第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Four online platforms for reselling used clothes
Poshmark
Poshmark is a favorite platform for selling used clothes. Sellers take their own photos and list their items. They can also deal with the buyer directly. Another advantage of Poshmark is that it offers free shipping to sellers. It takes a 20% commission (佣金) on each sale over $15. If the sale is under $15, it takes a fixed commission of $ 2.95.
eBay
eBay is by far the biggest platform to sell used clothing and other items. It will get your items in front of millions of buyers and allow you to sell worldwide. eBay charges a 13% commission on everything you sell. You get 50 free listings a month. If you want to list more than that, you will need to open an eBay Store.
ThredUp
ThredUp works a little differently. Sellers needn’t take pictures, make lists, and ship items by themselves because ThredUp does the work for them! All sellers have to do is box up their things and send them in. All clothing must be in good condition. Shipping is free for both sellers and buyers. But buyers can’t negotiate (协商) with sellers for prices. Besides, it takes a 50% commission on each sale.
Mercari
Mercari has tools like “Smart Pricing”, which automatically (自动地) adjusts an item’s price to the average or the slightly above-average market price. It also allows buyers to search for an item via just a photo in addition to the text search. Usually, it shows both available and sold items. The platform earns a fixed 10% commission, plus 2.9%+$0.30 payment processing fees.
1. What is the similarity between Poshmark and ThredUp?
A. Both require used clothes of high quality.
B. Both offer free delivery services to sellers.
C. Both permit direct negotiations on discounts.
D. Both ask sellers to present the product details.
2. Which platform offers the highest profit to users selling a T-shirt priced at $10?
A. Poshmark. B. eBay. C. ThredUp. D. Mercari.
3. What can we know about Mercari?
A. It aids in the process of pricing items.
B. It organizes sales promotions frequently.
C. It removes sold items from the search list.
D. It offers a wide variety of search methods.
B
What if you could explore a world created by your favorite artist? What if you could walk through a city street painted by Van Gogh, a landscape by Leonardo da Vinci, or the fantastical vision of Salvador Dali? Soon, you will be able to do these.
Glen Keane was a Disney animator (动画师). He drew some of the world’s most beloved characters. As he drew, his characters became more and more real to him, and yet, they were still limited to a 2D world. Right now, working with some of the latest technology, he is able to move his art into the magical world of virtual reality (VR).
As the artist behind some of Disney’s most beloved characters, he has works that are familiar to us. For him, animation is more than just drawing. It is a process of bringing characters to life in a 2D world. This has always disappointed Glen. How can a flat page truly express a character? “Well, what if I could draw them with the freedom of a sculptor (雕刻家)?” he thought. He wants to explore his artistic limits and create new worlds.
Here is where he finds his way to the magic of VR. Using a tool called Tilt Brush, now Glen can draw beloved life-size characters and open up an entirely new world for his art. Think about what’s possible with this new world of art in VR. What an amazing experience it would be to see beloved life-size characters for yourself! Better yet, people all over the world can enjoy this kind of art, no matter their age or background. People who might not otherwise be able to go to the world’s big art museums can experience famous works as well.
We are only at the beginning of developing art in the digital era. So how will VR and our digital capabilities change in the coming years? More and more, it seems that we are moving away from art and technology being put in opposing camps. And as they find ways to connect, we are starting to experience boundary-pushing horizons.
4. Why does the author ask two questions in the first paragraph?
A. To express his doubts about VR.
B. To discuss imagination with readers.
C. To draw readers’ attention to the topic.
D. To introduce works created by famous artists.
5. Why did Glen Keane begin to create art in VR?
A. He wanted to make his works more popular.
B. He was tired of creating hand-drawn works.
C. He hoped to experience the latest technology.
D. He desired to add life to his works creatively.
6. Which of the following can best describe the new art form?
A. Advanced but costly.
B. Accessible and eye-opening.
C. Educational but unwelcome.
D. Romantic and environment-friendly.
7. Which can serve as the best title for the text?
A. Virtual reality is closely related to art
B. An animator contributes much to VR technology
C. An artist brings characters to life in virtual reality
D. VR technology creates challenges for modern artists
C
A group of scientists have uncovered a simple log structure (原木结构) from the Stone Age that may be the oldest evidence yet of early humans building with wood. It’s nearly half a million years old.
The leader Larry Barham and his team dug up the log structure — plus a handful of wooden tools — from a riverbed site that sits above a waterfall. They think the crossed logs could have been the base for a bigger structure like a walkway or a platform. It suggests that humans were more advanced than previously thought and they were able to adjust to their environment and build structures to meet their needs even in the harsh Stone Age world.
Usually, wood is rarely found at such ancient sites as it usually rots (腐烂) and disappears when it comes into contact with elements. But these materials stayed underwater, which helped protect them. So when the team uncovered the logs in 2019, they were still able to see telltale signs that early humans had shaped them. “Everything just looks so pristine, causing you to think, ‘It cannot be this old,’” Barham said.
Figuring out more details was challenging, since traditional dating techniques couldn’t get deep enough into the past. During the process, the scientists used a new method called “luminescence dating”, which uses tiny minerals (矿物质) in the sand to measure how long materials have been buried. The new dating method has far-reaching effects, allowing scientists to date much further back in time.
The log structure was made at least 476,000 years ago, while the wooden tools are slightly younger, under 400,000 years old. That places the materials in a time before our species, Homo sapiens, developed. They would have been made by another kind of early human cousin — possibly Homo heidelbergensis. If these ancient humans were putting effort into the furniture of the site, it suggests they may have stayed for a while or made regular visits, according to Dirk Leder, who was not involved with the research. The log structure is an important window into what these humans were capable of.
8. What is the significance of the discovery of this log structure?
A. It reflects the richness and value of natural resources.
B. It shows early humans’ intelligence and adaptability.
C. It explains the natural challenges facing early humans.
D. It suggests the existence of advanced building techniques.
9. What does the underlined word “pristine” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Fresh. B. Suitable. C. Traditional. D. Convenient.
10. Why was the new method applied by the scientists?
A. To research the early use of tiny minerals.
B. To uncover previously unknown historical events.
C. To prove the presence of Homo sapiens at the site.
D. To enable more exact judgment of the materials’ age.
11. Which of the following does Dirk Leder probably agree with?
A. Homo sapiens shared living space with Homo heidelbergensis.
B. Homo sapiens was the first to construct wooden buildings.
C. Early humans’ creation shows signs of their activity.
D. Ancient humans led a competitive lifestyle.

Did you know that the sun has weather? The sun’s weather, called space weather, can affect the entire solar system. The sun is continuously blowing a stream of tiny particles (颗粒) in all directions, called the solar wind, which is mostly made up of hydrogen (氢). It blows at hundreds of kilometres per second and has been blowing onto the Earth for billions of years.
But why hasn’t it crashed into us? Actually, the Earth has a magnetic field (磁场), which causes the planet to act like a giant magnet in space and protects the Earth from the solar wind. The Earth’s magnetic field is what causes a compass to work. The magnetic field can’t be seen, but we can measure it with magnets and other scientific instruments.
The particles that make up the solar wind are made to change direction by the Earth’s magnetic field, so they mostly pass around the Earth without crashing into us. But it’s not an immaculate protection -- because of the shape of the Earth’s magnetic field, close to the North and South Poles, a little bit of the solar wind can sometimes get through and crash directly into the atmosphere.
This crash happens between very tiny particles at an incredible speed. Therefore, instead of throwing off smaller pieces or exploding, the particles give off light, causing polar lights. The colors of the light tell us what type of atmospheric particle is being crashed into by the solar wind. For example, red and green are from oxygen.
What the polar lights, also known as auroras, exactly look like depends on the state of the Earth’s magnetic field and the atmosphere, but more directly depends on space weather. Sometimes the sun produces a storm, which typically will cause an impressive view of auroras only for people who live in the far north and south of the world, underneath the part of the Earth’s magnetic field that can let the solar wind through. But sometimes, a really powerful storm can cause the auroras to be visible in some other places as well.
12. What is mentioned about the magnetic field?
A. It can be measured by a compass.
B. It saves the Earth from external hits.
C. It attracts the solar wind to the Earth.
D. It can be seen with scientific instruments.
13. What does the underlined word “immaculate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Perfect. B. Common. C. Impressive. D. Changeable.
14. Which element directly decides different colors of auroras?
A. The speed of the solar wind.
B. The changing space weather around the sun.
C. Varieties of atmospheric particles hit by solar wind.
D. The overall shape of Earth’s global magnetic field.
15. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Powerful storms happen frequently on the sun.
B. Space weather may widen the Earth’s magnetic field.
C. Solar winds’ force plays a role in auroras’ visible range.
D. Auroras’ appearance relies mostly on the Earth’s atmosphere.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
For the last few years, Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world. As a Finnish person, I’ve often been asked: what exactly makes you so satisfied with your lives? Our national self-image is that we’re quiet, introverted (内向的) types. ____16____ However, happiness is best achieved indirectly. Our culture and values play a key role in how we approach life and happiness.
____17____ Open displays of wealth and success are avoided here. For example, in Helsinki, the capital, you will rarely see fancy or expensive cars on the streets. Even financial (金融的) sharks here tend to drive ordinary cars rather than anything that would make them stand out.
Many Finns are shaped by a belief: things are neither the worst nor the best but always capable of improvement. We view hardships as part of life, not something to fear, as we think everyone has the tools to weather the storm. Whatever your situation, there is always something that can be made better. ____18____
In terms of creating happiness, we like to view it as a game. In ice hockey (冰球), one of Finland’s most popular sports, if you are playing center, you have to put in the work to try to score and count on your teammates. ____19____ In addition to recognizing personal responsibility for one’s own life, it is necessary to realize our identity, achievements, and happiness in life are often shaped by the collective influence of those around us.
It’s human nature to compare ourselves to others. ____20____ This is because most Finnish people understand that there are so many things we simply can’t control. So there is no point in desiring what makes others happy now, even if we are struggling. Sometimes life gives, and sometimes it takes. That’s why we prefer the saying: “Some have happiness; everyone has summer.”
A. We believe everyone must find the goal of their own life.
B. This doesn’t seem to match with being the happiest people.
C. However, we Finns tend to be more indifferent to comparisons.
D. Sometimes making comparisons can inspire us to make progress.
E. Similarly, we need both our own effort and community support in life.
F. In Finland, we prefer to keep it low-key when it comes to what we have.
G. Accepting struggles while focusing on what we can improve keeps us active.

Kelly Schilling needed a few last-minute groceries before the weekend and placed an order through an online platform. Like any routine order, delivery driver Lisa Burnett accepted the request, picked up the items, and dropped them off at Schilling’s home.
But the next day, Burnett noticed something surprising. Her earnings showed an extra $130. Concerned it might be a mistake, she contacted the company but was told the payment was listed as miscellaneous (杂项的). Still worried someone might have been accidentally overcharged, she checked the order details through the platform and found out it was Schilling who had paid. So she decided to do something many people might not have done — she went back to return the money.
When Burnett arrived at Schilling’s home and explained why she came, Schilling checked her bank statement. Her eyes widened. She had indeed tipped $ 130 by accident — a careless click she hadn’t even noticed. “You came all the way back to return this?” Schilling said in surprise. The moment was captured on Schilling’s home security camera. Before Burnett left, Schilling asked for her phone number.
That night, Schilling watched the video again. Burnett’s honest face and worried explanation stayed with her. “She could have very easily taken the tip, and I would never have heard from her,” Schilling thought to herself, “but she didn’t.” Touched by Burnett’s honesty, Schilling wanted to show her gratitude in a meaningful way. A few days later, Schilling invited Burnett back and surprised her with a new jacket and $250 in gift cards. “I can’t take this,” Burnett protested, but Schilling insisted.
As they talked, Burnett finally opened up. Her voice trembled (颤抖) as she spoke: She had lost her daughter five years ago and was now raising her granddaughter alone. “She loves to draw,” Burnett added quietly, “but we can’t afford art supplies right now.” The words hung in the air, heavy with years of grief (悲伤) she had carried silently.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Out of sympathy, Schilling decided to do more.

Out of sympathy, Schilling decided to do more. Deeply moved by Burnett’s hard life and silent sorrow, she made up her mind to help the little granddaughter realize her artistic dream. She planned to prepare various high-quality art supplies, including colored pencils, sketchbooks, paints and drawing boards. Meanwhile, she shared Burnett’s honest story online, hoping to gather more warmth and support for the poor family.
Days later, Burnett found a small package on her doorstep. Opening it, she saw a full set of delicate art supplies and a warm letter inside. In the letter, Schilling encouraged her granddaughter to stick to drawing and promised to always support her. Burnett’s eyes filled with tears. She felt the genuine kindness from a stranger and was grateful for the warmth that lit up her tough life. The two kind-hearted women became close friends ever since.
