Leo had always suffered from a deep fear of public speaking. Whenever he had to stand on a stage or speak in front of crowds, his heart would race wildly and his palms (手掌) would sweat. In Grade 9, his English teacher, Mrs. Foster, announced a storytelling contest with the theme “Courage in Our Lives.” The moment he heard the news, Leo’s stomach tightened sharply, and he felt like running away.
After class, his best friend Maya noticed his worry. She came over and gently encouraged him, “Why not tell the story of your grandpa? He never gave up, even when illness took away his sight, and later he became a respected painter.” Leo’s eyes lit up. His grandpa had always been his hero. That night, Leo sat by the window, recalling grandpa’s firm voice: “Fear is a paper tiger — it looks scary but cannot truly hurt you if you face it bravely.”
For a whole week, Leo practiced in front of a mirror every evening. At first, his voice trembled (颤抖) and he often forgot his lines. But he kept going. On the day of the contest, Leo took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. He began slowly, “My grandpa taught me that courage is not the absence of fear, but moving forward despite it.” Gradually, his voice grew steady (沉稳的) and powerful. When he finished, the audience burst into warm applause.
Leo did not win first place that day, but he gained something far more valuable — lasting confidence. Since then, he has volunteered to host school events and joined the debate club. The special experience changed his life, proving that real growth comes when we dare to step out of our comfort zones.
26. Why did Leo feel scared about the storytelling contest?
A. He was not brave enough to speak in public.
B. He thought the story theme was difficult.
C. He worried his story wouldn’t interest others.
D. His teacher had high standards for the contest.
27. What did Leo’s grandpa teach him about fear?
A. Fear will disappear if you’re brave enough. B. Fear is not as dangerous as it seems.
C. Fear is something we should always hide. D. Fear makes it impossible to be brave.
28. What did Leo gain from the storytelling contest?
A. A chance to make a new best friend. B. The first-place prize in the contest
C. Lasting confidence to speak in public. D. Praise and attention from his teachers
29. It can be inferred from the passage that after the contest, Leo will ________.
A. avoid public speaking as much as possible
B. become more willing to take on new challenges
C. win many more speech contests in the future
D. share his grandpa’s story with more people
30. What lesson does the passage mainly teach?
A. Winning is everything in our daily life
B. Stepping out of comfort zones leads to growth
C. Strong family support is the key to success.
D. Storytelling is not difficult for everyone.

Have you ever noticed that your body feels different when you’re nervous? Maybe before a speech, your hands get cold, or your face turns warm. But scientists have found that your nose also goes through some noticeable changes during stress.
Researchers at the University of Sussex recorded 29 people with a special camera to see what happened when they were stressed. First, the volunteers listened to white noise to calm down. Then, they were asked to finish two different tasks in front of strangers. They had to give an unplanned (即兴的) speech and do maths in their head, saying the answers out loud.
The study found that people’s nose temperature dropped by 3℃-6℃ when they’re under pressure. Normally, people’s nose stays between 32℃ and 35℃. This is because the blood in their faces goes to their ears and eyes, which are important for people to find dangerous situations. Once the stress is over, the blood returns to normal within a few minutes. Gillian Forrester, who led the study, added that how long it takes someone’s nose to return to its normal temperature could help show how well they manage their stress.
The study could help more than humans. Stress also changes blood flow in primates (灵长类动物) faces. Researchers hope to use this to understand how they feel and how to make them feel better, since they cannot describe it. As Gillian Forrester said, “We’ve studied them to better understand ourselves. It’s time to give back.”
31. What body parts will have changes when people are nervous?
A. Hands, face and nose B. Eyes, hands and nose
C. Face, mouth and hands D. Nose, cars and face
32. Which of the following activities did the volunteers do during the study?
A. Listen to a speech. B. Make white noise.
C. Solve math problems. D. Record the temperature.
33. According to Paragraph 3, which picture shows the study result?
A. B.
C. D.
34. Which of the following is an opinion according to the text?
A. Stress also changes blood flow in primates’ faces.
B. The study could help humans as well as primates.
C. People’s normal nose temperature is between 32°C and 35°C.
D. Volunteers had to finish two different tasks in front of strangers.
35. What does Gillian Forrester mean according to her words in the last paragraph?
A. They want to send all primates back to the forests.
B. They want to return home after finishing the study.
C. They want to understand primates and make them feel better.
D. They want to stop studying humans and turn to animals instead.
