解题分析:根据文章第二段“making ‘durian freedom’ — the ability to buy expensive favorite foods without financial pressure — a reality for most people”可知,榴莲自由指消费者无需承受经济压力,可随心购买榴莲等高价水果,与B选项表述完全契合。

易错点:多选 / 漏选,误把C项(时令水果种类减少)当成正确项;
27. C

解题分析:原文第二段「Unlike typical respiratory viruses that directly attack and kill lung cells, Andes virus targets the capillaries...Notably, infected blood vessel cells survive instead of dying」,普通呼吸道病毒杀死靶细胞,而安第斯病毒侵染的宿主细胞可以存活,对应 B 选项 It spares infected host cells(不杀死受感染的宿主细胞)。
解题分析:划线词 compact 出自第三段,前文「While most respiratory viruses possess over ten proteins, Andes virus has only four」,多数呼吸道病毒十多种蛋白,安第斯病毒只有四种,说明它基因结构简单,compact 对应 simple(简易的),选 B。
易错点:脱离上下文,误选 complex/unique
34.C
解题分析:原文第三段「When symptoms finally emerge, the disease progresses extremely rapidly...Fluid pours into the lungs within hours」,症状出现后数小时内液体涌入肺部,对应 C 选项 Lung fluid leakage occurs within hours after symptom onset。
解题分析:原文末段「Only plasma from recovered patients works for early-stage infections, as it contains virus-fighting antibodies」,康复者血浆对早期感染有效,对应 B。
解题分析:前文引出居家上学这种教育形式,空格后句 “In the United States, merely around three percent of school-age children are educated at home.” B 选项 “Homeschooling is still a relatively minor educational choice.(居家上学仍是相对小众的教育选择)” 总领后文数据,前后逻辑契合。
37.A
解题分析:本段首句总述家长选择居家上学有多方面原因,空后 “School bullying and frequent police presence on campus make some parents anxious about their children’s safety at school” 围绕校园安全隐患展开论述。A 选项 “Safety concern is a leading factor for this choice.(安全顾虑是做出该选择的主要原因)” 概括空后内容,起到总分衔接作用。
E 选项 “Others hold the view that official school education fails to meet their standards.(另一些家长认为公办学校达不到自身教育标准)” 承接上一条择校原因,并列补充家长不满常规教学的观点。
D 选项 “Some parents even adopt a flexible learning idea called unschooling.(部分家长甚至采用非制度化自主学习的灵活教育理念)” 引出新式自学模式,对应后文 student-led learning。
F 选项 “They share teaching resources and organize group learning and social events.(他们共享教学资源,组织集体学习与社交活动)” 中代词 They 指代前文 cooperatives,介绍社团具体做法,衔接前后。

56. has lasted
57. decorated
58. an
59. that
60. so
61. including
62. to experience
63. deeply
64. it
65. tiring
易错点:tiring/tired 分词形容词用法混淆。

A Wonderful Fujian Drama Festival Activity.
To enrich students’ campus life and promote traditional Chinese culture, our school held the Fujian Drama Festival exhibition in the school hall last Friday, in which all Senior Three students took part.
The activity featured a variety of wonderful programs. Professional artists performed classic Fujian local dramas vividly. Besides, they gave a brief introduction to the history and features of Fujian dramas. What’s more, some students were invited to learn basic drama gestures and interacted with the performers.

Many passers-by learned of his story and stopped to watch, offering sincere applause and blessings. For Pham, this was no longer a simple race, but a special journey to thank life and kindness.
Crossing the finish line, Pham felt a surge of emotion welling up inside him. He hugged Dr. Chiu tightly, tears of gratitude rolling down his cheeks. He knew clearly that it was the doctor’s timely rescue and professional help that gave him a second chance at life. This extraordinary experience taught him the true value of life. Section A Short Conversations(1~5)
M: Did you watch the football match between Quanzhou and Zhangzhou yesterday?
W: Unfortunately not. I was tied up with an urgent meeting and couldn’t make it.
M: What a shame! It turned out to be an exciting game. The Quanzhou team put on an outstanding performance.
W: Shall we bring an umbrella for our weekend picnic?
M: Probably not necessary. The weather forecast warned heavy rain these days, but it says fine weather is on the way for the weekend.
W: That’s really good news then.
M: Welcome to Kingston Hotel. What can I do for you?
W: Hi, I’m after a single room with a queen-size bed. I checked online and all rooms were marked fully booked.
M: Let me check our reservation system… One single room with a king-size bed has just become free, as another guest canceled the booking at the last minute.
W: How much does admission to the amusement park cost?
M: Rates differ. An adult ticket is 100 yuan, and a child’s ticket is half price. A family ticket covering two adults and one child enjoys a 10% discount on its original total cost.
M: Have you heard robots gave performances at a wedding last night?
W: Sure thing. I picked up the news on the radio while driving back home from my workplace. All the guests were amazed by this creative idea.
Section B Longer Conversations & Monologue
Conversation 1(影视节目 Ride the Wind|6~8)
M: Jenny, have you ever watched the popular show Ride the Wind?
W: I only watched a short preview clip and thought it was rather boring.
M: That surprises me. Almost all my friends and I enjoy it, though it is less fascinating than last year’s season.
W: Hmm, maybe I should give it a proper watch. When is the show regularly broadcast?
M: It airs every Friday evening. You can come over to my place this Friday and watch it together with my workmates.
W: Sounds nice, I’ll make time for it.
W: Mike, have you signed up for the school’s English Speech Contest?
M: I’ve registered already. Are you thinking about joining in too?
W: I haven’t made up my mind yet. Do the competition rules stay the same as last year’s?
M: Actually no. The Q&A session after speeches has been canceled this year. Contestants only need to memorize their manuscripts in advance and deliver speeches live on stage. Besides, participants have two options: speak based on assigned topics or compose a speech with their own personal stories.
W: It sounds attractive. I need several days to weigh my choices carefully.
W: Chris, you look upset. What’s troubling you?
M: I’ve lost my jacket somewhere in the shopping mall, and my wallet was inside the pocket.
W: When did you last have your jacket with you?
M: I had dinner at McDonald’s first, then went to a nearby bookstore to buy some books. I can’t figure out where I left it.
W: Don’t get too worried. Let’s go to the Lost and Found office first, where plenty of visitors hand in lost items. If we fail to find it, your dad will buy you a new jacket.
M: Thanks a lot for your comfort.
M: Good morning, dear listeners, welcome to China Daily Radio Program. Today our guest is Wang Yuehan, a visiting researcher from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and we’ll talk about the heated online topic “lying flat”. Welcome, Ms. Wang.
W: It’s my great honor to be here.
M: You’ve interviewed plenty of successful Chinese entrepreneurs. What leads to their success in your opinion?
W: From my field interviews, successful entrepreneurs stick firmly to their interests and realize success through continuous devotion and consistent hard work.
M: “Lying flat” has aroused widespread discussion online recently. How do you view this lifestyle among young Chinese?
W: I hold different opinions from some biased foreign media reports. Young people aren’t escaping struggle; they just choose a lifestyle different from their parents’. With the shift of social environment, an increasing number of youngsters turn hobbies into careers instead of working merely to survive.
M: I totally understand your viewpoint.
Monologue(欧洲极端高温天气|18~20)
Outdoor workers in France have been told to stay indoors if possible, after a record-breaking heat wave made their jobs unsafe. The hot weather meant much of the nation saw between 32℃ and 35℃ on Monday, with the southwest recording a high of 37.1℃. Meteo France, France’s weather agency, said it was the hottest day in May since records began. France usually sees temperatures of between 18℃ and 24℃ in May. Meteo France, the country’s weather agency, said temperatures would stay high all week, thanks to a “heat dome” that originated in Africa. The United Kingdom also recorded its hottest ever May day on Monday, with 34.8℃. Italy also saw temperatures of well over 30℃. And Spain is braced for up to 40℃ by the end of the week. The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service has said such extreme weather will become more common in Europe because it is warning faster than any other region due to climate change.

In recent days, a new term “durian freedom” has gone viral across China, as the prices of the once pricey tropical fruit have dropped sharply nationwide. Thanks to rising imports, improved logistics(物流) and abundant seasonal fruit supplies, durians, long viewed as a luxury treat, have become accessible to ordinary consumers.
Market data shows that some durian varieties have seen a 10% to 20% price drop compared with last year. In the past, a single durian could cost consumers 300 to 400 yuan. Surprisingly, many markets now sell durians for less than 100 yuan each, making “durian freedom” — the ability to buy expensive favorite foods without financial pressure — a reality for most people.
Thailand’s Monthong durian, the most popular type in the Chinese market, maintained a stable wholesale price year-on-year but fell 14% compared with early April. Vietnamese durians have witnessed an even steeper(更急剧的) price decline, with their wholesale price dropping over 30% yearly. Major retail chains have also cut prices to benefit customers, greatly stimulating market consumption.
As the world’s largest durian importer and consumer, China takes up 82 percent of global durian consumption. Its huge market demand has driven Southeast Asian producing countries to expand planting scales and increase fruit exports continuously. Besides sufficient supply, improved cold-chain transportation and integrated domestic market construction also play a key role in cutting durian prices.
The falling price of durians is not an isolated case. With the arrival of summer fruit harvests, the whole premium(高价的) fruit market has seen a general price correction. Cherry prices have nearly halved while lychee prices have also declined sharply due to soaring supply. Sufficient fruit output and mature transportation systems have made various high-quality fruits affordable for the public this summer.
24. What does “durian freedom” mean to Chinese consumers?
A. Free access to seasonal tropical fruits
B. Ability to buy durians without financial burden
C. Total freedom of choosing fruit varieties
D. Low-cost travel to durian-producing countries
25. Which type of durian experiences the most obvious price drop?
A. Domestic durians
B. Thai Monthong durians
C. Vietnamese durians
D. Imported mixed-variety durians
26. What contributes to the durian price decline according to the text?
a. Expanded fruit planting in Southeast Asia
b. Advanced cold-chain logistics
c. Reduced types of seasonal fruits
d. Integrated domestic market development
A. a, b, d B. a, b, c C. b, c, d D. a, c, d
27. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Summer fruit harvests boost market tourism
B. Durian price falls affect the whole fruit market
C. Multiple premium fruits see noticeable price drops
D. China leads global premium fruit consumption

New World hantaviruses like Andes virus cause deadly respiratory(呼吸的) diseases, yet they behave quite differently from common lung-damaging viruses such as influenza and COVID-19 viruses. Growing slowly in the human body but triggering swift deterioration, the virus claims up to 50 percent of infected patients’ lives. Surprisingly, however, survivors seldom suffer long-term organ damage.
First identified in the 1990s, Andes virus has recently caused an outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius, leaving three dead and nine seriously ill, with over 150 people under global quarantine. Unlike typical respiratory viruses that directly attack and kill lung cells, Andes virus targets the capillaries, tiny blood vessels across the body. Notably, infected blood vessel cells survive instead of dying, which is one of its most unique features.
Another distinctive trait lies in its simple genetic structure. While most respiratory viruses possess over ten proteins, Andes virus has only four. This compact genetic toolkit enables the virus to hide from the human immune system and replicate slowly without being detected. The incubation period can last up to 45 days, during which infected individuals show no symptoms. When symptoms finally emerge, the disease progresses extremely rapidly. The tight connections between blood vessel cells loosen suddenly, making capillaries leaky. Fluid pours into the lungs within hours, causing breathing failure, sharp blood pressure drop and even fatal shock.
Despite the deadly acute symptoms, the abnormal leakage can reverse completely within 48 to 72 hours for recovering patients. This quick recovery without lasting lung scarring is never seen in severe flu or COVID-19 cases. Scientists suspect antibodies produced during infection help control the virus, but exactly how the virus protects host cells remains a puzzle.
Currently, there are no targeted vaccines or specific treatments for hantavirus infections. Common antiviral drugs and steroid therapies have proven ineffective for severe cases. Only plasma(血浆) from recovered patients works for early-stage infections, as it contains virus-fighting antibodies. Researchers have also found that two immune substances, IL-6 and bradykinin, contribute to capillary leakage. Some existing trial drugs targeting these substances show potential to block fluid leakage. Scientists believe that combined drug therapies will hopefully reverse severe symptoms and save patients’ lives in future outbreaks.
32. What is a special feature of Andes virus compared with common respiratory viruses?
A. It kills lung cells rapidly.
B. It spares infected host cells.
C. It has more genetic proteins.
D. It causes permanent organ damage.
33. The underlined word “compact” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______.
A. complex B. simple C. stable D. unique
34. What can we learn about the infection of Andes virus?
A. Its symptoms develop slowly and mildly.
B. Immune system can immediately spot the virus.
C. Lung fluid leakage occurs within hours after symptom onset.
D. Most patients recover fully without medical treatment.
35. Which of the following is effective for early Andes virus infection?
A. Steroid treatment
B. Recovered patients’ plasma
C. Common antiviral drugs
D. Intravenous fluid transfusion

Not all parents expect their children to attend traditional schools. Instead, an increasing number of families choose homeschooling, a form of education where children receive individual teaching at home rather than in public or private schools. 36 In the United States, merely around three percent of school-age children are educated at home.
Parents turn to homeschooling for various practical and personal reasons. 37 School bullying and frequent police presence on campus make some parents anxious about their children’s safety at school. Besides, many parents prefer to combine religious and moral values with their children’s daily education, which regular schools cannot always satisfy. 38 Additionally, it is a practical option for rural families and travelling families, such as those with working parents in the entertainment industry.
One major advantage of homeschooling is that it enables personalized education. Parents can adjust teaching content and schedules to fit their children’s learning characteristics. They can either adopt standard textbooks or design exclusive learning materials. 39 This student-led learning method aims to inspire kids’ natural desire for knowledge.
Some people doubt that homeschooled children may lack social experience. To solve this problem, many homeschooling families have set up learning cooperatives. 40 In this way, these children get equal chances to communicate with peers and take part in typical school activities, including field trips and school dances.
Furthermore, homeschooling will not prevent students from pursuing higher education. Most colleges in the US welcome homeschooled applicants. The only requirement is that students need to prepare complete learning portfolios to prove their academic achievements.
A. Safety concern is a leading factor for this choice.
B. Homeschooling is still a relatively minor educational choice.
C. It also allows kids to learn at their own pace and interest.
D. Some parents even adopt a flexible learning idea called unschooling.
E. Others hold the view that official school education fails to meet their standards.
F. They share teaching resources and organize group learning and social events.
G. Traditional school education has long been questioned by many parents.

Tuan Pham, 47, was in high spirits when he reached the 12-mile mark of the Long Beach Half Marathon in October 2023. It was his seventh marathon, and he was looking forward to celebrating with his teenage son, who had run ahead of him. Feeling energetic, he took a couple more steps, and then everything went blank.
Pham had no memory of collapsing heavily to the ground. He lay still on the road as other runners passed by. Suffering from three blocked arteries, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He lost his pulse and breathing, falling into clinical death. According to medical data, the survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is less than 12%. For Pham, survival seemed almost impossible unless professional medical help arrived immediately.
Luckily, Ryan Chiu, a cardiothoracic surgeon from a local medical center, happened to be nearby. He had just finished brunch with friends and was about to leave a restaurant a few feet from the marathon route. Spotting the motionless Pham at once, Dr. Chiu instantly realized the deadly emergency. He rushed over and started professional chest compressions without hesitation. He also asked a passer-by to take over the compressions while he called the hospital, urgently arranging an operating room and a surgical team.
Soon, an ambulance arrived and rushed Pham to the hospital, with Dr. Chiu following closely in his car. The triple bypass surgery turned out to be a complete success. Pham eventually recovered fully. What amazed everyone was that a small accident of fate saved his life. Dr. Chiu had planned to leave the restaurant earlier, but his friend persuaded him to stay a few minutes longer to enjoy the ocean view. It was this tiny delay that made the life-saving encounter possible.
After recovering, Pham made a surprising decision. He decided to return to the marathon route to finish the last 2 miles he had left unfinished.

Consumers select durian at a supermarket in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, on May 11. JIA MINJIE/FOR CHINA DAILY
Durian prices are tumbling as booming imports, faster logistics and a wave of seasonal fruit make the tropical fruit increasingly affordable for consumers.
Prices for some durian varieties have fallen 10 percent to 20 percent from a year earlier, according to wholesale market data and retailers. Durian that once sold for as much as 300 yuan ($44) to 400 yuan each can now be found for less than 100 yuan in some markets, fueling social media buzz around achieving "durian freedom" — a phrase used by Chinese consumers to describe "unlimited" access to previously expensive foods.
Thailand's Monthong durian, the dominant variety in the market, traded at an average wholesale price of 24.15 yuan per 500 grams at Beijing Xinfadi wholesale market on Tuesday, roughly flat from a year ago, but down 14 percent from early April.
Vietnamese Monthong durians have seen steeper declines, with wholesale prices dropping to about 18 yuan per 500 grams, down more than 40 percent from the previous month and over 30 percent from a year earlier, according to market data.
Retailers are passing on the savings to consumers. Membership chains including Sam's Club are selling Thai Monthong durians for around 199 yuan per 3 to 3.75 kilograms.
"Overall sales volume has definitely increased by more than 20 percent year-on-year," said He Huaxin, head of community group buying at Beijing Xinfadi wholesale market. "Durian from multiple countries are now entering the market, with Vietnamese varieties showing particularly strong growth momentum."
China is the world's largest durian importer and consumer, accounting for an estimated 82 percent of global consumption.
The country's appetite for what is often called the "king of fruits" has prompted producing nations across Southeast Asia to rapidly expand cultivation and exports.
Analysts said falling prices also reflect improvements in the country's logistics and distribution infrastructure, particularly the expansion of cold chain transportation tied to the government's efforts and push for a more integrated domestic market.
The durian price slide is part of a broader correction in the premium fruit market in the country as summer harvests accelerate. Cherry prices have nearly halved from earlier this year, while lychee prices have also dropped sharply amid surging supply. According to price tracking data from Chinese resale platform Dewu.com, 1,000-gram packs of Grade 3 domestic cherries sold for about 189 yuan in early March. By May, during peak harvest season, prices for the same product had fallen to around 108 yuan, a decline of nearly 45 percent.
Meanwhile, in Hainan province, one of the major lychee-producing regions, daily outbound shipments have repeatedly exceeded 10,000 metric tons. Cumulative shipments since late March reached nearly 88,000 tons as of May 8, up almost 289 percent from a year earlier. Sam's Club has set the retail price of a 2.5-kilogram box of lychees at 66.6 yuan.

Tianjin drone show and robot carnival mark World Intelligence Expo events
About 1,500 drones lit up the night sky over Tianjin on Thursday, forming a 3D light show featuring local landmarks and imagery inspired by Haihe River culture, as the city hosted events tied to the 2026 World Intelligence Expo.
The performance accompanied the opening of the Intelligent Robot Carnival at the Cultural Center in Hexi district, a four-day event showcasing the latest developments in robotics and artificial intelligence.
Visitors watched robot boxing matches, dance performances, and calligraphy demonstrations designed to highlight advances in the intelligent robotics industry.
"Robots are an important carrier of artificial intelligence, facilitating the transition of AI from the virtual world to real life," said Yin Jihui, secretary of the Hexi district Party committee.
Among the exhibits, intelligent bionic quadruped robots demonstrated obstacle-crossing abilities, including climbing stairs and navigating slopes.
The C1-W robot, developed by Galileo (Tianjin) Technology, can carry up to 15 kilograms and operate for three to five hours, according to sales manager Zhao Kewen. Equipped with LIDAR and wide-angle cameras, the robots can generate real-time 3D maps and autonomously avoid obstacles.
"Nowadays, the recognition of intelligent products by the government and the public is increasing," Zhao said. "Sales in the first quarter of this year have roughly doubled compared to last year."
"In recent years, we have formed a relatively complete industrial ecosystem in the fields of industrial robots, specialized robots, and service robots," said Zhai Lixin, vice-mayor of Tianjin. According to an action plan for promoting innovation and development in AI (2025-2027), Tianjin plans to focus on the field of embodied intelligence to promote the research and application of underwater robots, industrial robots, and special-purpose robots.

Andes hantavirus has only four proteins yet is a master of manipulating cells and the immune system. Learning its secrets may lead to treatments for the deadly disease it causes. Shown is an illustration of a hantavirus particle.
New World hantaviruses such as Andes virus cause respiratory illness, but they hit differently than common viruses that lead to lung failure. The hantaviruses grow slowly and kill swiftly, claiming the lives of up to half of people they infect. Yet mysteriously, survivors are left with no lasting damage from the illness.
These are just some of the peculiarities that scientists have discovered and studied since the viruses were first recognized in the 1990s. What scientists have gleaned so far is informing how they monitor the more than 150 individuals worldwide currently in quarantine after the recent outbreak of the Andes hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius.
Already, three people have died in that outbreak and nine others are ill, some critically. Research into how the viruses behave in the body and how the body defends itself might also lead to treatments for future outbreaks.
Hantaviruses do things differently
Respiratory viruses such as influenza, RSV and the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 infect and kill the cells of the lungs, with immune system reactions furthering the damage. But even though New World hantaviruses cause a severe lung disease called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, they don’t attack lung cells.
Instead, the virus infects cells lining blood vessels throughout the body. The main target, says clinical virologist Pablo Vial, is the tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Vial directs the hantavirus and zoonoses program at the German Clinic at the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago, Chile.
Infected cells may lose some function, says Jonas Klingström, a virologist and immunologist at Linköping University in Sweden, “but they don’t die. They are not killed.”
Another peculiarity is that Andes virus, endemic to Chile and Argentina, and Sin Nombre virus, found in the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico, have only four proteins while other respiratory viruses have more than twice as many. Two of the four proteins help the virus enter cells, one replicates viral RNA and one forms the viral shell. Old World hantaviruses, known mainly from Europe and Asia and which tend to damage the kidneys, have an additional protein.
It’s a small tool kit, but hantaviruses make the most of it, evading the immune system while they slowly replicate. “They are really sneaky,” Klingström says. “They can both inhibit antiviral responses, but they also avoid activating them.”
It may take up to 45 days for an infected person to develop symptoms. Most people with Andes virus infections will get sick enough to need oxygen, but 40 percent will recover without serious medical intervention, Vial says. The rest will get severe disease that requires intensive care.
The science behind a speedy decline
At some point during an infection, the tight junctions where proteins weld blood vessel cells to their neighbors loosen, making blood vessels leaky. Blood plasma, the fluid part of blood, can seep out while blood cells stay inside. Scientists don’t yet know what turns on the tap.
It’s not viral replication, Vial says. Whatever it is, it happens fast, he says. Within hours, patients’ lungs fill with the leaking fluid, which disrupts their breathing. Their hearts fail and their blood pressure drops, putting them into shock.
The long gap between infection and symptoms, along with the fact that Andes virus is the only hantavirus known to spread from person to person, is why crew and passengers of the MV Hondius and people exposed to a cruise passenger on later airline flights, are being monitored for six weeks after their last possible exposure.
The speed from symptom onset to serious illness is partly why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has requested that the 18 Americans being monitored at special quarantine facilities in Omaha, Neb., remain there at least until May 31, even though some passengers have requested to quarantine at home.
Typically, 20 to 40 percent of people who are diagnosed with Andes virus infection die, Vial says. He has helped treat many of the nearly 1,500 Andes hantavirus cases that have been diagnosed in Chile since 1995, and has learned some lessons along the way about treating shock and putting people on ventilators without causing damage.
When a ventilator isn’t enough, doctors turn to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO. That’s a heart-lung machine that pumps blood out of the body, oxygenates the blood and returns it to the body giving ailing lungs and heart a rest. “I’ve been talking to patients at noon and at two in the afternoon, they’re already connected to mechanical ventilation, and at three, they are already on ECMO. So this is very, very fast development,” Vial says.
Andes virus infections cause fluid to leak into the lungs. Some people have mild cases with little fluid hazing X-ray images of their lungs (left). But in a majority of cases, fluid floods the small airways, giving the lungs the appearance of being stuffed with cotton (right). That degree of fluid build-up requires intensive care and perhaps being hooked to heart-lung machine to survive.Pablo Vial
Most patients who die do so either while being admitted to the hospital or within the first 24 hours after admission, Vial and colleagues discovered when reviewing 100 hantavirus cases treated at eight hospitals in Chile over about eight years. According to the unpublished data, there were 21 deaths among those cases.
Although giving intravenous fluids is the standard treatment for shock, Vial doesn’t advise that in patients with leaky blood vessels. That liquid ends up in the lungs, making matters worse, he says.
Almost as suddenly as the leaks spring, the spigots dry up and patients can recover. “It takes 48 to 72 hours for this biological effect to reverse and become completely normal,” Vial says. That’s unheard of among respiratory diseases. Often people spend weeks in intensive care units for severe flu or COVID-19 and are left with damaged, scarred lungs that may never fully recover.
Antibodies developed over the course of the infection may have something to do with getting the virus in check, but the immune system doesn’t cull the infected cells. How hantaviruses protect host cells remains a mystery.
Hantavirus treatments are lacking
Doctors can provide supportive care for symptoms, but they can’t stop the virus. There are currently no specific treatments or vaccines for hantaviruses.
Vial and colleagues have tried several ways to keep hantavirus patients off life support. An antiviral drug that stops hantavirus growth in lab dishes didn’t work in patients who were developing severe symptoms. Steroid treatment with methylprednisolone, which can help reduce damage in other respiratory illnesses, such as COVID-19, also didn’t work. Giving people plasma from patients who have recovered from a hantavirus infection does help when people are just developing symptoms, Vial says. Antibodies in recovered people’s blood may keep the virus from entering blood vessel cells.
Antibodies that linger for decades in people who have recovered from infections of Puumala virus, an Old World hantavirus, could also fight Andes virus, says Mattias Forsell, an immunologist at Umeå University in Sweden. Puumala virus is carried by bank voles and caused, on average, about 3,100 cases annually in Europe from 2010 through 2020, particularly in Finland, Sweden and Germany.
Forsell and colleagues have tracked hantavirus antibody levels in blood from about 150,000 participants in the Northern Sweden Health and Disease Study. In areas where Puumala virus is endemic, about 11 to 12 percent of participants have antibodies against the virus. Those antibodies persist for at least 22 years, the team found. “These infections may actually provide immunity for life,” Forsell says. In unpublished studies, Forsell’s team has found that some of those antibodies can latch onto other hantaviruses, including Andes virus, and so may be the basis for future therapies.
Finding out what causes the leaking and how it gets plugged might also lead to new treatments. Klingström and other researchers have found elevated levels of certain immune system proteins called cytokines in people with severe hantavirus disease. Among the cytokines suspected of prying open the connections between blood vessels are the proteins interleukin-6 (IL-6) and bradykinin.
Though IL-6 is typically made by immune cells and sometimes liver cells, blood vessel cells infected with hantaviruses also make IL-6, Klingström and colleagues found. In the case of Andes virus, increased levels of IL-6 in the blood were associated with more severe disease, Klingström and colleagues reported in 2019 in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
IL-6 is a messenger molecule that signals immune cells to fight viruses, but it can also trigger damaging inflammation. Which pathway IL-6 uses to deliver its message determines whether capillaries will leak, Klingström and colleagues reported in 2025 in PLOS Pathogens. Some drugs already in clinical trials may block a harmful delivery pathway, which could stop capillary leaks, he says.
Vial and colleagues have also experimented with a drug called icatibant that blocks bradykinin. The drug is already approved to treat a rare genetic condition called hereditary angioedema, in which people develop spontaneous swelling in their face, hands and other parts of the body, and it has helped a woman with severe Puumala virus infection recover quickly. But large clinical trials are needed to establish whether the drug is an effective treatment.
Ultimately, combinations of drugs may keep people from drowning in their own fluids, Klingström says. New treatments won’t come soon enough for those affected by the cruise ship outbreak, but he is hopeful that attention to the outbreak will spur research that might benefit the more than 10,000 people estimated to be infected with hantaviruses worldwide each year. “It should be possible to design treatments that could rather quickly reverse it,” he says, “and hopefully rather quickly save patients from this life-threatening condition.”

Not every parent looks forward to the day when their child goes off to school. In fact some parents are not sending their students to school at all. Instead they are choosing to teach their children at home. This is called homeschooling. Parents, caregivers, or private tutors educate children individually at home instead of sending them off to be formally educated in public or private schools. In the U.S. only about three percent of children are homeschooled.
There are many reasons why some parents choose to homeschool. One reason is that some parents do not feel their children are safe in school because of bullying and a growing trend of police in school. Other parents want their child's education to be based on their religion or moral beliefs. Yet other parents feel like the education in school is not good enough. Homeschooling is also seen as a choice for families that live in rural areas, and families that travel, like actors.
There are many different ways to homeschool, and homeschooling allows parents to customize lessons based on their children's needs. Families can purchase textbooks to use or create their own materials. Some parents follow a philosophy called unschooling, which allows a child to determine when, and how they want to learn based on their natural curiosity. Some worry that homeschooling means students won't have opportunities to socialize. To answer this concern, some families have created cooperatives, where a group of homeschooled students will learn and play together and participate in activities that would normally happen in school like field trips and prom.
Being homeschooled doesn't mean a student cannot go to college. Most colleges accept homeschooled students. It is important, however, for parents and students to create a portfolio or proof of what has been learned.

"You have 365 days."
That was the deal Trang Phap's parents made with her after she graduated from the University Lumiere Lyon 2 in France in 2011.
Only one year to prove that music, which they had always called "just a hobby", could be something more.
After that, she would go back to pursuing a master's degree in economics in Brussels, where her parents live, and then follow an established career path.
For years, every time the deadline approached, she would call them and ask for another 365 days, like applying for a visa to stay in her own dream.
But it wasn't until 2023, when the Vietnamese adaptation of the Chinese music reality show Ride the Wind — which brings together female celebrities aged over 30 to perform in groups and win votes — called Chi Dep, reached out to her, that she finally stopped having to renew that visa.
The first season of Chi Dep was a hit in Vietnam. After airing on VTV3, it ranked first in its time slot among variety shows and set a record for the most sponsors — 33 in total — in Vietnamese television variety show history. Phap claimed the winner's title, which earned her a spot in the five-girl pop group Lunas.
"The first season was very impactful. I felt like Chi Dep was something completely new in Vietnam," says Phap, adding that the show appeals to viewers of all ages, from grandparents to young children.
That audience includes her own parents, a professor and a diplomat living in Europe. "When they watched the show, they could actually see what I do every day, how I work to make a performance, write songs, and work with the sisters. They could see the friendships in the field.
"The show actually helped me bridge the generational gap between my parents and me by showing how show business works and how the music industry operates," Phap says.
(From left) Uygur host Vinina Ahmet, Vietnamese singer Trang Phap and Taiwan Phap started playing the piano at 6 and tried her hand at writing some melodies on her keyboard at 9. At that time she had to leave Vietnam, where she had grown up, leaving all her childhood friends on a Christmas night.
"Writing songs was something so natural for me, something that always helped me deal with my emotions."
After graduating from university, instead of following her parents' wishes to continue studying economics, she chose to return alone to Ho Chi Minh City, where she broke into the music industry as a soloist.
After five years of negotiations with her parents, both sides made concessions. She could stay in the industry, but not as a singer on stage — instead, as a behind-the-scenes songwriter, which in her parents' view offered a safer work environment and a healthier lifestyle.
So from 2017 until 2023, when she received the invitation from Chi Dep, she was in the studio writing songs for movies or for other artists.
"I think the invitation was a sign from the universe in some way, because I wanted to go back on stage. I wanted to perform for people, I wanted to sing my songs for the audience, and I said yes right away," she recalls.
"There was never a show where we had 30-plus artists come together, a show that sends a message about strong women, sisterhood, and women collaborating to work toward the same goal. It's actually very inspiring for people."
Recently, she appeared as the only Vietnamese singer on Ride the Wind 2026, debuting with a powerful 90-second performance that combined multilingual singing, piano playing and dancing.
Growing up, she listened to Jay Chou's songs and says he is the Chinese artist who has influenced her the most.
She also expresses hope that one day she will have the chance to collaborate, write or sing a Chinese-Vietnamese song, to make even the smallest contribution to the cultural exchange between the two countries.
"I feel like music and art in general have no borders. It's a universal language. If we can use that to connect people, connect families, connect people from different nations — that's a beautiful thing. That's something I will try hard to do."
She started with 365 days. Now, she has a lifetime to pursue her passion.

In the ancient fishing village of Xunpu on the coast of Quanzhou, Fujian province, flowers don't just sprout in local gardens, but also atop the heads of the local women, nearly all of whom are crowned by colorful floral wreaths.
It is a daily practice that has continued for centuries.
In narrow stone alleys, the sound of knives shucking oysters can be heard, as grandmothers with thinning silver hair work while wearing wreaths of seasonal blooms.
This ancient art, called zanhua, transforms the grit of their laborious task into a display of grace and color.
Xunpu sits at the heart of the ancient Quanzhou port, serving as a microcosm of Maritime Silk Road culture.
On May 6, zanhua, or wearing flower hairpins, was showcased at a cultural event in Morocco to mark the 680th anniversary of the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta's visit to Quanzhou.
Many believe that during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), seafaring traders passing through the port brought exotic flower species to local women. An old local opera lyric also depicts the tradition: "In the fourth month, the floral crown is worn; it is heavy on both sides."
The first phrase describes how Xunpu women string seasonal flowers — Arabian jasmine, magnolia and the like — into a garland and encircle it around their coiled hair buns. The second depicts the headdress' shape: a hairpin, traditionally made of fishbone or ivory — or even a chopstick — is fixed horizontally through the bun, while clusters of blossoms sit heavily and abundantly on both sides.
The tradition is entwined with the worship of Mazu, the sea goddess. Fisherwomen believe in Mazu, who sacrificed herself to save others. Out of reverence, they wear fresh flowers when visiting her temple to seek blessings.
Today, fisherwomen continue to adorn themselves before facing the rigor of their work, carrying on a practice that, like the flowers themselves, continues to blossom.
And not just in Quanzhou.
Zanhua went viral in 2023 after actress Zhao Liying did a photoshoot in Xunpu attire, which garnered millions of views on social media, and later sparked a trend among celebrities, like Maye Musk, mother of Elon Musk, who donned the headdress during a visit to China in 2024.
These unique practices, together with local women's clothing and accessories, were collectively enshrined as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008. Even groups of male visitors to the village now appear wearing traditional Chinese attire capped off with zanhua.
However, fresh flowers have sometimes been difficult to obtain.
"Women often wear silk flowers," said Huang Liyong, who runs a Zanhua studio near the local temple of the sea goddess.
"In earlier times, they even used paper, or white garlic skins, to create the floral shapes."
Huang, 37, who was raised in Xunpu, has never seen her mother with short hair.
To work while keeping her hair tidy, her mother coiled it up and adorned it with flowers.
She also recalled a childhood of mending nets and shucking oysters learned from her grandmother, as well as carrying buckets of water to keep the seafood brought home by her parents fresh.
"With flowers in our hair, we feel no bitterness, no matter the hardship," Huang said.
As a local saying goes: "Wear flowers in this life, stay beautiful in every life."
As an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage, Huang has taken that beauty to nearly twenty countries. "Even when there is a language barrier, foreigners get excited to see the flowers. The pursuit of beauty is universal."
Huong Ly, a content creator from Vietnam, visited the village in April and filmed a video of her wearing the floral headdress. "It is so interesting. In Vietnam, it is very trendy, and I always wanted to come and try it myself," she said.
Georgia Tattersall from New Zealand, a student at Xiamen University, performed a dance wearing zanhua during an April campus event. Despite the nerves, she felt a sense of "beauty and courage" once she was adorned with flowers.
The experience, she said, helped her understand the spirit of the local fisherwomen who wear flowers while they work.

Tuan Pham was feeling pretty good about himself as he approached the 12-mile mark of the Long Beach Half Marathon in Southern California. The run on Oct. 15, 2023, was the 47-year-old’s seventh such event, and he couldn’t wait to celebrate at the finish line with his teenage son, who had raced ahead. Pham took another step or two, and that was the last thing he remembers. He can’t recall staggering or falling face-first to the ground, where he lay motionless as runners skirted him. He had no pulse, nor was he breathing. Three blocked arteries had conspired to do him in. He was clinically dead. If he didn’t get help soon, he’d be officially dead. The American Heart Association says the odds of surviving a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital are less than 12%. Pham’s only chance of survival was if someone, say, a cardiologist, happened to pass by. Well … Just as Pham hit the ground, Ryan Chiu, a cardiothoracic surgeon from MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center, was leaving a restaurant a few feet away. Dr. Chiu immediately recognized what was happening. He ran to Pham’s side and began chest compressions. He enlisted the help of a bystander, who took over on compressions while Dr. Chiu called his hospital and told them to prepare an operating room and gather a surgical team, stat. They had an emergency on their hands. Minutes later, an ambulance arrived. Medics scooped up Pham and sped him away to the hospital, with Dr. Chiu following in his own car. The triple bypass surgery that Dr. Chiu performed was a success, and Pham is alive and well—well enough to return to the route of the Long Beach Half Marathon and pick up where he left off. “I’m that guy,” he told the Long Beach Post. “I’m going back and finishing the last 2 miles.” Pham likely wouldn’t have had that opportunity if providence hadn’t stepped in. After brunch, Dr. Chiu’s friend asked him to linger a few minutes so they could take in the ocean view. If Dr. Chiu had left the restaurant when he’d intended, he would never have witnessed Pham falling. “I can’t believe the one guy, the first guy, to see me fall, to show up and give me help, was a cardiac surgeon,” Pham told the Post. “What are the odds?”
