Amelia
My friend recently bought a new jacket and asked me, “Be honest. Does it look good on me?”
I said, “Well, the jacket doesn’t really suit you.” Now she’s upset and won’t even talk to me. Should I have lied instead? What should I do now?
Liam
Please don’t be too hard on yourself. You gave her what she asked for—honesty. But maybe she wasn’t ready to hear the truth. Honesty is the best choice, but how you say it matters just as much as the honesty itself. Don’t use it as an excuse to say something in a hurtful way.
Henry
Let things cool off for a few days and wait for your friend to calm down. After a day or two, you can send her a short message. Write something like: “I’m sorry I hurt your feelings the other day. I realize I could have said it much more nicely. I hope we can talk.”

Sophie
I agree with everyone else here. Next time, try using the “sandwich method”. It works like this: Start with something nice——for example, “ ① ” Then gently add your honest opinion——“ ② ” Finally, end with something encouraging—“ ③ ” People are much more likely to accept your opinion when they don’t feel attacked.

On April 19, 2026, the Beijing E-Town Half Marathon made big news. A new human-like robot called Flash ran the half-marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. It broke the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds, becoming the first robot to beat top human runners and surprising all.
Flash’s good result comes from its smart design. It has strong bionic (仿生的) legs, efficient cooling system (高效散热系统) and long-lasting batteries. Besides, Beidou navigation (导航) helps it avoid losing its way on roads. It knocked over a roadblock and fell near the finish line, but it quickly got back on its feet and completed the run.
A year-to-year comparison shows clear growth. In 2025, just 21 teams joined and six finished with the best time in 2 hours 40 minutes and 42 seconds. In 2026, 102 teams signed up and 47 crossed the finish line, with more than two-fifths finishing the race fully using independent navigation.
More than just a sports event, it shows the rapid progress of China’s human-like robot industry. The technology will soon be used in space exploration and elderly care, marking a historic breakthrough in this field. We believe such robots will enter ordinary families and change our daily life little by little.
31. How much faster was Flash than the human world record?
A. 57 minutes and 20 seconds. B. 50 minutes and 26 seconds. C. 6 minutes 54 seconds.
32. What helps Flash find directions during the race?
A. Strong bionic legs. B. Efficient cooling system. C. Beidou navigation.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A. All robots could run with navigation in 2026.
B. Fewer robot teams took part in the event in 2026.
C. The robot marathon develops much better than last year.
34. What does the underlined phrase “a historic breakthrough” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. A successful competition. B. An important development. C. A sudden stop.
35. What’s the writer’s attitude toward the future of human-like robots?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Unbelievable.

Recently, a touching movie called DEAR YOU has brought Qiaopi back to people’s attention. So, what exactly is Qiaopi?
Qiao (侨) means Chinese emigrants (移民), and Pi (批) means letters. Qiaopi refer to letters that overseas Chinese sent to their families in China, usually with money, from the late 19th century to the 1970s. They were mainly written by Chinese in Southeast Asia for their families in Guangdong, Fujian and other overseas Chinese hometowns.
Based on their purpose, Qiaopi can be divided into three types. The first is family Qiaopi, sent to parents, wives, or children, talking about the sender's life abroad and asking about family health. The second is charity Qiaopi. During hard times, overseas Chinese sent money to build bridges, roads, schools, libraries, and many places in their hometowns. The third is patriotic Qiaopi. In times of war, overseas Chinese sent money to buy planes, medicine, and army food to support our nation.
However, Qiaopi are not only simple letters and money. They keep important memories of overseas Chinese and records of that special period in history. Most importantly, they fully show traditional Chinese spirits— respect for family, attention to education, and sincere love for the motherland. For these reasons, Qiaopi were listed as national intangible cultural heritage in 2013.
Today, people seldom use Qiaopi. Instead, we communicate through WeChat, emails or text messages. The form of Qiaopi has disappeared, but its spirit still speaks to us. It reminds us that no matter what tool we use—a letter, a message or a phone call—the true value lies in the love, duty and care we put into each word. As long as we hold family close, support our hometowns and love our country, the spirit of Qiaopi continues on in every message we send across oceans.
Qiaopi, A Bond of Love
Introduction:
·Definition: ____51____ with money from Overseas Chinese to families at home.
·Senders: Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia.
·____52____: Families in Guangdong, Fujian, etc.
Three types:
·Family Qiaopi—Care for family, share overseas life, and ask about health.
·Charity Qiaopi—Send money to ____53____.
·Patriotic Qiaopi—Support the nation during the war.
Value:
·____54____: Keep overseas Chinese memories and records of that special period.
·Cultural value: Reflect traditional Chinese spirits.
Though modern communication has replaced its spirit remains ____55____.

Have you ever stopped to think how much the world has changed because of a simple question? Every step forward in human history starts with someone asking “how”, “what” or “why”— and being curious is the driving force behind all progress.
Curiosity is not just for kids, it’s the key to solving problems and saving lives. In the 18th century, smallpox was a deadly disease that killed millions. Dr Edward Jenner heard a local story: milkmaids who caught cowpox, an illness from cows, never got smallpox. Instead of taking it for granted (理所当然), he asked, “Why is this true?” and ran careful experiments for deeper understanding to test the idea. His curiosity led to the world’s first vaccine, which trains our body to fight diseases and has saved lots of lives ever since.
Another example is penicillin (盘尼西林). In 1928, scientist Alexander Fleming returned from holiday and noticed something strange in his lab: mould (霉菌) in a dish had stopped bacteria from growing. Most people would have thrown the dish away, but Fleming asked, “What’s happening here?” He dug deeper into this unexpected observation and discovered penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic (抗生素) that still cures life-threatening illnesses today.
Many students worry that asking questions makes them look silly. But the truth is, there are no silly questions. From childhood experiments to life-changing scientific discoveries, every step forward starts with curiosity. Never be afraid to ask “why”— it’s the first step to changing the world.
56. What did Dr Jenner’s curiosity finally lead to?
