If I hadn’t been a struggling violinist, I might have never become a writer. In fourth grade, my school had an orchestra (管弦乐团) program, and I signed up to learn the violin with my friend Amy. We both loved the idea of being in the orchestra and walked together to our music lessons every week.
Our orchestra teacher, Mr. Brown, was strict. He told us that if we damaged our instruments, we would be kicked out of the program because the school couldn’t afford new ones. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very good at the violin. One day, while practicing, the bridge of my violin flew off and some parts broke.
Scared of Mr. Brown’s reaction, I tried to fix it myself with some glue. But when he saw my bridge, he told me I couldn’t be in the orchestra anymore. Instead, he suggested I join the singing club.
I switched to the singing club and found I enjoyed singing with others, even though I didn’t have a great voice. Later, the junior high chorus held auditions (试音) for the All City Honor Chorus, and I was one of only five girls from my school to audition. Because of this, I made the chorus.
After a performance, my English teacher asked if anyone in the chorus wanted to write an article for the school newspaper. For some reason, I raised my hand. I loved reading, but I had never thought about writing before. However, when I saw my name and words in print, I knew I wanted to write more.
The next year, I became the editor of the school newspaper. I realized that writing was my true passion. Looking back, I understand that if I hadn’t broken my violin and joined the singing club, I might never have discovered my love for writing.
Years later, I saw Amy at a reunion. She told me she had become a professional violinist in Australia. I thought, “That could have been me.” But Mr. Brown’s decision led me to a different path — one filled with words and stories. I’m grateful for that turn in my life and for Mr. Brown’s unexpected guidance.
26. Why did the writer leave the orchestra program?

A. Her meeting with Amy again at the reunion.
B. Her wish to become different from Mr. Brown.
C. Her chance to write for the school newspaper.

28. Which of the following best describes the writer?

Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine doctors, 26-year-old Mike from Kazakhstan has wanted to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and become a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since he was a child.
So when a TCM hospital that was jointly built by local and Chinese health workers officially opened about a year ago in Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, Mike jumped at the chance to work there.
“Many Kazakh patients had already looked for other means — even traveling to other countries — to find treatment for their diseases before visiting us, and they were amazed at the immediate results of TCM treatments such as acupuncture (针灸), cupping and massage,” Mike said.
Li Honggang, a hospital manager from the Xi’an TCM Hospital, working alongside Mike, said that because of the country’s cold, windy climate and a traditional diet heavy in beef and lamb, a large number of patients suffer from diseases like high blood pressure and leg pain. TCM treatments can play a perfect role in treating these diseases.
“Despite the language barrier (障碍), local patients give us a thumbs-up to express their thanks,” Li said. “Moreover, more and more people come to our hospital. Sometimes we ask them how they first learn about the hospital, and many of them say through word of mouth.”
“I am deeply moved by the interest of Kazakh people in TCM,” said Mike. As for the future, Mike hopes more TCM experts from China will come to share their knowledge and experience with Kazakh people, helping build more TCM clinics and expand their services in Kazakhstan. “I want to be a bridge between TCM and Kazakhstan,” he says. “I want to help my people understand and appreciate this ancient wisdom so that they can live healthier and happier lives.”
30. Why did Mike decide to work as a TCM doctor?
A. He needed a chance to work abroad.
B. He wanted to earn more money.
C. He was influenced by his family.
D. He hoped to become famous.
31. What do local patients think of TCM treatments?
A. They are surprised at how quickly the treatments work.
B. They prefer to travel to other countries for treatment.
C. They find the treatments difficult because of the language barrier.
D. They believe the treatment s only work for high blood pressure.
32. What does the underlined phrase “through word of mouth” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. By reading information about the hospital.
B. By hearing about the hospital from others.
C. By visiting the hospital and learning about it.
D. By getting help from doctors from other countries.
33. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce how TCM is helping people in Kazakhstan.

Have you ever forgotten to lock the door of your house? Or, have you ever forgotten to switch off the TV or computer? These kinds of things often happen to us. However, in the not-too-distant future, we will be living in smart homes that will lock the door or turn off the machines for us.
Intelligent Controls
Today, we have to use switches for our lights, locks or controls for our appliances. In the future, we will be using advanced technology every day for automatic control of everything in our home. The future home will use systems to tell when you leave home each morning, and then go into an energy-saving mode all by itself. Your home will also learn your daily routine and preferences, so everything will be ready for you when you get home each evening. Your lights will turn on when you enter the door along with your favourite music or TV programmes, and you will find your dinner already prepared for you.
Regular Health Checks
In addition, your smart home will be monitoring your health for you every day. Your bed, for example, will record how well you sleep every night. It will also be checking your body weight. If you start to have sleep or weight problems, it will send a warning to your phone. It will also give you suggestions on a healthier diet and how to sleep better. They can warn you early on if there is something abnormal or serious illness, and possibly save your life.
No More Dangers at home
Smart homes will be able to prevent serious damage from accidents. For example, if a water pipe is broken, or there is something wrong with wires, your smart home will check it. This way, you will be able to fix the problem before your home becomes flooded or catches fire.
This smart technology is not a daydream. Many of these new inventions are used in some homes. It will take some years before most new homes begin to use this new technology.
37. What will a future smart home do when people leave home?
A. It will turn on people’s favourite music.
B. It will reduce energy use automatically.
C. It will remind people to lock the door.
D. It will clean the rooms before people return.
38. How might a person feel after receiving an early health warning from a smart home?
A. Angry because it cannot give any useful health advice.
B. Relaxed because the smart home can cure the illness by itself.
C. Thankful because the warning may help avoid a health problem.
D. Worried because the warning means a serious illness.
39. What does the sentence “This smart technology is not a daydream.” in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Smart technology will disappear after a few years.
B. Smart homes can now be found in every new house.
C. People only imagine smart homes but never use them.
D. Some smart home ideas are already becoming real.
40. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Living better with smart homes
B. New technology for sleep and diet
C. Automatic controls for daily home life
D. Protection from accidents in the home

A. She found violin lessons too boring to continue.
B. She broke her violin and failed to fix it properly.
C. Mr. Brown wanted her to join the school newspaper.
D. Amy asked her to try singing instead.
27. What led the writer to find her love for writing?
A. Her meeting with Amy again at the reunion.
B. Her wish to become different from Mr. Brown.
C. Her chance to write for the school newspaper.
D. Her success in learning the violin again.
28. Which of the following best describes the writer?
A. Quiet and talented. B. Shy and careless.
C. Positive and open-minded. D. Careful and hardworking.
29. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. Many hands make light work.
B. Writing helps people find their voice.
C. Success always comes from hard practice.
D. An unexpected change can lead to true love.

B. New technology for sleep and diet
C. Automatic controls for daily home life
D. Protection from accidents in the home

首字母i,因空格前为 his(形容词性物主代词),后需接名词,结合上下文,他展示了自建气象站,参观者对他的发明/创意/才智印象非常深刻,可填invention(发明)、idea(创意)或 intelligence(才智)。

Our school club recently held an Environmental Awareness Week, and many beautiful posters ________ ________ ________ in the teaching building.
【答案】 ①. were ②. put ③. up
表示“张贴”的动词短语是put up,而主语“posters”与动词“put up”之间是被动关系,应用被动语态,由“held”可知,句子时态是一般过去时,一般过去时的被动语态的谓语结构为“was/were+done”,主语“posters”是复数,be动词应用were,put的过去分词还是put,故填were;put;up。
As a member of the club, David ________ a lot of time ________ students the importance of waste sorting.
【答案】 ①. spent ②. showing
【详解】原句中“花(时间)、展示”是关键词,spend time (in) doing sth意为“花费时间做某事”;主语David是人,句子描述过去发生的动作,spend变为过去式spent;show sb sth表示“向某人展示”,此处用动名词showing。
Then, the students asked David ________ ________ ________ turn waste plastic bottles or plastic bags into useful things.
【答案】 ①. whether##if ②. they ③. could
With the help of David, the students ________ ________ in the environmental practice.
【答案】 ①. made ②. progress
故填made progress。
________ ________ David felt when more and more students brought their own water bottles and shopping bags to school!
How ②. proud

There is always someone in our life that helps us grow. The person who has had a great influence on my growth is my PE teacher.
What impressed me most was his patience. I used to be so scared of the 800-meter race that I would always find excuses to escape from the training. Rather than pushing me hard, he ran alongside me every morning, cheering me on when I felt exhausted. His words—“The hardest step is always the last one”—still ring in my ears.
The moment I crossed the finish line, I realized that his guidance was like a miracle to me. He taught me that courage is not the absence of fear, but moving forward despite it. Such is the teacher who has reshaped my mind. I am now determined to face any challenge with persistence.
