A tsunami is a huge and powerful ocean wave. It is mainly caused by strong earthquakes under the sea. When a powerful undersea earthquake hits, the seabed rises or drops suddenly, pushing a large amount of seawater to move crazily. Then the seawater forms giant waves and spreads out fast, creating a tsunami.
Unlike common sea waves that only affect the water surface, tsunami waves go through the deep ocean water. Common waves are small and gentle, but tsunamis are long and full of huge energy. In the deep sea, tsunami waves are low but move at a very high speed. When they get close to shallow coastal waters, their speed drops but the height rises quickly. Finally, the powerful waves crash into the land.
Tsunamis are extremely dangerous. They reach the shore rapidly, washing away buildings, trees and taking people’s lives. Many people lose their homes and family members in tsunamis.
It is hard to tell when a tsunami will come. So we must remember safety rules. If we live near the sea, we must watch for warning signs. Time flies when you play with your smartphone. But when you start to study or work, one hour feels like a whole year. Why do we easily feel bored with studying?
It all boils down to a small and hidden thing: dopamine (多巴胺). Dopamine is a kind of “pleasure chemical” in our brain. It makes people feel happy and relaxed. Our brains release it when we eat delicious food, take exercise or get some rewards.
Similarly, our brains will also release dopamine when we use smartphones. A US writer named Steven Kotler said that checking phones can make dopamine increase by 400%. But why? When we spend time on social media, we never know what we will see next or who will comment on our posts. This uncertainty makes our dopamine system active. We will feel excited when we wonder if our friends reply to us. Once our expectations are met, our brains release dopamine at once. However, studying is full of hard tasks. It has no exciting uncertainty. Without such fun, we get bored with study easily.
Is there any way to change this situation? Trevor Haynes from Harvard Medical School gives some advice. If we turn off phone notifications or change the screen into black and white, phone apps will become less attractive. We can also set time limits for every app to stop overusing phones.
As for studying, we can check our progress daily or weekly and give ourselves small rewards. We can also learn more interesting knowledge related to our textbooks. Try to use what we have learned in real life. In this way, studying will become much more fun.

A.Setting time limits on everything you do.

During the 2016 Rio Olympics, people were surprised to see the round, purple marks on the body of the famous American swimmer Michael Phelps. What happened to him? In fact, he just visited a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and had “Cupping” (拔火罐).
Massage (按摩) and Acupuncture (针灸) are two other important kinds of TCM. Chinese massage can make people relaxed and fresh. In acupuncture, doctors put long needles into the patients’ heads, faces, arms… It takes pain (疼痛) away, though the look is funny.
TCM is an important part of Chinese culture. The earliest medical classic (名著) in China, Huangdi’s Classic on Medicine (《黄帝内经》), came out more than 2,000 years ago. The book is about the relationship (关联) between man and nature. In Chinese culture, yin (阴) and yang (阳) are the two parts of nature. Nature keeps balanced (平衡) if yin and yang work well together. The human body needs such a balance, too. TCM helps to do that. For some health problems, a doctor of TCM will not give the patient medicine. Instead, he may provide just a food plan and the right ways to eat.
For example, it is common (常见的) to eat on the way to school, at our desk, or in front of the TV. But TCM thinks it’s wrong. Here are the right ways: Sit down to eat. While eating, turn off the TV and get away from the work desk. Eat seasonal foods. It’s good for people to eat strawberries in May instead of in December. Do not miss any of the three meals. Also, get your body moving often, just as the saying goes, “Running water is never stale.”
Nowadays, traditional Chinese medicine is becoming more and more popular around the world. A report says that people in 183 countries and areas are now using TCM.

When you travel, how do you usually keep a record of the places you have visited? Some people take photos or videos, others write travelogues (游记). But Berk Armagan has chosen a different way to do so—painting on paper cups.
Berk is a 26-year-old artist from Turkey. In 2016, he started painting on cups while traveling around the world. So far, he has been to more than 60 cities in 25 countries.
The artist usually decides what to paint before he visits a city. But sometimes, he also draws inspiration from the streets and buildings after he arrives. He makes use of his time on the road to paint. This gives him a limited amount of time for each piece of work. This pressure, he thinks, makes the creation process more interesting.
Berk has shared his artworks on the Internet. These paintings and the story of his travels have won him many followers. The artist also sells his artworks. Part of his income (收入) helps him continue his travels. He uses the rest of the money to help people and animals in need. For example,he has provided food and shelter for homeless animals in Turkey.

We all go to school to study and learn different skills, but have you ever been taught in your dream?
Wang Xizhi was a Chinese calligrapher, traditionally called the Sage of Calligraphy (书圣). Born in Linyi, Shandong Province, he spent most of his life in what is now Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. At the beginning, Wang Xizhi learned the art of calligraphy from Lady Wei. But later through practice, he excelled his teacher.
Nobody knows who taught him after Lady Wei. However, there is a story that Wang achieved his success by learning from his dream. It is said that Wang would practice calligraphy every day. Still, he was never pleased with what he wrote. One day, he was so tired that he fell asleep at his desk. In his dream, he saw an old man who said to him with a smile, “I will teach you something and you will find it very helpful in the future. Now reach out your hands.” Only half believing, Wang reached out his left hand. The old man wrote a character in his hand and said with a nod, “Now, you will be a calligrapher.” Then he disappeared in the air. Wang looked at his hand and saw a character “永”. He thought it over for a whole night and finally realized that this character had all the basic strokes (笔画) in forming Chinese calligraphy.

When we get a tsunami warning, leave the seaside at once for higher ground and stay calm. Nature is powerful, so we should respect it. Learning about tsunamis helps us stay safe when a disaster comes.
1.What is the biggest difference between tsunami waves and common sea waves according to the text?
A.Tsunami waves are higher near the deep sea.
B.Common sea waves have more energy than tsunamis.
C.Tsunami waves go through the deep ocean water.
D.Common sea waves move faster than tsunami waves.
2.In which order does a tsunami happen?
① The waves become much higher near the coast.
② An undersea earthquake makes the seabed move.
③ The giant waves rush into the land quickly.
④ Seawater moves violently and forms huge waves.
A.②④①③ B.②①④③ C.④②①③ D.①②④③
3.Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.We can exactly know the coming time of a tsunami.
B.Tsunamis are gentle waves that won’t hurt people.
C.People near the sea should pay no attention to warning signs.
D.Keeping calm is important when a tsunami comes.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Tsunamis can only do little harm to coastal areas.
B.Knowing about tsunamis can help us protect ourselves.
C.We don’t need to learn anything about natural disasters.
D.All undersea earthquakes will bring terrible tsunamis.
5.Where can you read the passage?
A.A story book. B.A science book. C.A newspaper. D.A natural magazine.

1.根据第二段中的“Unlike common sea waves that only affect the water surface, tsunami waves go through the deep ocean water.”
2.根据第一段中“When a powerful undersea earthquake hits, the seabed rises or drops suddenly,”以及紧随其后的“pushing a large amount of seawater to move crazily.” 再根据第二段中的“When they get close to shallow coastal waters, their speed drops but the height rises quickly. Finally, the powerful waves crash into the land.”
3.根据第四段中的“When we get a tsunami warning, leave the seaside at once for higher ground and stay calm.”
4.根据第四段最后一句“Learning about tsunamis helps us stay safe when a disaster comes.”
1.According to the writer, when students study, they .
A.are getting happier B.feel time pass more slowly
C.have more dopamine D.need to set time limit
2.What might the underlined phrase “boils down to” mean in Paragraph 2?
3.In what situation do people have more dopamine?
A.When their expectations are met.
B.When they face less uncertainties.
C.When they know what will happen next.
D.When they stay in a familiar environment.
4.Which of the following might work well in making learning interesting?
A.Setting time limits on everything you do.
B.Reading the interesting topics instead of your textbooks.
C.Stopping playing and finding more interests in real life.
D.Using what you learn from textbooks to influence real life.
5.From the passage, we can infer (推断) that .
A.dopamine has nothing to do with our feelings
B.studying is more interesting than playing on smartphones
C.if we make studying more uncertain, it may be less boring
D.apps are always more attractive than studying material
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.D 5.C
1.根据原文第一段“But when you start to study or work, one hour feels like a whole year.”
2.“boils down to”所在句“It all boils down to a small and hidden thing: dopamine” 意为“这一切____一个隐藏的小东西:多巴胺”,结合上下文语境,此处表达“归根结底、根本原因是”的意思。
3.根据原文第三段“Once our expectations are met, our brains release dopamine at once.”
4.根据原文最后一段“Try to use what we have learned in real life. In this way, studying will become much more fun.”
1.What is TRUE about Michael Phelps?
A.He is a famous TCM doctor.
B.He gave people a big joy.
C.He draws people’s attention to “cupping”.
D.He doesn’t believe in the traditional Chinese medicine.
2.The medical classic Huangdi’s Classic on Medicine ________.
A.is mainly about how to take medicine
B.came out at the beginning of last century
C.advised us how to get on well with people around us.
D.tells us our bodies can be healthy if yin and yang work well together.
3.If you want to stay healthy, what advice will you get from a doctor of TCM?
①Not all the health problems need medicine
②A food plan is all you need if you are not feeling well
③Eating seasonally provides a good way to enjoy the food
④Having a meeting during a meal may help people eat more and save time
A.①② B.③④ C.①③ D.②④
4.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 can be translated as “________” in Chinese.
5.What’s the purpose (目的) of the passage?
A.To tell people that Massage and Acupuncture are important.
B.To sell the medical classic, Huangdi’s Classic on Medicine
C.To show how TCM works and solves health problems.
D.To show why TCM is the most popular in the world now.
