The top two classes that organize the most quickly and neatly will be awarded our safety prize. Over 100 students, including myself, have participated in gathering donations and funding from people and businesses in the community to help our school. We’ve all seen this school suffer from a lack of funding during the recent economic crash. But thanks to an admirable group of student body members, we’ll start to turn that problem around. The top 10 students to bring in funding for the school will each receive a prize for their contribution, but this award will be kept a surprise until two p.m.. For now, that’s all from me. “There are more people actively learning a language through DuoLingo than in the entire US public school system.” says Luis von Ahn, founder of the free language learning app. Since its launch (投放市场) in 2012, more than 30 million people have downloaded (下载) the app, which gamified education and attracted many language learners.
The growth of technology for educational use has changed the way in which people learn and receive education. This is particularly true for languages, an area in which the explosion of mobile apps and interactive software has provided choices to a range of people who were previously unable to receive foreign language education.
Von Ahn says that when he founded DuoLingo he decided to find a way for people to learn a language for free. Free use of languages was something he had a personal interest in addressing: he grew up in Guatemala, where he was surrounded by people all trying to learn English, half of whom were failing to do so and a lot of whom could not afford it.
One of the big changes caused by tech is the change in language learners. Languages have long been connected with the rich people, but now people from less rich backgrounds are finding affordable ways to learn.
Von Ahn says an unexpected result of DuoLingo being an app is that it’s attracting an unlikely type of user. DuoLingo was designed (设计) to be like a game, and what the company has found is that many users aren’t even necessarily diehard language fans, they’re just looking for an educational way to kill some time.
“They’re still procrastinating from something else, but at least it’s somewhat useful.” says Von Ahn, “The truth of the matter is that learning a language takes months or years. We have to find a way to keep them interested and that’s where the gamification came in.”
24. What can we say about DuoLingo after its launch?
A. It is used by entire US schools. B. It costs 30 dollars to download.
C. It changes the use of languages. D. It makes education more enjoyable.
25. Why does the author mention Von Ahn in paragraph 3?
A. To show his poverty in childhood.
B. To explain why he founded the app.
C. To prove he was interested in the app.
D. To find out how he designed the app.
26. What change does DuoLingo bring to language learners?
A. They can master a language faster. B. They become language fans totally.
C. They can learn in a low-cost way. D. They can now use it to kill some time.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Reasons for Learning a Language
B. How to Learn a Language Online
C. The Development of a Language App
D. Mastering a Language with DuoLingo

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but everyone is wearing mask. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. “As we get older,” he said, “our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same—even if we put on weight.”
Another company has also been working on this kind of software. Tech5 has AI that measures the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (the colored part of your eyes). Tech5 hopes to ignore all of the face below the nose.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. Touchless verification (验证) has become extremely important due to the COVID-19. More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime (犯罪). “It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s CEO. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports, Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang.
28. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Rule. B. Habit. C. Mistake. D. Problem.
29. What makes the software recognize people wearing masks?
A. The eye area. B. The shape of face.
C. The color of the eyes. D. The facial expression.
30. What is Huang Lei’s attitude towards the software?
A. Anxious. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.
31. What can we know about the new technology from the last paragraph?
A. It needs further improving. B. It will be less popular in the future.
C. It won’t work if people wear glasses. D. It cannot store key facial information.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. B 31. A

【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s CEO. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports, Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,”(“它可以探测到犯罪嫌疑人,”Hanwang首席执行官黄磊说。警方在高度安全的环境中使用Hanwang的技术。这意味着像政府大楼、地铁站和机场这样的地方,黄承认这种新技术的一个很大的弱点:当人们同时戴口罩和太阳镜时,它就会失效。“在这种情况下,所有关键的面部信息都会丢失,但我相信未来我们可以克服这一弱点。”)”推知,黄磊对于这项技术的态度是积极的。故选B项。

For late 19th-century North Americans and Europeans, a display of tableware (餐具) could reveal much about someone’s social position, as the wealthy took great care to get different kinds of forks for everything. Before the 18th century, people of all classes usually ate with a knife and a spoon.
The fork’s path to the table was hard-won and slow. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, forks were used for slicing food into pieces or lifting meat from a pot or fire.
Following a reduction in size, the fork appeared to have entered dining areas in the courts of the Middle East and Byzantine Empire by the eighth and ninth centuries, and became common among wealthy families there by the tenth century. Early in the 11th century, it appeared in various pieces of European art. In the late 11th century, St. Peter Damian from Ostia wrote about a Byzantine princess who used forks and regarded her dying of a disease as punishment for such “luxury”.
The fork’s slow conquest of Europe was carried out from Italy. Motivated by the same concerns for hygiene (卫生), forks were bought by wealthy Britons, inspired by Queen Victoria, who regarded fork use as a sign of good manners.
The fork’s introduction to North America dates back to 1633, when John Winthrop, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was gifted a set of forks. The Industrial Revolution strengthened the fork’s presence on dining room tables as production of flatware became less expensive. Writing in 1896 in Social Etiquette, Maud C. Cooke declared the fork had finally conquered the knife in America and “any attempt to give the knife importance at table is looked upon as an offense (冒犯) against good taste.”
32. What can we learn about forks from paragraph 1?
A. They were used improperly in the 18th century.
B. They had many different types in the 19th century.
C. They were popular in Europe before the 18th century.
D. They led to North American’s rise in social position.
33. What was a function of forks in ancient Egypt?
A. To eat food. B. To decorate tables.
C. To cut food. D. To create works of art.
34. Who was against the use of forks?
A. St. Peter Damian. B. Thomas Coryate.
C. Queen Victoria. D. Maud C. Cooke.
35. What marked the beginning of the fork’s introduction to North America?
A. The appearance of flatware B. The start of the Industrial Revolution.
C. John Winthrop receiving forks as presents. D. Maud C. Cooke writing Social Etiquette.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. A 35. C

Plan a Budget-Friendly (省钱的) Summer Vacation
It’s never too early to start thinking about your summer vacation. Deciding where to go and what attractions to see can actually be a fun and exciting part of the experience—particularly when you find ways to save your travel dollar.
____36____
Rethink your “summer vacation”.
If your summer vacation window is wide open, why not skip July and August? The flights and accommodations are about 25% cheaper in the spring or early fall. If you must travel during the busy season, you can still save by being flexible.____37____Flying out on a Tuesday instead of a Friday could save you a bit of money, and flying in the afternoon will likely be cheaper than a morning flight.
____38____
It’s always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early. If you plan on flying to your destination, for example, it will be much easier to find seats on your preferred flights if you book in March than if you were to wait until the last minute. The same applies to hotels, where prices are based on supply and demand.
Use the right websites.
There are a lot of websites competing for your travel dollar. ____39____ For example, when you make five reservations with Booking.com, you can have access to their “Genius Program” which gives you 10% off as well as early check-in and late check-out.
Consider a tour.
With so many places to see and things to do, planning a trip can wear you out quickly. ____40____ Seasoned tour operators, such as Trafalgar, take the stress out of travel so all you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself. More importantly, a guided vacation represents a significant saving.
A. Plan your flights.
B. Book in advance.
C. In that case, a tour is a fantastic choice.
D. Choose the one that offers the best service.
E. That competition has led to many benefits for travelers.
F. When booking flights, choose the least popular travel times.
G. Here are tips to plan a summer vacation within your budget.
【答案】36. G 37. F 38. B 39. E 40. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了计划一个预算有利的暑假的一些方法。
【36题详解】
根据前文“Deciding where to go and what attractions to see can actually be a fun and exciting part of the experience—particularly when you find ways to save your travel dollar.”(决定去哪里和去看什么景点实际上可以是一个有趣和令人兴奋的经验的一部分——特别是当你找到节省旅行费用的方法。)可知当你找到节省旅行费用的方法时,度假就会变得有趣并令人兴奋,同时根据下文的几个黑体字可知,下文提到了省钱的技巧。因此空处应承接前文,讲述以下就是一些省钱的方法。选项G.“Here are tips to plan a summer vacation within your budget.”(这里有一些在你的预算范围内计划一个暑假的建议。)切题,故选G。
【37题详解】
根据前文“If you must travel during the busy season, you can still save by being flexible.”(如果你必须在繁忙季节旅行,灵活一点还是可以省钱的。)下文“Flying out on a Tuesday instead of a Friday could save you a bit of money, and flying in the afternoon will likely be cheaper than a morning flight.”(在星期二而不是星期五飞行可以为你节省一点钱,而且下午的飞行可能比早上的飞行更便宜。)可知,选择非周末时间出行可以为你节省钱,同样乘坐下午飞机比早上的飞行更便宜。即我们选择乘坐飞机出行要选择人们不愿选择的时间可以省钱。选项F.“When booking flights, choose the least popular travel times.”(在预订机票时,选择最不受欢迎的旅行时间。)是对后文列举事例的总述,符合题意。故选F。
【38题详解】
根据下文“It’s always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early. If you plan on flying to your destination, for example, it will be much easier to find seats on your preferred flights if you book in March than if you were to wait until the last minute.”(提前预定你的暑假总是对你最有利的。 选项B.“Book in advance.”(提前预定。)符合题意,故选B。
