In the countryside of America, there are not many landmarks, because there are no towns or buildings within miles (英里). If people show you the way, they can say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
How do people in Canada show the way? They use time, not miles.“Is it far from here to the post office?” you ask. “No,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes’ walk from here.” You ask, “Then how many miles?” They don’t know.

But in fact, the teacher is not the first person to do this. The work of knitting sweaters for penguins started over 20 years ago.
In the late 1990s, there was an oil spill (石油泄漏) near Philip Island, Australia. The spill left many penguins covered in oil. Although people took quick action to save them, many penguins died or lived in bad health later.

To help penguins, some groups called on people to knit sweaters for them. The groups wanted to give the sweaters to penguins so that they could wear them while they were waiting to be cleaned. The sweaters could help them stay warm and stop them from taking oil into their bodies. Many people gave a hand.

Traveling is a wonderful way to relax and learn new things. Most students love traveling during holidays. Last summer vacation, I took a four-day trip to a beautiful mountain city with my parents. This pleasant journey left me with unforgettable memories and special experience.
We set off early on the first morning by high-speed train. Looking out of the window, green mountains, clear rivers and wide farmlands came into our sight one after another. Food is very important for everyone. Healthy food can make us strong and energetic, while unhealthy food will bring health problems. As middle school students, we are growing up fast, so we need to pay more attention to our eating habits every day.
Three meals a day are necessary and we can’t skip any of them. Breakfast is the most important meal in a whole day. After sleeping all night, our body is short of energy. A good breakfast can help us start a new day full of power. We can eat eggs, milk, bread and fresh fruit in the morning. These foods are rich in protein and vitamins, which are good for our brain and body growth. Many students get up late and go to school without breakfast. Lunch gives us energy for afternoon study and sports. We should eat enough rice, vegetables and proper meat. Vegetables carry lots of fiber and keep our stomach healthy. Chicken and fish are great choices of meat, they are easy to digest and won’t make us fat. Too much fried food and spicy food are not suitable for teenagers. They may hurt our stomach and cause sore throat easily.
Dinner should be light and simple. We’d better not eat too much before going to bed. Heavy food will bring heavy burden to our body when we sleep. Besides three main meals, some healthy snacks are acceptable. We can eat apples, bananas and nuts in free time. But we must stay away from junk food such as potato chips, ice cream and sweet candies. They taste delicious but have little nutrition.

In America, people often eat fast food like hamburgers and hot dogs, but now more people start to care about healthy eating.

However, in modern life, many people eat in front of the TV or while using their phones. This is bad for digestion (消化). If you pay attention to what you eat, you will enjoy the food more and eat less.

In different countries, neighbourhood culture is different, but the spirit of helping each other is the same. Let’s look at how people in China and Canada care for their communities.
In China, “Close neighbours are better than distant (遥远的) relatives” is a famous saying. People in Chinese neighbourhoods often share food with each other. For example, if a family cooks delicious dumplings, they will send some to their neighbours. During festivals like the Spring Festival, neighbours visit each other and give lucky money to kids. Community centres organize many activities, such as dragon dances and tea parties, to help people get to know each other.
In Canada, people are also friendly and helpful in their neighbourhoods. Many Canadian families hold “Garage Sales” (车库甩卖) in their yards. They sell old things like books, clothes and toys at low prices (低价). Neighbours often come to buy things and chat. Some neighbourhoods have “Block Parties” in summer. People bring food and drinks to share, and kids play games together.
Both Chinese and Canadian neighbourhoods value volunteer work. In China, volunteers help the elderly cross the road and clean the community. In Canada, many teenagers volunteer to do shopping for old people. And they also help old people get their medicine (药物).
The ways are different, but the core (核心) of neighbourhood culture is the same: people care about each other and work together to make their communities better.
