October 16 is World Food Day. Food security is a big problem for countries around the world. To save more food, governments and companies have taken different actions, showing their wisdom in protecting the planet.
Using Food in the Fridge
Many families are confused about the ingredients in their fridges, and before they find out how to cook them, the ingredients have gone bad. To deal with such food waste, a company from Romania developed an app called OH, A Potato! By taking pictures, or simply scanning (扫描) the things in your fridge, this app can suggest recipes with the food you’ve got. This helps people make better use of food ingredients and avoids waste.
Changing Date Labels
In Norway, the government and companies are saving food by changing date labels (标签) on food packaging. Many customers throw away food once it passes the date, but some food is still safe to eat near, on, or even after these dates, according to FoodHero.
To make the labels more accurate, Norwegian companies are using the term “best before, often good after” or “not bad after” instead of “use by” on food labels.
Banning Unsold Food Waste
In 2016, France became the first country in the world to ban (禁止) supermarkets from throwing away unsold food. They are now required to donate it to charities or food banks. If they don’t, the managers would face a heavy fine or even jail (监禁), according to FoodHero. On September 22, 2025, Alex experienced a new way of learning through an educational tour.
On that day, Alex woke up early, filled with excitement. It was fall, the harvest (收获) season. His school organized the “Celebrating the Harvest Festival” trip to a rice farm. They would learn how to harvest rice by hand on the farm.
As soon as they arrived there, they were greeted by the sight of beautiful green fields. Their guide, a kind and patient farmer, introduced the sickle (镰刀) and showed how to use it. “Take your sickle, bend down, hold the rice stems, and cut them at 15—25 centimeters above ground level,” the farmer said. Alex thought to himself, “This will be a piece of cake.” But he soon found out it was not as easy as it seemed. It took him ten minutes to learn the basic skills. “You’re doing great,” the farmer encouraged the students with a gentle smile. The students worked hard under the warm sun. Some of them did a good job, while others did not. Tim even accidentally cut his finger, but he never complained. Everyone tried their best, and there was a sense of achievement that grew stronger with each passing hour.

Labor—The Ladder to Personal Growth
Labor is more than just physical work — it is the ladder to our personal growth. It not only helps develop practical life skills, but also shapes a stronger character. For example, when I do the gardening, I suffer tiredness but learn to stick to it.
To make labor a part of our daily life, we can start with small things. Firstly, we can do chores at home, such as washing dishes or tidying up our rooms. Secondly, take part in school labor activities. Finally, it’s a good idea to volunteer in community service to help those in need.
Let’s take action from now on. By doing small labor tasks every day, we can grow better and better.

Food banks and charities are also asked to collect and store the food in clean conditions and give it out with respect.

When Alex got back home in the evening, he was tired but satisfied. After taking a shower, he tasted the rice and he thought it was the most delicious food he’d ever had. Alex also learned a lot from this experience. He realized that the rice in the bowl came from a lot of hard work.
