“Michael, come on! Let’s get going!” my older sister Rose shouted.
“I’m coming!”
The yearly Mini Marathon (马拉松) was Dad and Rose’s tradition. Although I didn’t like exercising, I agreed to join them this year, for my dad promised I could wear his favorite smart watch.
We got to the race. Soon the race started. Rose and Dad were off with the crowd (人群), but I decided to run on my own. After the first mile, I felt surprisingly less tired than I thought. Maybe I was meant to be a runner—maybe I’d even beat my sister!
After the first mile and a half, my leg started to cramp up and I couldn’t take one step farther. I walked to the side of the road with difficulty. “Michael!” someone called out. It was Josh, one of Rose’s teammates on the track team. “Are you okay?” he asked.
“I’m okay. Just cramping up, no big deal.”
“Sometimes the best way to deal with it is just to keep moving. Let’s go together.”
“You are so nice to stop and help.” I said.
“Don’t mention it, buddy. We leave no teammate behind.”
As we walked, we saw the sign pass for two miles. Okay, over halfway there. Then I started to run again. I felt it was difficult and uncomfortable.
Suddenly, I heard someone call out my name. It was Rose.
“I didn’t see you just now. What happened?” Rose asked.
“Little man is all good—just some cramps,” Josh added.
I was so embarrassed (尴尬的). “Yeah, I guess I wasn’t as ready as I thought, because, well, I didn’t really train.”
“No wonder! You’ve got to build up to this!” she said. “How are you feeling now?”
“Better. Rose, you shouldn’t have stopped for me—your time is going to be terrible now!”
“You’re my little brother, and I don’t want you to get injured. Let’s train together next time. Training is easier when someone is by your side.”
“Yeah. Thanks, Rose.”
She smiled. “Let’s finish this race together.”
“Alright, let’s go!”

The Yellow River, known as China’s “Mother River”, is not that yellow in recent years. As China’s second-longest river, it has long been troubled by pollution and too much sand. However, thanks to environmental protection efforts, its water quality has improved greatly. In 2022, for the first time, the main part of the Yellow River reached Class II water quality. This means the water is clean enough for drinking after proper treatment. This high standard has been kept for years.
Numbers show great progress. Since 2018, the percentage of clean water (Class I-III) across the whole river area has gone up from 66.4% to over 90%. At the same time, the dirtiest water (below Class V), which was not fit for any use, is no longer seen. On average, the rate of good water in the area continues to go up every year. These amazing results show the environment of the Yellow River is getting better and better.
This great change did not come easily. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the river faced serious environmental problems. Factory waste, agricultural pollution and household wastewater made the river dirty. Many local fish died out, and the water became unsafe to drink, putting millions of people living along the river in danger.
To save the “Mother River”, our government took many useful steps. Over 17,000 polluted outlets (排污口) were strictly controlled. The Yellow River Protection Law came into effect in 2023, offering the river long-term support. Besides, large projects to stop soil loss were carried out on the Loess Plateau (黄土高原), and water projects like the Xiaolangdi Dam helped reduce sand in the water.
Today, the Yellow River is lively again. Endangered fish have appeared in its waters again, and rare birds like whooper swans now spend winter in the Sanmenxia Reservoir. The “Mother River”, once polluted, is now clear and healthy, bringing hope back to the land and people who depend on it.
The changes to the Yellow River
Improvement in water quality
The water in the Yellow River now has much ____51____ quality.
The water is clean enough after it is properly ____52____.
Progress in water quality numbers
The percentage of clean water (Class I-III) along the whole river has ____53____ by 23.6%
The dirtiest water has already disappeared ____54____.
The rate of the clean water along the river keeps going up.

Local fish disappeared.
People living along the river ____56____ losing their lives.

Polluted outlets into the river were under ____57____.
The law about protecting the Yellow River came into effect.
Large projects were carried out to keep soil from being ____58____.
New look of the river

Light rain continued to fall as I arrived at the mountain village. With a heavy bag on my back, I was excited to teach at a small school here, but a little ____11____. What would these students be like?
The school had only 18 students. Most were quiet, ____12____ they ran and laughed at break. One girl, Wen, always sat alone in the corner, seldom saying anything. On my first day in the classroom, I shared with them a ____13____ with the words “You are seen” on it and put it up on the wall. Some smiled shyly and some spoke quietly. “That’s why I’m here,” I said. However, Wen didn’t ____14____. She was just drawing circles on the desk with her finger.
Days passed quickly. The lessons were ____15____ planned. The children were kind. But my effort seemed to make little difference. I was not sure if I was doing anything ____16____.
One night, a heavy storm caused a power cut, leaving the classroom in darkness. As everyone was frozen, a soft light appeared. It was Wen who was holding a ____17____ in her hand. “We can still read,” she said in a low voice. That was the first time I heard her voice.
The next day, she sat ____18____ to her classmates. In the following days, she began to talk more. In my last class, she came up and gave me the lantern. “So you will always have some ____19____,” she smiled gently.
I came to give light, but found it was quietly ____20____. Volunteering isn’t always loud or big. Sometimes, it’s a quiet lantern—shared between the two, and shining in both directions.

11. C 12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B 16. D 17. B 18. C 19. C 20. A
后文作者疑惑“What would these students be like?”
so“因此”表因果,since“自从”表时间或原因,when“当……时候”表示时间,均不合逻辑。
【13题详解】
句意:在教室的第一天,我和他们分享了一张上面写着“你们被看见了”的海报,并把它贴在墙上。
能贴在墙上展示话语的通常是海报,应填poster。dictionary“字典”、book“书”和timetable“时间表”一般不贴在墙上展示标语。
【14题详解】
句意:然而,温没有抬头看。
后文“She was just drawing circles on the desk with her finger.” stand up“站起来”、give up“放弃”和wake up“醒来”与语境动作不符。
前文提到“But my effort seemed to make little difference. ”,因此作者怀疑自己做的事是否有意义,应填meaningful。simple“简单的”、interesting“有趣的”和popular“受欢迎的”不符合此时自我怀疑的语境。
【17题详解】
句意:是温,她手里拿着一盏灯笼。
后文明确说到“she came up and gave me the lantern.”,此处对应下文,应填lantern。
根据后文“she began to talk more.”,此处表示她开始交流,说明心理距离拉近,坐得更近,应填closer。

文章第一自然段“its water quality has improved greatly。” 因此第一空填better/improved都可以。
文章第一自然段“This means the water is clean enough for drinking after proper treatment。”
文章第二自然段“Since 2018, the percentage of clean water (Class I-III) across the whole river area has gone up from 66.4% to over 90%”。 且题干要求每空一词,此处用gone up的同义词increased/risen代替gone up。所以第三空应填increased/risen。
文章第二自然段“At the same time, the dirtiest water (below Class V), which was not fit for any use, is no longer seen”。“is no longer seen”表示“已经消失不见了”,题目里需用一个副词修饰动词disappeared,completely(完全地)最贴合,也可以填forever(永远消失),所以第四空应填completely/forever。
【55题详解】
此题题干是标题以及后面表格内容“In the 1990s and early 2000s, three kinds of waste caused bad results”可知,此处需要填表示过去时间的短语,固定短语in the past“在过去”符合题意,所以第四空应填past。
题目句子是“People living along the river ______ losing their lives”,后面接的是动名词losing,表示面临失去生命的风险。“risk doing sth”表示“冒……的危险”,原文是过去时态,所以第六空应填risked。
【57题详解】
原文第四自然段“Over 17,000 polluted outlets were strictly controlled”,句中短语strictly controlled被严格管控,题目里用under+名词的结构,固定搭配under control表示 “处于管控中”,贴合原文。
原文第四自然段“large projects to stop soil loss were carried out on the Loess Plateau” ,其中“stop soil loss”意为“防止水土流失”,也就是 “防止土壤被流失 ”,题干being + 过去分词构成被动语态,lost表示流失,符合题意,所以第八空应填lost。
原文第五自然段“Endangered fish have appeared in its waters again”,其中“have appeared again”意为“重新出现”,固定短语return to+地点表示返回某地,题目里需要用have+动词过去分词,所以第九空应填returned。
原文第五自然段“bringing hope back to the land and people who depend on it”。 所以第十空应填hopeful/lively 。
