When the air is polluted, we wear masks (口罩) to protect ourselves. What about bees and butterflies? They can’t wear masks.
A recent study led by Dr. Ryall may give us the answer. His study finds that air pollution is bad for pollinators (传花粉者) like bees, butterflies and other insects. They can’t smell flowers because of the pollution.
Pollinators are important. They spread pollen (花粉) among plants with flowers. This helps the flower produce seeds (种子) and fruit. Without pollinators, farms cannot make food.
To do their study, Dr. Ryall’s team built eight areas. They sent some bad gas into six of these areas. The other two areas had normal air. They were the control group. In the six areas, they found that only 30% of the pollinators flew in. Once they were there, they didn’t hang around.
“The results were much more severe (严重) than we thought,” said Dr. Ryall. “The pollution was so serious that it would be bad for the growth of flowers.”
Scientists explained that bad gas can break down the smells of flowers. This makes it hard for pollinators to find their food. Shannon, a scientist in India, pointed out if we do nothing to solve the problem of air pollution, pollinators will become fewer and fewer.
31. The following things are pollinators EXCEPT ________.
A. B. C. D.

34. What happened to pollinators in the areas with bad gas?
A. They found food more easily. B. They couldn’t find each other.
C. They didn’t hang around. D. They flew in more than usual.
35. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. bees and butterflies B. pollen and flowers

Our grandparents seem to have magic powers sometimes. Give them a Chinese lunar calendar, and they will know what the weather will be like days or even months later. What’s the secret? They are following the 24 Solar Terms (节气), which is an important part of Chinese culture. And on Nov. 30th, 2016, the United Nations added it to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产).
In ancient times, most Chinese people made their living on farms. So, weather changes were important for them. Without the help of satellites (卫星), the internet or the weather broadcast, Chinese people studied the sun’s movement with a sundial (日晷仪). They also paid attention to other natural changes such as air temperature, water and crop growth. As early as the Shang Dynasty, the Chinese ancestors had already established (设立) four major solar terms. During the Zhou Dynasty, eight solar terms marking the four seasons were established. Until the Han Dynasty, the present 24 solar terms was established completely. The term became their guide to farming work. For example, the solar term jingzhe (惊蛰) is when insects wake up from a long sleep in the cold winter. Farmers take it as a sign of warm weather and get busy working.
The 24 Solar Terms is honored as China’s fifth great invention after paper-making, printing, the compass and gunpowder. Now, people still say, “Do not show your feet after hanlu (寒露).”Why? It’s because the solar term hanlu marks the coming of the cold days.
36. How did the 24 Solar Terms come into being?
A. With the help of satellites.
B. With the help of weather broadcast.
C. By learning from people working on farms.
D. By studying the sun's movement and other natural changes.
37. The underlined word “ancestors” means ________.
A. grandparents B. emperors C. ancient people D. great inventors
38. The 24 Solar Terms can be used for ________.
A. changing weather B. learning Chinese history
C. waking up insects D. guiding people in farming work
39. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. our grandparents have magic powers
B. jingzhe is regarded as the start of cold winter
C. the 24 Solar Terms was established step by step
D. weather changed more often in ancient times than it does now
40. The underlined sentence (Do not show your feet after hanlu (寒露).) in the last paragraph shows ________.
A. what five great inventions of China are
B. why hanlu marks the coming of cold days
C. how the 24 Solar Terms guides people in their daily lives
D. when the 24 Solar Terms was honored as China's fifth great invention

Do you like exercise? Do you know something about plank exercise (平板支撑) ?
Plank exercise has become more and more popular in recent years. It requires little time. It’s easy to do. What’s more, doing plank exercise regularly may bring lots of advantages.
Performing plank exercise as a daily home exercise before or after school will not only speed up your metabolism (新陈代谢), but also keep your metabolic rate (速率) high all day long. Doing the exercise regularly will make you burn lots of calories. This is especially useful if you have to sit in the classroom for hours every day. A high metabolic rate will help you lose weight and keep in good shape.
Have you ever tried standing on one leg? You couldn’t keep it for more than ten seconds, right? It’s not because you are drunk. Instead, it’s because your muscles (肌肉) aren’t strong enough to help you keep your balance. Doing plank exercise regularly will improve your balance. Stronger muscles will also help you keep a standing position at all times.
▲ Just think about it: You are sitting in your chair at home or at school all day long. Your muscles get tired, and your legs get heavy. Plank exercise will relax the muscle groups. As a result, it can have a powerful and positive effect on our mood.
Considering all the advantages of plank exercise, will you make it part of your everyday life?
41. Which of the following shows the change in your metabolic rate after you finish plank exercise?
A. B. C. D.

A. they are drunk B. their muscles are tired
C. their muscles are weak D. they have fewer muscles

A. You will also see some mental advantages.
B. You may get other physical (身体的) advantages.
C. Plank exercise is necessary for us.
D. Everyone needs plank exercise.
44. How can plank exercise improve our mood?
A. By making our muscles strong.
B. By speeding up our metabolic rate.
C. By slowing down our metabolic rate.
D. By relaxing the muscle groups.

Disney’s site lists it a “slow ride,” and it may not be as thrilling as Space Mountain. ____49____ Since the wait time to ride the Carousel is usually pretty short compared to other rides, it’s a great attraction when you need a little break from the excitement.
