Most people can recall a time when they were in a bad mood after a long day at work and the barista (咖啡师) gave them a warm smile? Or maybe they overheard their bus-mate speaking German and ended up filling the morning commute (通勤) with a stimulating conversation about an upcoming trip? Strangers are around you most of the day, and what if you spend time interacting with them? A new approach urges just that.
The Atlantic examines the benefits of speaking to strangers by discussing the work of psychologist Gillian Sandstrom. She considered herself an introvert (内向的人) growing up. However, about a decade ago, she started experimenting with talking to strangers. It was awkward at the beginning, but eventually Sandstrom got better at making positive connections with or smiling at the people she passed every day, and it made her feel better.
Strangers represent possible relationships and interactions. If you take the time to drop a warm smile or a kind word to a stranger, at worst this interaction couldn’t be reciprocated. At best, you can sometimes have an extended conversation with a stranger, learn something interesting from them, or make a new friend.
Nicholas Epley, a psychologist at the University of Chicago conducted a study, in which participants spoke to strangers on public transportation during their morning commutes. Not only did the group speaking to strangers report having a more enjoyable commute, but conversations with seatmates lasted, on average, 14.2 minutes.
According to Epley, loneliness was one of the most dangerous social stressors and was even more physically harmful than overweight. “It’s larger than air pollution and it’s larger than physical activity and exercise,” he said. Making connections with those around us could ease loneliness and its harmful impacts.
Considering all the benefits of conversing with strangers, why not take advantage of being around people you don’t know? Flash a smile or start up a conversation, and you may make two persons’ day better.
24.Why does the author mention the examples in the first paragraph?
A.To show the value of a warm smile.
B.To find spots for talking with strangers.
C.To put forward the communication methods.
D.To introduce the topic of interactions with strangers.
25.What does the underlined word “reciprocated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Evaluated. B.Remembered.
C.Responded. D.Employed.
26.What can we learn from Epley’s study?
A.Most commuters tend to talk with strangers.
B.Physical activity helps to reduce loneliness.
C.Social interactions make participants less stressed.
D.Participants remove their negative emotions totally.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.Social interactions for stress relief.
B.Benefits of interacting with strangers.
C.Skills of getting along with strangers.
D.Importance of talks during commutes.

Esther Kimani, a 29-year-old pioneer in agritech, is changing the lives of smallholder farmers across Africa. As the founder of Farmer Lifeline Technologies (FLT), she has applied artificial intelligence (AI) to fight against crop pests (害虫) and diseases, significantly reducing losses for rural farmers.
Kimani's journey began in a small Kenyan village on the Aberdare Mountains. Witnessing firsthand the severe impact of pests and diseases on their crops — and consequently, their income — she understood early how agricultural losses could mean unmet basic needs like school fees and healthcare. Despite these challenges, Kimani became the first girl from her village to attend university, studying computer science. It was there that she recognized the potential of technology to solve rural farmers' struggles, and that's how FLT was born.
In Kenya alone,7.5 million smallholder farmers lose up to 50% of their yield (产量) to pests and diseases annually — losses that could feed millions. Traditional solutions like hiring agricultural consultants or using drones (无人机) are prohibitively expensive. To solve this critical issue, she developed an AI-powered camera, which is set up on farms at no upfront cost. It scans crops continuously and warns farmers through Short Message Service (SMS) for $3 per month when pests or diseases are detected.
A key focus for Kimani is supporting women farmers, who make up 43% of the agricultural labor force in developing nations, but who often lack access to technology. "Men in rural communities tend to have smartphones, while women rely on basic feature phones," she notes. "Through SMS, we ensure women aren't left behind."
Kimani's innovation has already impacted thousands of farmers, 78% of whom have reported a yield increase of over 36%. Her team aims to reach 200 thousand farms across the country within five years. For Kimani, success in 2030 means seeing 200 thousand smallholder farmers living with dignity — affording education, healthcare, and financial stability through improved yields. Kimani is not just building a company; she's reshaping the future of African agriculture.
28.Why did Kimani found FLT?
A.To fund rural farmers. B.To transform farming.
C.To expand AI industry. D.To research crop types.
29.How does the AI-powered camera help farmers?
A.By sending them timely warnings. B.By connecting them to consultants.
C.By controlling drones to scan crops. D.By driving pests away automatically.
30.What is an advantage of Kimani's innovation?
A.Equal access. B.Tailored service.
C.Large storage. D.Easy maintenance.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Financial policies affect agriculture. B.African agriculture will take the lead.
C.Kimani will pursue further education. D.Kimani's innovation powers a bright future.
D
This year, Amazon received critical headlines when reports questioned the “Just Walk Out” technology at its physical grocery stores. The AI-powered system enables customers to simply pick their items and leave, with the AI using numerous sensors to determine purchases and automatically bill customers. However, reports claimed it required 1,000 Indian workers to check many transactions (交易). Amazon dismissed this as false, saying the staff reviewed the system, a common AI practice to ensure reliability. This case highlights “AI washing”.
AI washing, similar to the concept of “green washing”, refers to companies making overstated claims about their use of AI. Some firms claim to use AI when they are actually using less-advanced computing methods. Others overstate the efficacy of their AI compared to existing techniques. According to OpenOcean, a UK-based investment fund, only 10% of tech start-ups mentioned using AI in their proposals in 2023. This number rose to more than a quarter in 2024 and is expected to exceed a third this year. The intense competition for funding and the desire to appear innovative have pushed some companies to exaggerate their AI capabilities.
The problem of AI washing has been quietly lingering for several years. In a 2019 study, OpenOcean found that 40% of new tech firms that described themselves as “AI start-ups” in fact used virtually no AI at all. Currently, many companies simply attach an AI chatbot onto their existing non-AI operating software, giving the false impression of advanced AI integration. The lack of a single, agreed-upon definition of AI further worsens this issue.
AI washing can have significant consequences. For businesses, it may lead to overpaying for technology and failing to meet operational goals. For investors, it becomes harder to identify truly innovative companies. And for consumers, unmet expectations from products claiming advanced AI can weaken trust in legal AI-driven start-ups. Regulators are starting to take action. The US government has already charged firms for false AI claims, and in the UK, relevant rules are in place. In the long run, as AI becomes more widespread, the problem of AI washing may decline naturally, as “AI-powered” will no longer be a unique selling point.
32.What did Amazon claim about the staff involved in the “Just Walk Out” technology in paragraph 1?
A.Their task was to check all transactions by hand.
B.They were mainly responsible for installing sensors.
C.They examine the system to guarantee its dependability.
D.They were proficient in AI and emphasized AI washing.
33.What can be inferred from the change in the percentage of tech start-ups from 2023 to 2024?
A.More start-ups actually developed real AI technology.
B.The competition for funding has made start-ups more innovative.
C.The quality of AI technology in start-ups has significantly improved.
D.The trend of AI washing has become more common among start-ups.
34.What is likely to happen in the future for AI washing?
A.Consumers will trust AI products more.
B.AI washing will boost real AI development.
C.Investors can easily detect valuable AI firms.
D.Companies using AI washing will face more legal risks.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.AI: A Selling Point B.AI Washing: A Rising Concern
C.AI: A Hidden Danger D.AI Washing: A Promising Technology

Does your teenager seem addicted to the Internet? Probably yes. 36 At first, parents welcome the Internet into their homes, believing they are opening up an exciting new world of educational chances for their children. 37 Instead of using the Internet for homework or research, they are spending hours messaging with friends, playing online games or talking to strangers in chat rooms.
Keeping a healthy balance between entertainment media and other activities in their children’s lives has always been a challenge for parents. The Internet has made this challenge even more difficult. 38
However, parents are usually not aware that there is a problem until it becomes serious. This is because it is easy to hide what you are doing online and Internet addiction is not widely recognized by the medical community.
Children and young people can easily become hooked on online activities such as multi-player games, instant messaging and chat rooms. The most vulnerable children are those who are unpopular or shy with peers. 39 Boys, in particular, are frequent users of online role-playing games, where they assume new identities and interact with other players. For the children who are not so outgoing, playing these games with thousands of other users may apparently be a social activity. 40 . So parents need to help children limit the online time to an appropriate amount.
A.That is especially obvious when it comes to online social games.
B.In fact, playing too much can further keep them away from friends and peers.
C.The amount of time teenagers spend online is a source of concern for many parents.
D.But numerous parents don’t discover this worrying situation and ignore it naturally.
E.However, many parents soon realize that their kids were gradually becoming Internet addicts.
F.The engaging nature of the Internet makes many children lose track of time when they’re online.
G.They can be easily attracted to the opportunities for creating new identities in online communities.

The cold weather forced the large red dog to bend into a tighter ball. Old Red lived outside Larry’s barbershop, sleeping on a small carpet. He had stayed there for a hot summer.
Old Red once had a friend—a black dog. But one night, his friend disappeared and Old Red was alone again. I always wished Old Red had his home. I would have adopted him in a minute. But we lived in a small apartment with our kids and we were unable to spare money for a dog’s medicine and food. I wondered who was feeding Old Red daily.
One day I found it out. “My husband even buys the most expensive food for Old Red,” Larry’s wife smiled. “He wants to bring him home, but his old mother living with us fears dogs extremely.” I then thanked Larry for his care. He brushed aside my thanks, insisting the dog meant nothing to him. During a snowstorm, Old Red disappeared. I asked Larry where he could be. “I’m glad he’s gone. He was a bother,” Larry said, busily cutting a customer’s hair. Later, his wife told me Larry was actually looking for the dog
On the third day, the dog reappeared. But I felt his nose: hot and dry. Bursting into the barbershop, I yelled, “Larry, Old Red is sick!” Larry replied, “I know. He won’t eat.”
I left the shop; for hours I tried to get someone to help Old Red, but in vain. My husband asked with pity, “Do you want me to go and look at that dog with you?” Quickly grabbing a blanket and antibiotics (抗生素) one of our children had been taking, we piled our kids in the car, driving to Larry’s shop. To my shock, Old Red was gone and couldn’t be found.
The next day I took the boys in for a haircut. Old Red was back, but looked worse than ever. After feeling his hot nose, I ran into the barbershop.

Text 1
M: Your hair looks different. Did you get it cut or something?
W: Cut? It isn’t shorter, it’s longer! I had extensions put in. I got tired of having hair to my shoulders, so I decided to make it really long.
Text 2
W: What did you use to do before you became a lecturer?
M: I used to edit books for a publishing house. I stopped doing that because the money they paid was chicken feed.
Text 3
M: Have you got your things ready? I’m almost done. I just need to put the passports into my carry-on.
W: I never know what to bring and always end up making a mess with my things.
Text 4
M: I’m having the painters do the outside of the house.
W: That was a good call. The house could go for a fresh coat of paint. Did they give you an estimate?
M: They are coming by to make measurements, and they’ll price the job later today.
Text 5
W: Sir, I am sorry, but you are sitting in someone else’s seat.
M: I’m sorry. I didn’t even notice.
W: Please hurry to your seat, so that we can prepare for take-off.
Text 6
W: Hey, ⑥⑦Billy! Are you ready for soccer tryouts after school?
M: Yeah, I worked hard at a gym this summer to get into shape for the season. ⑥But there are a lot of solid players trying out. So I might have a slight chance of making the team.
W: Come on! ⑦You were the most skilled player on the junior team last year and scored more goals than anyone. I see great potential in you. Plus, the coach told me last week that he needs a strong midfielder.
Text 7
W: ⑧What did you think of it then?
M: Well, normally I don’t like romantic films, especially old ones, ⑧but as this was filmed locally, I thought I’d watch it. And I was pleasantly surprised—it actually made me cry!
W: I still prefer the original. It’s a classic, and the main actors were just brilliant, much more believable than in this new version.
M: But this one uses excellent special effects and the music is listenable, ⑨even if the acting isn’t up to standard.
Text 8
W: ⑩⑪Ralph, I just wanted to express my appreciation for the photographs you took of our new menu items. ⑬Would you be able to email those to my secretary so our social media team can use them this Wednesday?
M: No problem, ⑫⑬Elsa. Which ones did you want me to send over?
W: I would really like all of them. Can you also make note of which restaurant location you were at, and the name and price of the menu item?
M: Well, ⑪I am a little concerned that the photos that are taken in the kitchen aren’t visually appealing for social media.
W: Hmm... Okay. I didn’t think about the photos taken in the kitchen. Maybe we shouldn’t use those.
M: Okay. ⑫But I am also not sure of the prices of the items, as they are different at each location.
W: ⑫I will take care of finding out about that. How does that sound?
M: That should solve all of my problems for now.
W: ⑬All the new menu items will be launched next Friday, right? Maybe we should wait to post the pictures until then.
M: That sounds like a great plan. It gives us more time to ensure everything is perfect.
Text 9
M: ⑭Why did you retire from athletics, Gemma?
W: I’d achieved several medals for coming second and third in world events and felt I had the ability to keep on going. And I had been lucky enough not to pick up too many injuries. But the truth was, ⑭I was fed up with living out of a suitcase all over the world for my job.
M: Fair enough. ⑮And was it easy to adjust to life after retirement?
W: Initially, no. And after I’d had a rest, I started applying for paid jobs. ⑮I needed something to do to distract me from thinking about the good things about being an athlete.
M: So was it easy with your background to find a job?
W: Not at all. ⑯When employers looked at my resume, there was no evidence that I was capable of doing the job they were advertising.
M: But eventually someone took you on and then five years later, you set up your own company to help retired sportspeople. Was the business an immediate success?
W: Not in the very early days. But I didn’t give up. I always had a reputation for being a strong person when I was an athlete. ⑰What kept me going most of all was the knowledge that my business would meet a real need.
Text 10
M: Hello everyone. Nowadays more and more people start a podcast channel. There are around 30 million podcast episodes out there, so making sure that your podcast draws in your listeners is more important than ever. Having engaging content throughout each show is essential. ⑲Studies have shown that podcasts lose 28 percent of listeners on average in the first five minutes, which is about 10 percent higher than the drop-off rate for the midsection of the episode. A great podcast opening should show new listeners who you are, what your podcast is about, and why they should listen. But, at the same time, it needs to engage your existing audience. The best podcast openings are unique to each episode and include a preview of later content. They often include special music or sound effects. Many also have some Call-To-Action remarks, such as “Follow us for daily tips and inspiration!” ⑳This could be encouraging listeners to follow you on the podcast platform.

根据划线词所在句“If you take the time to drop a warm smile or a kind word to a stranger, at worst (如果你花时间对陌生人报以温暖的微笑或说一句善意的话,最坏的情况)”可知,此处指对陌生人报以微笑或说善意的话,最坏的情况是得不到回应,由此推知,划线词reciprocated与responded意思相近,意为“回应”。故选C。

根据第三段最后一句“It scans crops continuously and warns farmers through Short Message Service (SMS) for $3 per month when pests or diseases are detected. (它持续扫描作物,并在检测到病虫害时通过短信服务(SMS)以每月3美元的费用向农民发出警告。)”可知,AI摄像头通过向农民发送及时警告来帮助他们。故选A项。
根据第四段“A key focus for Kimani is supporting women farmers, who make up 43% of the agricultural labor force in developing nations, but who often lack access to technology. "Men in rural communities tend to have smartphones, while women rely on basic feature phones," she notes. "Through SMS, we ensure women aren't left behind." (Kimani的一个关键重点是支持女性农民,她们占发展中国家农业劳动力的43%,但往往缺乏技术。她指出:“农村社区的男性往往拥有智能手机,而女性则依赖基本的非智能手机。”“通过短信,我们确保女性不会被遗忘。”)”可知,Kimani的创新确保了女性农民也能被纳入技术帮助的范围内,即体现了平等获取技术帮助的优势。故选A项。
根据最后一段前三句“Kimani's innovation has already impacted thousands of farmers, 78% of whom have reported a yield increase of over 36%. Her team aims to reach 200 thousand farms across the country within five years.

根据第二段中“According to OpenOcean, a UK-based investment fund, only 10% of tech start-ups mentioned using AI in their proposals in 2023. This number rose to more than a quarter in 2024 and is expected to exceed a third this year. The intense competition for funding and the desire to appear innovative have pushed some companies to exaggerate their AI capabilities.(根据英国投资基金OpenOcean的数据,2023年,只有10%的科技初创企业在提案中提到使用人工智能。这一数字在2024年升至超过四分之一,预计今年将超过三分之一。激烈的资金竞争和渴望显得创新,促使一些公司夸大其人工智能能力)”可知,从2023年到2024年,科技初创企业提及使用人工智能的比例大幅上升,这反映出“AI洗白”的趋势在初创企业中变得更加普遍。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Regulators are starting to take action. The US government has already charged firms for false AI claims, and in the UK, relevant rules are in place.(监管机构已经开始采取行动。美国政府已经指控一些公司虚假宣传人工智能,英国也制定了相关规则)”可推知,使用“AI洗白”的公司将面临更多的法律风险。故选D。
35.主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第二段中“AI washing, similar to the concept of “green washing”, refers to companies making overstated claims about their use of AI.(AI洗白,类似于“绿色洗白”的概念,指的是公司对其使用人工智能的情况夸大其词)”可知,文章主要讨论了“AI洗白”这一现象,即公司夸大其人工智能的使用情况,以及这一现象带来的问题、原因和可能的解决方式。

Looking at him, I said anxiously, “Larry. I’m afraid the dog is suffering too much.” The words slipped out of my mouth with a mix of frustration and desperation. Larry replied with inappropriate calmness, “I know, I haven’t seen him move all morning.” I couldn’t understand how Larry, who had cared for the dog all this time, could remain so indifferent to his fate. I then left the shop with a heavy heart. Driving home, my kids kept asking me whether Old Red would be okay. I nodded sympathetically, and we all prayed for him. One day later Larry’s wife called, “Guess what?” “After you left that day, Larry found a vet online,” she said and paused.
“Then the vet gave him a shot. He’s improving now.” Larry’s wife added excitedly. On hearing these words, I sighed with relief. I thanked her for the good news and joked, “Your husband is really sharp-tongued but tender-hearted.” With Larry’s continual help, Old Red’s tail wagged weakly again. Seeing Larry kneel beside the dog, gently offering him food, his mother, though initially fearful, was touched and softened. It was love that broke barriers, proving that compassion could melt even the coldest fears. From that day on, Old Red had not only just a carpet by the shop, but a home where he belonged—a testament to the power of kindness to transform lives.
