Our home is slowly turning into a smart home, thanks to all kinds of cool smart devices (设备). Here are some of the ones I enjoy using the most.
First, our smart lights are fantastic. I can control them with my phone or just my voice ‒ no need to get out of bed to turn them off on a cold night! What’s really cool is that I can change their brightness and colors. For example, I set them to soft yellow when my kids are listening to bedtime stories and bright white when they are doing their homework. Last night was our family movie night, and we set the lights to soft blue, which made the room more comfortable.
Next, I’m a big fan of our smart door lock. Remember those days of searching for keys in the dark? Gone! Now, we can unlock the door with a fingerprint (指纹), a password, or even our phones. It’s really convenient (方便的), especially when I’m carrying lots of things. And the best part? We can create temporary passwords for guests, so we don’t have to worry about giving out spare keys. These passwords will stop working after the guests leave.
We also have a smart camera inside the house. It’s not for spying (窥探) on anyone! It’s mainly for checking on our energetic dog when we’re not at home. We can see what he’s doing, and sometimes, we even talk to him through the camera! It makes us feel connected to him. The smart camera is perfect for those with pets.
These smart devices are not just tools. They’re like our friends. They teach me that technology can bring both joy and safety to our daily lives.

Different families have different ways of handling (处理) chores and pocket money. Some parents believe paying children for doing chores teaches important lessons, while others disagree. They believe helping around the house is just what kids should do as part of the family. Let’s see how these different ideas work in real life.
One common way is to pay kids for each chore ‒ like $1 for washing the dishes. Parents who use this way say it teaches kids the value of working for money, but some notice that children may only help when paid.
Another way is to give pocket money weekly or monthly if children finish all chores. This makes chores feel less like work. But kids might still do chores just for money, not because they want to.
Some parents don’t pay kids for chores because they believe it might make kids focus more on rewards (奖励) than on their sense of duty. To them, chores are something kids need to do as part of the family. But these parents might still give kids pocket money ‒ just not for chores. They want kids to learn how to handle money wisely without connecting money to housework. However, if they do this, children might not see the connection between work and money.
The middle ground is paying only for bigger, more challenging chores, like washing the car, but not for small daily chores, like making the bed. This way, children can not only learn that helping the family is important, but also realize that extra (额外的) work can bring extra rewards.
In a word, no single chore-money rule is perfect. If one way doesn’t work, try another until you find what works.

You may know that bees make delicious honey. But do you know that they keep us all alive?
Every year on May 20, it’s World Bee Day. It’s a day to thank bees for all they do. 46
Three quarters of the world’s flowering plants depend on bees and other animals to grow. When bees fly from plant to plant, they carry pollen. The pollen makes new plants grow.
There are about 20,000 different kinds of bees all over the world. They work all day for their queen, the biggest bee in the hive (蜂巢). She will lay 800,000 eggs in her lifetime. 47 They are losing habitats (栖息地). They also get sick easily from chemicals (化学品) used by farmers and they die because of higher temperatures with climate changes. 48
People are now turning to technology to help save bees. One example is a project called RoboRoyale. 49 This will get the queen bee to lay more eggs and make more bees.
50 After all, if we save the bees, we are saving our own food and our beautiful planet!
