My Priority of High School Spare-time Activities
As for high school spare-time life, I rank the three activities in this order: exercise, extensive reading and club activities.
Firstly, exercise tops my list. Good health is the foundation of efficient study, helping me stay energetic and relieve pressure. Secondly, extensive reading broadens my horizons and enriches my knowledge beyond textbooks. Finally, club activities come last. Though they build teamwork skills, I only take part in them in my free time.
In short, I balance these activities reasonably to enrich my school life.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1: The next morning, Mrs. Hale, Luna’s next-door neighbor, noticed her red eyes.
Concerned about the poor girl, Mrs. Hale knocked on Luna’s door and asked patiently what had happened. Unable to hold back her emotions, Luna poured out all her troubles, from the broken water heater to her confusion about the new surroundings. Feeling sorry for the lonely girl, the kind-hearted lady offered to help her solve the problems at once. She called a skilled worker to repair the water heater and took Luna around the community, showing her the locations of supermarkets, restaurants and bus stops. Warmth flooded Luna’s heart, driving away her long-time loneliness.
Paragraph 2: With their constant help, Luna gradually adapted to her new life.
Mrs. Hale often invited Luna to her home for dinner on weekends, and her grandchildren warmly welcomed Luna into their friend circle. At school, her new classmates were willing to study with her and share interesting daily stories. Luna became more outgoing and active. She no longer felt confused or lonely but enjoyed her busy and fulfilling school life. Deeply grateful for the kindness she had received, Luna made up her mind to pass on the warmth and help others in need in the future.

Coolest Inventions From the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show
Once again, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is upon us. This year is as sci-fi cool as always. We’ve chosen some to share with you.
Solar-powered tiny E.V.
On roads crowded with ever-bigger trucks and SUVs, Squad Mobility’s tiny solar-powered electric vehicle almost looks like a children’s toy. But the Solar City car is surprisingly comfortable. The car can go about 13 miles just on solar charge from its rooftop panel(板); it can also be plugged in like a regular E.V. The company hopes to begin production next year and plans to market the car at $6,250.
Targeted hearing device
People with hearing loss often talk about the difficulty in listening to a specific voice in a noisy space. OrCam Hear targets this issue with a system of ear buds(耳机) and an A.I.-powered app. The app samples voices and creates speaker profiles, which then allows users to choose which voice to pick out. Other voices and noise will be reduced. The company expects to begin production of the device later this year.
A powerful solar generator for emergencies
As extreme weather due to climate change increases, power failure are more and more common. The Delta Pro Ultra is a backup battery generator that runs on solar power, keeping houses powered in emergencies. At 186 pounds, it is portable enough to hit the road, powering R.V.s or tiny homes. The device went on sale earlier this month for $5,799.
A mental health mirror
How do you feel when you look in the mirror? Well, the BMind smart mirror can take one look and tell how you’re feeling, then offer “personalized mental health coaching” to help. The technology uses A.I. and natural language processing to analyze expressions and gestures. The mirror will be available by the end of the year for between $500 and $1,000.
21. Which is particularly tailored for people with disabilities?
A. A powerful solar generator.
B. Targeted hearing device.
C. Solar-powered tiny E.V.
D. A mental health mirror.
22. What feature do OrCam Hear and the BMind smart mirror share?
A. They are portable.
B. They are AI-powered.
C. They can generate voice.
D. They can be purchased now.
23. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To entertain. B. To advocate.
C. To inform. D. To promote.

Library Journal recently announced Mendocino County Library’s Round Valley Branch is the winner of its 2024 Best Small Library in America Award. This recognition honors the Round Valley library’s exceptional commitment to serving the unique needs of its community as a vital hub for sustainability, resiliency, and inclusivity.
Located in a remote part of northern California, the Round Valley library is a light of hope and community strength in an area challenged by isolation, economic hardship, and environmental vulnerability(脆弱). The town’s population has greatly benefited from the library’s efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment. “We’ve been really working hard to reach as many families as possible in this small community,” says Branch Librarian Josh Bennett.
The Round Valley library, located in the Library Commons is part of a community center that features a certified commercial kitchen, a meeting and community room, a café and a radio station. Despite its small size, the library offers a diverse range of programming for both adults and children. Friends of the Round Valley Public Library(FRVPL), a longstanding local nonprofit that supports the library, is featured in the Library Journal article that announces the award. “The FRVPL sponsors numerous programs that run independently of the County Library and contribute greatly to the success of the library branch. They are part of this award.” says Bennett. The library’s success is driven by its small yet dedicated staff of five employees and a passionate roster of volunteers. Together, they have built strong partnerships with local organizations and tailored services to meet the needs of the community.
“We understand the role of filling gaps in communities only continues to increase for libraries, especially for our friends at small and rural libraries,” says Carolyn Morris, Vice President of Ingram Library Services. “We are proud to help celebrate Round Valley library as Library Journal’s 2024 Best Small Library in America.”

In 2021, a heat wave baked the Pacific Northwest killing hundreds of people. Researchers reported that human-caused climate change made this heat wave at least 150 times more likely. But how do scientists figure out how much climate change is to blame for a specific weather event?
Researchers use a variety of techniques for this work, which is called extreme event attribution(归因). One method compares the world we have today with what the world would look like without climate change. Researchers estimate what that second world would look like based on historic trends in weather data and climate models. Scientists can then see if a specific weather event is more likely or severe in the real world than it would have been in a world without climate change.
Another technique uses computer models to recreate specific weather events. For instance, they might simulate(模拟)how powerful a hurricane would have been, if Earth’s oceans were slightly cooler. If the hurricane would not have been as intense, that would suggest all the heat added to Earth’s oceans by global warming made the real-life hurricane worse.
Many studies have investigated the role of global warming in natural disasters around the world. And many have found that climate change made these events more likely or more severe. And in some cases, scientists have determined that a weather event would have been virtually impossible without climate change.
Heat waves are fairly easy to tie to climate change, because we have lots of long-term temperature records from around the globe, and computer models simulate temperature well. It’s harder to pick out the fingerprints of climate change on heavy rainfall events in many parts of the world, because we have fewer long-term related records, and computer models have a harder time rendering this weather.
So we need more data and better models to better understand how climate change is affecting weather. This type of research can offer clues about the types of weather we should expect and prepare for as our world continues to warm.
28. Why does the author make comparison in paragraph 2?
A. To advocate studies. B. To stress the impact.
C. To explain an approach. D. To decide the trend.
29. What do we know about heatwaves from the passage?
A. They are more damaging. B. They are less predictable.
C. They cover a wider range. D. They get sufficient accounts.
30. What does the underlined word “rendering” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Recreate B. Predict C. Track D. Prevent
31. What suggestion does the author offer?
A. Intensify the capacity of data analysis.
B. Upgrade modeling devices continously.
C. Explore more types of weather modeling.
D. Have more expectation of global warming.

Women faculty(职员)are more likely to leave academia than men faculty throughout all career stages in U.S. universities, University of Colorado Boulder researchers revealed in the most comprehensive analysis of retention(留任)in academia to date.
The researchers found that a tough workplace climate, which can include feelings of not belonging, was the most common reason women left academia. This affects not only early-career professionals, but also those who have achieved the highest ranks in universities.
This finding helps to explain, in part, why women remain underrepresented among faculty in nearly all academic fields in the U.S., said Katie Spoon, the paper's first author. For example, only 28% of professors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields are women in the U.S., despite women receiving 40% of STEM PhDs for the past 10 to 15 years.
The researchers found women are leaving academia at a higher rate than men at every career stage, especially after they receive full professorship. During their appointment as assistant professors, women are 6% more likely to leave their jobs than men each year. The rate is higher among full professors, where women professors are 19% more likely to leave academia than men each year.
The team also surveyed more than 10,000 current and former faculty members for factors that led or could lead to their decision to leave a faculty job. The result showed women are more likely to feel pushed by a variety of factors out of their faculty positions, while men are more likely to be pulled toward more attractive jobs elsewhere.
"We see an emphasis on work-life balance among early career faculty members," said Clauset, the paper's corresponding author. "But the issue with workplace climate is the dominating factor among the women tenured professors, a position that lasts the majority of one's academic career."
The researchers hope their paper will inspire administrators nationwide to take action. "It can start with asking faculty, particularly women, what needs to be done, listening, and taking specific, concrete steps to address their concerns," Spoon said.
32. What is the function of paragraph 3?
A. To explain the reasons. B. To evidence the finding.
C. To defend previous studies. D. To offer possible assumption.
33. What does the finding imply about women in full professorship?
A. They undergo career pressures more.
B. Their sense of belonging are stronger.
C. They are overrepresented among faculty.
D. They are more likely to get attractive jobs.
34. What’s Clauset’s opinion toward the factor of work-life balance?
A. It deserves emphasis. B. It proves nonsense.
C. It is not the point. D. It is persuasive.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Equal payment should be guaranteed for women.
B. Men possess an advantage over women in academia.
C. Working women show less interest in academic career.
D. Terrible workplace climate pushes academic women out.

Tips for a good night’s sleep 原创
Most of us have suffered a bad night’s sleep at some stage or another. To help, we have come up with these top tips on how to get a good night’s sleep.
Avoid technology.
The bedroom should be somewhere that we associate with sleep. 36 It is better to watch TV, check social media and eat in another room. This will allow you to relax with no distractions in your bedroom. You should stop using electronics two hours before you go to sleep to reduce their impact on your sleeping.
37
We all know that having a routine helps babies and children fall asleep at a certain time. This applies to adults as well, because it allows your body to programme itself to naturally fall asleep and wake up at certain times. Try to be rigid about going to bed at a certain time, and create your own relaxation routine.
Focus on sleep quality.
38 However, sleep quality is just as important. We go through five stages of sleep, which we experience in a cycle, around five times a night. During the later stages of the cycle, information is processed. This means that getting up in the night can interrupt the cycle and you might not reach the later stages. For this reason, it’s also best to avoid having too many liquids before going to bed.
Darkness promotes sleep.
39 Similarly, a darkened room helps to promote sleep and turning the lights down can make you feel sleepy. Sometimes you may be disturbed by street lights outside your window, or bright sunlight at 5 am in summer. 40
A. Get into a routine.
B. Avoid fixed routine.
C. We tend to focus on how long we’re asleep.
D. Turning to certain electronics helps you sleep better.
E. You should try to remove distractions from your bedroom.
F. You could try heavier curtains or investing in blackout blinds.
G. People would wake up when the sun rose and go to sleep when it got dark

Luna White moved to a high school in a completely strange city alone last autumn. To guarantee convenient school attendance, she rented a small single apartment near the campus. Having left all her family and childhood friends in her hometown, she had no familiar people to turn to in this new place. The unfamiliar streets, strange neighborhood environment and different school routines all made her feel uneasy and lonely.
During the first few weeks, loneliness surrounded her all the time. She was shy and unconfident, afraid of talking to strangers and hesitant to communicate with her new classmates. After school, she always stayed alone in her narrow apartment, with no one to share her joy and trouble. To make things worse, a series of small accidents fell on her one cold evening. The water heater in her apartment suddenly broke down, leaving her without hot water on the chilly autumn day. Staying in the cold room, she had no idea how to fix it or who to ask for help.
Besides, she was still unfamiliar with the surrounding facilities. She wandered around for a long time but still failed to find the nearest supermarket to buy daily necessities. Tired and helpless, she finally slid down to the cold floor. Strong homesickness welled up in her heart, and tears of frustration rolled down her cheeks. She felt totally lost and worried that she could never adapt to life in this new city. As night fell, the quiet neighborhood seemed even lonelier. The cold wind blew gently through the window, making her feel even more lonely and abandoned. She missed the warm company of her family and old friends deeply, lying awake for a long time, trapped in helplessness and anxiety. She had never imagined that starting a new life in a strange city would be such a tough challenge for her.
