The Dead Sea, located between Israel and Jordan, is not a real sea but a salt lake. It is one of the most unique natural wonders on Earth. With a salt content much higher than that of ordinary seas, it allows people to float easily on its surface—you can even read a book while floating!
The Dead Sea is about 430 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth’s land surface. Rivers flow into it, but there is no outlet for water to flow out. Over time, the water evaporates, leaving behind large amounts of salt and minerals. This is why the lake is so salty.
However, the Dead Sea is facing a serious problem. Due to human activities, people take too much water from the rivers that feed it. As a result, the water level of the Dead Sea is dropping year by year, and its area is getting smaller. If this continues, the Dead Sea may dry up within the next 100 years.
Despite its name, the Dead Sea is not completely lifeless. Some special bacteria and algae can survive in its extremely salty water. The surrounding area is also home to unique plants and animals that have adapted to the harsh environment.
59.Why can people float easily on the Dead Sea?
A.Because its salt content is very high.
B.Because its water is very clear.
C.Because it is very deep.
60.What is the Dead Sea’s position on Earth?
A.It is the highest lake on Earth.
B.It is the lowest point on Earth’s land surface.

A.Its area is getting smaller.
B.Its water level is rising.
C.Its salt content is decreasing.

Subject Home visit—Help needed!
Hi Yaming,
One more week to go! I’m so excited to see you. I’ll meet the Zhaos as soon as I land in Shanghai. I’ll be staying with their family for two weeks, and I’m a little nervous! Mr and Mrs Zhao are both in their forties, and they have a son who is younger than me. His grandmother also lives with them.
Could you give me some advice? Should I bring a gift? In America, we usually bring the host something small, like food. Is that a good idea? Also, what are the right table manners? What are some good conversation topics in China? Is there anything else I should know? I’m worried about doing something silly. It could give people the false impression that I’m a rude person. First impressions are so important that I don’t want to say or do anything wrong!
I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Cheers,
Tina

C.It is the largest salt lake on Earth.
61.What problem is the Dead Sea facing?
A.Its area is getting smaller.
B.Its water level is rising.
C.Its salt content is decreasing.
【答案】59.A 60.B 61.A
根据第一段中“With a salt content much higher than that of ordinary seas, it allows people to float easily on its surface”可知,人们能漂浮是因为盐度很高。
60.根据第二段中“The Dead Sea is about 430 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth’s land surface.”
61.根据第三段中“As a result, the water level of the Dead Sea is dropping year by year, and its area is getting smaller.”
C

Cheers,
Tina

76.What are you reading now? 77.Can you tell me something about it? 78.What should we do 79.What should we do 80.Thank you/Thanks a lot
What are you reading now?
Can you tell me something about it?
80.由答语“You’re welcome.” Thank you/Thanks a lot。

One possible version:
Natural disasters happen from time to time, so it’s important for us to know what to do when they happen. Here are some safety tips.
When a flood happens, we’d better get to a higher place. We shouldn’t walk or swim through the floodwater. If an earthquake happens, we should hide first and run out of the building when the ground stops shaking. We shouldn’t stand near a tall building. If we are outside when a wildfire begins, we should find a safe place to stay and call 119. We shouldn’t breathe in the smoke, or we will be easily hurt by it.
Lastly, we should stay calm.
