The attractive Kanas Lake
Have you ever dreamt of visiting a place where the scenery changes like a magic picture book? Welcome to Kanas Lake in Xinjiang, a fairyland on earth that will take your breath away. Kanas Lake, the second largest deep-water lake in China, has a water depth of 188.4 metres.
The most amazing thing about Kanas Lake is its “vertical (垂直的) painting” of nature. If you look from the foot to the top of the mountains near the lake, you can see seven different landscapes. They range from green grasslands and dense (茂密的) forests near the water to snowy peaks high above.
Kanas Lake is also a master of colour. Its water is not just blue; it changes with the seasons and weather. In summer, it looks milky green-blue, while in autumn, it turns deep sapphire blue. One summer day, Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher joined a picnic party. The highlight of the day was a trip to McDougal’s Cave, a huge, dark cave with hundreds of winding paths and hidden rooms. The children explored the cave for hours, laughing and shouting. Tom and Becky wandered (漫游) off from the group, curious to see a “secret room” that Tom had heard about from a local fisherman.
They walked deeper and deeper into the cave, admiring the strange rock formations and dripping water that glistened (闪光) like diamonds in their candlelight. But when they tried to retrace (折回) their steps an hour later, they realized they were completely lost. The cave was pitch-black in the areas where their candles didn’t reach, and the winding paths all looked identical (相同的). Becky burst into tears, clutching Tom’s arm tightly. “Don’t worry, Becky,” Tom said, his voice steady even though his heart was racing. “We’ll find a way out. I promise.” He shared his last piece of bread with her and kept exploring new paths, calling out for the picnic group every few minutes.
On the third day of being lost, their candles burned out completely. In the total darkness, Tom felt his way along the cave walls until his hand touched a small, damp hole in the rock. He crawled (缓慢行进) through it and found a narrow stream flowing steadily. Remembering that water always leads to the outside, he guided Becky along the stream. After walking for what felt like hours, they saw a faint glimmer of sunlight—it was the cave’s hidden exit!
As they stumbled (踉跄) out into the daylight, Tom noticed a rusted iron box half-buried (半埋的) behind a large boulder near the exit. He pried (撬开) it open with a rock and gasped—inside were hundreds of gold coins, silver rings, and precious jewels, the stolen treasure that Injun Joe had hidden in the cave years before. Tom and Becky were soon rescued by a search party, and the treasure made Tom an instant hero in St. Petersburg.
