On a sunny day, hundreds of volunteers arrived at the Yangtze River in Yichang, Hubei province.
The workers on board of a special ship nearby were about to release about 230,000 Chinese sturgeons (中华鲟) back into the waterway, where the fish naturally lay their eggs.
The event’s organizer, the CTGC (China Three Gorges Corporation), also supports a research center to make sure such releases are successful.
Set up in 1982, the center’s job is to monitor the level of biodiversity (生物多样性) in the waters near the dam, the world’s largest hydropower facility (水力发电设备).
The sturgeon-releasing event was part of a long-running effort to protect the Yangtze River’s ecosystem.
The Chinese sturgeon is known for its hard, protective scale (鳞甲). People call it a “living fossil” (活化石) because its long history and physical characteristics which have remained almost unchanged over millions of years.
But sadly, because of overfishing, pollution, and the effects of dam, the wild sturgeon population in China has dropped to dangerously low levels. In response, people have held more release events and put more effort into breeding (繁殖) more of the fish.
These release events are easier said than done, however. In the early days, the survival rate of freed sturgeons was quite low. Jiang Wei, an engineer at the research center, said that in 1985 the people who did this job before him started to study how to breed sturgeon, but there weren’t any books or information about it at that time.
Over the next 10 years, they found the key factors affecting the well-being of young fish, such as food, water temperature and quality, and did experiments to prevent diseases. “By 1995, the body length of the released fish had reached more than 30 centimeters, and more of them survived in the wild.” said Jiang.
Thanks to their continued efforts,21 million endangered fish have been released into the Yangtze since the CTGC was set up about 30 years ago, according to data provided by the organization. This is a great achievement in protecting the river’s weak ecosystem.

“What if the books are broken or lost, and the small box may be empty soon.”
Li Yu refused to step forward. But during the next few days, she found the box was filled with different books: picture books for kids, novels for teenagers, and even history books for the old. On Earth, we use bricks (砖块) to build houses, but what about building things on the moon? ▲ Scientists at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) have developed “lunar bricks”. They hope to use the bricks to build a research station on the moon.
To make the bricks, the scientists used a lunar soil simulant (模拟月壤). The bricks are more than three times stronger than normal red bricks. They also have special structures, which were used in ancient Chinese buildings. This makes it possible to simply put these bricks together.
Professor Zhou Cheng from HUST said that they had tested five different kinds of simulated lunar soil compositions (成分) and used three ways to harden them. In this way they could choose the best materials for making the bricks. “Lunar soil isn’t the same everywhere on the moon,” Zhou said, “For example, one of the kinds tested simulates the lunar soil at the landing site of ‘Chang’e 5’, which is mainly basalt (玄武岩).”
The lunar bricks need to be tested well before being used because the moon has an extreme environment. Quakes often happen there. And it gets as hot as 180℃ during the day and as cold as -190℃ at night. The lunar bricks have been sent to China’s space station on the “Tianzhou 8” spacecraft. There, scientists will carry out tests to see how well the bricks work in space. The first brick is expected to return to Earth by the end of 2025.

“What if the books are broken or lost, and the small box may be empty soon.”
Li Yu refused to step forward. But during the next few days, she found the box was filled with different books: picture books for kids, novels for teenagers, and even history books for the old. Some people left small notes in the books, writing down their reading feelings. Others put small gifts like paper stars beside the books, making the box full of warmth.
Li Yu changed her mind and took out her favorite book with a note: “This book tells about friendship — hope it warms your heart.” Weeks later, Li Yu found her book was gone, and a new book was in its place, with a note on it: “Thank you for your sharing! Your words made my day.” She felt excited about it.
