On a cold Tuesday morning, ten-year-old Ada was almost late for school. The night before, she stayed up designing her block-collecting machine to clean up her little brother’s messy building blocks. As she rushed to put on her coat, the zipper pull (拉链头) broke.
“What should I do?” Ada thought. She saw a clip (回形针) on her desk. She bent it and solved the problem. A smile appeared on her face as she left home.
The sidewalk was covered by ice. Ada almost fell. “I need special shoes for ice,” she said to herself. Right now, she had an idea. She ran back inside, found two of her father’s thick socks, and put them over her shoes. They looked funny, but she walked safely to school.
At school, another problem came. During the break, her friend Fiona cried out, “The gum (口香糖) is stuck in my hair!” The class thought of ways-ice, salad cream... but Ada had a better idea. She put some peanut butter on Fiona’s messy hair. The gum soon became soft and Ada got it out easily. Fiona smelt like peanut butter, but who minded that? Fiona said at lunch, “Ada, you saved my day. My hair is free now!”
After school, Grandma bought her a cup of hot chocolate and drove her home. There were no cup holders in the car. Ada put her cup in her shoe. “Honey, you see solutions everywhere,” Grandma laughed.
At home, she noticed her cat playing with a ball of yarn (纱线), making a mess. Ada saw a small bottle on the kitchen table. She put the yarn ball inside, pulled a piece of yarn through the small hole, and hung the bottle on the wall. The cat couldn’t reach it anymore.
Her dad praised her, “You are born to be an inventor, but I have no time for inventing.” Ada smiled, “...”

What do cutting food and building planes have in common? Both of them use one powerful force: pressure.
There are several types of pressure, but they all share the same law: a force acts on a surface. The smaller the surface area, the greater the pressure produced by the same force. We experience different forms of pressure in everyday life—mechanical pressure, when we press on an object; atmospheric pressure, when air pushes on everything around us; and hydrostatic pressure (静水压力), when it acts within water, such as the strong pressure deep in the sea.
Now picture yourself stepping onto a snowy place. In ordinary shoes, you would go down into the snow immediately. But this won’t happen once you put on skis (滑雪板). It’s because your body weight is spread over a bigger area. The pressure becomes less, so the snow can support you. Cutting food with a knife works the same way.
Without an understanding of how pressure works, it would be impossible to build a plane. A plane wing’s top surface is curved (弧形的). When a plane moves, air moves around its wing. The airflow (气流) over the wing speeds up because of its special shape. As a result, the pressure above the wing becomes lower than the pressure below it. The pressure difference creates an upward force called lift. This force balances the plane’s weight and allows it to stay in the air.
In water, pressure increases with depth. When we build a dam (大坝), we make it wider and thicker at the bottom to hold back higher pressure from deep water.
Pressure is one of the key forces shaping the world around us. By understanding its nature, we have learned to build machines that can fly into the sky and dive into the ocean, measure the heights of mountains, and explore outer space.
19. What is pressure according to the text?
A. A kind of surface area. B. A force on a surface area.
C. The total size of a surface. D. A force with no surface area.
20. Which one is reasonable if the force is unchanged? (x= Surface area; y= Pressure)
A. B. C. D.
21. Which activity is about atmospheric pressure?
A. Cutting food. B. Skiing on snow. C. Building a dam. D. Making a plane.
22. Why is the text written?
A. To teach some useful living skills. B. To explain different kinds of pressure.
C. To introduce pressure and its influence on us. D. To expect readers to develop new technologies.
D
Have you ever thought of forests as the Earth’s lungs (肺)? They take in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and give us the fresh oxygen (氧气) we need to live. But our green friends are at risk because the climate is changing and people are cutting down trees excessively (过度). Luckily, technology is stepping in to help! Welcome to the amazing world of “Smart Forests”, where modern technology works with nature to keep our planet safe.
So, how do forests become “smart”? Imagine placing small listening tools and sensors (传感器) at the tops of the trees. These smart tools listen to the sounds of the woods day and night. If they hear the loud noise of a dangerous tool cutting down trees or the sound of a forest fire breaking out, they will send a quick alert to forest workers. They even listen to bird songs and animal calls to make sure wildlife is safe and healthy.
Technology also brings some amazing flying helpers: drones (无人机)! These small flying machines fly high above the trees, taking pictures to check if forests are healthy. If drones see an empty area where trees have been cut down, the smart system will study the soil and weather to find out exactly which seeds (种子) should be planted there. Then, special drones can fly over and carefully drop seeds into the ground to grow a whole new forest.
By acting as the eyes and ears of the woods, “Smart Forests” is changing the way we protect the environment. It provides a practical way to protect forests and help them recover better with the power of modern technology.
23. What problems put forests in trouble?
A. No listening tools and good sensors. B. Lack of technology and seed shortage.
C. Forest fires and wildlife disappearance. D. Climate change and too much tree cutting.
24. What does the underlined word “alert” refer to in the text?
A. A message to show love and care. B. A warning of danger or problems.
C. A piece of information about the forest. D. A friendly reminder to check the weather.
25. What is the writer’s attitude towards “Smart Forests”?
A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
26. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Forests Are Disappearing Fast? B. Drones: The Future of Flying Machines
C. How Scientists Study Animals and Plants? D. Smart Forests: Technology Is Protecting Nature

【1】About 2300 years ago, the area around Chengdu had bad floods (洪水) in spring every year. Flood water from the mountains flowed (流动) down the Minjiang River and covered the land. Luckily, the Qin governor (太守), Li Bing, was a water engineer. The king of Qin provided the money and asked the governor to solve the problem.
【2】(5)The usual method to avoid flooding is to build a wall across the river, called a dam (大坝). Special openings in the dam allow the flow of water to be controlled. However, the king had also asked Li Bing to make sure that ships could still use the river. This was necessary because the king needed to send food to his army. So Li Bing studied the situation and came up ①________ a plan—a plan that still works today!
【3】Helped by his son, and tens of thousands of workers from the area, Li Bing built a man-made island in the middle of the river. This island was shaped like a fish and it divided the water ②________ an inner and an outer river. The inner river was deeper than but not as wide as the outer river. It took four years to build the island.
【4】Li Bing also cut a new channel (运河) through Mount Yulei. This channel would take water away to irrigate (灌溉) the land in the flat farmland below. The rock of the mountain was very hard and difficult to cut. Li Bing used fire to heat the rock and then water to cool it quickly. This made the rock break into smaller pieces which could be carried away more easily. Cutting the channel took eight years!
【5】After Li Bing’s work was ③________, there were no more floods, and the Dujiangyan irrigation system (灌溉系统) allowed the farmers to grow more and more food. The river flowed naturally, and because there was no dam, ships and fish could pass freely. Sichuan became the most productive area in China, as it still is today. The Role of Technology in My Learning
With its rapid development, technology has played an increasing role in our learning. It offers rich learning resources and makes study far more efficient. With educational apps and AI tools, we can learn anywhere and anytime, even after class. For example, AI quickly helps solve difficult problems and explain knowledge points. However, overusing technology harms our eyesight and reduces our ability to focus. Personally, I think we should use it properly. We need to control screen time, focus on real communication with teachers and classmates, and not depend on it completely. Technology is just a tool, not a master. Let’s use it wisely to achieve better grades and stay healthy.
