Showcasing Chinese Culture
Last month, our class held a “Showcasing Chinese Culture” project. Each group chose a different cultural topic to introduce. It was an amazing experience to learn and share our culture together.
Group One chose Chinese paper-cutting. They showed beautiful paper-cuttings of animals, flowers and Chinese characters. The group leader explained that paper-cutting has been practiced in China for over 1,500 years. People usually put paper-cuttings on windows and doors during festivals to bring good luck.
Group Two introduced Beijing opera. They played a short video of a famous Beijing opera performance. The actors wore colorful costumes and painted their faces in different colors. The group told us that the colors of the faces have special meanings. For example, red means loyalty and bravery, while white means cunning.
Group Three chose the Miao people’s silver jewelry. They brought some real silver jewelry to show the class. They explained that the Miao people believe silver can drive away evil spirits and bring health. The jewelry is also a symbol of the Miao people’s beautiful art and rich culture.

The hot pot is one of the most popular meals in China. 36 The hot pot used to be preferred in winter, but recently it has been appearing on tables all year round.
Apart from its delicious taste, there are two other important reasons for the Chinese to like the hot pot. The first one is that the hot pot is considered a great way to make new friends. People gather around the pot, chatting, eating, drinking and having fun. 37 Eating the hot pot can warm the body and improve circulation (血液循环) in winter, but can increase perspiration (出汗) to help cool the body in summer.
38 Two of the most popular hot pots are Sichuan hot pot and Beijing mutton hot pot. Sichuan hot pot is famous for its numbing and spicy (又麻又辣的) taste, because of the addition of some special food materials — Sichuan pepper and other spicy things like chili (辣椒). 39 Beijing mutton hot pot is the most popular hot pot in the northern China hot pots. Mutton is its main part and the soup is made from meat bones.
When you eat a hot pot in a restaurant, generally, there are two types of soup bases: spicy and clear. A clear soup base has a quite light taste. 40 A spicy soup base usually has Sichuan pepper, which is numbing and spicy.
If you have a mixed group with some who don’t eat spicy food, there is a special divider in the middle between the spicy and clear soup, which is called a double-flavor hot pot (鸳鸯锅).
A.It’s made from seafood or meat bones.
B.It has a long history of about 2,000 years.
C.The other is that the hot pot is a “healthy meal”.
D.Pepper and chili make it different from other hot pots.
E.The hot pot is becoming more and more popular in China.
F.There are several kinds of hot pots in China with different soups.

Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids.
It is usually made of haws (山楂) with lots of vitamin C. About 800 years ago, one of the emperor’s wives was sick and didn’t feel like eating. The doctor told her to eat 10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them in hot sugary syrup (糖浆) and dried them. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket. They taste both sweet and sour at the same time.
Now people use many other fruits to make Tanghulu, such as cherry tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, bananas and grapes. To make Tanghulu at home is also easy, and takes less than 20 minutes. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack for yourself or treating friends, Tanghulu is a good choice. Here are the steps.
First, thread each fruit onto a bamboo stick. You can use the whole fruit or cut it into small pieces.

11.B 12.A 13.B 14.C 15.D 16.A 17.A 18.D 19.A 20.B
根据“famous for its pleasant weather”可知,此处应填褒义词形容食物。
根据后文“When we sat down in the restaurant”可知,作者和笔友一起去了餐厅。take sb. to do sth. 故填take。
根据“to take the order”可知,服务员需要靠近顾客。 went back和walked away与点单动作矛盾,sat down不符合服务员工作状态。故填come up。
根据“we should put the meat...” what/when/where需在从句中充当成分,此处不适用。故填that。
根据“the first bite”可知,考查固定搭配take a bite吃一口。 eating虽意为吃,但take a bite更地道。
根据前文“This is the most delicious soup...”
根据后文“a loving wife crossed a bridge...”

Our group chose Chinese tea culture. We prepared tea for the class and taught everyone how to taste tea. We explained that tea has been an important part of Chinese life for thousands of years. Drinking tea is not just about the taste—it is also a way to relax and connect with others.

Second, make the syrup. Cook the sugar with water until it turns into large bubbles.
Third, carefully dip the fruit into the hot syrup, and then quickly put it into the ice water, because this will help make the syrup hard.
Why not have a try at home now?
