Eight-year-old Tim spent most of his free time watching TV or playing video games. He became quieter and less self-confident. His father, Mr Green, noticed this—Tim hardly smiled and looked unhappy when he had to stop playing. One sunny morning, Mr Green said, “Let’s try something new!” Tim frowned (皱眉). “Do I have to?” he asked, holding his controller tightly. But his father gave him a cap and opened the door. “Just half an hour outside,” he said.
Tim went out slowly, sighing. The sun was bright, and the air felt different. He kicked a stone, still unhappy. Would this “new thing” be boring? Or could it bring some fun he never knew?
Their first run was arduous. Tim could only jog for five minutes before getting breathless. “Don’t give up,” Mr Green encouraged. “We’ll go a little further each day.” They ran through spring rain and summer heat, past golden autumn leaves and winter’s first snow. Tim’s small legs grew stronger as his father patiently matched his pace.
By the third month, something changed. Tim began waking up early, eager to pick new running routes. They explored parks, crossed bridges, and discovered hidden paths in their neighborhood. Along the way, they talked about school, friends, and silly jokes that made them laugh while running. After a year, Tim could easily run 3 kilometers. But the real change was shown in his bright smile and straight posture. His teacher reported he volunteered to answer questions more often in class. At the school sports day, Tim surprised everyone by winning the 800-meter race. “I practice with my dad every day!” he told his cheering classmates proudly.
The running routine did more than improve Tim’s health. Those 30 daily minutes became their special bonding time. Without phones or distractions, they shared thoughts and created memories that no video game could match. Mr Green found himself looking forward to their runs as much as Tim was.

A new study found that helping the environment—picking up trash, using less plastic, or walking instead of driving—can make people just as happy as doing fun activities like hobbies.
In his research, Michael Prinzing from Baylor University in Texas looked at how eco-friendly activities affect happiness. “Many people think it’s hard to live in an eco-friendly way because it means giving up comfort or convenience,” Prinzing said. “But helping others and being eco-friendly can actually make life more fun.”
His study was made up of two smaller studies. In the first study, 181 adults from 14 countries were asked about their daily activities and how they felt each day for 10 days. The study found people felt happier on days when they did something good for the planet. The effect was even stronger for those who already lived in an eco-friendly way, but it still worked for those who didn’t.
Prinzing’s second study looked at 545 college students in the US. They were put into three groups—one group did eco-friendly activities, another did fun activities, and the third just had a normal day. After two days, people in both the eco-friendly group and the fun activity group felt much happier than those in the third group.
These studies suggest that helping the planet helps people feel good. Each study only took place over a few days, so more research is needed to see if the effects last longer. But either way, doing something good for the planet could make your day that much better!

31. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By asking questions. B. By giving the facts.
C. By telling some stories. D. By using an old saying.
32. What did the first study find about eco-friendly activities?
A. They made people feel healthier but not happier.
B. Only eco-friendly people felt happier.
C. People felt happier on days when they helped the planet.
D. They worked better than fun activities.
33. What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. People who did something good for the planet. B. People who were from 14 countries.
C. People who just had a normal day. D. People who did fun activities.
34. According to the text, what are the researchers most likely to do next?
A. Compare happiness in different countries. B. Test eco-friendly activities on animals.
C. Test with older age groups. D. Test how long the effects of eco-friendly activities last.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. How to Save the Planet B. Eco-friendly Actions can Make People Happy
C. How to Live an Eco-Friendly Life D. Two Studies on College Students

【答案】Possible version 1:
Joining School Clubs or Focusing on Studies?
In middle school, students often wonder whether to join clubs or just study. In my opinion, focusing on studies is a wiser choice.
First, it helps develop a deep understanding of subjects. Spending more time on exercises allows us to master rules better. Besides, focusing on studies cultivates the habit of time management, which benefits our daily learning routine. More importantly, mastering knowledge today is the key to a brighter future. As the saying goes, “No pain, no gain.”
In conclusion, we should spare no effort to focus on studies for a meaningful life.
Possible version 2:
Joining School Clubs or Focusing on Studies?
In middle school, students often wonder whether to join clubs or just study. In my opinion, joining school clubs brings countless benefits.
First, it is a perfect way to explore interests. For instance, the painting club allows me to try different art styles and show creativity. Moreover, clubs help improve social skills. By working with teammates on exhibitions, I learn to communicate and cooperate effectively. These experiences teach me the value of teamwork and make me more confident.
All in all, joining clubs makes my life richer and more meaningful. I hope everyone values school clubs as an important part of life.
