I had a serious problem. My sock drawer was mysteriously emptying. It wasn’t a ghost or a burglar; it was my dog, Buster, a fluffy, clever, and mischievous Golden Retriever. For weeks, I’d find single socks under the couch or behind the TV, but never the pairs. Buster would just look at me with his innocent eyes, tail thumping against the floor as if to say, “Socks? Missing? How odd!”
I decided to investigate. One Tuesday afternoon, I pretended to leave for work but quietly circled back and peered through the window. What I saw was a scene of strange dog business. Buster was with a serious-looking Poodle from next door and a skeptical Beagle from down the street. On his fluffy bed, which wasn’t for sleeping, was a treasure collection. My socks were piled high upon it!
The negotiation began. The Poodle, whom I recognized as Princess, stepped forward and dropped a high-quality, expensive dog biscuit at the edge of the bed. Buster sniffed it, nudged a single, plain white sock toward her, and then pulled back his paw, guarding the rest. Princess then added another biscuit to the pile. Satisfied, Buster used his nose to expertly push two striped socks toward her. The deal was done. Princess picked up her new socks and walked out proudly.
Next was the Beagle, Barney. He offered a well-licked, slightly flat tennis ball. Buster looked utterly unfazed. He turned his head away with a snort. Barney cried, and unwillingly added a half-eaten pig’s ear to the offer. This got Buster’s attention. A quick exchange was made for one striped sock
I burst in. “Buster! You furry little businessman!” All three dogs froze in guilty silence. Buster looked embarrassed, creeping over, not to apologize, but to gently nudge my least favorite pair of socks — the itchy Christmas ones from my aunt — toward my feet. It was a peace offering, a bribe (贿赂) to buy my silence. I couldn’t help but laugh. He wasn’t just a good thief; he was an excellent businessman. I took the socks. After all, every good economy needs a tax collector.
4. What drove the author to start the investigation?
A. Buster’s barking at the sock drawer.
B. A sock drawer left open frequently.
C. Unexpected piles of socks on Buster’s bed.
D. The odd appearance of socks around the house.
5. What was the final outcome of the trade between Princess and Buster?
A. Princess traded a costly biscuit for a plain white sock.
B. Princess exchanged two expensive biscuits for three socks.
C. Buster exchanged his striped sock in the deal for a pig’s ear.
D. Buster acquired a tennis ball and gave up two striped socks.
6. What does the underlined word “unfazed” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Uninterested. B. Uncertain. C. Excited. D. Confused.
7. What might the author do at last?
A. Make the neighbor pay for the traded socks.
B. Report Buster’s business to the animal shelter.
C. Accept the socks as a gesture of forgiving Buster.
D. Take all of Buster’s collections away as a punishment.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C
根据第一段中“For weeks, I’d find single socks under the couch or behind the TV, but never the pairs. (几周来,我总能在沙发底下或电视后面找到单只袜子,却从没发现成对的。)”可知,作者决定调查的直接原因是家里各处总是莫名其妙出现单只袜子,却找不到成对的。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The Poodle, whom I recognized as Princess, stepped forward and dropped a high-quality, expensive dog biscuit at the edge of the bed. Buster sniffed it, nudged a single, plain white sock toward her, and then pulled back his paw, guarding the rest. Princess then added another biscuit to the pile. Satisfied, Buster used his nose to expertly push two striped socks toward her.
根据第四段划线单词句中“He offered a well-licked, slightly flat tennis ball. Buster looked utterly…. (他递来一只被舔得干干净净、略微扁平的网球。巴斯特看起来……。)”以及后文“He turned his head away with a snort. (他哼了一声把头扭过去。)”描述巴斯特转过头去并哼了一声,说明他对巴尼拿出的网球完全不感兴趣。由此可知,unfazed 意为“不为所动的、不感兴趣的”,与A选项Uninterested“不感兴趣的”词义最接近。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I couldn’t help but laugh. He wasn’t just a good thief; he was an excellent businessman. I took the socks. After all, every good economy needs a tax collector. (我不禁笑了起来。他不只是个好小偷,更是一位出色的商人。我拿下了那双袜子。毕竟,每个好经济都需要一个收税人。)”可推知,作者最后可能会接受巴斯特的道歉并原谅了他。

Researchers may have found a way to keep plants from dying of thirst. They developed a soil additive (添加剂). It will steal water from the air to share with plants.
Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbent gel (SMAG 高吸水凝胶). It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases its accumulated water into the root zone of the plants.
Guihua Yu, an engineer at the University of Texas at Austin, led the team that developed the gel. The gel mixed with soil absorbs water and holds it. The next day, rather than allowing it to evaporate (蒸发), the gel instead slowly releases that water into the soil.
The engineers tested the soil additive to grow carrots. During an experiment, they compared carrots grown in sandy soil alone with carrots grown in sandy soil that had been mixed with the gel. The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water after about a month. In contrast, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.
Jeff Hattey is a soil scientist. He says similar additives have been used in potting soil for many years. He says the gel works in a similar way. “The big questions for me are, first, how much SMAG-soil would need to be used, and second, how long it would last once it’s in the soil.”
Yu believes future studies will help his team understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water in the air could allow crops to be grown in dryer climates where irrigation is not practical. It shouldn’t hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things. The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.
8. How does SMAG transport water?
A. By holding rainwater in soil and transporting it to plant roots.
B. By drawing stored water out of plant roots and moving it into dry soil.
C. By collecting available underground water and releasing it into the root zone.
D. By gathering water from the air overnight and draining it into the soil in daytime.
9. What does the carrot experiment show about SMAG?
A. It makes carrots grow faster.
B. It slows down soil water loss.
C. It loses 80% water in a month.
D. It completely prevents soil water loss.
10. What can we infer from Hattey’s words?
A. SMAG has a lot of advantages.
B. People will use SMAG-soil soon.
C. The SMAG is a totally new invention.
D. Scientists have to dig deep into SMAG.
11. What will Guihua Yu probably do in the near future?
A. Make SMAG more soil-friendly.
B. Make SMAG acceptable to people.
C. Check SMAG’s safety for the environment.
D. Lessen SMAG’s side effects on soil.
D 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第二段中“It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases its accumulated water into the root zone of the plants.(它在夜间吸收空气中的水分,到了第二天阳光照射时,再将储存的水分释放到植物根部区域。)”
根据第四段中“The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water after about a month. In contrast, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.(结果显示,经过凝胶处理的土壤在约一个月内流失了大约60%的水分;而未经处理的土壤仅在一周内就损失了80%的水分。)”
根据第五段中““The big questions for me are, first, how much SMAG-soil would need to be used, and second, how long it would last once it’s in the soil.”(“对我来说,最大的问题首先是需要使用多少SMAG土壤,其次是这种凝胶一旦进入土壤后能持续多久。”)”
根据最后一段中“It shouldn’t hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things. The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.(这种凝胶不会损害维持土壤健康、促进植物生长所需的细菌和蚯蚓。此外,如果凝胶流入湖泊或溪流,也不应带来任何风险。研究团队希望在不久的将来证实这一点。)”可知,余桂华的团队目前推测SMAG对土壤和水环境无害,但尚未证实。因此他们下一步最可能做的是验证该凝胶对环境的安全性。
D
Across southern Africa, elephant populations are on the rise. According to a 2024 study, the regional population has grown steadily since 2000 and now stands at around 290,000. In South Africa, roughly 44,000 elephants are kept within 94 reserves, most on privately or communally owned land, occupying less than 3 percent of the country’s area. A decline in ivory poaching (象牙盗猎) and enhanced conservation efforts have contributed to the population growth. However, the available space has become insufficient to support these expanding herds. As a result, some landowners have turned to killing the growing herds.
“Elephants have to be managed. You can’t keep filling a water bottle beyond its capacity,” says Sean Hensman, a wildlife conservationist. “Yet keeping such sizable animals contained — let alone well distributed across the landscape — is no easy task. Elephants are constantly breaking out of reserves.” Hensman says.
Hensman’s latest project — an AI-powered gate and sound system — aims to address the problem South Africa’s elephants are facing. The gate is equipped with a camera and a sound system. One of the gate’s key features is an AI image-recognition system to identify individual elephants, which is designed to make sure all animals in a herd are tracked. The sound system, meanwhile, is used to train the elephants to associate specific sounds coming from the gate with something desirable. Elephant managers installed the gate on the boundary between the two reserves. Once the elephants have been trained, managers will be able to use the sounds to guide them between the two reserves.
With more gates installed, more connections become possible. “We can connect one reserve to another and guide elephants through corridors — long and narrow belts linking separate protected areas.” Hensman says. Ultimately, the vision of the smart migration plan is to rely on these AI gates to link scattered migration corridors across South Africa, building complete elephant migration paths that bypass cities and human settlements. Not only does the smart gate demonstrate the technology’s potential to support the coexistence between humans and wildlife, but it also offers valuable guidance for protecting other large animals.
12. According to the first paragraph, what is the current situation of elephants in South Africa?
A. They face a space crisis due to overpopulation.
B. They require enhanced conservation efforts now.
C. Illegal hunting remains by far their greatest threat.
D. They live in wide and open national natural reserves.
13. Why does Hensman use the “water bottle” example in paragraph 2?
A. To describe a method for relocating elephants safely.
B. To criticize the lack of enough reserves for elephants.
C. To explain the need for controlling elephant herd size.
D. To show difficulties in ensuring enough water for elephants.
14. How does the AI-powered gate and sound system work?
A. It locks gates to keep elephants in one reserve.
B. It uses sound and reward to guide elephants to move.
C. It uses noises to scare elephants away from farmlands.
D. It relies on cameras to count elephants and prevent poaching.
15. What’s the most suitable title for this passage?
A. Wildlife Corridors for Free Elephant Movement
B. Reasons for Africa’s Growing Elephant Population
C. Training Methods for Stopping Elephants Escaping
D. AI Technology to Relieve Elephants’ Habitat Pressure
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第一段中“A decline in ivory poaching (象牙盗猎) and enhanced conservation efforts have contributed to the population growth. However, the available space has become insufficient to support these expanding herds. As a result, some landowners have turned to killing the growing herds. (象牙盗猎的减少以及加强的保护措施,为种群增长创造了条件。然而,现有空间已不足以支撑不断扩大的族群。因此,一些土地所有者转而采取了杀死这些大象的手段。)”可知,南非大象数量因盗猎减少和保护加强持续增长,但栖息地空间已无法支撑不断扩大的象群,这是当前最核心的困境。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中““Elephants have to be managed. You can’t keep filling a water bottle beyond its capacity,” says Sean Hensman, a wildlife conservationist. (“大象必须得到管理,你不能把水瓶装满到极限之外。”野生动物保护专家肖恩·亨斯曼说。)”可推知,亨斯曼在第二段中使用“水瓶”这个例子是为了说明控制大象群体数量的必要性。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The sound system, meanwhile, is used to train the elephants to associate specific sounds coming from the gate with something desirable. Elephant managers installed the gate on the boundary between the two reserves. Once the elephants have been trained, managers will be able to use the sounds to guide them between the two reserves.
How to Get More Time in a Day
Do you feel like there are never enough hours in a day? Are you always behind on your tasks? If so, here are some tips to help you take control of your time.
____16____ Writing down the things you need to get done removes the stress of trying to keep track of them mentally. What’s more, it will be easier to make a plan to address your tasks.
When making your to-do list, be aware of unrealistic expectations. If your list is too long, you’ll feel discouraged when you can’t get through it. ____17____ Decide what absolutely needs to be done that day and what can be put off to the next. Chances are that putting some duties off to the near future won’t bring any serious consequences.
Once you have your list, attack it one item at a time. Many people believe that performing multiple tasks simultaneously (同时地) saves time, but in truth multitasking takes 30 percent longer than doing things one by one. ____18____.
The next step is to find ways to use time more wisely. Plenty of time each day is spent texting or emailing, so imagine how much time we’d save if we just called people instead. ____19____ It’s faster than typing, and it’s often easier to grasp someone’s meaning when we can hear their voice.
At the end of the day, it’s important to give your mind and body a chance to rest. Take breaks to stop, breathe, and clear your thoughts, and don’t let mounting duties prevent you from getting enough sleep. ____20____
A. The solution is to prioritize.
B. You can begin by making a to-do list.
C. Speaking over the phone is more efficient.
D. Only when you remove such activities can you feel free.
E. Besides, people tend to make more mistakes when they multitask.
F. Though they may be enjoyable, they have few long-term benefits.
G. These quiet hours build the foundation for higher daily productivity.
B 17. A 18. E 19. C 20. G
下文“Writing down the things you need to get done removes the stress of trying to keep track of them mentally. What’s more, it will be easier to make a plan to address your tasks. (将需要完成的事情写下来,可以消除在脑海中不断记惦的烦恼。此外,这样也更容易制定计划来应对各项任务。)”说明“写下需要完成的事情能减轻心理负担,也更容易制定计划”,这正是对“制定待办清单”这一行为的好处阐述。B选项“You can begin by making a to-do list.(你可以从制定一份待办清单开始。)”
上文“If your list is too long, you’ll feel discouraged when you can’t get through it.(如果清单太长,当你无法完成时就会感到沮丧。)”提到“如果清单太长,完不成时会感到沮丧”,下文“Decide what absolutely needs to be done that day and what can be put off to the next.(决定哪些是当天必须完成的,哪些可以推迟到第二天。)” A选项“The solution is to prioritize.(解决办法是分清主次。)”
上文“Once you have your list, attack it one item at a time. Many people believe that performing multiple tasks simultaneously (同时地) saves time, but in truth multitasking takes 30 percent longer than doing things one by one.( 一旦你有了清单,一次一项地完成它。很多人认为同时处理多项任务能节省时间,但事实上,多任务会比逐一完成多耗费30%的时间。)”可知,本段核心是反驳“多任务处理能节省时间”的错误观点,并且已经指出“多任务处理比单任务多花30%的时间”。E选项“Besides, people tend to make more mistakes when they multitask.(此外,人们在多任务处理时更容易犯错。)”
上文“Plenty of time each day is spent texting or emailing, so imagine how much time we’d save if we just called people instead.(每天花大量时间发短信或发邮件,试想一下,如果我们直接打电话,会节省多少时间。)”提到“用打电话代替发短信或发邮件,能节省很多时间”,下文“It’s faster than typing, and it’s often easier to grasp someone’s meaning when we can hear their voice.(打电话比打字更快,而且当我们能听到对方的声音时,往往更容易理解对方的意思。)” C选项“Speaking over the phone is more efficient.(打电话更高效。)”
上文“At the end of the day, it’s important to give your mind and body a chance to rest. Take breaks to stop, breathe, and clear your thoughts, and don’t let mounting duties prevent you from getting enough sleep.(一天结束时,重要的是让自己的身心得到休息。休息一下,停下来,深呼吸,理清思路,不要让越来越多的工作妨碍你获得充足的睡眠。)”强调了休息的重要性,建议人们不要因为工作而牺牲睡眠。G选项“These quiet hours build the foundation for higher daily productivity.(这些安静的休息时光为更高的日常生产力奠定了基础。)”

On a cold and windy day, Howard Kelly, a poor boy, was going from door to door, trying to sell things to pay for his school. But he didn’t make any sales. Feeling very sad, he almost wanted to give up. Also, his stomach was growling loudly because he hadn’t eaten for days. With no other option, he decided to ask for food at the next house. He was a bit scared as he knocked on the door, not sure what to say.
When the door opened, a young woman stood there, a faint scar across her left cheek. Howard got even more nervous. “Could…could you give me a drink of water?” he asked, looking down at his feet.
The woman saw how thin and tired the boy was. She thought he needed something more than just water to feel better, so she brought him a glass of milk instead. Howard held the cup with his small hands and drank the milk slowly. Then he asked, “How much do I have to pay you?”
The woman smiled kindly and said, “You don’t need to pay me anything. My mother always told me that we should help others without asking for money in return.”
Howard was so touched. “Thank you so much!” he said with a big smile. As he walked away, he felt not only stronger in his body but also more hopeful about people.
Many years passed. The kind young woman became very sick. Years of frequent medical treatment had almost emptied her savings, leaving her trapped in poverty. The doctors in her small town couldn’t help her, so they sent her to a big hospital in the city. There, many famous doctors would try to cure her. One of them was Dr. Howard Kelly. When he heard where the sick woman came from, he remembered something important. He quickly got up and rushed to her room.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

The hospital bill she had long feared arrived.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Entering the room, Dr. Kelly saw the woman lying weakly on the bed. He instantly spotted the faint scar on her left cheek and recognized his kind benefactor from years ago. A wave of warmth and gratitude flooded his heart. Determined to save her life, he devoted himself entirely to her treatment. He carefully examined her condition, discussed medical plans with other experts repeatedly, and adjusted her treatment in time. Day by day, the woman’s health improved gradually under his meticulous care. However, she was constantly worried about the huge medical bill, knowing she could hardly afford it.
The hospital bill she had long feared arrived. Hesitantly, she opened it, only to find a line of words written on the corner: “Paid in full with a glass of warm milk.” Tears of joy and relief streamed down her face. At that moment, Dr. Kelly walked in. He told her softly that kindness was always a circle. The simple warm milk she offered to a poor boy years ago had come back to her in the most beautiful way. True kindness never goes to waste and will always warm life in return.
