They shared their journey together and what they have learned from the world at over 80 years old on the Internet-and, more importantly, how they made it happen. The women's friendship began over 20 years ago on a medical trip in Zambia, Africa. Later on in Texas, both women found themselves like traveling around the world. So the pair started their adventures together to "far-flung (遥远的) places" two decades ago, but it was their latest, most ambitious trip that brought them to the world's attention. They planned to travel around the world in 80 days at the age of 80. The global adventure has taken them nearly everywhere. "We've been to all seven continents (洲), most of the world's wonders and to almost 50 countries," Hamby said. "The most interesting or unforgettable parts aren't about the places, but about the people we met along the journey. And of course, our journeys have not been without moments of excitement, including a trip on the Trans Siberian Railway in 2011." Hamby and Hazelip said they had no idea their travels would turn them into social-media sensations, but they now get recognized in airports after a video on the Internet has received over 6 million views. Now they have realized the joy and inspiration they have provided for others; they are pleased to share their message of friendship and adventure. For those who may feel it is too late to live out their dreams, Hamby and Hazelip offered a powerful final message: "Get up out of your easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make a plan and live." They even penned a new book, Here We Go-Lessons for Living Fearlessly From Two Traveling Nanas, serving as a road map to live fully, no matter what your age. 24. Rooted in Buddhist (佛教的) stories, it mixes Indian Gandhara art with traditional Chinese painting and sculpture (雕刻) skills. China has four famous grottoes. - Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan: Regarded as the top of Chinese Buddhist art, it houses tens of thousands of Buddha statues. B In the warm waters of the coral reef (珊瑚礁), Rainbow Fish swam gracefully, her scales (鳞片) shining with every color of the rainbow. Wherever she went, her light brought calm to the ocean. One day, as she swam past some seaweed (海藻), she noticed a sea animal hiding—Finn, a shark with a nerveless fin (鳍). “Hello? Who’s there?” Rainbow Fish asked gently. Finn looked up, his eyes filled with sadness. “I’m Finn,” he whispered. “I got hurt in a storm, and now I can’t swim well. Everyone is afraid of me.” Rainbow Fish swam closer, her scales bringing a warm glow. “Don’t worry,” she said softly. “You’re just hurt. And sometimes, when others don’t understand, they feel afraid. But that doesn’t mean we can’t help.” Her kindness lit a spark of hope in Finn’s heart. She called her friends—Shelly, the sea turtle, Bubbles, the shrimp and a pair of playful dolphins. Together, they made Finn a soft seaweed bed, cleaned his fin, and sang cheerful songs. “No one has ever helped me like this before,” Finn said gratefully. Then, Rainbow Fish did something unexpected. She pulled out one of her scales and placed it beside Finn. “This is for courage,” she said. “You’re brave for asking for help, and that makes you shine too.” As time passed, Finn grew stronger, and the other sea animals saw his gentle heart. They changed their attitude to Finn gradually. They played games, laughed together, and soon, Finn was no longer the “broken shark”—he was a friend. From that day on, Rainbow Fish’s kindness became a story told by every wave. And Finn? He learned that even the smallest act of care could heal the biggest wounds. 24. Why was Finn hiding when Rainbow Fish first saw him? A. He was playing a game of hide-and-seek. B. He was afraid of Rainbow Fish’s bright light. C. He planned to attack the nearby sea animals. D. He didn’t want others to see his sadness and injury. 25. How did Rainbow Fish help Finn? A. By giving him food and house. B. By teaching him how to swim faster. C. By asking friends to help and giving him a gift. D. By telling other animals to stay together with him. 26. Which word best describes Rainbow Fish? A. Warm-hearted. B. Careless. C. Proud. D. Lonely. 27. What changed the other sea animals' attitude toward Finn? A. Seeing Finn's sharp teeth. B. Seeing Finn's gentle heart. C. Seeing Finn's ability to swim fast. D. Seeing Finn's gift from Rainbow Fish. 4. 河北省邢台市卓越联盟2025-2026学年高一上学期1月月考英语试题 A Are you a high school student looking for a meaningful way to spend your summer? To be honest, when I first signed up, I thought it would just be a simple, fun day out. I imagined us digging a small hole, dropping a seedling in, and we’d be done. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The reality was much tougher. The sun was beating down, and the soil was hard and rocky. My hands were sore from digging, and sweat poured down my face. For a moment, I felt like giving up. The task seemed daunting. But then I looked around. Everyone was working just as hard. My classmates were encouraging each other, sharing water, and working in teams to break through the tough ground. Our teacher, Mr. Li, whose shirt was wet with sweat, was right there with us, showing us the proper way to plant the seedlings to ensure they would survive. We worked for hours, and by the end of the day, we had planted over two hundred saplings(树苗). Looking at the rows of tiny trees standing proudly on the once-empty hillside, I felt a sense of accomplishment I had never experienced before. It was a feeling far greater than winning a video game or getting a high score in a test. That day, I learned that making a real difference requires effort and teamwork. It’s not about one grand action, but about many small, consistent efforts. We were more than just planting a tree; we planted hope for a greener future. And more importantly, the experience planted a seed of responsibility in my own heart. I understood that we are all caretakers of our planet, and every small act counts. 24. What did the author think of the tree-planting event at first? A. He felt it was a waste of time. B. He was excited about the task. C. He thought the task would be easy. D. What did the author gain from the tree-planting experience? A. Skills in teamwork and leadership. B. An appreciation for the beauty of nature. C. The chance to win an award from the school. D. A sense of responsibility and accomplishment. 27. What message does the author mainly want to convey? A. Teamwork can make any difficult task easier. B. Planting trees is important for the environment. C. Challenges can be overcome through effort and teamwork. D. Outdoor activities are more valuable than classroom learning. 5. 河南省2025-2026年度高一年级上学期第三次月考试卷(26-179A)英语 A The Chemistry Competition: Innovative (创新的) Chemical Experiment Design Time July 18, 2026 1:30 pm - July 18, 2026 5:00 pm About the competition Chemistry is the basis of modern science, mixing theory and formulas (公式) with practical operations. B In the Kumaon Hills, I saw the real size of a black eagle (鹰) when it landed on an oak tree. The branches bent under its weight. Its wings were about three feet wide. The bird looked less graceful on the tree than when it was flying over the green valley. Sitting on a high spot in the mountains, I drank a cup of chai and saw the dark tips of its wings. Most people think of the Himalayas as very high mountains with hard climbs. But my trip to Uttarakhand showed me a softer side. Travelers came to this little-known corner near Nepal not to climb mountains but to see birds. The next morning, I met a guide named Deepak Joshi. He told me how climate change has changed the birds. "Usually the birds come back in April," Deepak said. "But this year they started coming back in February. It's a big difference." Deepak took photos of birds in Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary for his work. Although the area is only 20 square miles, it is famous for its large population of 200 bird species, including several types of eagles, woodpeckers and the giant Himalayan vulture. Because the south of India is getting hotter and more birds are moving north, these hills now have even more kinds of birds. Later, I walked the paths that connect Khali Estate with village guesthouses. Another guide, Hem Joshi, joined me. He was very good at finding birds. He showed me a parakeet in a pine tree and pointed out a serpent eagle flying above us. We passed the village of Dalar. "I hope tourism will help families stay in the mountains instead of moving to the cities for work," Hem said. From his house, I saw the snow-covered Himalayas. The view was so beautiful that I felt lucky to see both nature and the life of this special land. 24. Why did the travelers come to Uttarakhand? A. To enjoy local foods. B. To climb mountains. C. To watch birds. D. To explore Nepal's culture. 25. What can we know about the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary? A. It is home to many kinds of birds. B. It is crowded in summer. C. It covers over 20 square miles. D. It offers the locals well-paid jobs. 26. What can be inferred about Hem in the last paragraph? A. He had to part with his family. B. He was tired of seeing the views. C. He planned to move to a big city. D. He preferred living in the mountains. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. A warm-hearted visitor. B. An unforgettable experience. C. An admirable tour guide. D. A snow-covered mountain. 6. 河南省百师联盟2028届高一上学期12月联考英语(A) A Eco-Friendly Destinations Around the World Countries across the globe are stepping up their efforts to protect the natural environment and that means responsible tourism—for the good of our wildlife and our planet. B When Brecciaroli first moved to Finland from Italy, he knew little about the Sami languages. “I had never even been to Inari when I started studying Inari Sami. I’d never met a Sami person in my life.” Little did he know that 20 years later, he would become one of the leading persons in the Inari Sami revitalization movement. He first planned to spend a semester in Tampere, Finland, then return home to finish his engineering studies. But just as that semester was coming to an end, he met his wife and thus stayed in Finland. He became fluent in Finnish and moved into working as a translator. Ten years later, he discovered a five-year online course in Inari Sami offered by the University of Oulu. “I became the first Italian to learn Inari Sami and one of the few foreigners to get a master’s degree in the language,” says Brecciaroli. By 2019, Brecciaroli was working with a scholar named Marja-Liisa Olthuis, taking over publishing activities for Anaraskiela servi, the Inari Sami Association, which focused on books, newspapers, and digital tools. He is now the editor of Anaras Aavis, the only daily newspaper in Inari Sami, started in 2023. Additionally, they translate a variety of books for both children and adults. Technology is also playing a growing role. “We are now developing a digital spell-checker and a grammar checker,” says Olthuis. “It’s a slow process, but it works.” Brecciaroli also leads efforts to increase Wikipedia content in Inari Sami, which started in 2020. “We now have 6,050 articles published in Inari Sami,” he says. Some help is coming from the outside as well. The University of Tartu in Estonia created the first digital translation software to translate 23 languages, including Inari Sami. “A lot of culture depends on language. It’s an important piece of identity. But we don’t worry about losing Inari Sami anymore,” says Olthuis. “We now have voices on the radio and in the media. We won’t lose this language. My friends and I work for it.” 24. What did Brecciaroli plan to do when he first came to Finland? A. Stay for a short time.  B. Study engineering in Oulu.  C. Learn a Sami language quickly.  D. It was the place where I began to understand China—not just as a country but as a culture, a way of life, and a place that would profoundly shape my future. The early days were challenging. As a Pakistani in a foreign country, everything was new—the language, the food and the social norms (规范). My Putonghua was limited to a few basic phrases, and I often nodded or pointed to communicate. Yet, with every struggle came a moment of success. I clearly remember the first time I successfully ordered food at a noodle shop and the joy of making my first Chinese friend. After completing my master's degree, I joined Wuhan University for my PhD. During my PhD journey, one of the most memorable parts of my life was riding a bike with my friend around Shandong's seaside villages. We set off with bikes and a spirit of adventure. The first few days were challenging—steep hills, changing weather, and being tired from riding a bike for a long time. However, as the days passed, the challenges changed into moments of pure magic. We rode bikes passing through ancient villages and stopped at markets where the smell of fresh baozi and seafood filled the air. The warmth of the locals left a lasting impression on us. "Brothers, you're amazing!" they would say, offering us water and snacks to keep us going on our journey. Now, I work at Dalian Maritime University. Dalian reminds me of Qingdao, where my journey began, and has provided me with the opportunity to reflect on the journey I've had—from the challenges of adapting to a new culture to the joys of exploring its depths. It's here that I continue to build my career, believing that my dreams can reach higher with every passing year. 24. In which city did the author start his life journey in China? A. Shanghai. B. Wuhan. C. Qingdao. D. Dalian. 25. How did the author deal with the challenges on early days in China? A. By using body languages. B. By turning to his teachers. C. By asking his friends for help. D. By making phone calls to his family. 26. What can we know about the author and his friend during the bike trip? A. They lost their way. B. They were supported by the locals. C. They had their bikes repaired. D. They felt anxious as the days passed. 27. What is the author's attitude towards his future life in China? A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Hopeful. 8. 河南南阳地区2025-2026学年高一上学期12月阶段考试卷(26-176A)英语 A Mumbai & London - New Perspectives (视角) on the Ancient World To deepen the understanding of the ancient world through cooperative cross-cultural shows and educational programmes, three sculptures (雕像), the British Museum sculptures of the Indian Vishnu, the ancient Egyptian Sekhmet and the Roman Bacchus, from cultures seldom seen together have been brought together from ancient Egypt, the Mediterranean and India as part of a groundbreaking project. The next step of the project, opening in Mumbai in December 2025, will look more widely at ancient India's relationship with the world around it. New Ideas from Sharing Placed in dialogue with one another, the British Museum sculptures put forward interesting questions around how world's co-operation can unlock new ideas. Does seeing these sculptures together change the way we understand them? What do they have in common and what makes them different? Seeing their descriptions together opens up a space for looking at and thinking differently about ancient cultures. Was it a strange idea to have our own welcome party? New York was very different from my hometown in South Africa. In Cape Town, our whole neighborhood felt like one big family. People often met outside in the evenings. Kids played together, and adults shared food and talked. My godparents always said, "The simplest way to spread goodwill is to start with your own neighborhood. "I believed in building a community with longer tables, not higher fences. I moved to the USA after law school. My wife Sarah and I dreamed of having our own house and a warm community. We rented different places but never found that feeling. People kept to themselves. Once, we heard our neighbors arguing, but I didn't know how to help. Finally, in 2020, we bought a house on a street called Whitney Drive. It had trees and a friendly-looking yard. I felt this was the right place. Remembering my childhood, I knew someone had to take the first step to bring people together. So, right after moving in, I suggested a neighborhood party. Sarah and our two daughters agreed. A month later, we sent invitations to all 12 houses. Now, sitting and waiting, I checked my watch. It was past 6 p. m. What if no one came? I sat there, hoping I could be the good neighbor I wanted to be. Just then, a couple with a baby carriage walked toward us. Then more people came - a young family, an older couple. Soon, twenty neighbors were there, talking and laughing. Our daughters played with other kids. Everyone enjoyed the party. One neighbor said, "This is a great idea. We never had a neighborhood party before." That night, I learned that community isn't about the place, but about the people. It's about being brave enough to love your neighbor. Now, our street has regular get-togethers, and it finally feels like home. 24. What was the author's neighborhood in Cape Town like? A. Quiet. B. Rich. C. Friendly. D. Busy. 25. B As a child I read books with great interest until I went to sleep. When my GCSEs came around, I revised for hours without pause (暂停). But in recent years, I’ve found that I prefer scrolling (滑动) on my phone to reading for pleasure. So, about a year ago, I made a promise: every time I came across a word I didn’t know — in a novel, an article or a conversation — I would look it up and write it down. I wouldn’t use any pen or notebook, just to keep a running list on my phone. Each week, I’d spend a few minutes reading the list back to try to keep the words in mind. The list now expands almost 20 pages. Each time I look up and record a word, I feel a slight change, as though some neglected (忽视的) part of my brain is working again. There is also an important element to it — it functions as something of a diary, a record of what I’ve been reading and thinking about, and who I’ve been listening to. It’s not an easy habit to keep up. If I’m reading on the underground, I have to stop mid-paragraph, pull out my phone and type the new word I come across into my digital doc. And then there’s the revising which I often forget to do, dutifully scrolling through my growing words list, as if I were preparing for a vocabulary test. Still, it’s made my mind much sharper. I find myself reaching less often for the same tiring handful of adjectives, and more often for something clear and exact. Few things are more satisfying than finding the exact word you were searching for. This small habit renewed my love of reading. In an era when our devices attract our attention, it is important to use my brain as a tool for slow thinking. And it has given me back something I feared I’d lost — the pleasure of exercising a mind that, after years of scrolling on my phone, is finally waking up again. 24.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 1? A.She has a strong desire to read an e-book. B.She was into reading at a very young age. C.She argues against scrolling on her phone. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history. The Michigan native recently became the oldest woman ever to hike the entire Appalachian Trail — a 2,200-mile-long road that covers 14 states, with climbs and drops almost the same as climbing Mount Everest 16 times. “You see wonderful parts of our country, things that you wouldn’t see in any other way,” said Betty. “There ’ s so much wildlife. It’s just beautiful.” Betty grew up on a farm in Howell, where her love for the famous footpath began. For years, she dreamed about hiking the track from Georgia to Maine, but life never allowed for the six months it required. She finally realized that nothing would hold her back — so in 2024, she took her first steps on what would become the adventure of a lifetime. The journey wasn’t easy. Along the way, Betty faced thirst, an injury from a fall, and even a disease caused by an insect. Her journey was also influenced by Hurricane Helene, a serious storm which tore through the eastern United States and forced her to rest for some time at the southern Virginia. Making up her mind to finish, she changed her way north and continued in the spring of 2025, braving New England’s mountainous part until the very end. As the neared completion, word began spreading on the track that she was on road to break a record. The former oldest woman to finish, Linda Vanderloop, had completed her hike in 2024 at age 74. But for Betty, this was never about titles. She described Maine and New Hampshire as the hardest parts — but also the most rewarding. Now, after months of hiking through rain, heat and hardship, Betty says she’s in the best shape of her life. Thinking back about her journey, she offered a bit of wisdom for anyone going after a dream: Life is a series of little journeys. And the bigger your efforts, the greater the reward. 4. Why did the author mention Mount Everest? A. To stress the length of the hike. B. To describe the beauty on the way. C. To present Betty’s future plan. D. To show the difficulty of climbing Mount Everest. 5. Why did Betty fail to realize her dream earlier? A. She couldn’t cover the cost. B. She couldn’t spare enough time. C. Her family did not support her. D. Her body was not that strong. 6. Which of the following changed Betty’s hiking path? A. A terrible weather condition. B. A human mistake. C. A serious health problem. D. A wild animal. 7. What does Betty’s story show? A. Love me, love my dog. B. One is never too old to learn. C. Think twice before you act. D. The old couple had taken her in as a paying guest while she studied engineering in her first year at college in a new city. It was the first time she had ever been away from her family, but the Acharyas' warmth and kindness made her feel at home. Mr. Acharya was especially helpful with her studies. He often checked her notes and gave her advice patiently. His friendly personality and guidance made her school life easier and more enjoyable. But today was different. It was her birthday, and being far from family made her feel upset. She sat quietly in the living room. Mrs. Acharya patted her head gently and served dinner. The food was delicious, but Sadhana still felt low. She tried to join the conversation and enjoy the meal, but her mind kept going back to her family. She thought about how, every year on her birthday, her mother cooked her favorite food, and her father took her for a nice long drive and bought her her favorite mango ice cream. After dinner, Mrs. Acharya said, "I have a surprise for you - come with me." Curious, Sadhana followed her into the kitchen. On the counter, there was a beautiful mango cake. In the middle, bright letters read, "Happy Birthday, Sadhana." Sadhana's eyes widened in surprise. "You made this for me?" Mrs. Acharya nodded, "Yes, dear." Tears filled Sadhana's eyes as she hugged Mrs. Acharya tightly. "Thank you so much. This means a lot to me." Mr. Acharya came in with a bottle of fresh mango juice. Rising temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in warmer areas. Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO2 in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures. Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways: Farmers can change WHAT they plant. This could be an entirely different type of crop: corn instead of wheat. Or a different variety of a specific crop. FOUR KEY WAYS Farmers can change WHERE crops are planted. If temperatures rise in fall, crop production can shift north or southwards towards more suitable temperatures. Farmers can change HOW crops are managed. Giving crops the right amount of water, nutrition, and protection from insects and disease can help reduce some impacts of climate change. Farmers can change WHEN they plant. Farmers can plant earlier or later in the year, depending on when spring arrives. Adjusting planting dates requires no additional cost or work. A recent study by experts modeled three adaptation methods — changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing both of them. The chart below shows their impact on the output of corn, rice, sorghum, soybean (大豆) and wheat. These three adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in some countries. But, of course, we don’t only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure cannot adapt to climate change this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future. 21. What should farmers change if they are short of money and labour? A. WHAT. B. WHERE. C. HOW. D. WHEN. 22. Which crop may benefit most if farmers plant improved varieties? A. Rice. B. Corn. C. Sorghum. D. Wheat. 23. What should be done in the future? A. To adopt the three methods. B. To help the farmers in need. C. To focus on crop production. D. To move to colder regions. B My initial exploration of the world of comic books happened through the comic strips (连环漫画) in newspapers. It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak and Archie. While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I regarded diving into all-text novels as a formidable undertaking. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana — a graphic(绘画的) novel. It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex narratives through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. Growing older, I found myself graduating to graphic novels from childish comic books. They deal with serious topics in a more engaging manner and literally show me what was going on. Fast-forward a few years to when I was given a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. While I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his novel, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Charles Dixon’s The Hobbit first. Thanks to Charles Dixon, I had a picture of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand J.R.R. Tolkien’s version. From black and white strips to illustrated graphic novels, this transformation has come a long way. While my romance with books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for illustrated novels is more substantial and here to stay. 24. What can we learn about the author as a little kid? A. He mined newspapers for knowledge. B. Comics struck him as shallow. C. He cared little for book categories. D. Comics were his main reading joy. 25. What does the underlined word “formidable” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Discouraging. B. Rewarding. C. Entertaining. D. Troublesome. 26. What can be inferred about Charles Dixon’s The Hobbit? A. It contains rich visual material. B. It presents a complicated plot. C. It focuses on the latest news. D. It shapes Tolkien’s writing style. 27. What could be the best title for the text? A. Welcome to the World of Literature B. Can’t Get Enough of Graphic Novels C. Let Comic Books Shape Who I Am D. Find Myself through Reading Novels 13. 湖北孝感市汉川市金益高级中学2025-2026学年高一上学期12月月考英语 A Washington, DC is a theatre town. B I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window. On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the cup, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope? If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I'd want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty. Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. This is the tendency of all living things. Monty still lives in a cup, but I'm going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my ability to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger. I'm surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave. 24. Why did the author soak the stub in water? A. To decorate the nice cup. B. To hope that it would grow. C. To make a video in person. D. To remove kitchen rubbish. 25. What can we infer from paragraph two? A. This lettuce showed no sign of recovery. B. This lettuce was still fighting to survive. C. Tiny root thread climbed out of the cup. D. The cuts can still be seen where there used to be leaves. 26. How would the author feel if put in the lettuce's situation? A. Unsure. B. Fearless. C. Aimless. D. Annoyed. 27. What can we learn from Monty? A. Never being afraid to restart yourself. B. Believing in yourself when in trouble. C. Enjoying your own life to the fullest. D. Giving freedom to the heart in a way. 14. 湖北省云学联盟2025-2026学年高一上学期12月学科素养测评英语 A As the holidays are drawing near, these exciting films and attractive documentaries are perfect choices to enrich your leisure time. At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town. • Floralis Genérica Floralis Genérica is a massive statue of a flower. I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been compromised by a brain that simply could not sit still. So, this year I devoted myself to restoring(使复原,使复位) books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain. My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A 400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here’s how I did it. Firstly, I decided to treat my mind like a misbehaving child who needs some rules laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction (分心) each day. It was something I hadn’t done in years and it was scary how difficult it was. In his book, The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices, the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what I found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the desire to reach for that screen. I took inspiration from Niki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how locking away her family’s devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection. For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at times when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the bus, at the park, in bed at night and during lunch breaks. By reawakening my love with books I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration, knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves. 24. What was the first thing the author did to achieve the goal? A. B I sat in my chair in the yard, and our new house was behind me. A table with food and drinks stood nearby. I felt a little worried. Was it a strange idea to have our own welcome party? New York was very different from my hometown in South Africa. In Cape Town, our whole neighborhood felt like one big family. People often met outside in the evenings. Kids played together, and adults shared food and talked. My godparents always said, "The simplest way to spread goodwill is to start with your own neighborhood." I believed in building a community with longer tables, not higher fences. Then more people came—a young family, an older couple. A. Rich. B. Quiet. C. Friendly. D. Busy. 25. What difficulty did the author face in the USA before 2020? A. His family didn't like America. B. He couldn't find a satisfactory community. C. He couldn't afford a beautiful house. D. His neighbors were always arguing. 26. Which word can best describe the neighborhood party? A. Boring. B. Crowded. C. Enjoyable. D. Formal. 27. What may be the best title for the text? A. A Difficult Life in America B. Building a Community with a Party C. Buying Our Dream House in the USA D. B As a child, Dan Fischer loved going to the beach and riding bikes along the coastline with his father, Karl Fischer. So when his father died of pancreatic cancer, he turned to the healing power of the ocean. At the start of this year, Fischer wrote his father's name on his surfboard and "took him out into the ocean" in Newport, Rhode Island. His father's name shone in the sun on what felt like a shared adventure. Inspired, Fischer made a video and posted it on social media the same day. "If you love the ocean, or you know someone who loves the ocean, or maybe you lost someone who just loved being outdoors..., you can comment on this video with their name and a bit of their story. And I'll put their name on my board here, just like I've done with my father's name," he said in the video. "And I'll take them out into the ocean for you." Names poured in from thousands of strangers grieving(悲伤)for the loss of loved ones. Accordingly, the One Last Wave Project was born. The aim of the project was to exchange stories with a community of people going through the same pain. They were essentially healing together. About two months later, Fischer had received over 5,000 names and written most of them on two surfboards. The first two surfboards ran out of space - he's working on getting more. He wrote the names in neat letters on the surfboard and put a clear acrylic(丙烯酸的)coat over them so they didn't wash off. Though a lot of people have been struggling with grief, Fischer was amazed by the responses that have poured in. "If I am able to help one person or one person shares their name, that is enough for me," he said. "But I am blown away - by not just the number of people sharing, but the depth of stories and love that they are sharing." And he plans to take his project around the world and connect with even more people - through sharing grief and the power of the ocean. 5. Why did Dan Fischer first write his father's name on his surfboard? A. To memorize his father with the ocean's healing power. B. To start a new surf project. C. To show his love for surfing to strangers. D. To ask others to share their stories. 6. How did Dan Fischer feel about people's responses to his project? A. Amazed and deeply touched. B. Tired but proud. C. Confused and worried. D. Disappointed but hopeful. 7. What does Fischer intend to do next? A. He will share his project with the world. B. He will connect to more social media. C. He will extend the project worldwide. D. He will sail around the world with strangers. 8. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The healing Power of Surfing. B. It sits quietly on a rock by Langelinie Pier — and the best part? It’s free to visit To avoid crowds around this popular spot, arrive early, between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. The ideal time to go is from April to September, when the weather is mild and snow won’t ruin your trip. Geirangerfjord (More og Romsdal, Norway) As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s famous for its deep blue waters and amazing waterfalls like the Seven Sisters. But adults need to pay an entry fee of 180 SEK: kids under 7 get in for free. Visit from May to October, when the museum’s outdoor exhibits are fully open. Santa Claus Village (Rovaniemi, Finland) Located right on the Arctic Circle, this village is known as Santa Claus “official home.” Here, you can take photos with Santa (about 25 EUR per person, and reservations are recommended), send postcards with special Arctic Circle stamps, and even step across the clearly marked Arctic Circle line for a fun souvenir. B I’ve always loved cats. But until nine years ago, my pet cats had a high number of deaths. I decided that my next cat was going to live indoors only. But then came Oliver. He was left at a vet’s office. My sister worked there, and the workers were having trouble finding him a home. The workers found him ordinary. They only kept him because he was a willing blood donor (捐献者). It broke my sister’s heart to see the little cat offer his arm for the needle (针). So, she called me to come and see him. When I met Oliver, I fell in love immediately. He had soft black fur (毛皮) with a white undercoat, a round face, and golden eyes. I named him Oliver and brought him home. But Oliver wasn’t an indoors-only cat. He cried at the door and tried to get out. After much discussion, my family and I built a 30-by-15-foot outdoor cat run with walls, grass and toys. Oliver loved it - lying in the grass, enjoying the sun, and watching birds. But that was not the end of it! The cat run overlooked an empty lot, inspiring the idea for a wildlife garden. So, I read books and magazines, visited child-care centres and went on garden tours to educate myself. I was not sure if I had the skills or knowledge to do it right, but I reasoned, no one would ever see the garden but us. With my dad, a retired worker, and the rest of my family, we cleared the land, planted thousands of trees, bushes, and flowers, and added roads, a pool, and garden decorations - much of it cat-themed. Everything was perfect! Our “Meyer Cat Garden” soon attracted birds, squirrels, frogs, and even deer. A friend suggested it for Spokane’s garden tour, and 5,000 visitors came. People loved its emotion and creativity. Media coverage followed, and since then, over 10,000 people have toured the garden, from nursing home members to national garden groups. The project changed my life. Working together brought my family closer. What matters most, I became an experienced gardener, head of our garden club, and confident in public speaking. Oliver, our inspiration, watches the garden from his cat run, satisfied and safe. We joke that with the cost of plants, decorations, and countless hours of labor, we’ve spent over $100,000 - earning Oliver the title of our “$100,000 homeless cat.” 4.The writer brought Oliver home because she ______. But this is something that didn’t happen overnight. Anti-bullying programs were introduced in Danish schools over 15 years ago, according to Euronews, but it’s something that has to be constantly updated to meet the changing times. Programs begin in primary grades where children are taught empathy (共情) and how to avoid bullying. At the Sluseholmen Skole school in Copenhagen, meditation and hugs are part of the morning routine. According to Maja Hindsgaul, a teacher at the school, this is the key to well-being. “I’m the one they can talk to if something is difficult. And I’m actually talking a lot about who I am and what I like and it’s OK if they like to hug. I like that, too,” she told Euronews. “Of course, they have to learn to read and write and things like that, but they can do that if they feel safe. It’s my task to make them feel safe so that they can develop social skills at school.” Learning how to live with one another is a large part of the anti-bullying programs and this appears to be working well in the younger grades. “We’re always trying to get the kids to work together in different types of groups, across genders and not always with their best friends,” said teacher Louise Ibsen. “They’re also practicing social skills for how to communicate.” A new program was rolled out in the 2021/22 school year according to a Mary Foundation news release. Our School Strength is a joint effort from the Mary Foundation, Borns Vilkar, a Danish child organization, and Save the Children Denmark. The program is the result of four years of research and cooperation by the nonprofit groups. It’s designed to deal with bullying up to grade 10 and focuses on students’ well-being and to help the youth feel that they are accepted and play an active role in the community. Anti-bullying programs that teach children empathy for others at a young age can make a big difference when these students become teenagers. 24.Which word can best describe the anti-bullying programs? A.Unsuccessful. B.Effective. C.Outdated. D.Smooth. 25.How does Maja Hindsgaul help her students feel safe? A.By giving them constant hugs. B.By practicing meditation. C.By showing sympathy for them. D.By offering support. 26.What should be a focus of the anti-bullying programs in Ibsen’s opinion? A.Developing students’ social skills. B.Keeping students working out. C.Providing a different atmosphere. D.Improving students’ learning state. 27.What might be the best title for the text? I wanted to tell my French friend, Claire, “I am a little tired.” I carefully said the words I’d learned: “Je suis un pue fatigue.” But Claire burst out laughing. My face felt hot. What had I done wrong? Claire explained, “In French, there are words that sound similar but have very different meanings. ‘peu’ means ‘a little,’ but if you pronounce it differently, it can sound like ‘pue’, which means ‘stinks’ — like something smells bad. So, instead of saying you needed a rest, it sounded like you were saying you smelled bad and were tired” This awkward moment was a real eye-opener for me. It made me realize just how daunting pronunciation can be in a foreign language. Even small differences in pronunciation can completely change the meaning of what you’re trying to say. The same is true in English, for example, “ship” (a large boat) and “sheep” (a woolly animal) sound very similar, but they mean totally different things. Now, I pay extra attention to how words sound and what they mean. And if I mix them up again? I’ll just laugh along. After all, laughing is part of learning — even if it’s a bit stinky sometimes.
