For many older adults, the simple joy of a bike ride feels out of reach.Cycling Without Age bridges that gap,
pairing seniors with younger volunteers. These young people are called "pilots."They ride alongside seniors,
ensuring every journey is safe, joyful, and shared.
Take Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence for example.Despite the 20 years'gap in age, they have been
riding together for years.56-year-old Lawrence pilots the trishaw (while Lyon enjoys the ride.
Every week, the two explore their town.Lyon would ask about its streets and history, while Lawrence was
happy to share what he knew."This program has brought me a meaningful connection with an older
generation, which means a lot to me since my parents are no longer with me,"Lawrence says.
That same spirit inspires John Boettner, who leads a local Cycling Without Age chapter in Santa Barbara.
He has one gentle rule for his passengers."People always ask.'How much does a ride cost?""he says."I tell
them.'Just smile and wave to everyone we pass.""Boettner cherishes red lights, because they are little
windows for connection,a chance for his passengers to exchange smiles and stories with strangers on the
street."Driving the trishaw is our best advertisement,"he adds."When a 101-year-old woman holds your
hand tight and says thank you,it's a moment you'll never forget."
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age,sees these moments as part of something greater.
"What makes these rides so powerful is how riding softens the lines between generations and helps people
form new friendships,"he says."I believe that friendship,or the ability to open your heart and care for others
at any age, brings energy and warmth to life, making it richer and better."
4.What was Lawrence's greatest gain from Cycling Without Age?
A.A clear goal.
B.A brave heart.
C.A curious mind.
D.A treasured bond
5.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Riders are enriched by giving rides.
B.The program needs to be advertised.
C.Passengers have to pay for the rides
D.Red lights teach people patience and care.
6.What does Ole Kassow emphasize in his words?
A.The pleasure of cycling.
B.The value of the program.
C.The power of young people.
D.The definition of a good life.
7.Which of the following best matches the idea in the passage?
A.A sweet friendship comes from trust.
B.A heart that connects is always young.
C.Don't go through life, grow through life.
D.Happiness is a journey,not a destination.

In America,we have a thing called stand-up comedy. This popular form of entertainment consists of a
comedian standing up at the front of a club, holding a microphone, and telling jokes.Of course, comedy is
popular in Chinese culture as well, but the performances are quite different from the style in the US.In China,
it's called cross-talk,which usually involves two guys engaging in an entertaining dialogue.
It's believed that cross-talk came into being in the Qing Dynasty as a bit of a by-product of the imitation
shows that were a popular form of entertainment in the Song Dynasty. After the PRC was established in 1949.
this comedic art became more and more popular.Today,it's still heavily featured in the CCTV New Year's
Gala programmes in China. The 1990s was the golden age of cross-talk:even foreigners studied the art of
cross-talk.Mark Roswell,a Canadian named Da Shan in Chinese was relatively unknown in his native land
but was a superstar in China. At the turn of the century,cross-talk began to decline, and many well-known
actors left the stage.
There are four skills that are essential in cross-talk:speaking,imitating,teasing,and singing. Most of
the time,it is performed with two actors-one serves as the lead actor while the other plays a support role.
However, sometimes it is performed simply as a one-man show, and at other times there are several actors.
In order to criticize something, the humor involved in cross-talk is satirical.
8.What's the difference between American stand-up comedy and Chinese cross-talk?
A.Chinese cross-talk actors don't use a microphone.
B.American stand-up comedy actors are all men.
C.Chinese cross-talk is more liked by Canadians.
D.American stand-up comedy is only a one-man show.
9.Which word can best summarize Paragraph 2?
A.History.
B.Future
C.Features.
D.Difference
10.What can we know about Mark Roswell?
A.He was an American stand-up comedian.
B.He was very popular with Canadians.
C.He was a famous cross-talker in China.
D.He left the stage in the early 1990s
11.What's the meaning of the underlined word "satirical"in Paragraph 3?
A.Acid-tongued.
B.Good-tempered.
C.Warm-hearted.
D.Smooth-tongued.
When geneticist Elizabeth Clare placed 70 small filters around England's Hamerton Zoo Park last
year, she intended for the traps to collect DNA from the sky. What she didn't know, however, was that led by
Kristine Bohmann, another team was conducting a similar experiment in the Copenhagen Zoo.
Wild animals are usually studied indirectly through clues that they leave behind, like fur, feathers or
waste. That means certain animals-especially the small, fast and shy ones-are often missed in traditional
wildlife surveys.Because all living organisms shed DNA into the air of the environment they live in,the two
research groups hoped they could use those genetic traces, called eDNA,to find out what animals frequent
an area
One of the biggest challenges of working with airborne eDNA is avoiding contamination (from
other sources, which could muddle (results."The zoo becomes this perfect environment where we
know everything that we're detecting has only one possible source,"says Clare."My lab doesn't handle tiger
DNA ever,so if we're detecting a tiger, there is no other source."
To see if eDNA could be detected in the air, both teams placed filters in different zoo enclosures,
including both indoor and outdoor exhibits.Bohmann's group collected 40 air samples in three locations
around the Copenhagen Zoo.They also tested three different air sampling devices.Clare's group took a
similar approach but instead used just one type of air pump.
Though both groups were optimistic that their idea could work, they were still shocked at their results
In the 40 samples that Bohmann's group collected, they successfully found 49 species including mammals,
birds, reptiles and fish."We had no idea that this would actually work so well,"says Bohmann.Clare's team
also identified DNA from more than two dozen different species of animals from their samples, including
tigers,lemurs and dingoes.
"It's really exciting looking at how both of these papers have produced the same results,"says Mark
Johnson, who studies eDNA at Texas Tech University. While hopeful about the future of airborne eDNA,
Johnson notes huge leaps need to be made before the techniques used in the zoo can be applied in the field.
Collecting eDNA in the wild adds a host of new variables."The next step is to take it from the zoo into the
natural environment and see what we find there,"says Johnson.
12.What did the two teams of scientists try to do?
A.To study zoo animals'DNA in detail.
B.To detect animals from DNA in the air.
C.To improve zoo environments for animals.
D.To compare DNAs of different zoo animals.
13.Why did the scientists choose the zoo for their study?
A.Because the air there was much cleaner.
B.Because there were many useful resources in it.
C.Because they expected to find a tiger DNA there.
D.Because it could ensure the accuracy of the results.
14.What can we learn about the two groups'findings?
A.They needed to be further proved.
B.They depended greatly on the devices
C.They were far beyond the scientists'expectations.
D.They failed to support the scientists'idea about eDNA.
15.What's Mark Johnson's attitude towards the future of eDNA?
A.Cautiously optimistic.
B.Mildly doubtful.
C.Somewhat opposed.
D.Completely supportive.
Music Education and Its Impact on Students'Learning
Music education can greatly help students learn.Research from the University of California shows that
students with musical training score about 20%higher in language and math tests. It is not just an art form
but a powerful educational tool.16.Here are some of the key way it impacts students'academic
and thinking abilities.
Language Skill Development
Learning songs like You Are My Sunshine exposes students to vocabulary beyond textbooks.Words like
"sunshine"and "dear"are naturally acquired through repetitive melodies, which strengthen pronunciation
and grammar awareness.17.
For example,Some pop songs introduce modern slang (like
"self-made"and"daydream",while classical lyrics (teach formal expressions. This linguistic diversity
strengthens communication abilities.
Memory Improvement
18.
Have you ever suddenly recalled forgotten songs from childhood?Scientists call this the
"melodic memory effect".Catchy melodies (activate the brain's hippocampus-the key memory
center.Educational songs like the ABC song use beats to make facts unforgettable. When preparing
performances, students memorize rhythms and volume changes-skill transferable to studying history or
math.
Mental Power Increase
Music works both sides of the brain.19.
When you play the piano, for example, the left
brain works on reading musical notes (logic),while the right brain focuses on expressing emotions
(creativity).Additionally, reading music trains pattern recognition-a skill used in solving math problems.
Group performances also teach teamwork and quick thinking.
In conclusion, music education plays a vital role in learning. It supports academic growth and thinking
skills.20.
A.But how exactly does it improve learning?
B.Group singing reduces classroom participation.
C.It provides rich language input through varied songs.
D.A common experience reveals music's memory power.
E.Music theory classes improve mathematical reasoning.
F.Brain research shows it uses the entire brain effectively
G.Such a combined method makes learning effective and enjoyable.

If I hadn't been a struggling violinist,I might have never become a writer.In fourth grade,my school
had an orchestra program, and I eagerly signed up to learn the violin.I loved the idea of being in the
orchestra and went to the music lessons every week.
The orchestra teacher,Mr.Black, was strict. He told us that if we damaged our instruments,we'd be
kicked out of the program because the school couldn't afford the expensive pieces of the instrument.
Unfortunately,I wasn't very good at the violin. One day, while practicing, the bridge of my violin flew off
and the strings broke.
Scared of Mr.Black's reaction,I tried to fix it myself with some glue. But when he saw my crooked
bridge,he told me I couldn't be in the orchestra anymore.Instead,he suggested I join the singing club
I did switch to the chorus club, where I stayed, thinking I had found my place.I enjoyed singing with
others, even though I didn't have a great voice. And as luck would have it,the elementary school sing club
automatically fed into the junior high chorus. We had lots of chances to give performances.Instead of a
violinist,I became a singer in an orchestra.Don't be confused. My singing was not outstanding, but in the
midst of so many others,I could blend(融合).
One Monday after a big performance,my English teacher Ms.Rose asked if anyone was interested in

She handed me a notebook and asked me to write down my thoughts and feelings about the performance.I
was thrilled. That night,I poured my heart into the article, describing how I had felt nervous before the
performance but how singing with my friends had made me feel brave and alive. When I finished,I realized
that I had enjoyed writing more than I had ever enjoyed singing. The next day,I handed in the article, and Ms.
Rose told me that it was excellent and that she would publish it.
Paragraph 2.The following year I became the editor of the school newspaper, considering that I had
found my calling.I loved every minute of it,from interviewing students and teachers to editing articles and
designing layouts.I discovered that I had a talent for words and a passion for storytelling.Mr.Black,who
had once told me I couldn't play the violin, even came to one of my newspaper's events and praised my work.
I realized that sometimes, when one door closes, another opens, and it's up to us to walk through it and find
our true path.
