When to arrive
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you to his or her house, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come at about 3:00 p.m., that means you can arrive a little late after 3:00 p.m. But usually it is a good idea to arrive on
time.
What to take
Often it is also nice to take something to your friend’s house. It can be a box of chocolate for you two to share, or maybe a movie that you can watch together. You can also take some flowers. Taking a gift is a nice way to show your friend that you are glad to be at his house.
How to greet
When you visit your friend’s house, you may meet his parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. If your friend is Sam Green, call his parents Mr or Mrs Green. This will show them more respect. Another way to show respect is to call them Sir or Madam.
It is a pleasant thing to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend’s parents, and they will be happy to invite you again.

Good manners are like a warm smile—they make people feel comfortable and build nice connections with others. For middle school students, learning to be polite is not just a rule, but a key part of growing into a kind and respected person. This article explains why good manners matter so much in daily life.
First, good manners show respect to everyone around you. Simple words such as “please”, “thank you” and “sorry” can brighten someone’s day. For example, if you thank a teacher for their help or hold the door for a classmate with heavy books, you let them know you care. At home, greeting your parents politely or sharing snacks with your siblings are also good manners, which makes family life happier and closer. Polite behaviour at home also teaches younger kids to be respectful to others.
Second, good manners help avoid conflicts. If you wait for your turn to speak in class and don’t cut in when others are talking, you can keep discussions friendly. In public places, waiting in line instead of pushing can stop arguments and keep things in order. What’s more, good manners are useful for future life. Employers (雇主) often prefer people with polite behaviour, as it helps create a friendly workplace.
Good manners cost nothing but bring us great rewards. They shape our character and help us become better people. Let’s start with small polite acts every day!
26. What are good manners like according to the passage?
A. A big hug. B. A warm smile. C. A helpful hand.
27. Which of the following is NOT an example of good manners at school?
A. Thanking a teacher for help.
B. Holding the door for a classmate
C. Cutting in when others are talking.
28. What does the underlined word “conflicts” mean in Chinese?
A. 冲突 B. 奖励 C. 设计
29. Why do employers like people with good manners?
A. They can earn more money.
B. They can finish work quickly.
C. They can make the workplace friendly.
30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. To tell some polite words we can use in daily life.
B. To explain the importance of good manners for middle school students.
C. To introduce different kinds of good manners at school and home.
D
How can I become a better person? This question has been in my head for a long time. As students, we spend most of our time studying. I know learning at school, of course, makes you better persons, but I always dream of doing more meaningful things to improve myself.
Last year, I joined a volunteer programme and got to know a group of autistic (患自闭症的) children. At first, it was really hard to communicate with them—they would often avoid eye contact and refuse to talk. After a two-week training on how to interact with autistic kids I became more skilled and patient. I sat with them to draw and play simple games, getting closer to them day by day. To my surprise, I found that every one of them had his or her own talent. And their colourful pictures on the wall attracted my special attention, though it was difficult to tell what they were trying to express.
Moved by their works, I decided to hold a charity sale with my classmates. We walked on the busy street, showing passers-by the kids’ creative pictures. We sold 60 pictures that day and many people praised the works for their rich imagination.
Back to the question about how to become a better person, I think I am lucky enough to get my own answer.

【答案】26. B 27. C 28. A 29. C 30. B

How to Be a Person with Good Manners
As the saying goes, “Manners make the man.” As teenagers, what should we do to show good manners?
When we stay in public places, we should speak in a low voice and wait in line quietly. Never shout loudly or jump the queue in front of other people. At school, we need to greet teachers politely and get along well with all our classmates. We should warmly offer help to anyone who is in need around us. During meals, let elders eat first politely. Do not reach for food across the table and always remember to use clean serving chopsticks every day.
