Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China's firstgeneration nuclear submarines (核潜艇), died in Wuhan at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025. He was widely known as the “father of China's nuclear submarines”.
Born in Guangdong Province in 1926, Huang saw that his country suffered from foreign attacks during his childhood. He decided to find a way to make his country stronger. He went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to build China's first nuclearpowered submarine. For the next 30 years, he hardly ever went home. At that time, none of the Chinese researchers had any knowledge in this field, and other countries were highly protective of such technologies.
So Huang and other researchers started by searching through newspapers and magazines for information. To make sure the results were correct, there were three groups to do the math at the same time and they would do the math again if the results were different. After years of hard work, China finally built its first nuclearpowered submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have nuclear submarines.
Huang's name remained secret for 30 years. Then in 1987, a magazine in Shanghai was allowed to publish a report giving only his family name. Because of his great contributions, he will always be remembered as a national hero.

Have you ever heard the saying “the quiet before the storm”? It means a quiet time before a busy or hard time arrives.
The saying was first used by fishermen. They found that just before a storm the sea and the air would be very quiet. Soon, the clouds would gather and they'd hear the first clap of thunder.
How does this happen? Let's see the science behind it!
Warm air goes up.
Warm air is lighter than the cooler air around it. Just before a storm, warm air near the ground begins to rise quickly.
Low pressure (气压) takes shape.
As the warm air goes up, carrying a lot of energy, it forms a lowpressure area near the ground.
Clouds build up.
At the same time, high up in the sky, the warm air cools and condenses into clouds. These clouds go on to build up, getting heavier and darker.
Storm arrives.
At last, this buildup of energy in the air makes the storm itself. The quiet ends as rain, wind, and thunder arrive.
So, when things become quiet, don't be fooled! Remember, this quiet doesn't last long. A big storm might be just around the corner. Nature always has its ways to surprise us!
9.( )Just before a storm, the fishermen found ____.
A.the sea would be scary B.the rain would be heavy
C.the clouds would build up D.the wind would blow strongly
10.( )The underlined word “it” refers to (指的是) ____.
A.the air B.the wind
C.the quiet D.the cloud
11.( ) From the text, which picture can show how the storm happens?
12.( ) What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Buildup of the Clouds. B.The Arrival of the Storm.
C.The Quiet before the Storm. D.The Moving of Warm Air.

四、阅读与表达(共4小题,41~43小题,每小题2,44小题4;共10)
I am Peter. My elder brother is Hywel. Last year, our dad gave us $300 each. “It's not your pocket money,” he said. “Don't spend it on sweets or similar things. Try to make more money with that $300. And before you use the money, you should tell me and your mom what you're going to do with it.”
Hywel acted quickly with a great idea. He spent all $300 buying drones and resold them online. In six months, he made a profit(利润)of $260—that's a lot of money!
“I also spent some of the profit,” Hywel admitted, smiling happily. “I like both investing and spending! I bought clothes and stuff for myself!”
What should I do? I decided to follow the example of a winner. I first invested (投资)$100 of my money in my brother's drone business. Of course, he could keep a small part of my profit. “I'm good at managing money,”I remembered telling my dad. “Therefore, I made plans to invest the rest in currencies (货币). I'm not going to tell you any more, because how I made money is a top secret.”
Dad has taught us important financial lessons since then. He always tells us, “Learn to manage your money, or it will manage you.” This isn't something that we can learn at school. News shows that a quarter of UK teens leave secondary school (around 16) without basic financial knowledge. I think we need to change that.
41.What did Peter and Hywel's dad tell them not to spend the $300 on?
