day, and a pair of shoes wears out in two to three months, according to Hao.
Hao Yongquan works at Liuping Forest Management Office. It manages 10,511.6 hectares. “Because of poor road conditions, if rangers go to the farthest villages for patrols, they have to walk 30 to 40 kilometres on mountain roads, climb four mountains, and cross more than 10 rivers,” Hao said. “And each patrol takes three to four days.”
When Hao returns from his patrol every day, he writes down the results in the patrol diary, recording his love for mountains and forests. “The environment is improving day by day, and that makes me feel my work is worth it,” he said.

1.—I can’t find my book. ________ it anywhere?
—I ________ it on the floor just now.
A.Did you see; have seen B.Have you seen; saw
C.Did you see; saw D.Have you seen; have seen
根据“…it anywhere?”
2.Hurry up! The match ________ for ten minutes.
A.began B.has began C.has begun D.has been on
现在完成时结构为“has/have+过去分词”,be的过去分词是been。
3.The new environmental project is ________, so we can expect more exciting updates in the future.
A.ongoing B.completely C.closely D.truly
【答案】A
根据“so we can expect more exciting updates in the future”可知,项目尚未结束,仍在进行中,空格处需要形容词作表语,ongoing符合语境。
4.When you are riding a bike against the wind, you will feel the air pushing ________ you strongly.
A.over B.against C.opposite D.through
over在…… 根据“When you are riding a bike against the wind”可知是逆风骑行,风会形成阻力,推测出空气是顶着或推挤着你,push against为常见搭配。
5.The little girl is ________ to go to school alone.
A.enough old B.old enough C.too old D.so old
enough old错误结构(enough修饰形容词时应后置);old enough足够大;too old太老;so old如此老。根据题干“to go to school alone”可知,表示“足够大”去做某事,应用old enough,enough修饰形容词后置,应填old enough。
6.The little girl became completely ________ after a bad illness, so she can’t see anything now.
A.blind B.deaf C.lost D.disabled
【答案】A

7.The old bridge ________ last year because it was unsafe.
A.rebuilt B.was rebuilt C.will rebuild D.has rebuilt
根据时间状语“last year”可知时态为一般过去时;主语“the old bridge”和动词“rebuild”是被动关系,所以此处使用一般过去时的被动语态,其结构为“was/were+done”,主语为单数,be动词用was,rebuild的过去分词为rebuilt。
8.—When ________ a fashion show ________ in our school hall, Millie?
—I’m not quite sure. I’m looking forward to it!
A.does; hold B.is; held C.was; held D.will; be held
根据答语“I’m not quite sure. I’m looking forward to it!”
9.I can ________ believe what he said—it’s unbelievable.
A.hardly B.nearly C.almost D.loudly
【答案】A

“Daily work usually starts with patrolling (巡逻). Every morning, we carry necessary tools after having breakfast and then set off to forests with dry food and water bottles, patrolling until it gets dark,” Hao said.
Rangers have been living in the mountains and forests for years, getting used to difficulties and loneliness. They always go out early and return at sunset during the whole year, and their duty is to protect green mountains and clear waters.

We hope to give a helping hand and provide support for these children. Let’s join hands to build a better and brighter future for them together.
Yours sincerely,
UNICEF Staff
