II.
A
In November, the temperature drops sharply. If you go to the local market around this time, you may find something unusual. There are often groups of vegetables that look like “ugly ducklings”. They aren’t fresh or smooth. Instead, they look old and wrinkled (皱巴巴的) because of the cold frost (霜) outside.
You probably think that these vegetables aren’t tasty at all since they look so unattractive. But here’s a surprising fact: when you take a bite, you will find they taste surprisingly delicious and sweet. “Sellers must put some sugar in them!” you might think.
▲ Vegetables are clever living things—they want to stay alive in winter. They know they will “die” if the water inside their bodies turns into ice, so they have a clever way to avoid freezing (结冰) and stay alive. Many vegetables contain something called “starch (淀粉)”. When it gets cold, starch is changed into sugar to protect themselves from freezing. This is very important, and it has to do with a simple scientific fact: plain water freezes easily, but sugar water has a lower freezing point and is harder to freeze. When vegetables fill their bodies with sugar, the water inside them becomes much harder to freeze.
This process protects the vegetables from the cold weather, stopping them from freezing to death. That’s great news for us too—it means we are able to enjoy vegetables that are naturally sweet and delicious. So these vegetables aren’t just “ugly”; they’re actually pretty clever!
11. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By giving a famous Chinese saying.
B. By asking a question about vegetables.
C. By comparing different kinds of vegetables.
D. By describing a common scene in November.
12. What can we infer (推断) from the underlined sentence?
A. The vegetables are too sweet to eat.
B. People think that sellers are very clever.
C. People don’t believe the ugly vegetables are naturally sweet.
D. Sellers really add sugar to the vegetables to make them sweet.
13. Which of the following sentences can be put in ▲?
A. Why do these ugly vegetables taste so sweet?
B. Where can we buy the sweetest winter vegetables?
C. How do farmers grow these vegetables in winter?
D. Are wrinkled vegetables cheaper than smooth ones?
14. What does the writer think of the ugly vegetables?
A. They are useless and not worth buying.
B. They look terrible and taste bad as well.
C. They are smart and tasty.
D. They are only good for making money.
15. In which part of a magazine can we probably read the passage?
A. Travel & Culture. B. Science & Nature.
C. Technology & Education. D. Fashion & Beauty.
D 12. C 13. A 14. C 15. B

根据第一段“In November, the temperature drops sharply. If you go to the local market around this time…”
划线句“Sellers must put some sugar in them!”(卖家肯定往里面加糖了!)
根据第二段“taste surprisingly delicious and sweet”以及第三段“Vegetables are clever living things”和文章结尾“they’re actually pretty clever”可知,作者认为这些蔬菜既聪明又美味。

① A major park in Shenzhen has decided to stay dark at night for migratory (迁徙的) birds. This decision has received no public complaints; instead, it’s received a wave of praise.
② Shenzhen Bay Park lies on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, one of the world’s nine important migratory bird routes. Every winter, tens of thousands of birds stop here during their journeys. Too many man-made lights can stop the birds from resting well and following their flying routes. To solve this problem, the park now dims (使……变暗) its lights at night during the migration season.
③ The park is using a scientific method to keep both humans and birds safe. Main walkways still have basic lighting to ensure that people can use the park at night. But areas that are important to migratory birds are kept dark.
④ Over the years, Shenzhen has taken many steps to protect migratory birds. Thanks to these efforts, from 2015 to 2023, the number of bird species (种类) in the area increased from 83 to 220.
⑤ Actually, Shenzhen is not alone. In Lanshan, Hunan Province, some public places turn off their lights at a fixed time in the evenings from September to November every year. Other cities like Beijing and Chengdu have introduced strict nighttime lighting controls.
⑥ People in these cities express widespread support. They believe that a beautiful city doesn’t need to be lit up all the time. By turning off the lights, people can rediscover the pleasure of peace, stars and rest. This simple act shows how modern cities can develop while still making room for nature.
16. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Why birds migrate twice a year.
B. Why the park dims its lights at night.
C. How distances affect birds’ flying routes.
D. How city lights guide birds on their migratory journeys.
17. Why are the numbers mentioned in the fourth paragraph?
A. To prove that Shenzhen’s efforts to protect migratory birds have worked.
B. To compare Shenzhen with other cities in protecting migratory birds.
C. To explain why Shenzhen Bay Park attracts so many birds.
D. To show that Shenzhen has the most bird species in China.
18. How do people in the cities feel about the controls?
A. Interested. B. Supportive. C. Surprised. D. Worried.
19. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Getting close to nature
B. Working for a better planet
C. Cities turn off lights for birds
D. Effects of light pollution on migratory birds
20. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. ①②/③④/⑤⑥ B. ①②③/④/⑤⑥
C. ①/②③/④⑤⑥ D. ①/②③④/⑤⑥
B 17. A 18. B 19. C 20. D

第四段提到“Thanks to these efforts, from 2015 to 2023, the number of bird species in the area increased from 83 to 220.”,列举数字是为了具体证明深圳保护迁徙鸟类的努力取得了显著成效。
根据第六段首句“People in these cities express widespread support.”

Born in a small village, Vijay Pratap Singh received his early education in a local school in India. In 2012, he graduated from university and later began working at a bank. However, getting used to life in the southern city was tough. “It was difficult to manage food, language and social customs. I could hardly fit into the local community,” Vijay said. At that time, he would explore nearby forests and mountains for peace.
At 23, Vijay left his job to start AdvenThrill, an adventure travel company. He knew that understanding the technicalities of trekking (远足的技术性细节) would be important, so he completed a mountaineering course at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. Over time, he built a network of trained trekking leaders.
Trekkers are advised to follow a 20-day fitness plan at home before a trek. “Anyone can apply, but they must provide medical test reports,” Vijay said. The reports are checked before booking. “That’s why we only accept sign-ups a month in advance to ensure there’s enough time to review their physical condition,” Vijay explained. “Before the trek begins, we also conduct medical examinations every day to track blood pressure and other vital signs (生命体征). If anyone is found unfit, they are cared for at the base camp.”
Looking ahead, Vijay wants to open new unexplored trekking paths. “It’s a slow process, requiring better GPS mapping and more field research, but it could reshape the trekking landscape of India. If the right safety measures and infrastructure (基础设施) are put in place, we can attract more international trekkers,” Vijay said.
21. What made life challenging for Vijay when he worked at the bank?
A. The lifestyle differences. B. The few outdoor activities.
C. The city's weather conditions. D. The working hours at the bank.

A. By asking international guides for help. B. By controlling the number of trekkers.

A. By giving a famous Chinese saying.

A. Why birds migrate twice a year.
B. Why the park dims its lights at night.

18. How do people in the cities feel about the controls?

A. To improve his physical fitness. B. To learn skills for his business.
C. To become a famous mountaineer. D. To teach higher-level trekking skills.
23. How does AdvenThrill ensure trekking safety?
A. By asking international guides for help. B. By controlling the number of trekkers.
C. By setting strict requirements. D. By conducting daily training.
24. What can be inferred from Vijay’s words in the last paragraph?
A. He will work for Indian infrastructure soon.
B. New trekking paths have become easier to open in India.
C. He thinks that GPS mapping is more important than field research.
D. Better safety measures may help India draw more foreign trekkers.
