Passage 15
On the night of Nov 30, 1835, a boy named Samuel Clemens was born in Florida, US. Many years later, the world would know this boy as Mark Twain.
Mark Twain is one of the greatest US writers of all time. Some people even call him the father of American literature.
Like many US writers of his day, Twain had little school education. As a teenager, he worked as a printer. Later, he worked as a riverboat pilot, miner and freelancer for newspapers. These experiences gave him wonderful writing material.
Mark Twain is considered the greatest humorist of his age. His jokes go to the roots of human nature. In 1873, Twain released a book called The Gilded Age. The book made fun of the very wealthy people of the time.
Besides humor, Twain developed a unique writing style that was very American. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885 in the US) describes the adventures of a boy, Huck Finn, and a black slave, Jim. Twain used dialects in the novel, making the character’s speech sound like real Americans: using local dialects, newly invented words, and regional accents.

Twain’s writing style has influenced many writers. “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn,” Ernest Hemingway wrote in 1935.

Different kinds of sports influence our body in different ways, so choosing proper exercise becomes important for middle school students’ physical development.

If you keep jogging 30 minutes every morning, your blood will move faster and you won’t feel sleepy in daytime classes. However, running right after full meals is a terrible choice; it will bring stomachache easily.
Swimming is called full-body sport. When you swim, nearly all parts of your body move and get exercise. It is especially suitable for students who have joint problems or easily get tired. But remember never swim alone in wild rivers or lakes without adults’ protection. It’s very dangerous.
Playing badminton or table tennis is great for our eyes and arms. During the game, people need to follow the fast-moving ball all the time, which helps relax tired eyes after long-time reading.

①Last summer, I joined a two-week cultural exchange camp in New Zealand. It was my first time to experience foreign culture in person, and it left me an unforgettable lesson about cultural respect.
②I lived with a local host family. On my first dinner there, I tried to be polite by picking up food for my host parents as I usually do in China. However, they looked a little surprised and gently refused my kindness. I felt confused and upset at that moment.

I told them our manners show respect and care for others. They were interested and praised our warm cultural customs.
