Like other cities in New Jersey’s Rust Belt(铁锈地带), Paterson has fallen on hard times, with its once-famous textile(纺织品) industry in disrepair and its schools abandoned.
Strickland, an expert in school design and instructor at MIT in Boston, had been hired as a consultant to help Paterson find sites for new schools. The architect hatched a grand plan to help revitalize(复兴) Paterson’s schools and the city itself.
Six career academies are holding classes at old sites. These small changes have not gone unnoticed. The city, as the residents expected, has the potential to shine.
A nearly unoccupied three-story shopping mall houses two schools, one focused on medical careers, the other on media arts and urban planning. English and math teachers for the two schools lead classes in storefronts that were empty just a year ago. Across town, under the thick wooden beams(横梁) of an old textile factory and a train engine plant, students with disabilities will learn about careers with the region’s transportation systems.
Strickland requires his graduate students at MIT to help Paterson construct models for new building projects in the city. Jane Riesman, one of Strickland’s students, has been working with her kids on an educational park that would replace a wasteland of lifeless asphalt(沥青) and grass that stretches between two downtown schools. The surrounding neighborhood is hardly inspiring; pulling-down of a high-rise housing project is underway, showering dust everywhere. But Riesman’s students envision a very different place. One of the student models includes a swimming pool, skating court, climbing wall, sandbox, and a pond with a fountain and lots of trees. “It’s fun, and it makes us feel like we’re in charge and helping the community,” says 15-year-old Marilyn Medina, one of the model’s creators.
Strickland says it’s important for the students to dream. “They’re setting a tone for the town,” he says. “The kids can push the envelope and change the culture.”
24. What was Paterson like in the past according to Paragraph 1?
A. It fell into severe disrepair.
B. It rarely produced any iron.
C. Its textile industry was well-known.
D. Its schools were completely deserted.
25. What was the residents’ attitude towards Strickland’s plan?
A. Opposed. B. Favorable.
C. Dismissive. D. Uncaring.
26. What can we infer about Riesman’s students?
A. Diligent and innocent. B. Funny and responsible.
C. Honest and trustworthy. D. Imaginative and helpful.
27. What does the text focus on?
A. Transforming old buildings to shine.
B. Revitalizing the city’s shopping mall.
C. Developing students’ logical thinking.
D. Witnessing the rise and fall of Paterson.

Meltwater from a glacial(冰川的) lake outburst is flooding Juneau, Alaska. Such events happen more often as climate change destabilizes ice. On August 5, 2025, residents of Juneau, Alaska, were awakened by emergency alerts. A glacial lake north of the city had burst its icy banks, sending a wave of meltwater rushing down the Mendenhall River. It covered roads, damaged homes, and forced the evacuation(疏散) of more than 300 people. For scientists who study cryospheric (冰冻圈的) changes, the disaster came as a confirmation of a troubling trend.
“Glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs, have always been a risk in icy regions, but climate change is supercharging that risk,” says Maya Wilson, a glaciologist at the University of Alaska Southeast. As global temperatures rise, glaciers are melting faster. This meltwater pools behind moraines(冰碛) to form glacial lakes. Warmer temperatures also weaken the moraines themselves, many of which are held together in part by ice that is now melting away.
The Juneau event is by no means unique. In 2022, a GLOF in Pakistan destroyed bridges and irrigation systems, cutting off food and medical supplies. In 2023, a similar flood in Peru swept away a hydroelectric plant, leaving nearby towns without power for weeks. What makes these events particularly dangerous is their unpredictability. Unlike rainfall floods, GLOFs can occur with little warning. The moraine dams (堤坝) can collapse suddenly after years of wear and tear. “We can monitor the size of glacial lakes with satellites, but predicting exactly when a dam will fail is extremely difficult,” Wilson explains. “Small changes, like a sudden heatwave or a minor earthquake, can bring about a disastrous outburst.”
Communities in high-risk areas are struggling to adapt. In Juneau, local officials are setting up sensors to track water levels and the stability of nearby moraines. The government has also assigned $2 million for flood protection projects. Yet adaptation efforts face significant obstacles. Many glacial lake regions are too remote to place equipment. Funding is insufficient, especially for developing nations. “We can’t just react after they happen,” Wilson argues. “We need long-term investments in monitoring and early warning systems. Otherwise GLOFs would only become more frequent and destructive.”
28. Why is the Juneau event mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show severe damage caused by GLOFs.
B. To call for long-term global financial support.
C. To explain the necessity of disaster prevention.
D. To introduce the forming mechanism of GLOFs.
29. What might be the main cause of frequent GLOFs?
A. Lake expansion. B. Surrounding glaciers.
C. Climate change. D. Geographical features.
30. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. GLOFs may strike without advance warning.
B. Local facilities are well-built to monitor GLOFs.
C. Satellites can forecast dam collapse with accuracy.
D. GLOFs happen more often in developing countries.
31. What does Maya Wilson stress in her remarks?
A. Sufficient funds for post-disaster relief. B. Priority for emergency response.
C. Flood protection projects in remote areas. D. Sustained support for risk prevention.
D
The natural world teems with animals that move in groups, from flocks of birds to packs of wolves to schools of fish. But ants, like humans, are special: animals that routinely travel in congested(拥挤的), two-way traffic. When ants find food sources, many species will lay down a chemical trail for other ants from their colony to follow. These trails can fill up quickly and involve hundreds of ants per minute.
To see how ants avoid congestion, scientists studied them as they moved across a bridge to gather food and return it to the nest. To control ant density(密度), the scientists varied the width of the bridge among 5 millimeters, 10 millimeters and 20 millimeters and the number of ants from 400 to 25,600.
Co-author Sebastien Motsch, an associate professor in Arizona State University’s School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, specializing in studying how individuals interact and self-organize without a central authority to direct them, said the ants changed their speed and behavior to avoid congestion when getting into the densest traffic. “Surprisingly, it appeared that no traffic jam occurred. They always managed to keep flowing somehow.”
Unlike human drivers jockeying for position on the road, ant “commuters” cooperate to accomplish a mutually beneficial goal, so optimizing their ability to forage(觅食) while avoiding congestion is more a survival skill than convenience or altruism.
Understanding how ants manage to keep on trucking through the worst jams could have widespread applications beyond traffic engineering, such as in fields involving dense flows of agents, particles or packets of information.
Ants in general appear to share beneficial reinforcement mechanisms that help them adapt to situations involving masses of bodies. Carpenter ants spread out to avoid trampling each other when trying to escape through a narrow door. Fire ants know how to stay out of each other’s way during construction projects. Garden ants excel at avoiding bottlenecks.
Motsch and his colleagues next hope to discover the mechanisms behind the ants’ self-regulation. But doing so could require tracking each ant’s behavior individually. “This kind of tracking is possible,” Motsch said, “but in an environment where it’s so crowded, it’s really challenging.”
32. How did scientists study ants’ traffic behavior?
A. By referring to the computer modeling in the lab.
B. By observing how ants communicate with each other.
C. By comparing the behavior of different species of ants.
D. By varying the number of ants and the width of a bridge.
33. What does the underlined word “jockeying” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Waiting. B. Fighting. C. Searching. D. Applying.
34. What does paragraph 5 mainly show?
A. Ants’ behavior in natural habitats.
B. The impact of traffic jams on wildlife.
C. Applications of ants’ traffic management.
D. Differences between ants and human traffic.
35. What is a key factor in ants’ avoiding traffic jams?
A. Their tiny size.
B. Their competitive nature.
C. Their reliance on a central authority.
D. Their cooperation to achieve a common goal.
For so long, we had been told by our parents, teachers, and society that the reason why we have not achieved our goals is that we don’t want them hard enough, we don’t have discipline or we’re not motivated. We have always felt guilty for not being where we want to be. Guilt doesn’t create progress either. So we feel guilty and we are still stuck. The book Atomic Habits offers a different perspective. ____36____. Instead, it says that you need to make your habits as easy as possible to do. That’s the only way to stick to them. It provides four laws or systems that you can apply to good habits.
●To make good habits obvious: make them more visible in your routine or environment. For example, add a new habit to something you already do. ____37____. This is called habit stacking.
●To make good habits attractive: pair them with a current habit or activity that you enjoy. I have started carrying a book whenever I go to the park. Instead of scrolling on my phone, I’ll read. My brain has started connecting a new desired habit (reading) with a habit I enjoy (going to the park). ____38____.
●To make good habits easy: start small and reduce friction. To become a runner, start by going on brisk walks, build up to a one-mile run and so on. ____39____.
●____40____. This can be buying yourself something nice or taking yourself out to dinner if you stick to a habit for a period of time like a week or a month. Charting your progress on the calendar or in a diary can also be enough of a reward.
So now use this mantra before you find yourself trying to avoid reciting words, “One percent better every day.”
A. Eat a fruit after work or read a page before bed.
B. Habit formation focuses on outcome rather than process.
C. Reading becomes more attractive, even when not in the park.
D. This method contrasts with traditional discipline and motivation.
E. To eat healthily, start with one daily fruit instead of extreme diets.
F. To make good habits satisfying: reward yourself after consistent practice for a period.
G. To make good habits rewarding: offer yourself instant rewards after each small behavior.

Ten-year-old Tom always felt lonely. His parents were always occupied with work. They left home early in the morning and came back late at night. Tom often ate dinner alone and went to bed without a goodnight kiss. For him, there were no family games, no city tours, no weekend outings.
One day, Tom's parents brought home a gift—a smart watch. "This watch has a special friend inside,” Mom said with a smile. "Her name is Ling. She can talk to you, answer your questions, and even tell you stories.” A wave of anticipation swept over Tom as he put on the watch and pressed the button. A gentle voice came out, "Hello, Tom! I'm Ling. Nice to meet you!” Tom's eyes lit up. He had never received such an interesting gift before.
From that day on, Ling became Tom's closest companion. Every morning, Ling would say, "Good morning, Tom! Have a great day at school!” Whenever Tom encountered difficulties with his homework, Ling would patiently provide thorough explanations. After Tom got into bed, Ling would tell his favorite tales about brave knights and magical lands. Sometimes, when Tom felt scared of the dark, Ling would sing softly to comfort him. To Tom, Ling was more than a voice; she was family.
His parents noticed Tom's change. "See? Our little boy seems much happier now,” Dad said one evening. Mom agreed, "The watch really helps,” relieved. They thought their son was no longer lonely. What they didn't know was that sometimes, after Ling had finished her stories, Tom would lie awake in the darkness, listening to the silence that filled the room. He loved Ling, but he couldn't help thinking: if only Mom and Dad were here.
One afternoon after school, Tom tripped and fell on the way home. The watch hit a rock with a loud crack. When Tom picked it up, the screen was dark. He pressed the button again and again, but nothing appeared. "Ling? Ling, are you there?” he called desperately. There was no reply.

C 25. B 26. D 27. A

A 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据第一段“It covered roads, damaged homes, and forced the evacuation (疏散) of more than 300 people. (它造成了道路损毁、房屋受损,并迫使超过300人进行疏散。)”可知,在第一段中提到了朱诺事件是为了展示冰川湖溃决洪水所造成的严重破坏。
29. 细节理解题。根据第一段“Such events happen more often as climate change destabilizes ice. (随着气候变化导致冰层变得不稳定,此类事件发生的频率也相应增加。)”以及第二段“Glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs, have always been a risk in icy regions, but climate change is supercharging that risk (冰川湖溃决洪水(简称 GLOF)在寒冷地区一直是一种潜在的危险,但气候变化正在极大地加剧这一风险)”可知,造成频繁发生冰川湖溃决洪水的主要原因可能是气候变化。
根据第三段“Unlike rainfall floods, GLOFs can occur with little warning. (与降雨引发的洪水不同,冰川湖溃决洪水往往来得毫无征兆。)”可知,冰川湖溃决洪水可能会毫无预警地发生。
31. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“We need long-term investments in monitoring and early warning systems. (我们需要对监测和预警系统进行长期投资。)”可知,玛雅·威尔逊在她的讲话中强调持续支持风险防范工作。

D 33. B 34. C 35. D
根据文章第二段“To see how ants avoid congestion, scientists studied them as they moved across a bridge to gather food and return it to the nest. To control ant density (密度), the scientists varied the width of the bridge among 5 millimeters, 10 millimeters and 20 millimeters and the number of ants from 400 to 25,600.(为了了解蚂蚁如何避免拥堵,科学家们研究了它们在穿过一座桥去收集食物并返回巢穴时的行为。
根据文章第五段“Understanding how ants manage to keep on trucking through the worst jams could have widespread applications beyond traffic engineering, such as in fields involving dense flows of agents, particles or packets of information.(了解蚂蚁如何在最糟糕的拥堵中保持通行,除了交通工程领域外,还可能有广泛的应用,比如在涉及密集流动的代理、粒子或信息包的领域)”可知,本段主要讲述了理解蚂蚁如何在最拥堵的情况下保持通行在其他涉及密集流动的领域也有广泛的应用,因此本段介绍了蚂蚁的交通管理在其他领域的运用,故选C。
根据文章第四段“Unlike human drivers jockeying for position on the road, ant “commuters” cooperate to accomplish a mutually beneficial goal, so optimizing their ability to forage(觅食) while avoiding congestion is more a survival skill than convenience or altruism.(与人类司机在路上争夺位置不同,蚂蚁“通勤者”通过合作来实现一个对双方都有益的目标,因此优化觅食能力并避免拥堵更多是一种生存技能,而非仅仅为了方便或利他)”可推知,蚂蚁避免交通堵塞的关键因素是它们通过合作来实现一个对双方都有益的目标,故选D。
D 37. A 38. C 39. E 40. F
36. 空格前“For so long, we had been told by our parents, teachers, and society that the reason why we have not achieved our goals is that we don’t want them hard enough, we don’t have discipline or we’re not motivated. We have always felt guilty for not being where we want to be. Guilt doesn’t create progress either. So we feel guilty and we are still stuck. 空格后“Instead, it says that you need to make your habits as easy as possible to do. That’s the only way to stick to them. It provides four laws or systems that you can apply to good habits.(相反,它说你需要让你的习惯尽可能容易做到。这是坚持下去的唯一方法。它提供了四个你可以应用于好习惯的法则或系统。)”提到《原子习惯》主张让习惯尽可能容易做到。D选项“This method contrasts with traditional discipline and motivation.(这种方法与传统的纪律和动力形成对比。)”中的“traditional discipline and motivation”正好指代前文的“we don’t have discipline or we’re not motivated”,而“This method”则指代后文的“make your habits as easy as possible to do”,既承接了前文“传统观点导致的问题”,又能自然引出后文“《原子习惯》的不同视角”,完美衔接上下文逻辑。
37. 空格前“To make good habits obvious: make them more visible in your routine or environment. For example, add a new habit to something you already do.(让好习惯显而易见:在你的日常或环境中让它们更显眼。例如,在你已经做的事情上添加一个新习惯。)”提到让好习惯显而易见的方法是在已做的事情上添加新习惯。空格后“This is called habit stacking.(这被称为习惯叠加。)” A选项“Eat a fruit after work or read a page before bed.(下班后吃一个水果或睡前读一页书。)”中的“after work”和“before bed”都是“already do”的事情,而“Eat a fruit”和“read a page”则是添加的新习惯,正好是前文“add a new habit to something you already do”的具体例子,与后文的“habit stacking”完全呼应,完美解释了“习惯叠加”的概念。
38. 空格前“To make good habits attractive: pair them with a current habit or activity that you enjoy. I have started carrying a book whenever I go to the park. Instead of scrolling on my phone, I’ll read. My brain has started connecting a new desired habit (reading) with a habit I enjoy (going to the park).(让好习惯有吸引力:把它们和你现在喜欢的习惯或活动配对。我现在每次去公园都会带一本书。我会读书,而不是刷手机。我的大脑已经开始把一个想要养成的新习惯(阅读)和我喜欢的一个习惯(去公园)联系起来。)”提到让好习惯有吸引力的方法是将其与喜欢的习惯配对,作者举例将阅读和去公园联系起来。C选项“Reading becomes more attractive, even when not in the park.(阅读变得更有吸引力,即使不在公园。)”中的“more attractive”正好呼应了前文的“make good habits attractive”,而“even when not in the park”则是前文“connecting reading with going to the park”的结果——当大脑把阅读和喜欢的公园联系起来后,阅读本身也变得更有吸引力了,即使不在公园也想读,完美体现了这种配对方法的效果。
39. 空格前“To make good habits easy: start small and reduce friction. To become a runner, start by going on brisk walks, build up to a one-mile run and so on.(让好习惯容易做到:从小事做起,减少阻力。要成为一名跑步者,从快走开始,逐渐增加到一英里跑步等等。)”提到让好习惯容易做到的方法是从小事做起,减少阻力,作者举例成为跑步者从快走开始。E选项“To eat healthily, start with one daily fruit instead of extreme diets.(要健康饮食,从每天吃一个水果开始,而不是极端饮食。)”中的“start with one daily fruit instead of extreme diets”正好是前文“start small and reduce friction”的具体例子,与“start by going on brisk walks”的逻辑完全一致——都是通过从小事做起、降低难度来让习惯更容易坚持,完美呼应了“让好习惯容易做到”的法则。
40. 空格后“This can be buying yourself something nice or taking yourself out to dinner if you stick to a habit for a period of time like a week or a month. Charting your progress on the calendar or in a diary can also be enough of a reward.(这可以是如果你坚持一个习惯一段时间,比如一周或一个月,给自己买些好东西或带自己出去吃晚餐。在日历或日记上记录你的进步也可以是足够的奖励。)”提到坚持习惯一段时间后给自己奖励的方法。F选项“To make good habits satisfying: reward yourself after consistent practice for a period.(让好习惯有满足感:在持续练习一段时间后奖励自己。)”中的“reward yourself after consistent practice for a period”正好是后文“buying yourself something nice”“taking yourself out to dinner”“Charting your progress”的核心概括,直接点明了本段的核心建议——通过奖励让好习惯有满足感,与后文的举例完全呼应,完美总结了让好习惯有满足感的法则。

Hello, everyone.
As the picture shows, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thank you for listening.
Hello, everyone!
As the picture shows, a helicopter is dropping the letter “I” into the word “Team”, which breaks the original word. The image tells us that selfish and self-centered behavior will tear a team apart.
A class is just like a team. We all share the common goal of building an outstanding class and achieving healthy personal growth. To reach this goal, we ought to cooperate and support one another and be willing to make necessary compromises. Unity is the key to success. On the contrary, if everyone only thinks about themselves, team spirit will be badly damaged. As far as I’m concerned, a team consists of “we” rather than individual “I”.
Thank you for listening.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
Tom had no choice but to turn to his parents for help.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At that moment, both Mom and Dad saw clearly what they had missed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tom had no choice but to turn to his parents for help. Clutching the broken watch, he hurried home. Like usual, the house lay empty and quiet. But this time, the loneliness felt unbearable — not because Ling was gone, but because the people he truly needed were absent. He waited and waited. It was nearly midnight when his parents finally returned. They were alarmed to see Tom curling up on the sofa, face wet with tears. “What happened, Tom?” Mom rushed over. Wordlessly, he held out the broken watch. Dad soon fetched his toolbox trying to fix it, but in vain. Seeing this, Tom couldn’t contain himself any longer and burst into desperate sobs. Between gasps, he poured out his loneliness — the silent dinners, the empty house, the longing for someone to be there.
At that moment, both Mom and Dad saw clearly what they had missed. They realized that no watch, however smart, could ever take the place of their presence. Immediately, Mom wrapped her arms around Tom, apologizing, “I’m so sorry. We thought the watch was enough, but we were wrong.” Dad knelt beside them, his voice thick with guilt. “From now on, we’ll be home earlier. No more lonely dinners.” Together they drew up a family schedule — Tuesday night board games, Friday pizza-making, Sunday afternoons in the park. They promised to make it a weekly routine and wrote it on the family calendar in bright colors. That night, the family came to understand technology might offer comfort, but only love could fill the silence of an empty home.
