The three members are Commander (指令长) Zhu Yangzhu, pilot Zhang Zhiyuan, and payload specialist (载荷专家) Li Jiaying (also known as Lai Ka-ying). Specialists say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “Culture shock” is what these specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some obvious factors in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems — the telephones, post office, or transportation — may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock? Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they have back home. They find themselves without any identity. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock causes a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security. This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture. Getting to know the new environment and gaining experience — these are the long-term solutions to the problem of culture shock.
8. What situation will people meet when they move to a new country?
A. Get a good education with others’ help.
B. Make friends with the locals very soon.
C. Get used to their new surroundings with difficulty.
D. Fall in love with the culture of the country quickly.
9. What is a factor that results in culture shock?
A. Low income.
B. Poor living conditions.
C. The homesickness.
D. The language communication.
10. Who might have the worst culture shock?
A. Those who are very poor at home.
B. Those who are very successful at home.
C. Those who are less homesick abroad.
D. Those who have fewer difficulties abroad.
11. What is the best way to overcome culture shock?
A. Return to our own country.
B. Get familiar with new culture.
C. Develop a strange sense of self-protection.
D. Protect ourselves from unfamiliar environment.
D
Parents have widely different views on pocket money. Five new fathers were asked this question and this is how they answered.
Ashish Khanna: Although many argue that pocket money helps develop children’s sense of value, I don’t agree. I wouldn’t give my child any pocket money. First of all, I never got pocket money when I was a child and I seem to have a good sense of value. If my child ever wants something and I feel it is necessary, I will buy it for him.
Sharad Sanghi: I wouldn’t give my child pocket money because I don’t want her to form the perception (看法) of “her” money and “my” money. Besides, if I refuse to buy her something that I think is bad for her, she may buy it with her pocket money secretly. I feel it also encourages children to care more about money than anything else. I don’t want my child to start judging other children by the amount of money they have.
Rakesh Shah: I would give my child pocket money. I feel that children should learn to spend money intelligently and not go overboard on spending. They will learn what their limitations are and feel the difficulty when they have to pay for something that they can’t afford.
Rajiv Patel: I would give my child pocket money because it is important for her to learn how to manage money. I will give her a fixed amount every month and if she spends all the money before the month is over, then she will learn a lesson and not spend money so freely.
Vikram Desai: I would certainly give my child pocket money. But I would not give it to him on a weekly or monthly basis. He would have to earn it. If he helps me finish some of my jobs or helps his mother with housework, I will reward him. This helps him realize that “money does not grow on trees” and it needs hard work to earn money.
12. What do you know about Ashish Khanna?
A. He helps his child develop better without money.
B. He will buy what he thinks his child really needs.
C. He can have much control of his child by money.
D. He was given too much pocket money when young.
13. Who would give his child pocket money every month?
A. Ashish Khanna. B. Sharad Sanghi.
C. Rakesh Shah. D. Rajiv Patel.
14. According to Vikram Desai, what do children learn from earning pocket money?
A. Money is not easy to get.
B. Money can be got from trees.
C. Money is not so important to people.
D. One can get lots of money if he/ she works hard.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. No pocket money for children.
B. Pocket money teaches money management.
C. Five fathers hold different views on pocket money.
D. Pocket money may lead children to value money too much.

It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was chatting happily, excited to see each other again after the long holidays. When the door slid open, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms. Green, followed by an ordinary-looking boy.
“This boy’s name is Mark,” Ms. Green announced. “He comes from another school, and he’s going to be in our class from today. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly. ”
The class clapped. But I didn’t want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he had no outstanding qualities, considering his small figure and casual T-shirt.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing,” Ms. Green spoke up. “Mark actually has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Mark insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write your words on a piece of paper.”
This single speech sent the whole class into noises. Some students looked at each other with expressions of surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity.
Ms. Green calmed everyone down. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?”
“How can a disabled person be intelligent?” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else. would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom.
It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms. Green’s.
“How about you, James?” She asked me. “Is it okay for you to take care of Mark just for today?”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed (叹气) and nodded slightly.
Ms. Green gestured for Mark to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.

Dear Tom,
Thank you so much for your sincere congratulations on the successful launch of Shenzhou-23. I totally understand your doubt about the necessity of space exploration, but I hold the view that it is of great importance.
Firstly, space exploration helps us explore unknown mysteries of the universe and broaden human beings’ horizons. Besides, it drives technological innovation. Many advanced technologies developed for space research have benefited our daily lives greatly. Moreover, it represents human courage to pursue dreams and challenge limits.
I firmly believe that continuous space exploration will bring more possibilities for human progress and connect the world closer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their classmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere bombarded them with inquiries. Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the classroom. Obviously confused about the sudden noisy situation, Mark turned to me for explanations in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms. Green, whose words I set down on paper for Mark.
Then Mark rose from his chair and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Mark shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was drowned out by a thunderous outburst of applause. Having a lump in my throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover.
