Health First, Sports for All
To promote students’ physical and mental health, our school has launched a new sports plan under the theme “Health First, Sports for All.”
Every student is encouraged to master at least one sport. Class leagues and school leagues have been organized, and rooftops have been turned into “sky playgrounds”, where we jump rope, play ball, and enjoy climbing activities during breaks. The whole campus is full of energy.
The plan has brought great changes to my classmates. Many have become more energetic and focused in class. Some who used to avoid exercise now look forward to every break on the playground. Most importantly, we are developing a lifelong habit of staying active — a true gift for our health.

When he finally reached the shore, he called emergency services, saying “I need helicopters, I need boats, my family’s out at sea.” The call started a huge 6 . Minutes later, Austin’s mother, his brother Beau, 12, and his sister Grace, 8, were 7 . A rescue boat was directed to them and all three were rescued.
Austin was still trying to 8 what happened even five days later. Despite what people kept telling him, he 9 didn’t see himself as a hero. Meanwhile, authorities publicly praised the boy for his courage, determination and clear-headed actions.

When my children were little, they merrily went along on our travels. But around age 10, my son made it clear, “I don’t really like to travel.” It broke my heart.
My daughter caught the travel bug early, but my son showed little enthusiasm — whether in Barcelona, the Louvre, or even a trip to see white whales. Still, I kept pushing. Before my daughter left for college, I proposed one last family trip. The rest of the family voted for Egypt. My son suggested we stay home. I bribed (贿赂) him with more screen time, and he agreed.
Egypt turned out to be the destination that clicked. At the Grand Egyptian Museum, my son — who usually speedwalked through museums — stopped. He read the information cards and stayed over artifacts. My husband and I kept quiet, afraid to break the spell. At the Temple of Karnak, he listened attentively as our guide explained its history. At the Valley of the Kings, he stood fascinated in Tutankhamun’s burial tomb, recalling what he’d learned in ninth grade. Watching our son discover that maybe travel wasn’t so bad after all, I suddenly realized what had been wrong all along.
I had been dragging him through my version of travel — the Mona Lisa, Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter — experiences viewed through my camera. But my son needed something to attract him, a tale he could follow and historical contexts he could connect with what he’d learned.
Our Egypt trip taught me that not all kids love travel the same way. My daughter gets great pleasure from aesthetic (审美的) experiences; my son needs a connection he can make. I’m glad I let go of my own travel dreams long enough to figure out what might fuel my children’s curiosity. Egypt worked for my son because it is consistent with who he is as a learner at this moment in his life. Maybe your unwilling traveller doesn’t hate travel — they’re just waiting for you to help them find their version of it.
24.What did the author do to persuade her son to join the Egypt trip?
A.She promised to buy him a gift. B.She let him choose the destination.
C.She told him about the white whales. D.She granted him extra screen time.
25.Why did the author and her husband keep quiet in the museum?
A.They were busy taking pictures. B.They feared to interrupt their son.
C.They were too surprised to speak. D.They wanted to focus on the guide.
26.What do we know about the author’s son?
A.He was drawn to natural landscapes.
B.He preferred traveling without a set plan.
C.He was keen on trips linked to his prior knowledge.
D.He was fond of historical and artistic experiences.
27.What is the main lesson the author learned from the Egypt trip?
A.Travel should be tailored to children.
B.Historical trips cater to unwilling travelers.
C.Kids can outgrow their dislike of travel eventually.
D.Parents can pursue their own passions regardless.
【答案】24.D 25.B 26.C 27.A

Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed an innovative ultrasonic (超声) system that can extract water from an atmospheric (大气层的) water harvester in just minutes. The new approach could help ease global water shortages, especially in dry regions where clean water is hard to obtain.
Scientists have long explored atmospheric water harvesting, a method that collects water directly from the air, even in desert environments. The idea is promising because air contains water vapour almost everywhere. Traditional systems, however, usually depend on solar heat to release the water held by a special absorbent material. As team leader Boriskina explained, materials that are effective at capturing water are often reluctant to release it. As a result, the process can take hours, making it difficult to respond to urgent needs in water-scarce areas.
To solve this problem, Boriskina brought in Ikra Shuvo, an MIT graduate student whose research focuses on ultrasound technology for wearable medical devices. Boriskina believed that combining Shuvo’s knowledge of ultrasound with the team’s experience in water-harvesting materials might lead to a faster and more practical way of recovering water.
Ultrasound consists of high-frequency sound waves that can create tiny vibrations (震动) in a substance. Based on this principle, the team proposed a simple solution: use ultrasound to break the weak bonds between the captured water molecules and the material. Once those bonds are loosened, the water quickly separates and falls out as droplets. Compared with heat-based methods, this process is much faster and wastes less energy.
The researchers then built an ultrasonic water-harvesting device. The system does not rely on heat, though it does require an external power source. A solar cell can power the device and also serve as a sensor, signalling when the absorbent material has reached capacity. The system is programmed to switch on automatically when enough water has been captured. Compared with heat-based methods, it is 45 times more energy-efficient, works without direct sunlight, and can operate repeatedly throughout the day to produce more water. These advantages make it suitable for remote dry regions, where it could provide a steady supply of clean water and offer a greener alternative to energy-intensive methods such as seawater desalination (脱盐).
More broadly, this work highlights the value of combining ultrasound technology, materials science, and environmental engineering. Such cross-disciplinary cooperation may open up new ways to solve water shortages in some of the world’s driest regions. Ultimately, this breakthrough could one day bring clean water to millions living in arid regions.
28.What can we learn about traditional water harvesting methods according to Boriskina?
A.They use waterproof materials. B.They require complex facilities.
C.They are difficult to manufacture. D.They have low efficiency in water output.
29.The new device is suitable for remote dry regions partly because it can .
A.work without direct sunlight B.store rainwater for dry seasons
C.operate without external power D.produce fresh water from seawater
30.What mainly accounts for the team’s technological breakthrough?
A.Pressing water demand.
B.Interschool academic exchanges.
C.Boriskina’s exceptional leadership.
D.Integration of multiple scientific fields.
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.D

【解析】
28.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“As team leader Boriskina explained, materials that are effective at capturing water are often reluctant to release it. As a result, the process can take hours, making it difficult to respond to urgent needs in water-scarce areas. (正如团队负责人Boriskina所解释的,善于吸水的材料往往不愿意释放水分。因此,这个过程可能需要数小时,难以满足缺水地区的紧急需求。)”可知,Boriskina认为传统方法由于材料吸水易但放水难,导致取水过程耗时很长,效率低下。
29.细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Compared with heat-based methods, it is 45 times more energy-efficient, works without direct sunlight, and can operate repeatedly throughout the day to produce more water. These advantages make it suitable for remote dry regions, where it could provide a steady supply of clean water and offer a greener alternative to energy-intensive methods such as seawater desalination (脱盐). (与基于热量的方法相比,它的能源效率高出45倍,无需阳光直射即可工作,并且可以全天反复运行以产生更多水。这些优势使其适合偏远干旱地区,可为当地稳定供给洁净水源,同时相比海水淡化等高能耗制水方式,提供了一种更环保的替代方案。)”可知,新设备适合偏远干旱地区的部分原因是它无需阳光直射即可工作。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“More broadly, this work highlights the value of combining ultrasound technology, materials science, and environmental engineering. Such cross-disciplinary cooperation may open up new ways to solve water shortages in some of the world’s driest regions. Books were stamped with “Human Authored” logos (标识) at this week’s London Book Fair. The Society of Authors described its labelling as “an important logo to protect and promote human creativity instead of AI labelled content in the marketplace.”
Visitors to the fair were also given copies of Don’t Steal This Book, a collection of 10,000 writers including Nobel winner Kazuo Ishiguro and Richard Osman, in which the pages are completely blank. The back cover states: “The UK government must not legalize book theft to benefit AI companies.”
The empty book is a protest against AI companies using copyrighted works without permission or payment to train their models — and against UK government proposals that could legalize this practice. Organized by Ed Newton-Rex, a composer and copyright campaigner, the project has drawn vast support from the literary world. The AI industry is “built on stolen work” “This is a crime that has victims,” he added, “Generative AI competes with the creators of the works it trains on, taking away their livelihoods.”
The protest comes just a week before the UK government is due to publish an economic impact assessment of proposed changes to copyright law. The government initially proposed a system, under which AI firms could use copyrighted material unless rights holders refused permission — an exact opposite of copyright law’s core principle. Only 3% of people surveyed backed the plan. The government dropped it but is now considering a “commercial research exception” that would still allow AI companies to use works without approval for commercial training.
For the authors behind Don’t Steal This Book, the blank pages are a powerful symbol: they represent the future of writing if AI companies continue to use creative work without payment — a world where authors are left with nothing. As the Society of Authors put it, the empty book is “a stopgap measure” — but the real solution is a copyright system that protects human creativity, not commercial greed.
31.Why were the books stamped with “Human Authored” logos?
A.To show public sympathy for authors. B.To fight AI’s stealing copyrighted works.

A.Ordinary readers. B.Literary promotion campaigns.
C.Human writers. D.Generative AI models.
33.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The protest weakening UK’s economy.
B.Copyright law enjoying public support.
C.AI firms prioritizing commercial profits.
D.The UK government favoring AI companies.
34.How does the Society of Authors view the empty book?
A.It is a band-aid fix B.It stands the test of time.
C.It is a game changer. D.It works once and for all.
【答案】31.B 32.C 33.D 34.A
【导语】主要介绍伦敦书展推出人类原创标识与空白抗议书籍,反对AI未经授权盗用作品,以及英国政府相关版权政策的争议。
【解析】31.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The Society of Authors described its labelling as “an important logo to protect and promote human creativity instead of AI labelled content in the marketplace.”(英国作家协会将该标识描述为保护和弘扬人类创作力、抵制市场中AI标注内容的重要标识。)”可知,加盖“Human Authored”标识是为了抵制AI盗用受版权保护的作品。
32.词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“The AI industry is “built on stolen work” “This is a crime that has victims,” he added, “Generative AI competes with the creators of the works it trains on, taking away their livelihoods.”(人工智能行业建立在被盗用的作品之上,这一行为存在受害者;生成式AI与被训练作品的创作者竞争,夺走了他们的生计。)”可知,AI盗用创作作品损害了人类作家的权益,因此,画线单词指代“人类作家”。
33.主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“The government initially proposed a system, under which AI firms could use copyrighted material unless rights holders refused permission — an exact opposite of copyright law’s core principle. (英国政府最初提出一项制度,除非版权所有者拒绝,否则AI公司可使用版权作品,这与版权法核心原则完全相悖。)”可知,第四段主要讲述英国政府出台相关政策倾向于偏袒AI公司。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段中的“As the Society of Authors put it, the empty book is “a stopgap measure” — but the real solution is a copyright system that protects human creativity, not commercial greed.(英国作家协会表示,这本空白书籍只是一项临时补救措施,真正的解决办法是建立保护人类创作力而非商业贪欲的版权制度。)”
Small Talk: More Than Just Chit-Chat
People often complain about small talk, describing it as “painful” or “dishonest”. 35 However, this common opinion fails to recognize the true value of small talk in our daily interactions.
As a matter of fact, small talk serves as an essential social “safety zone”. 36 According to etiquette expert Lizzie Post, discussing light topics like hobbies or recent events establishes initial harmony. This foundation makes it easier to transition to more substantial conversations later, whether in a work setting or a new friendship.
Some argue that small talk is boring, but this often reflects poor communication skills rather than a flaw in the activity itself. Effective small talk requires genuine engagement. 37 This means putting away your phone, making eye contact, and actively turning into the other person’s reactions. If they lean in and smile at a topic, you can explore it further; if they glance away or give short answers, politely shift to a new topic or invite them to share their own perspective.
38 During a two-hour flight, I began with simple talk about travel plans with my seatmate. Gradually, both of us felt more comfortable opening up to each other. This casual start eventually led to a meaningful discussion about life changes and personal growth. We reached this depth precisely because we started with accessible, low-pressure topics.
Small talk isn’t about being superficial — it’s a practical social tool that facilitates human connection. 39 In fact, it smooths our daily social encounters and opens doors to deeper conversations that might never occur otherwise. Without these simple, everyday exchanges, our social interactions would feel much more awkward and less satisfying.
A.Its value, however, is often overlooked.
B.It demands full presence and careful observation of the other person.
C.They generally claim it lacks depth and avoids meaningful topics.
D.Consider this real-life example from my own experience.
E.Good small talk depends on more than just the words you say.
F.Without proper skills, small talk can feel shallow and forced.
G.It creates a comfortable atmosphere before deep conversations begin.

(事实上,闲聊能让我们日常的社交往来变得顺畅,还为深入交流创造契机,倘若没有闲聊,这些深度对话原本无从发生)”进一步阐述其实际作用。空处应与上文正面论述形成对比,再由下文转折回正面。A选项“Its value, however, is often overlooked.
In the early 1990s, Holly Deiaco-Smith, a 19-year-old girl, boarded a plane to France, where she would spend a year studying abroad.
Within a few weeks of arriving in France, though, her excitement turned into an overwhelming sense of isolation and loneliness. Navigating day-to-day life in a new country was much harder than she expected it to be, especially when it came to speaking French.
Constantly fighting to be understood was emotionally exhausting. The only thing getting her through was the knowledge that a little piece of home was on the way.
“My mom had sent me Skippy peanut butter, which, at that point, I could not find anywhere in France. So this was really exciting for me.” Deiaco-Smith recalled.
Deiaco-Smith had to go to the post office to pick up the package. When she arrived, she tried to tell the attendant why she was there. But the attendant didn’t speak any English and couldn’t understand Deiaco-Smith’s accent when she spoke in French.
“The more I repeated myself, the more frustrated I got and the more hopeless I felt. I was about ready to break down in tears, when in walked my unsung hero.”
The person who came to Deiaco-Smith’s rescue was a French woman named Chantal Jouve.
“She stepped in and she looked at me and said, in English, ‘Can I help you?’ And she spoke to the attendant, and within two minutes, the package was in my hands.”
After helping her get the package, Jouve invited Deiaco-Smith to her house for dinner the following Sunday.
“It became a regular thing every Sunday to have dinner with her and her family. I really felt like I was at home there.”
Decades later, Deiaco-Smith and Jouve are still in touch. They exchange cards every Christmas and have visited each other’s families.
“To this day, her act of kindness has influenced my life in many ways,” Deiaco-Smith said. “I tend to pay attention a little bit more for people who might need help. And I’m forever grateful that Madame Jouve did that for me.”
40.What made Holly feel isolated and lonely in France?
41.What was the only thing that supported Holly through the hard time?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Deiaco-Smith failed to communicate with the post office attendant because the attendant could only speak broken French.
43.Share an experience where you felt kindness from a stranger in your life. (In about 40words)
【答案】
40.It was hard to live daily life there, especially speaking French. / The difficulty of dealing with daily life in a new country and the trouble in speaking French made her feel isolated and lonely.
41.A care package from her mom was on the way. / Skippy peanut butter sent by her mom. / The knowledge that a little piece of home — the Skippy peanut butter package sent by her mom — was on the way supported her. 42.Deiaco-Smith failed to communicate with the post office attendant because the attendant could only speak broken French and knew a little English.
According to the passage, Deiaco-Smith failed to communicate with the post office attendant because she didn’t speak any English.
The attendant didn’t speak any English and could not understand Holly’s French accent, rather than speaking broken French.
43.On a rainy day, I forgot to take an umbrella and got stuck in the street. A kind stranger shared her umbrella with me and walked me to the nearest stop. This gentle kindness left me warm and taught me to help others in need.
One cold winter day, I lost my way and felt anxious. A warm-hearted stranger noticed my trouble, patiently guided me and comforted me. His simple kindness touched me deeply and encouraged me to pass on warmth to others.
