Daniel had never been good at sports. When the school decided that every student must run in the yearly cross-country race, his heart sank. He was sure that he would come last, and the thought of everyone watching him made him want to hide. He had always believed that he was simply not the sporty type.
For weeks before the race, however, Daniel did something no one expected. Early each morning, while the streets were still quiet, he put on his old shoes and went out to run. At first he could manage only a few hundred metres before stopping, out of breath. But he refused to give up, and little by little he ran a little farther each day.
On the day of the race, Daniel's legs felt heavy with fear. As the others rushed ahead, he soon fell to the back, just as he had feared. His chest burned and his feet hurt, and more than once he thought about walking off the track. Yet each time, he remembered all those early mornings, and he forced himself to keep going. One step at a time, he told himself, just like every quiet morning.
When Daniel finally crossed the finish line, he was indeed the last runner. But to his surprise, his classmates were waiting for him, cheering louder than they had for anyone else. They had seen how hard he had tried, and that, they told him, was braver than coming first. For the first time, Daniel did not mind being last at all.
That race taught Daniel something he never forgot. Winning, he realised, is not always about being faster than others. Sometimes it simply means refusing to quit, even when the whole world expects you to.
24. How did Daniel feel when he heard about the race?
A. Excited and rather proud.
B. Calm and very confident.
C. Angry and quite bored.
D. Worried and unwilling.

25. What did Daniel do before the race?
A. He trained early every morning.
B. He asked to skip the race.
C. He bought new running shoes.
D. He watched others practising.
故选A。
26. Why did his classmates cheer the loudest for him?
A. Because he won the whole race easily.
B. Because they saw how hard he tried.
C. Because he ran the fastest of all.
D. Because he made everyone laugh hard.
27. What did Daniel learn from the race?
A. Sports are really a waste of time.
B. Winning is the only thing that matters.

March 2026 — A group of students at Comstock Park have found a new way to spend their free time: helping the people around them. What began last year as a small idea among a few friends has grown into a busy volunteer club with more than sixty members. Their story has since been shared online and praised by people across the city.
Every week, the students split into teams and head out into their community. Some visit a local home for the elderly, where they chat with the residents, play simple games and listen to their stories. Others work in a community garden, where they water plants and grow fresh vegetables that are later given to families in need. On weekends, a few of them also help younger children with their reading at the public library.
"At first we were a little shy," said Mia, one of the club's founders. "But once you see how happy a short visit can make someone, you just want to do more." Teachers say the club has changed the students as much as it has helped others, making them more confident and more aware of the world beyond their books. Several parents have written to the school to say how proud they are.
The idea is now catching on at nearby schools, where students have started clubs of their own. Organisers hope that, in time, hundreds of young people across the city will take part. The school is now planning to give the club a small budget to support its work. As Mia put it, "You do not have to be rich or grown-up to make a difference. You just have to start."

29. What does the underlined phrase "catching on" probably mean?
A. Becoming popular.
B. Falling apart.
C. Slowing down.

【答案】A 【解析】根据划线词处“The idea is now catching on at nearby schools, where students have started clubs of their own”可知,这一做法正“流行开来、受到效仿”,故 catching on 意为“流行、受欢迎”。 故选A。
30. What does Mia think about making a difference?

B. Anyone can help if they start.

Why do some students give up the moment a subject gets hard, while others keep trying until they succeed? Psychologists believe the answer often lies in something called our mindset — the way we think about our own abilities. This simple idea, studied by psychologists for decades, can shape how far we go.
People with a "fixed mindset" believe that intelligence and talent are something you are simply born with. To them, if you have to work hard at something, it must mean you are not good at it. So when they meet a difficult problem, they quickly feel that there is no point in trying.
People with a "growth mindset", on the other hand, believe that abilities can be developed through effort and practice. They see a hard task not as a sign of failure, but as a chance to learn and improve. A low mark, to them, is not the end of the story, but a message about what to work on next. Such students are not afraid of challenges; in fact, they often welcome them.
The good news is that a mindset is not fixed forever; it can be changed. Praising effort rather than cleverness, treating mistakes as a normal part of learning, and adding the word "yet" — saying "I can't do this yet" instead of "I can't do this" — can all help a growth mindset take root.
This simple idea matters more than it may seem. Students who believe they can grow tend to work harder, bounce back from setbacks, and achieve more in the long run. How we think about our minds, it turns out, can quietly shape what those minds are able to do. In the end, believing in growth may be the first step towards real success.
32. What does the word "mindset" refer to?
A. The marks we get in our exams.
B. The talents that we are born with.
C. The subjects we study at school.
D. The way we think about our abilities.
【答案】D 【解析】根据第一段“mindset — the way we think about our own abilities”可知,思维模式指我们看待自身能力的方式。
33. How do people with a fixed mindset see a hard task?
A. As a sign that they lack talent.
B. As a fun chance to learn more.
C. As a normal part of school life.
D. As a problem for their teachers.
【答案】A 【解析】根据第二段“if you have to work hard at something, it must mean you are not good at it”可知,固定型思维者把难题看作“自己不擅长”的信号。 故选A。
34. Which of the following shows a growth mindset?
A. Giving up after a low mark.
B. Saying "I can't do this yet."
C. Believing talent cannot change.
D. Praising only clever students.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Talent matters far more than effort.
B. Exam marks decide our whole future.
C. Believing we can grow helps us a lot.
D. Some people can never really improve.
Feeling nervous before a test is completely normal. Even top students get butterflies in their stomachs. ___36___ The good news is that there are simple ways to stay calm and do your best. Learning to manage these nerves is a skill that will help you for years to come.
Prepare early instead of cramming. ___37___ When you have studied steadily over weeks, you walk into the exam room feeling ready, not panicked. Last-minute cramming, by contrast, often leaves you tired and more worried than before. Knowledge that has settled in over weeks is much harder to forget.
___38___ On the night before the test, put away your books at a sensible hour and get a good sleep. A rested mind remembers more and thinks more clearly than a tired one that has stayed up all night.
Breathe slowly when worry strikes. ___39___ Taking a few deep, slow breaths tells your body that there is no danger, and your racing heart begins to settle. This simple trick can be used quietly even during the exam itself.
Finally, keep things in perspective. ___40___ One test does not decide your whole future, and worrying too much only makes it harder to think. Do your best, and then let it go. A calm, balanced attitude will serve you far better than fear ever could.
A. Good sleep matters more than one more hour of study.
B. The more you worry, the better you will do.
C. The problem is not the nerves themselves, but how we handle them.
D. Remember that a single exam is not the end of the world.
E. Studying all night is the safest way to pass.
F. Steady study is the best cure for exam nerves.
G. A calm body helps to create a calm mind.
C 项“The problem is not the nerves themselves, but how we handle them.”
F 项“Steady study is the best cure for exam nerves.”
A 项“Good sleep matters more than one more hour of study.”
G 项“A calm body helps to create a calm mind.”
D 项“Remember that a single exam is not the end of the world.”
【干扰项】B、E 两项似是而非:B 项“The more you worry, the better you will do.”与全文“减轻紧张”的主张相悖;E 项“Studying all night is the safest way to pass.”

It was supposed to be the best day of our school trip. Our class had set off early to hike up Green Hill, laughing and chatting as we climbed through the bright morning sunshine. By noon we had almost reached the top, proud of how far we had come. The view from the slope was lovely, and nothing seemed to worry us.
Then, without warning, the weather changed. A thick grey fog rolled in from the valley, and within minutes we could barely see the classmate walking just ahead. The cheerful voices died away, and a worried silence fell over the group. Some of us had no idea which way led back down the hill. What had felt like an easy, happy walk now seemed strange and a little frightening. Some students quietly reached out to hold the hands of those beside them.
Our teacher, Mr. Wang, told everyone to stop and stay exactly where they were. "Nobody moves alone," he said firmly. A few students looked frightened, and one girl began to cry softly. The path we had walked up so happily had completely disappeared into the white mist around us. For a few long moments, nobody knew quite what to do, and the cold air pressed in around us. We all turned to look at one another, each hoping someone would be brave enough to speak first. Mr. Wang's calm voice was the only steady thing in the swirling fog.
Possible Version(约180词)
Taking a deep breath, we calmed down and tried to think of a way out. Mr. Wang first counted us carefully to make sure no one was missing. Then he asked us to hold hands and form a long line, so that nobody would be left behind in the fog. Step by step, we followed him slowly back along the path, using a compass and the marks we had left on the way up. Whenever someone felt afraid, the rest of us spoke up to encourage them, and little by little our fear turned into quiet courage.
At last, the fog began to thin, and we walked safely out of the hill. As the familiar gate of our camp appeared through the mist, a cheer broke out among us, and even the girl who had cried was smiling again. Mr. Wang looked at us with relief and pride, telling us how well we had stayed calm and worked together. Looking back, we all agreed that the hill had taught us something no classroom could: that when people stay calm and help one another, no fog is too thick to come through.

C. Refusing to give up is a real win.
D. It is best to avoid hard things now.

28. What do the students do at the home for the elderly?
A. Cook meals for families in need.
B. Grow vegetables in a community garden.
C. Teach lessons to younger children.
D. Chat and play games with old people.
29. What does the underlined phrase "catching on" probably mean?
A. Becoming popular.
B. Falling apart.
C. Slowing down.
D. Being banned.
30. What does Mia think about making a difference?
A. Only adults can really help.
B. Anyone can help if they start.
C. Helping needs a lot of money.
D. It is too hard for students.
31. What is the news report mainly about?
A. A new garden built by the school.
B. A home that cares for old people.
C. Students helping people in their town.
D. A city plan to build more schools.
D
33. How do people with a fixed mindset see a hard task?
A. As a sign that they lack talent.
B. As a fun chance to learn more.
C. As a normal part of school life.
D. As a problem for their teachers.

Taking a deep breath, we calmed down and tried to think of a way out.
At last, the fog began to thin, and we walked safely out of the hill.
