William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family — both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally depended on very traditional forms, he brought modern factors to them. As his literary life continued, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats’s death in 1939, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:
Earth, receive an honoured guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.
Let the Irish vessel (船) lie
Emptied of its poetry.
4. Which of the following can describe Yeats’s family?
A. It was a typically wealthy family. B. It had an artistic atmosphere.
C. It was shocked by Yeats’s choice. D. It filled Yeats’s childhood with joy.
5. According to the passage, what do we know about Yeats?
A. He founded the first Irish theater.
B. He mainly wrote modern-style poems.
C. He produced his best works in his last 25 years.
D. He rose to fame after winning the Nobel Prize.
6. What feeling is expressed in W. H. Auden’s lines?
A. Disappointment. B. Admiration. C. Anxiety. D. Emptiness.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Yeats’s national honor. B. Yeats’s artistic beliefs.
C. Yeats’s pain and delight. D. Yeats’s art and influence.

Recycling lithium-ion batteries to get back important metals like lithium, nickel and cobalt is much less harmful to the environment than digging raw metals from the ground, according to a new Stanford University lifecycle analysis published in Nature Communications.
The study measures the environmental effect of this recycling process and finds that recycling produces less than half the greenhouse gases of usual mining. It also uses about one-quarter of the water and energy needed to mine new metals. The environmental benefits are even bigger for the scrap (废料) stream, which accounted for about 90% of the recycled supply studied.
The environmental impacts of battery recycling depend a lot on where the processing plant is located and what kind of electricity it uses. “A battery recycling plant in areas that depend heavily on electricity from burning coal would see a smaller climate advantage,” said Samantha Bunke, one of the study’s three lead researchers. “On the other hand, fresh water shortages in areas with cleaner electricity are a big worry,” she added. Most of the study’s data for battery recycling came from Redwood Materials in Nevada. It is North America’s largest industrial-scale lithium-ion battery recycling plant and benefits from the cleaner energy mix of the western U. S.
Redwood, which has since started building a new plant in South Carolina, was one of the first to apply the lessons from this project to its own work and environmental footprint. Its founder, JB Straubel, said that the insights of this research have played a key role in refining Redwood’s battery recycling processes. “Thanks to the researchers’ observations, we have further reduced our environmental footprint,” he noted.
While the U.S. now recycles about 50% of available lithium-ion batteries, it has successfully recycled 99% of lead-acid batteries for many years. “Given that used lithium-ion batteries contain materials with up to 10 times higher economic value, the chance is huge,” senior author William Tarpeh said. “For a future with a much larger supply of used batteries, we need to design and prepare a recycling system today — from collection to making new batteries again — with very little environmental impact,” he added. “Hopefully, battery makers will also think about how to make their batteries easier to recycle in their future plans.”
8. What does the Stanford study say about battery recycling?
A. It is worse than mining. B. It uses more water than mining.
C. It is better for the environment. D. It produces the same greenhouse gases.
9. Why is Redwood Materials mentioned?
A. To show the key role of battery industries. B. To highlight its reduced climate advantage.
C. To criticize its harm to the environment. D. To show the practical use of the research.
10. What does the underlined word “refining” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Bettering. B. Shaking. C. Starting. D. Limiting.
11. What is Tarpeh’s suggestion for battery producers?
A. Stop recycling lead-acid batteries. B. Focus on their processing cost.
C. Make batteries easy to recycle. D. Limit the use of lead-acid batteries.
D
Is friendship with a chatbot as good as friendship with an actual person? Valerie Tiberius, in her new book Artificially Yours, dives headfirst into the philosophical puzzle of chatbot companionship and what it reveals about the nature of friendship.
Concerned with ethics, moral psychology, and well-being, she approaches the subject not as a technologist but with a philosophical interest in what makes friendships tick. The book’s central aim is less about predicting technological change than about explaining what friendship is and why it’s valuable — and why there is no perfect replacement for human friends.
She defines the ideal friendship as an enjoyable, close relationship built on shared activities between people who care about each other for their own sake. But few things in life are ever ideal, including friendship. Tiberius demonstrates how different kinds of friendships can be valuable in different ways: they can be pleasurable or useful, they can shape who we are and how we see ourselves, and the best ones are good for their own sakes. With this framework in place, she turns to the question of whether chatbots can be genuine friends.
Machines can have goals — much like a chess program that aims to win — and intelligence can be understood as the ability to accomplish complex goals. But consciousness is the ability to have a subjective experience, which contemporary chatbots lack. Chatbots can mimic some features of friendship — empathy, attention, companionship — which is part of their powerful appeal. Although talking with chatbots can help people cope with life’s challenges, they cannot genuinely admire us, share our vulnerability, or understand human suffering and mortality.
Can future superintelligent chatbots self-improve and overcome their limitations? Tiberius observes, “I don’t see any reason to trust that AI left to learn on its own will learn what we want it to.” The profit motives of AI companies also give her pause. Ultimately rejecting both techno-pessimism and techno-optimism, she argues for a middle ground: AI companions may offer comfort or teach us important skills, potentially enriching and supplementing the irreplaceable value of human friendship.
12. What is the book aimed at?
A. Defining what friendship is scientifically.
B. Proving chatbots can never be genuine friends.
C. Predicting future AI companionship technologies.
D. Defending the irreplaceability of human friendship.
13. What might Valerie Tiberius agree with?
A. All friendships are not ideal. B. Ideal friendships are all alike.
C. Imperfect friendship is worthless. D. Mutual caring makes friendship valuable.
14. What does Para. 4 focus on?
A. The limitations of chatbots as friends.
B. Machines’ ability to achieve complex goals.
C. How chatbots mimic empathy and attention.
D. How chatbots help in overcoming challenges.
15. What’s Tiberius’s attitude towards AI companions?
A. Optimistic. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful. D. Pessimistic.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. D

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. A 15. B
【解析】

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“The book’s central aim is less about predicting technological change than about explaining what friendship is and why it’s valuable — and why there is no perfect replacement for human friends. (这本书的核心目的与其说是预测技术变革,不如说是解释友谊是什么、为什么它有价值,以及为什么人类朋友没有完美的替代品)”可知,这本书旨在捍卫人类友谊的不可替代性。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“She defines the ideal friendship as an enjoyable, close relationship built on shared activities between people who care about each other for their own sake. But few things in life are ever ideal, including friendship. (她将理想的友谊定义为一种愉快而亲密的关系,建立在彼此关心对方、并为了对方而付出的共同活动中。然而,生活中很少有事物是完美的,友谊也不例外)”可推知,Valerie Tiberius会赞同的观点是“并非所有友谊都是理想的”。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“But consciousness is the ability to have a subjective experience, which contemporary chatbots lack. Chatbots can mimic some features of friendship — empathy, attention, companionship — which is part of their powerful appeal. Although talking with chatbots can help people cope with life’s challenges, they cannot genuinely admire us, share our vulnerability, or understand human suffering and mortality. (但意识是指拥有主观体验的能力,而现代聊天机器人缺乏这种能力。聊天机器人可以模仿友谊的一些特征——共情、关注和陪伴——这也是它们极具吸引力的部分。尽管与聊天机器人交谈有助于人们应对生活中的挑战,但它们无法真正欣赏我们,分享我们的脆弱,或理解人类的痛苦与死亡)”可知,该段聚焦的是聊天机器人作为朋友的局限性。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Ultimately rejecting both techno-pessimism and techno-optimism, she argues for a middle ground: AI companions may offer comfort or teach us important skills, potentially enriching and supplementing the irreplaceable value of human friendship. (她最终拒绝了技术悲观主义和技术乐观主义,主张一种中间立场:人工智能伴侣可能提供安慰或教会我们重要技能,从而丰富和补充人类友谊不可替代的价值)”可知,Tiberius承认人工智能伴侣有积极作用,但强调其作用在于“补充”而非“替代”,这是一种有限度的肯定,是谨慎的态度。
