Jon Pedley is making a big change. He is giving up his life as a businessman for a life of helping others. He is trading his beautiful farmhouse in England for life in a mud hut (小屋) in Uganda, East Africa.
Pedley admitted that he had not always led a very positive life. At times he drank too much and got in trouble with the law. “I had always put the pursuit of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn’t care who I was hurting,” says Pedley.
But a visit to Uganda in 2007 gave Pedley a new outlook on life. He was amazed at what he saw and how much the people there appreciated the work he was doing. “I worked there for a few days and these people who have nothing were thanking me by giving me bags of potatoes, which are a fortune for them,” he said. Now Pedley is selling his business, his $1.5 million farmhouse, and his expensive car—and moving into a hut made of mud and boards in a small Ugandan village. There he will help run an organisation that hopes to improve the quality of life for people in the village of Kigazi. He will help to build schoolrooms for children and tanks to hold clean water for villagers. Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.
Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a “camp” in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities for kids in Kigazi, many of whom have lost their parents to poverty or disease. Pedley hopes the teens will see a side of life that might help them turn around their own lives and set them on a new and more positive path.
4. Which of the following best describes Pedley in the past?
A. Optimistic. B. Selfless. C. Unsympathetic. D. Independent.
5. What will Pedley do in the small Ugandan village?
A. Help build community facilities. B. Do business with the local people.
C. Help farmers increase potato output. D. Introduce tools to improve English teaching.
6. Why will Pedley work with English teenagers in trouble?
A. To inspire them to live a more positive life. B. To encourage them to make friends with locals.
C. To make them learn about different cultures. D. To train them to become doctors in the future.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Jon Pedley sold his farmhouse and car to start a business in Uganda.
B. The people in Kigazi live a poor life and need clean water and hospitals.
C. Nowadays English teenagers are sent abroad in order to change their lives.
D. A former businessman gave up his comfortable life to help others in Africa.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. A 7. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了英国商人Pedley放弃优渥生活赴乌干达住泥屋助村民建校医所并帮问题青少年重归正途。
【4题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“I had always put the pursuit of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn’t care who I was hurting(我一直把追求金钱置于一切事务之前。只要自己过得好,我并不在意伤害了谁)”可知,他过去只在乎自己和金钱,不在乎伤害别人,是不同情他人、自私的。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段末“He will help to build schoolrooms for children and tanks to hold clean water for villagers. Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.(他会帮助为孩子们建造教室,并为村民建造储存清洁水的水箱。如今,基加西的居民必须步行两英里才能到达医院,所以佩德利还将协助建造医生办公室)”及第四段“Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a ‘camp’ in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities (佩德利的组织还将与陷入困境的英国青少年合作。这些青少年将被送往乌干达的一个‘营地’,由佩德利负责管理。这些青少年将住在用泥土搭建的棚屋里,并帮助为基加西的孩子们建造供水、医疗和教育设施)”可知,他会帮助建教室、储水罐、诊所,还有当地用水、医疗、教育等设施,这些都属于社区公共设施。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段末“Pedley hopes the teens will see a side of life that might help them turn around their own lives and set them on a new and more positive path.(佩德利希望这些青少年能接触到生活中的一些方面,从而帮助他们改变自己的生活,走上一条更加积极的新道路)”可知,他的目的是激励这些问题青少年走上更积极的生活道路。

C
There’s an inner desire amongst most people to explore our planet. There’s this sense in modern society that somehow we will find a better existence or we’ll find happiness by going on holiday. I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.
There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they’re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind, because a lot of people are constantly thinking: “How am I going to present myself to my social media group back home through my posts on Facebook or Instagram?”
But this is just one side of the problem. On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment. It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times by 2050.
I admit that there has been a considerable increase in people’s awareness about the environment. And some people say that this can eventually lead to a shift in our behavior as tourists. However, I can’t share their optimism. A lot of research has been done into the extent to which tourists are willing to adapt their behavior. And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environmentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.
I’m old enough to remember when tourism was just the summer holiday, and you would look forward to those two weeks a year when you would go on holiday. It was special and meaningful, but nowadays it is so easy to travel. Travel is now seen as a right, not as a privilege. However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realize the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.
8. What is the problem with most tourists according to the author?
A. They don’t care about our planet at all.
B. They post too many photos on social media.
C. They can hardly find the right place to explore.
D. They fail to have a meaningful traveling experience.
9. What does the underlined part “taken a toll on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Improved. B. Damaged. C. Saved. D. Shaped.
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Tourists can hardly be affected by environmental awareness.
B. Tourists are unaware of the effect of their behavior.
C. Tourists’ environmental awareness has been increased.
D. Tourists find it hard to travel without harming the environment.
11. Why does the author hope airline tickets will be more expensive?
A. To limit the development of tourism. B. To create a sense of equality in society.
C. To help people value their traveling experience. D. To make people less excited about travelling.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中“I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.(我认为我们几乎已经习惯于成为游客,以至于很多人去旅游,却没有真正考虑他们为什么要这样做)”和第二段中“There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they’re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind(有很多人每年都会去同一个地方,因为他们对那里感到舒适和熟悉。人们对所处之地的体验越来越少。他们可能人在那里,但心不一定在)”可知,作者提到大多数游客的问题是他们只是身体在旅游目的地,却没有用心去感受,即他们无法获得有意义的旅行体验。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。划线短语下文“It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times by 2050.(据报道,2019年航空旅行的碳排放占全球碳排放的2.5%,到2050年这一数字可能会达到三倍)”说明了旅游对环境产生了不良影响。所以“On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment.(另一方面,我们的旅行taken a toll环境)”中动词短语taken a toll on的意思是“损害”,与B项“Damaged”同义。故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environmentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.(即使是那些经常以环保方式消费或行事的人,实际上也会暂时忘记他们的环保承诺,表现得像普通游客一样。他们确实会有某种生态负罪感,但尽管如此,他们还是继续旅行,继续坐飞机)”可知,尽管一些游客有环保意识,但很难改变自己的旅游行为,说明游客很难受到环保意识的影响。故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realize the value of travel experience and really enjoy it.(然而,在某种程度上,我希望旅行成本,至少是航空旅行成本会大幅上升。在我看来,只有这样,人们才能意识到旅行体验的价值并真正享受它)”可知,作者希望机票更贵是因为他希望通过增加旅行成本的方式来帮助人们重视他们的旅行体验。故选C项。
D
Following the Famous Silk Roads
The Silk Roads were a network of ancient trade routes that extended from East Asia all the way to the Mediterranean. A key section of the Silk Roads is the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor (走廊) , which stretches over a distance of around 5, 000 kilometres through China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, covering a total of 8, 700 kilometres of trade routes. The three countries jointly pursued an application for UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) status which contained detailed research on the 33 sites along the corridor. This made history as the first successful multinational World Heritage application.
The starting point of the corridor and the entire Silk Roads network is Xi’an, in Shaanxi Province. Further west on the Silk Roads, the geography gradually changes from wild deserts to high, snow-capped mountains to vast grasslands as the routes pass through the Tianshan Mountains and emerge in the valleys of Central Asia. Although the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Roads ends here, the network continues westwards until it reaches the Mediterranean.
The corridor began to develop in the 2nd century. Assigned by the emperor, the ambassador Zhang Qian journeyed from Chang’an to Central Asia, seeking to build bridges between the Han Dynasty and the Western Regions. Following Zhang’s efforts, trade routes took shape and relationships were strengthened between the major powers of the time, with the routes network reaching as far as the Roman Empire.
Economic activities along the routes network were not limited to trade in silk. They contributed many other items to the marketplace of goods. The routes were busy with camels carrying loads of goods and businessmen selling everything imaginable. China’s exports included silk, porcelain, ironware and tea, while horses, jewellery, spices and grapes were all imported over vast distances from the West.
In addition to trade exchange, the network served as a bridge for cultural exchange which shaped the evolution of science, art, technology and many other areas in societies along the network. Astronomy and mathematics were introduced to China from India and Arabia; important Chinese inventions such as papermaking and printing were brought to the West.
All of these activities contributed to a great age of expansion as trade and cultural exchanges gave people access to new goods, knowledge and ideas. These routes connected Eastern and Western civilizations, which achieved a shared development. The addition of the Chang’an-Tianshan corridor to the UNESCO World Heritage List is a milestone in recognition of the Silk Roads as a crucial part of humanity’s common heritage.
12. What is the core section of the Silk Roads?
A. The Mediterranean.
B. Xi’an, in Shaanxi Province.
C. Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
D. The Chang’an-Tianshan corridor.
13. What can we infer about the corridor’s early growth?
A. Roman Empire founded its trade business.
B. Its birth promoted later East-West trade and cultural connections.
C. It won world heritage status through separate national research.
D. Western goods reached China right after Zhang’s visit.
14. Why did Zhang Qian travel from Chang’an to Central Asia?
A. Purchase horses, jewellery, spices and grapes.
B. Export silk, porcelain, ironware and tea.
C. Establish diplomatic relations between his country and others.
D. Seek help from the most powerful western countries.
15. What was the role of the Silk Roads according to the passage?
A. It speeded up the development of the countries involved.
B. It was recognized by the UNESCO as China’s heritage.
C. It helped to change the wild deserts to grasslands.
D. It started a trade competition between countries along the way.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

● Choose a charity (慈善机构) or organization. Firstly, what sort of organization do you want to help? ____17____ And perhaps you have been affected by some of the problems that a charity aims to support, like children who need help. Are you good at dealing with people. Do you have a background in paperwork? Charities need volunteers to work in shops, organize or manage money-raising events, or, in the case of animal charities, walk dogs.
Find a position. Most charities have a website with a section aimed at attracting potential volunteers and they advertise specific roles available. ____19____ In this case, you would usually need to phone or visit their offices to find out how you can help. You will be welcomed with open arms!
Apply for suitable positions. Be prepared with information about your previous (or current) employment and the sort of skills you have, so that the charity can match you to the most appropriate role. 第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lila lived in a seaside village where green trees met the blue sea. She loved beach games but feared deep water since age six, when a huge wave covered her head. She never forgot how water filled her nose. Now at twelve, she only played where water touched her knees, watching others swim far out.
Her little brother Tom, only seven, had been sick for twenty days. His cough shook his small body, and he slept all day. The village nurse looked worried. “We need a miracle,” she sighed.
One sunny day, old sailor Ben sat on the beach. Children crowded around as he described a shining white shell in the hidden Sea Cave. “It has special power,” he said, showing his brown hands like a map. Lila knew instantly — this could help Tom!
At sunrise, Ben’s small boat took them over quiet waters. Jack, a boy with a friendly face who won swimming prizes, came to help. They jumped into clear water. Small yellow fish swam quickly around Lila’s legs. But as they went deeper, the water grew dark and cold. Lila’s heart beat fast. Dark rocks looked scary. She stopped moving, holding Jack’s arm tightly.
“Look at me!” Jack made funny faces. “See that starfish? Swim to it with me!”
Ben stayed close, his voice peaceful. “Fear visits everyone,” he said. “But courage never leaves.” Lila agreed, moving her legs bravely.
Suddenly, strong waves pushed them hard. Salt water hurt Lila’s eyes. Through her teary eyes, she saw Tom’s favorite toy boat in her mind — she must save him! Closing her mouth, she pushed through the rough water, Jack leading the way.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, they reached the dark cave.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After that day, Lila was never afraid of deep water again.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Finally, they reached the dark cave. Ben’s lamp showed the shell glowing softly on a wet rock. Lila carefully held it, feeling warmth spread through her fingers. Jack smiled, “You beat the sea!” Swimming back, sunlight danced on waves. The water now felt friendly. At home, Lila put the shell in warm milk. Tom drank it and slept deeply. Next morning, he sat up hungry. They smiled together.
After that day, Lila was never afraid of deep water again. She swam daily to the coral garden. Soon village children asked for lessons. A little girl shook at the shore, like the baby Lila. “Hold my hand,” Lila said gently. “Feel the water lift you?” The girl laughed as waves rocked them. Lila taught that courage grows with practice. She kept the white shell on her window. “See this?” she'd tell nervous swimmers. "Fear is a wave — face it, and it carries you forward.”

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
