Before the new school year started, we got a letter from the principal. It clearly said that the school bus would pick up the kindergartners (幼儿园学生) at the bus stop. Parents were not allowed to ride with them or go to school for drop-off, because there wasn’t enough parking space for extra cars.
That sounded fair, but the school didn’t know my two daughters.
Chloe and Morgan were five years old. They were very shy. If someone knocked on the door, they would hide. Even ice-cream or toys couldn’t get them out. When we went outside, they would hold onto my legs — one on each side.
I was worried about their first day of school. Would they cry? Would they get scared and hide under the bus seats? It was hard to imagine them walking into a big school without me.
On that morning, the sun was shining. The girls wore new dresses and light-up shoes. And my husband took a photo of them smiling bravely. When the bus came, they climbed on and waved at us. I smiled and waved back. Then the bus left.
When my husband turned around, he noticed what I was wearing. I had on my running shoes, and the school was a few miles away.
“You’re not going to run after the bus, are you?” he asked.
“No,” I said. And I didn’t! I ran before the bus. I ran as fast as I could towards the school. The bus passed me near the end, but I kept going. Then I hid behind a big car and watched closely.

1.根据第一段末句“Parents were not allowed to ride with them or go to school for drop-off, because there wasn’t enough parking space for extra cars.”可知,学校不让家长开车送孩子上学是因为没有足够的停车位。
2.根据第四段首句“I was worried about their first day of school.”可知,对于女儿们第一天上学,作者感到很担忧。
3.首先是开学前家人收到校长的信(The family received a letter from the principal.),接着女孩们上车离开(The girls got on the bus and left.),然后作者悄悄跑向学校(The writer ran to the school quietly.),最后作者看到女儿们下车(The writer saw her daughters get off the bus.),所以正确顺序是②→①→③→④。
4.根据倒数第三段中“Chloe gave the principal a shy smile. Morgan stayed close, holding her sister’s hand.”和倒数第二段“They were safe. They were brave.”

Should School Start Later?
Since 2018, the Chinese education departments have already made a rule that primary and middle schools should start later in the morning. Studies show that when schools start before 8:30 AM, students often get less than the recommended 8~10 hours of sleep. Not having enough sleep can lead to poor concentration (专注), lower grades, and even health problems. We asked four students and an expert about school starting time. Here’s what they said:
Lina, 13 (Shanghai)
“Waking up at 6:30 AM leaves me tired. My first class is math, but I can’t focus. Studies show teens’ brains work best after 10 AM. Later starts would help us learn better.”
Jay, 12 (Shenzhen)
“I disagree. Starting at 7:30 AM means we finish by 4 PM. This gives us enough time for my basketball practice and robot club. If school started later, I’d miss these important activities!”
Ming, 14 (Beijing)
“The real problem is homework! I stay up until 11 PM finishing homework. Even if school started later. I’d still be tired. We need less homework, not later starts.”
Emma, 11 (Guangzhou)
“My school moved start time from 7:40 to 8:20 AM last term. Now I eat breakfast properly and feel more awake. Our test scores improved 5% too!”
Dr. Chen (Sleep Expert)
“Teenagers’ biological clocks (生物钟) are different from adults’. When school starts before 8:30 a.m., it’s like making adults work at 5 a.m. This causes sleep loss, affecting memory and health.”
1.According to the studies, what problem can early school start time cause?
A.Better concentration.
B.Lower grades and health problems.
C.More time for breakfast.
D.Higher test scores.
2.What can we know from Jay’s opinion?
A.He prefers to sleep late. B.He values after-school activities.
C.He doesn’t like math class. D.He wants more homework.
3.What does Ming think is the real problem affecting students’ sleep?
A.Early school starts. B.Too much homework.
C.Lack of breakfast. D.No after-school activities.
4.What is the author’s main purpose in using the comparison (对比) “When schools start before 8:30 a.m., it’s like making adults work at 5 a.m.”?
A.To show early school time is bad for students.
B.To say school times are good now.
C.To tell students to sleep in class.
D.To explain biological clock differences.
5.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Emma’s school saw better test scores after changing start time.
B.Dr. Chen says teenagers have the same biological clocks as adults.

The mangrove wetlands (红树林湿地) of Shenzhen’s Futian and Hong Kong’s Mai Po are very valuable. Every year, many waterbirds fly from East Asia to Australia. These wetlands are a key place for them to rest. These years, Shenzhen and Hong Kong have worked together to protect these important wetlands.
Why are these mangrove wetlands so important? Because they are like nature’s protectors. They make a natural wall, protecting coasts from big storms (暴风雨). Besides, the thick forest of mangrove trees provides a perfect home for birds. They build nests there and look after their babies. “Even during storms, baby birds are safe in the mangroves,” said Simon Wong from Hong Kong’s nature team. What’s more, mangroves help take in CO₂ and clean the water. As a result, they are helpful for both nature and humans.
To protect the wetlands together, Shenzhen and Hong Kong have used different ways since 2023. One of them is to protect birds’ homes with the help of modern AI technology. Thanks to their efforts, the population of endangered birds in the wetlands has grown. For example, there were only about 300 black-faced spoonbills (黑脸琵鹭) around 30 years ago. Now there are nearly 7,000.
In November 2024, the two cities started a new part of their teamwork. The International Mangrove Center (IMC) in Shenzhen opened. The IMC does research on mangrove protection, shares useful ideas and gives classes to the public. Its opening helps Shenzhen and Hong Kong work better to protect the wetlands. It also shows the world how cities can join hands to protect the environment.
1.What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Cities. B.Wetlands. C.Waterbirds. D.Mangroves.
2.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Mangroves are unsafe for baby birds.
B.Mangroves can protect tall buildings from storms.
C.Mangroves can produce a lot of CO₂ and dirty water.
D.Mangroves are good for not only nature but also people.
3.Why does the writer talk about black-faced spoonbills’ population?
A.To introduce modern AI technology.
B.To tell readers what the birds look like.
C.To explain why endangered birds are important.
D.To show the success of protecting birds’ homes.
4.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.Students can do research on mangrove protection in the IMC.
B.The IMC guides cities to work better together and protect nature.
C.The IMC mainly helps the two cities to build more mangrove forests.
D.People don’t need to worry about wetland problems because of the IMC.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Mangroves provide safe homes for waterbirds.
B.The IMC in Shenzhen helps protect the wetlands.
C.There are more black-faced spoonbills in Shenzhen.
D.The two cities protect the mangrove wetlands together.

2.主旨大意题。根据“As a result, they are helpful for both nature and humans.”并结合本段内容可知,本段明确说明红树林的作用:形成天然屏障保护海岸,为鸟类提供安全家园,吸收 CO₂ 和净化水源。即红树林不仅对自然有好处,对人类也有好处。故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据“Thanks to their efforts, the population of endangered birds in the wetlands has grown.”可知,第三段提到黑脸琵鹭的数量从30年前的约300只增加到近7000只,是为了举例证明保护措施(如AI技术)的成功成果。故选D。
4.推理判断题。根据“Its opening helps Shenzhen and Hong Kong work better to protect the wetlands. It also shows the world how cities can join hands to protect the environment.”
Saving electricity can help stop the earth getting warmer and save money. Changing your habits is a good way to use less electricity. 1
Enjoy natural light. Open the window and let the sunshine in! Also, try to use natural light whenever possible. 2 The same is true when you work in an office. Natural light also makes you happier.
3 This is the easiest, most convenient way to save electricity, and it really works. Start paying attention to how many lights are on in your house at any time. Think about how many lights you really need to be using at once. When you leave a room, make a habit of turning off the lights.
Use less hot water. Heating water takes a lot of energy. It is not necessary to take cold showers, but paying attention to how much hot water you use, and how the water is heated, can save a lot of electricity and money. 4
Use the air conditioner only when needed. Sometimes it is necessary to use the air conditioner, but there is no reason to have it on from the beginning of spring to the end of summer without ever turning it off. 5 Doing so can save much electricity.
A.Turn off the lights.
B.Turn on the air conditioner in summer.
C.For example, take showers instead of baths.

Travel can make you feel happier, connect you with nature, and bring you closer to loved ones. But sometimes, people come back from a trip feeling more stressed than before. 1
Take a few short trips.
Studies show that the good feelings from a trip will slowly disappear after you return. Also, planning a trip can make you happier than the trip itself. With short trips, you get to plan more often, and the positive feelings from each trip can last until the next one. 2 You don’t have to wait a whole year to feel that happiness again.
Have a relaxing plan.
If you want to relax, you shouldn’t plan every minute of your trip. But don’t have any plan at all. Too many plans will tire you out. Too few will leave you bored and stuck on your phone. 3 So you will have something to do without feeling rushed or tired. 4
One study found that people who exercise on vacation sleep better, feel better, and have healthier heart rates. Exercising in nature, like hiking or swimming, can lower your stress. Exercising outdoors can lower anxiety and stress.
Turn off or delete some apps for a while.
Research has shown that spending less time on your phone can make your vacation more enjoyable. Try deleting (删除) your work email app while you’re travelling. 5

Nan Rendong was born in Liaoyuan, Jilin Province in 1945. 1 Because of his strong love for astronomy (天文学) and his nation, he wanted to build a big radio telescope (望远镜) for China. Later, he started the project. This project has a nickname—“Tianyan” or “Sky Eye”. People also call it FAST. And because of his hard work, everyone calls him the “Father of China’s Sky Eye”.
In the 1990s, Nan Rendong worked in Japan as a visiting teacher. At that time, scientists in China who studied stars did not have good tools. So in 1994, he made a big choice. 2 He said no to a lot of money in Japan because he loved China and wanted to help. 3 He planned to build a large telescope in China. It was a very hard job. I am Daisy from Grade 7. Last week, our science teacher, Mrs. Brown, taught us about electricity and how important it is. Then she gave us a special task: to try living without electricity for a weekend. Our family thought it sounded interesting, so we decided to do it together.
It was hard. After dark, we read by candlelight. We usually watched movies on Friday nights, but without electricity, we played video games until our tablet ran out of battery.
Without electricity, some things in the fridge quickly went bad, such as milk and yogurt. It got hot inside, but no air conditioner. We had to wash all our clothes by hand, and this took us a lot of time.
However, there were also nice things about living without electricity. On Sunday, we went on a bike trip to the countryside and visited my grandparents. We enjoyed a picnic, played chess, and painted pictures. At night, we listened to my granddad’s stories under the stars.

On March 21, about 30 international students from Shenzhen University visited OCT Wetland Park in Nanshan District. This park is an important stop for migratory birds (候鸟) from around the world. Those birds fly a long way from one country to another.
The visit started the 2026 “APEC China Year” programme. It helps young people from different countries share ideas about environmental protection. At the showroom, volunteer (志愿者) teacher Xie Yunwen gave a talk in English. She explained the importance of wetlands and how people protect birds there. She also talked about mangroves—special trees that grow near the sea. Students learned how the wetland changed from farmland to a protected natural park.
After the talk, students went outside to watch birds. They used binoculars to see more than 10 kinds of birds far away. They watched how these birds built their homes and looked for food.
In the sharing time, Yulia from Russia talked about waste-sorting (垃圾分类) in different countries. She said people should use less plastic. Milana, another Russian student, has studied birds in Northern Europe. She said OCT Wetland is a great place for bird protection.

Their job is to go around the city and check public signs in different languages. They look at metro posters, city maps, street signs, directional guides, and even bus stop boards. They want to make sure every sign is correct and clear.
If people find a wrong or broken sign, they can use the “Volunteer Shenzhen” mini-program (小程序) on their phones. They just need to take a photo and send it. The mini-program will get the location automatically without any help. Then the workers will come and fix the sign.

Finally, I saw my daughters get off the bus. Chloe gave the principal a shy smile. Morgan stayed close, holding her sister’s hand.

D.Find other ways to cool yourself down when possible.
E.Here is some advice on how to save electricity at home.
F.This can greatly lower the amount of electricity you use during the day.
Choose a sun-drenched spot.
Sunlight is good for your mind and body. One study found that people in sunny places felt more health benefits from their vacation than those in cloudy places.
A.Go for a hike or a swim.
B.Choose a comfortable hotel to sleep better.
C.The best choice is to plan a half-day’s worth of activities.
D.It’s hard, but it is an important step to help you relax more.
E.Here are some easy ways to help you get the most out of your travels.
F.That’s why taking a few short trips may be better for your mental health than a long one.
China is a large country with many amazing natural landscapes. Different places have different features. Here are three famous places you must know.

Your school days should be some of the best and happiest days of your life. You shouldn’t waste (浪费) this wonderful time. 1
Be active in school. Don’t say things are difficult or boring. Be interested in school life and your school subjects. 2 Taking part in activities makes you grow better. Be quick to put your hand up. Go around the school with a big smile.
3 If you don’t eat a good breakfast, you will be thinking about food in class. If you go to bed late and do not have enough sleep, you will be sleepy in class. Play some sports to keep your body strong.
Never put off (推迟) today’s work to tomorrow. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish a race if you rest all the time. So remember: 4
Face the problems bravely. Sometimes they are only the result of misunderstanding (误会). Don’t be too embarrassed to ask for help. You are young. No one will think you can do everything!
5 Don’t waste life lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play a sport, learn the piano, read a book, practise English or help someone with problems. There are always a lot.
A.Keep healthy and strong.
B.Get on well with schoolmates.
C.Spend the weekends wisely.
