I had been looking forward to it for weeks. But at the roller coaster, my stomach felt too tight to say anything at all. The big girl beside us was Tasha, my best friend Dan’s sister. She was a singer. She was fantastic on the stage. Just the image of her up there made me think she was so cool. Our roller coaster car pulled up, and my friends rushed forward, I felt my legs couldn’t move. All I could think about was the roller coaster might fly off into the sky. Without a word, I turned, ran out of the line. I knew what people were saying about me, but I didn’t care. I just kept moving past the crowd, found a bench ( 长椅 ) near the bathrooms to sit down and put my head in my hands. “Hey! Steve! Are you okay? ” I looked up. It was Tasha! “Oh, uh, yeah, I just started feeling, um, sick.” I responded. “You know, it’s okay if you were scared. Everyone gets scared.” She said. “You don’t.” I said in a low voice. “I’ve seen you on that stage. You were fearless.” “I’m glad it looks like I’m not scared!” Tasha smiled. “But that’s not true. I get really scared and nervous before I perform.” Before I noticed she was on the bench by my side, her words moved on. “Hey, look, singing is important to me. And I want to share what I love with my people. So, even if I’m scared. I do it anyway. I push through the fear and just get up and do it. Is taking roller coaster important to you?” “Yeah, it is. And I want to be able to look back and remember having fun with my friends. I don’t want to remember running away and sitting alone by the bathrooms.” “Everyone gets scared, but brave people don’t let fear control them.” She looked into my eyes. Still being lost in what she said, I saw my friends coming towards me. I got up and went with them to the coaster. When we were leaving, Tasha took a photo of my big smile in front of the coaster. I put it on my door. It stayed there through all four years of my high school, a reminder of what was more important to me than fear. 24.What problem did Steve have on this trip? For many years, humans have used dried natural sponges to paint, clean up and take in water. They are good at catching tiny particles (颗粒) in their many pores. Now, as scientists around the world are beginning to show, sponges’ pore-filled forms mean that they could offer a solution to a big challenge of our time: microplastic (微塑料) pollution. Recently, Chinese researchers published a study describing their development of a new man-made sponge. Tests show that when a plastic-filled liquid (液体) is pushed through the sponge, it removes the microplastics from the liquid. Though the effectiveness of sponges differed in experiments depending on the concentration (浓度) of the plastics and the nature of the liquid, researchers could remove up to 90% of the microplastics under the most favorable conditions. These new sponges are made mostly from starch (淀粉) and gelatin (明胶), making them light and easy to transport. According to a materials chemist at Ocean University of China who got involved in the study, researchers can make sponges more or less porous—by changing the temperature when mixing the ingredients. This decides what size particles can be collected—highly porous sponges have lots of very small pores, which is good for catching very tiny particles. According to the chemist, the sponges, if produced at an industrial level, could be used in wastewater treatment plants or in food production equipment to take away harmful chemicals. It would also be possible to use sponges like this in washing machines to collect microplastics produced when clothes are washed, suggests a chemist from Zurich. Yet challenges remain. One of them is that starch and gelatin are important to the food industry, meaning that there could be competition for the key ingredients in the future. However, similar sponges can be made with different materials, such as the sugar taken from the shells of certain ocean animals. Another challenge is that during the process of producing these new sponges, formaldehyde—a highly harmful chemical—is used. Scientists around the world are working to upgrade the production so that they can make a completely environmentally friendly sponge. As microplastic pollution is getting more serious, these new sponges give us reason to be hopeful. It’s like giving the earth a helping hand to stay clean and healthy. 27.According to the passage, the new sponges could be used to ________. A.take microplastics out of a liquid B.test the nature of the plastics in a liquid C.change the temperature of a plastic-filled liquid D.replace plastics with harmless materials in a liquid 28.What can we learn from the passage? A.It’s difficult to find the ingredients for the new sponges. B.The new sponges would increase food production in factories. C.The production of the new sponges is environmentally friendly. D.How porous sponges are decides what size particles can be collected. 29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.New Sponges: A Modern Tool to Recycle Plastics B.New Sponges: A New Invention for Plastic Production C.New Sponges: A Hopeful Solution for Microplastic Pollution D.New Sponges: A Green Product to Break Down Microplastics 【答案】27.A 28.D 29.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了一种可以收集水中微塑料的海绵。 27.细节理解题。根据“Tests show that when a plastic-filled liquid (液体) is pushed through the sponge, it removes the microplastics from the liquid.”可知,这种新型海绵可以用来从液体中取出微塑料。故选A。 28.细节理解题。根据“This decides what size particles can be collected—highly porous sponges have lots of very small pores, which is good for catching very tiny particles.”可知,海绵的多孔程度决定了可以收集到的颗粒的大小。故选D。 29.最佳标题题。根据“As microplastic pollution is getting more serious, these new sponges give us reason to be hopeful. It’s like giving the earth a helping hand to stay clean and healthy.”可知,本文主要介绍了一种可以收集水中微塑料的海绵,这些海绵给了我们解决微塑料污染的希望。故选C。 D In many areas of life, people compete even when it does not benefit them. Office workers stay late at work to avoid looking lazy. On social media, people feel pressured to post perfect photos. These situations all come from a problem called the theater effect, which explains why people find it hard to stop competing, even when it is unnecessary. The theater effect happens when one person tries to do better, forcing others to follow. In the end, everyone works harder, but no one truly benefits. Imagine watching a movie—if the people in front stand up, those behind must stand too. Finally, everyone is standing, but the view remains the same. A well-known experiment at Stanford University tested this idea. Researchers invited 200 people to bid (竞标) for a $100 bill. The highest bidder won, but the second-highest still had to pay. At first, bids were small, but as the price neared $100, people refused to stop. Some even bid more than $100 just to avoid losing their earlier bids. This irrational behavior shows that once competition begins, people realize that it’s hard to stop competing, even when it no longer makes sense. The theater effect comes from early human survival instincts (本能). Back then, the dopamine system (多巴胺系统) in our brain made us feel good about short-term success, like catching food, because it ensured survival. Today, this same system drives us to aim for victory in competitions—even when the results are meaningless. However, modern life is different. Today, while basic needs are no longer a big problem for us, we should learn to think clearly. Then how can we stop this kind of useless competition? First, we should know that we don’t need to win all the time to prove our value. Real growth means doing better than before, not better than others. Second, we should take a moment to ask ourselves, “Are we doing it because we truly enjoy it, or just because we are afraid to be left behind?” Another important point is to aim for meaningful goals, not just to win. Focus on what truly matters, and feel peace in your heart—that is how we find real happiness. So next time you feel pressured to “stand up”, just because others do, ask yourself: Is this really the best choice for me? 30.According to the passage, which is probably the example of the theater effect? A.A family enjoys a quiet dinner without surfing the internet. B.A company gives praise to workers for their continual efforts. C.People set a long-term goal to exercise more for better health. D.Students sign up for more classes because others are doing so. 31.What does the word “irrational” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A.Unreasonable. B.Worthless. C.Meaningful. D.Beneficial. 32.The writer probably agrees that ________. A.joining in competitions is a good way to show your value B.it is wise to stop and think before joining in a competition C.competition is important and always helps us move forward D.following others is a safe way to avoid making wrong choices 33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To compare research findings on over-competition. B.To guide people to go for more successful achievements. C.To encourage people to care less about their basic needs. D.To advise readers to make choices that truly suit themselves. 根据第1段“people compete even when it does not benefit them”及第2段“forcing others to follow”可知,该现象的核心是“因他人行为而被迫跟随”。故选D。 31.词句猜测题。根据文章第3段实验描述“Some even bid more than $100 just to avoid losing…”,结合下划线词“irrational”的语境,可知这种行为是“不理智的”。选项A“Unreasonable”与之匹配。故选A。 32.观点态度题。根据第5段“we should take a moment to ask ourselves, “Are we doing it because we truly enjoy it, or just because we are afraid to be left behind?””和第6段“Is this really the best choice for me?” 四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分) If traditional Chinese culture were a gold mine (金矿), then Zhong Yetang would be the miner. Zhong is now a full-time vlogger with almost 200,000 followers on a social platform. Zhong has a special style as she tries to bring ancient history back to life in a creative way. She is finding a relationship between traditional culture and modern design. “I don’t want people to see some Chinese ancient culture as boring and far-off,” she said, “we have duty to make the past serve the present and it can be cool and fashionable and something we can play with.” She recreates dishes from ancient books, makes short plays that tell ancient people’s life stories and compares Chinese customs with similar Western ones. For example, she played two roles as the ancient beauties Xishi and Yang Yuhuan, making them compete in a rap battle with each other. In another video, Zhong wears costumes (服装) from the 56 ethnic (民族的) groups of China. Half of them were bought, and the other half were self-designed. It took her almost two years to prepare for it. “I didn’t expect that it would take so long and that I’d face so many challenges,” she said. To make the clothing true to the ethnic groups, Zhong studied a lot of reading material and got information from local people. But she found that some culture had been lost. “I’m impressed most by the Hezhe ethnic group. Their clothes were made from fish skin,” Zhong said. “But due to its lack of practical value, fish skin was gradually replaced by silk and cloth. As a result, fewer people now know how to make it.” She tried hard to restore one of these costumes as authentically (真正地) as possible. After studying in the US for three years, she found that many Americans were curious about Chinese culture. That inspired her to devote herself to becoming a “gold miner of traditional Chinese culture” after she graduated. She is making her videos available on various popular video platforms. 34.What special style does Zhong have? 35.What did Zhong do to make the clothing true to the ethnic groups? 36.What inspired Zhong to devote herself to becoming a “gold miner”? 37.What do you think of Zhong’s actions towards Chinese culture? B This was our last trip before high school. A.New Sponges: A Modern Tool to Recycle Plastics B.New Sponges: A New Invention for Plastic Production C.New Sponges: A Hopeful Solution for Microplastic Pollution D.New Sponges: A Green Product to Break Down Microplastics D In many areas of life, people compete even when it does not benefit them.
