B Vivian learned to read and write English at just two years old before her family moved to PEI, Canada, where she attended a public school. Vivian says her love for learning came from her grandmother, a high school biology teacher. “She taught me at a very young age. We’d go to the park and she would make up a game and I wouldn’t even know that I was learning,” she tells the local newspaper Charlottetown Guardian. Vivian hoped for grade-skipping due to her excellence in all subjects. Her parents have been supportive of her drive to seek knowledge. However, the school officials were concerned that she wouldn’t keep up socially with her older classmates if she were to skip more than one grade. Then, she wrote to the newspaper. “Imagine you are playing an exciting video game. You defeat the boss and are ready to move on to the next stage. However, you discover that the game requires you to wait until every other player has finished. Imagine the boredom you would experience and the loss of desire to play afterwards,” she wrote in the letter. “In our current educational system, this is how it works. Kids should be allowed to fly when they’re ready.” Vivian moved with her family from PEI to Halifax, and at a private school there, after several tests, teachers placed her in Grade 8 from fourth grade. After a brief high school career in British Columbia, she returned to PEI to attend university, where she hoped to gain the skills to become a veterinarian (兽医). Vivian was just 12 when she began her university studies — and is on track to finish a biology degree before she can get behind the wheel of a car. So far, university has been no sweat for Vivian. She finished her first semester with grades above 91 percent. Now, at 13, she has just wrapped her first year at the University of Prince Edward Island. 24. How did Vivian’s grandmother educate her at a young age? A. She led her to study unconsciously. B. She set a good example for her. C. She was supportive of her choices. D. She forced her to learn from childhood. 25. Why did Vivian mention playing a video game in her letter? A. To illustrate an idea. B. To clarify a concept. C. To propose a solution. D. To make an assumption. 26. What was Vivian’s purpose in moving from PEI to Halifax? A. To get her biology degree. B. To study as a veterinarian. C. To skip grades successfully. D. To stick to her hobby freely. 27. What lesson can we learn from Vivian’s story? A. Learning at an early age can be harder. B. School systems should be more flexible. C. Self-acceptance depends on self-pride. D. School education equals home studying. C Last year, the world lost more forests than ever before, according to researchers from the University of Maryland and the World Resources Institute (WRI) that released their latest report on the world’s forests. The report shows that the world lost about 25,870 square miles of primary rainforest last year. That’s almost double the amount that was lost the year before last. It wasn’t just rainforests that disappeared more rapidly last year. Due to strong wildfire seasons in Canada and Russia, the world’s total tree cover loss increased by 5% last year compared to the year before last. In all, the world lost 115,830 square miles of forests last year. That’s an area roughly the size of Italy. According to WRI, last year, for the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause of forest loss. Fires caused almost half of the total loss. That’s a huge problem, because forest fires add to the pollution that causes global warming. Airplane travel is one of the world’s biggest sources of greenhouse gases. But last year, the amount of pollution released by forest fires was over four times greater than the pollution from all the world’s airplane travel the year before last. The second biggest cause of forest loss was clearing land for farming, including growing crops and raising animals. The amount of land cleared for farming shot up by 14% last year. That’s the biggest increase in 10 years. In 2021, the leaders of 140 countries signed an agreement to stop forest loss and begin increasing forest area by 2030. However, that’s not happening. WRI says that 17 of the 20 countries with the most primary forests are losing more forests now than when they signed the agreement. Brazil has the most tropical rainforest in the world. But last year, it also had the most forest loss. It was responsible for 42% of the world’s total loss of primary forest. WRI says that to meet the goal of ending forest loss by 2030, the world will need to lower its forest losses by 20% every year. It’s high time to work together. 28. What are the statistics in paragraph 2 used to show about forest loss? A. Its location. B. Its reasons. C. Its varieties. D. Its severity. 29. Why does the author mention airplane travel? A. To explain global warming. B. To praise its eco-achievements. C. To prove WRI’s previous point. D. To emphasize forest fires’ effects. 30. What can be inferred about the 2021 agreement? A. It has been quitted by some countries. B. It has been carried out unsuccessfully. C. It has been preventing farming growing. D. It has been getting more and more promising. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Forests Declined at a Record Pace B. Climate Change Causes Forest Loss C. Primary Rainforest Struggled to Live D. Wildfires Are Driving Global Warming D A new study from Johns Hopkins University shows that humans are much better than today’s AI models at understanding social interactions in dynamic scenes. “AI for a self-driving car, for example, would need to recognize the intentions, goals, and actions of human drivers and pedestrians (行人). You’d want it to know which way a pedestrian is about to start walking, or whether two people are in conversation instead of about to cross the street,” said lead researcher Leyla Isik. “Any time you want AI to interact with humans, you want it to be able to recognize what people are doing. But this study discovers the fact that these systems can’t right now.” To determine how AI models measure up compared to human perception (认知), the researchers had human participants watch three-second videos and rate features important for understanding social interactions. The videos included people either interacting with one another or performing side-by-side activities. The researchers then asked more than 350 AI language, video, and image models to prognosticate how humans would judge the videos and how their brains would respond to watching the videos. Participants mostly agreed with each other on all the questions; the AI models, regardless of size or the data they were trained on, did not. For example, video models couldn’t state what people were doing in the videos. Language models did better at predicting human behavior, but none could match how humans understand dynamic social scenes. The results provide a sharp contrast to AI’s success in reading still images. The study suggests a big reason: Current AI is built to process still images, like recognizing objects or faces. “It’s not enough to just see an image and recognize objects and faces. That was the first step, which took us a long way in AI. But real life isn’t still. We need AI to understand the story that is unfolding in a scene. Understanding the relationships, context, and dynamics of social interactions is the next step, and this research suggests there might be a blind spot in AI model development,” researcher Kathy Garcia said. 32. What is Isik’s attitude to AI being used now for a self-driving car? A. Uncaring. B. Tolerant. C. Disapproving. D. Favorable. 33. What does the underlined word “prognosticate” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Explain. B. Predict. C. Prove. D. Compare. 34. What did the experiment find about AI models’ performance? A. Human insight did not beat language AI. B. Visual AI often outperformed language AI. C. Video AI failed to identify people’s actions. D. Most AI models always judged consistently. 35. Which statement may Kathy Garcia agree with? A. The AI blind spot is quite unimportant. B. Simple face recognition is enough for AI. C. AI will match human abilities very soon. D. AI must comprehend dynamic social plots. The holiday season is an ideal time to spread joy among the people who live near you. Here are some simple and thoughtful ways to help your neighbors. 36 Little acts of kindness, especially during the holidays, can have a larger impact than you might expect. Stopping to talk with a younger neighbor who looks up to you can leave a positive impression on someone’s day. Taking the time to say hello to a neighbor is a simple but kind gesture. 37 Share a home-made gift. Many people like to show their appreciation for their neighbors at the holidays by sharing a small gift. For example, with an adult’s help, you can make cookies, put a few in a gift bag, and give them to your neighbor. 38 You could also draw a picture for them or deliver a home-made holiday greeting card to them. Offer to help. Your neighbors might appreciate your offer to assist with housework. 39 Stop by with an adult and ask if you can help refill their bird feeder, or bring in their recycling containers. Check in. Many people have family to spend the holidays with, but some neighbors who live alone might be feeling a little lonely at this time of year. 40 While you’re there, you can ask them if they need anything. Another idea to discuss with your family is inviting a few neighbors to a holiday “open house” where you can share treats, a warm drink, and conversation. A. Start small. B. Volunteer to help neighbors. C. You will learn to appreciate what you’ve done. D. Visit their home to offer season’s greetings with a parent. E. You can also carry grocery bags or packages for an older person. F. You can include a note that says, “We hope these treats bring holiday smiles!” G. This is especially true for the elderly or parents who are busy looking after a baby. A stray (流浪) dog lived a lonely life beside a winding country road, largely overlooked by passers-by. It was a warm morning in June; she was just settling into her new job as a manager’s assistant, still nervous about her probation period (试用期), and often felt a touch of homesickness in her small rented apartment near the workplace. Little did she know that a small decision she had made two years earlier would soon become a ray of hope for a stranger. Two years ago, while volunteering at a blood drive on her university campus, Eluned learned about stem cell (干细胞) donation. Curious and eager to help, she filled out a form agreeing to donate and provided a small sample from the inside of her cheek, joining the global donor pool without overthinking it. At the time, she merely thought it was a simple way to lend a hand, never expecting it to amount to anything more. She never imagined that her tissue matching profile would one day match a patient in desperate need — a 17-year-old boy named Roscoe suffering from a severe blood cancer. When the donor center informed her of the match, Eluned felt a mix of shock and hesitation. She worried about taking a long leave during probation, fearing she might lose her job, as she had worked hard to land the position. Her parents, who lived in Wales, were also concerned, urging her to reconsider it. But after learning that Roscoe had no matching relatives and her donation was his only chance, she made up her mind. Eluned planned to ask her boss, Mr Harlow, for a 10-day leave. She spent the night before anxiously practicing what to say, fearing that her request would be rejected. Yet she knew she couldn’t turn her back on the boy whose life depended on ber. Then, she went to Mr Harlow and spoke out her request for a 10-day leave. Seeing Mr Harlow’s serious look, Eluned’s heart sank. After Mr Harlow learned about the truth from Eluned, his words moved her. W:OK.I'll do that after doing the dishes.
