Dear Peter,
How is everything going? I’m writing to share with you a wonderful experience in our class vegetable garden.

Dear Peter,
How is everything going? I’m writing to share with you a wonderful experience in our class vegetable garden.
Having assigned a small garden, our class held a heated discussion about what to plant. Take different factors into consideration, we decided to plant vegetables, such as tomatoes and cucumbers there. As scheduled, we were divided into groups, taking turns to water and look after them carefully every day. Hard work paid off! Yesterday we had a good harvest.
This experience is fantastic. Not only does it enable me to feel the joy of hard work, but also it helps me be aware of the importance of patience and teamwork.
I’m looking forward to your reply and your interesting stories. (118 words)
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:The special day came, with the family busy decorating the party room.
Paragraph 2:The parents went upstairs to wake up Milena gently.
要点1:父亲、爷爷摆放巨型黄油摆件,悬挂黄油花纹纸链与Milena满脸黄油的趣味照片;
要点1:三十多位亲友前来赴宴,大家参与黄油主题游戏,全场欢声笑声不断;

The special day came, with the family busy decorating the party room. The whole family got up very early to set up the party room quietly without waking Milena. Dad and Grandpa placed the giant butter stick decoration in the center of the party area. They hung beautiful butter-patterned paper chains on the walls, and put up funny photos of Milena eating butter. Mum and Grandma added the final touches to the butter birthday cake and laid out all kinds of homemade butter-flavored treats. Everything is ready, with every detail reflecting Milena’s favorite food. (82 words)
The parents went upstairs to wake up Milena gently. They guided Milena into the room filled with butter-themed decorations and warm love. When seeing everything, Milena jumped with excitement. Around thirty relatives and friends arrived one after another to join the celebration. Milena’s father put on a cow costume to host butter-themed games, filling the room with constant laughter. Milena enjoyed every minute of the party. This warm butter-themed party perfectly proves that it is parents’ acceptance of kids’ true interests that brings children the purest joy. (78 words)
Text 1
W: Don’t stay home all day. Why not go to the park and do some sports?
M: All right, Mum. I’ll head out soon.
Text 2
M: The botanical garden has various beautiful flowers, yet the paths are packed with tourists.
W: Holidays always bring lots of crowds.
Text 3
W: It’s extremely hot today. I’ve got no appetite for dinner. I only want to buy a cup of drink.
M: You’d better eat a little dinner to keep healthy. How about some cold noodles? They’re light and easy to digest.
Text 4
W: Our science project needs six members per group. Have you got your team ready, Tom?
M: We still need two more members.
W: Count me in then.
M: Sure.
Text 5
W: James, I’m confused about the school’s online course selection. I can’t finish my registration.
M: Take it easy. Let me walk you through the steps. First sign in and pick your required subjects.
W: Oh, thanks a lot.
Text 6
W: Paul, have you decided where we’re heading this weekend? I hope we can enjoy amazing natural sights and camp outdoors overnight.
M: Camping sounds nice, but I’d prefer somewhere quiet with fewer tourists. Crowds always ruin relaxation.
W: How about a forest park? It has great scenery and allows camping, and most areas aren’t crowded.
M: That’s perfect.
W: I’ll prepare camping supplies after dinner.
M: Don’t forget the map. I’ll help pack everything then, but I have a report to complete first.
Text 7
W: Hi, Peter. Did you see the film last night?
M: No, I was tied up with piles of work when I watched you leave the office. Is the film fantastic?
W: Definitely. It’s a story based on real history. A young man travels to Thailand to look into his family’s past and uncovers his grandmother’s secret.
M: Interesting! What’s the secret?
W: I’d better not tell you that. You need to watch it yourself.
M: Got it. Then what’ the best part?
W: While the views are beautiful and the plot is sincere, the actors’ natural acting struck me most. With the letters as a clue, the film shows how older generations valued honesty and loved their hometown.
M: That’s moving. I can’t wait to see it soon.
Text 8
W: Sam, have you heard about the new humanlike robots? They can walk steadily, carry things, and even do housework like cleaning and fetching water.
M: It’s hard to believe. They used to be only in science fiction movies. I’ve learned that these robots are equipped with AI that can operate in real daily situations. Many companies are testing them for home use in the future.
W: That would be really convenient. But I also feel a little worried about whether robots will take the place of humans in the future. If so, many people may lose their jobs.
M: That’s a real problem. But I believe robots can help us instead of controlling us. After all, technology should make our lives easier, not more stressful.
Text 9
W: Dr. Smith, I heard your team has just won an innovation prize for inventing a special chair. Could you tell us more about this product?
M: I was always bothered by aching backs after sitting too long. Seeing many people struggling with the same discomfort like me, my team and I set out to develop this chair.
W: What sets it apart from ordinary chairs and which groups are the main target users?
M: Its backrest adapts to body shapes automatically. Tiny built-in devices ease tension around the waist and shoulders. Most importantly, a smart sensor sends a gentle reminder after 45 minutes of continuous sitting to urge users to stand and stretch. Office employees and busy students are our main customers. We also developed a lighter model specially for long-distance drivers to reduce physical discomfort during driving. We hope it can bring relief to everyone who sits for long hours.
Text 10
Welcome to English in a Minute. Today we’ll learn the American idiom “cost an arm and a leg”. At first sight, many people may wonder whether customers need to pay for goods with their real arms and legs when shopping. Of course that’s not true. Let’s see an example. One man bought a new computer, but its price was much higher than expected. To stress the surprising high cost, he said the device cost him an arm and a leg. As a typical informal oral phrase, it is commonly used among Americans in daily communication. However, it’s improper in business meetings or official papers. Do you get the hang of it? Go ahead and use it in daily talk, because languages are mastered through practical use. Welcome to subscribe to our channel for more useful idioms. And that’s all for today’s English in a Minute.

My husband Richie has long held a sincere affection for pigeons (鸽子). Attracted by two elegant grey rock pigeons, we decided to adopt the lovely pair and named them Bert and Ernie. I tried my best to secure their comfort and safety. One Sunday afternoon, while Richie was cleaning the loft (鸽舍), Ernie took the chance and flew away. We suspected it was a trained homing pigeon that had returned to its original home. I have raised many pets before, yet I realized loving pigeons means being more ready to accept loss.
Later, we took in a pure white King pigeon called Dan. We once thought both Bert and Dan were male. However, their close daily interactions and broken eggs showed Dan was actually female. I told my dad about it, and he immediately sent me information about egg warmers and nesting boxes. I thanked him, but expressed we were just going to wait and see what happened. Several weeks later, a tiny baby pigeon named Murray hatched successfully. We watched attentively as it grew day by day and gradually matured into a lively young pigeon.
One day in early May, I went out to feed the pigeons, and I didn’t see Murray in his usual spot. I began to panic. Had a wild animal gotten in? Was there an opening somewhere and had Murray flown out? I followed Dan’s eyes and looked upward. On the highest perch (栖木) stood Murray! He’d flown up there all by himself! I cried out loud, feeling extremely triumphant.
I can see the pigeon loft through the window next to my desk, and when I’m working from home, I often cast a quick look to the left and see Bert, Dan and Murray flying around, sitting on their perches, bathing in the sun. Richie and I never intentionally do anything to assist with Murray’s birth or help him learn to fly. It all just happened, and we were lucky to witness it.

Severe soil salinization (盐渍化) has destroyed farmland and limited the growth of crops. A plant called Salicornia, also known as sea bean, has emerged as a promising superfood for the future.
Salicornia is a plant that grows perfectly in salt-rich coastal wetlands and desert areas. Though it has been consumed by coastal local groups for thousands of years and served as a convenient, nutritious travel snack for ancient people, it remains little-known in most modern markets.
When Manuel Díaz Cárdenas worked in a nature preserve with widespread Salicornia, a French tourist told him that people living on the Atlantic coast of France ate it. The remark aroused Díaz Cárdenas’ curiosity. Over the next several years, he read everything he could find about Salicornia. Then in 2017, he founded a farm in Spain to plant and sell this unique plant, gaining wide attention gradually.
Scientists have found that Salicornia is usable in all growth stages. Its seeds contain all essential acids, healthy fats and abundant minerals. The plant shows great potential in medical research. Its burnt parts can even be used to make cleaning supplies. Salicornia can be grown in places that don’t compete with conventional agricultural land, and can also act as nature-based protection against soil loss. “In desert and coastal saline lands,” says Mette Hedegaard Thomsen, a chemical engineer at Aalborg University, “Salicornia can absorb large amounts of salt and heavy metals from the soil, gradually improving soil quality and stopping local desertification.”
Despite its huge potential, planting Salicornia still faces challenges. Dionysia Lyra, a scientist at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, points out that salt will build up in soil without enough rainfall to wash it away, which will restrict Salicornia’s young plant growth. She believes more research is needed to explore the long-term effects of soil salinization through irrigation (灌溉). “With continuous research, this climate-adaptable superfood will surely benefit humans more widely,” she says.
What is special about Salicornia?
A. It is water-free. B. It is desert-only.
C. It is salt-tolerant. D. It is soil-harmful.

A. To explain Salicornia’s planting tips. B. To illustrate Salicornia’s rich nutrients.
C. To list Salicornia’s medical potentials. D. To display Salicornia’s ecological values.
What is the Lyra’s attitude toward planting Salicornia?
A. Blindly confident. B. Cautiously optimistic.
C. Logically pessimistic. D. Distrustfully uncertain.

Does the experience of beauty show up in the brain? Though personal tastes create diverse aesthetic (美学的) opinions, scholars believe universal aesthetic patterns exist in humanity. A team led by Francesco Goretti has conducted research to seek solid evidence for aesthetic feelings.
An experiment was launched at an Italian historic museum. As volunteers wearing devices with 32 electrodes (电极) appreciated historic collections and gave beauty ratings, researchers recorded their brain and physical changes in real time. On this basis, researchers further studied brain wave distribution during aesthetic judgments. They used scanning to record two people’s brain activity at the same time, checking if their neural (神经的) signals matched when viewing the same exhibits.
Now researchers have identified patterns of activity in the brain’s reward, sensory and emotional networks. By measuring heart rate, breathing and sweat, as well as shifts in neurochemicals, they can determine the intensity of a person’s aesthetic engagement. Similar neural responses appear when people appreciate beautiful works, which shows aesthetic experience is probably rooted in shared brain functions.
Nevertheless, the study is far from perfect. Susan Magsamen, the founder of the Center for Applied Neuroaesthetics, points out that some parts of artistic experience cannot be detected by sensors. As every aesthetic moment is shaped individually, quantification should only serve as a tool to study art, instead of reducing art to plain numbers. Goretti expresses that the signals being measured, such as brain waves and heart rates, are incredibly complex to interpret, meaning more participants are needed for the research team.
Researchers explore how the brain and body react to aesthetic feelings to uncover art’s scientific value. Quantifying aesthetic moments means far more than pure scientific research. “The arts are the language of the human race, our deepest and earliest form of complex communication and connection,” Magsamen says. “They help us communicate and connect with one another, just as they did in the past. To understand the aesthetic experience is to understand what makes us most human.”
Why did the participants grade historic collections?
A. To classify diverse beauty. B. To adjust aesthetic patterns.
C. To track their brain changes. D. To assess the exhibits’ value.
What does Goretti’s research find?
A. The function of aesthetic feelings. B. The uniformity of aesthetic experience.
C. The intensity of aesthetic engagement. D. The shift of universal aesthetic patterns.
What may be one major limitation of the research?
A. Measurement oversimplifies art. B. Sensors can’t track aesthetic feelings.
C. Body’s responses are hard to detect. D. Aesthetic moments are highly individual.
What is the study’s value according to Magsamen?
A. Uncovering brain secrets. B. Exploring human essence.
C. Bettering social interactions. D. Quantifying aesthetic patterns.

Most kids love birthday parties with princesses, superheroes or cartoon characters. But Jalyn Miranda, a mother from Indiana, held a special butter-themed birthday party for her 3-year-old daughter Milena. The party’s decorations and games were all designed based on the girl’s love for butter.
The great party idea came from the mother’s daily life. The 24-year-old nurse planned the party months earlier and asked her daughter about her favorite things. To her surprise, the little girl said she loved butter in her sweet kid voice. Miranda thought this idea fitted her daughter perfectly. Since Milena was two years old, she often secretly took butter from the fridge and ate it directly, which became a funny family story.
When Miranda told her husband about the plan, he felt unsure about it. He worried the strange butter theme would feel awkward for their party guests. He was also concerned that the busy party work would tire his wife out, because she had just had a new baby not long before. However, Miranda stuck to her plan. She said this fresh theme was much better than common party styles, and respecting children’s true hobby was the best gift for kids. Finally, the husband let go of his anxieties and agreed to prepare the butter party together.
The couple spent about two weeks making party things by themselves every night after their two kids fell asleep. They made beautiful paper chains with butter patterns together. Miranda also made a big butter stick decoration for the party center. She bought cheap boards from a local store, then cut, colored and put the big model together in two nights. Besides, other family members helped a lot too. Milena’s grandma cooked nice food with butter. Her grandpa also made butter-themed clay toy sets as small gifts for little kids at the party.
