When I was in the sixth grade, my teacher asked our class the question, “What does ‘doing the right thing’ mean to you?” She asked us to think about it over the weekend, and to talk to anyone else we thought might have a good answer. By Monday, we were asked to hand in an article on it, and be prepared to show our answers.
The whole weekend, I tried to come up with something that would impress (使留下深刻印象) my teacher and be easy to do. I talked to my parents, called my grandmother, and asked my next door neighbor. Everyone had good answers, but I didn’t feel like I could do them.
On Sunday afternoon my parents took me to my Aunt Cindy’s house. After dinner, my parents told me to play with my four-year-old cousin Andrea while they visited. I turned on the television and found a Disney movie for Andrea, and then I sat down and started to write my article. I still didn’t know what I was going to write about. Soon I felt a pair of eyes on me. It was Andrea.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“I have to write an article about what doing the right thing means to me. “I answered. Andrea laughed.” That’s easy,” she said.
“Okay, tell me the answer,” I said.
“Doing the right thing means: Be nice to your family and friends. Do what your mum says. Never lie. Take a bath when you’re dirty. Gain some knowledge and new abilities. Don’t waste water and electricity...”
I looked at Andrea amazingly. Not only had she answered a very difficult question for me, but I could easily follow all of her rules. And all I had to do was to be nice. So when I wrote my article back home, I included the story about Andrea
Two weeks later, my teacher returned everyone’s articles. I received an A+ along with a little note my teacher had written: “Always do the right thing and give Andrea an A+, too!”

How the Brain Cleans Itself
According to some researchers, the brain is very active during sleep. One reason is probably that the brain cleans itself during sleeping hours. This idea has gotten the attention of researchers. This is because losing a good night’s sleep can cause people to think unclearly, while a lasting lack of sleep is believed to increase the risk of a serious brain illness. Then how does the brain clean itself?
Over 12 years ago, scientists at the University of Rochester first reported finding a system in the brain. A water-like substance (物质) moves through small channels near blood vessels (血管) to carry waste out of the brain.
One type of waste is called beta-amyloids (β淀粉样蛋白). Too much of it can cause brain problems. When scientists injected (注射) mice with beta-amyloids, they left the brain faster when the animals were sleeping.
However, studying this system in humans has been challenging. Regular MRI scans (扫描检查) can show some of the channels, but they can't show how the system works.
To tackle this problem, the research team injected a special substance into five patients. It “lit up” during MRI scans 24 to 48 hours later. It was seen moving through the brain using the channels as in the earlier research on mice.
This discovery is meaningful and will help scientists learn more on how brain waste clearance is linked to human health. “Researchers are now planning to measure (测量) glymphatic function (类淋巴功能) in people,” said Dr. Jeffrey Iliff who has helped lead the research. But he isn’t sure of the result. Besides the influence of sleep, animal studies show that a blood pressure drug might improve glymphatic clearing. Jeffrey and his workmates plan to study this drug in a group of patients. It seems that larger studies in healthy people are also needed.
26.What may happen if people lose a good night’s sleep?
A.They will only be tired and sleepy. B.They will feel much more excited.
C.They will find it hard to think clearly. D.They will face a serious brain illness.
27.How did the scientists study the system in humans?
A.They asked five patients to sleep. B.They took some pictures of blood vessels.
C.They injected a special substance into themselves. D.They used MRI scans and a special substance to help.
28.What does the underlined word “tackle” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Avoid. B.Cause. C.Compare. D.Overcome.
29.What will Jeffrey probably do in the future?
A.He will begin to work in the University of Washington.
B.He will start to research how sleep influences the clearing.
C.He will lead the waste-clearance research around the world.
D.He will study how the drug helps improve glymphatic clearing.
30.What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】26.C 27.D 28.D 29.D 30.C

【详解】26.根据第一段“This is because losing a good night’s sleep can cause people to think unclearly”可知,睡不好会让人思路不清。
27.文章第五段 “the research team injected a special substance into five patients. It ‘lit up’ during MRI scans 24 to 48 hours later” 表明科学家结合特殊注射物质与核磁共振扫描开展人体研究。
28.根据第四段“However, studying this system in humans has been challenging. Regular MRI scans (扫描检查) can show some of the channels, but they can’t show how the system works.”可知,研究人类大脑的该系统存在难点,常规方法无法满足研究需求,因此此处指研究团队要解决这个问题,tackle意为“解决、克服”,D选项Overcome符合词义。
29.文章第六段 “a blood pressure drug might improve glymphatic clearing. Jeffrey and his workmates plan to study this drug in a group of patients” 说明 Jeffrey 接下来会研究药物对类淋巴清理功能的提升作用。

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for students at White Cloud Primary School in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital (数字的) teacher.
Will, their new digital teacher, is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that turns up on the students’ computers or smartphone screens when called. Developed by Vector and Soul Machines, Will is able to reply to questions the kids might have using a microphone. Thanks to a digital camera, he can also pick up non-verbal signals (非语言信号) and react. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he can smile back. This two-way communication not only helps draw the students’ attention but also allows the program’s developers to make changes to Will if needed.
Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer for Soul Machines, says, “Kids who have grown up in this digital time get used to new technology quickly. So we hope to develop the idea of digital humans in the education area.”
However, no matter how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one, his knowledge base is not large. More importantly, even the smartest digital humans can never predict and react to all the unexpected problems that educators have to solve daily. But Will could come in handy as a “personal teacher”, providing kids with one-on-one help on the subjects or even topics.
Will is a 46 teacher. (仅填1词)

47.根据文章第三段“So we hope to develop the idea of digital humans in the education area.”(所以我们希望在教育领域发展数字人的理念。)可推知Greg Cross发明Will是希望在教育领域发展数字人的理念。题目要求“不超过8词”,提取该句的核心动宾短语即可,意为“发展数字人类的理念”,填develop the idea of digital humans。
48.根据文章第四段“For one, his knowledge base is not large.”(首先,他的知识库不大。)可推知它没有庞大的知识库,填a large knowledge base。
49.根据文章第四段“But Will could come in handy as a ‘personal teacher’, providing kids with one-on-one help...”(但Will作为“私人老师”可能会派上用场,为孩子们提供一对一的帮助……)可推知它能提供一对一帮助。故填providing kids with one-on-one help。
50.本题为开放性试题,言之有理即可。

【答案】例文
Girls and boys,
With the development of the Internet, many students have smartphones.
Currently, many middle school students are addicted to their smartphones in their spare time. Some students use them in wrong ways. They play phone games in class. They chat with friends during study time. They also watch short videos late at night.
These habits bring bad results. Staying up late hurts their eyes and makes them tired. They can’t focus in class, so their grades drop.
Here are my suggestions. First, use the phone for only one hour a day. Second, do sports with family or classmates, like running or swimming. Third, join a club, such as reading or drawing. Let’s put down phones and live a healthy life!

A. B. C. D.

(仅填1词)
