It was the last day of the school year. The classroom was filled with excitement. When our teacher, Mr. Johnson, walked in, holding a CD player, everyone’s face lit up with a smile. We knew that this wasn’t going to be another normal day, but a special one.
“Please calm down and sit,” said Mr. Johnson, “I’m glad everyone’s here for the final reading test of the year.” When everyone cried, Mr. Johnson laughed, saying it was just a joke. Then he reminded us that we still had a job to do. “You need to clean out your desks and put all your things into your backpacks.” he added gently.
As we began our task, Mr. Johnson turned on the CD player. The lively music made the room feel like a party. Some of us started singing along with the music, others were dancing around their desks while they were cleaning them out. Even Mr. Johnson showed us a few dance steps, making everyone laugh heartily. After we finished cleaning, someone asked, “When is break time?” Mr. Johnson took out some balls and started playing with them. Suddenly, he let the balls drop and said, “Break time starts ... now!”
Just as we were about to rush out, our headmaster, Mrs. Miller, appeared at the door. “Mr. Johnson!” she cried out. A moment of silence fell over the room as we thought, “Mr. Johnson might be in trouble.” However, to our surprise, Mrs. Miller couldn’t help but laugh at the sight and left us to enjoy our break.
During break time, Mr. Johnson surprised us with another treat. He went to the cafe and came back with ice creams for everyone. We all cheered for him!
As we walked back to the classroom, we passed Mrs. Miller’s office. Someone joked, “Don’t play with the ice creams, Mr. Johnson!” We all laughed together...

If the queen doesn’t lay enough eggs, the busy beehive would soon be empty. In bee communities, females take on the job of protecting the beehive.
④Cows and birds often eat together to help one another. The birds eat the insects on the back of cows. And in return, the birds make a lot of warning noises. They will fly away if they find danger. Crocodiles (鳄鱼) and birds called plovers (千鸟) help each other in the same way. Crocodiles have very sharp teeth. After they eat, the tiny and harmful animals usually remain on their teeth. The plover will pick the animals out of a crocodile’s teeth. This provides food for itself and helps clean the crocodile’s teeth.

In the past, many primary and middle school students had to take lunch breaks by lying on their desks. This often led to neck pain, arm numbness. Besides, students suffered from poor rest quality, which affected their health and afternoon studies.
To solve the problem of students’ desk-napping on September 1st, 2025, the General Administration of Market Regulation (Standardization Administration of China, 中国国家标准委) made the new national standard—General Technical Requirements for Primary and Middle School Students’ Lunch Break Desks and Chairs (《中小学生午休课桌椅通用技术要求》). It took effect on February 1st, 2026.
Tailored to students’ growth, the standard has strict rules. For classes, primary school desks are 455 mm to 730 mm high, and middle school ones 565 mm to 790 mm. For breaks, chairs can fold into a lying position (over 1050 mm long) with backrests tilting over 135 degrees. Headrests (头枕) and legrests (搁腿部件) also have standard sizes for comfort.
This standard ends the unhealthy “desk-napping” habit and protects students’ health. It also shows society’s care for students’ needs, turning better rest into better learning efficiency (效率) and building a more student-friendly educational environment.

Passage 2

In the past, many primary and middle school students had to take lunch breaks by lying on their desks. This often led to neck pain, arm numbness. Besides, students suffered from poor rest quality, which affected their health and afternoon studies.
To solve the problem of students’ desk-napping, on September 1st, 2025, the General Administration of Market Regulation (Standardization Administration of China, 中国国家标准委) made the new national standard—General Technical Requirements for Primary and Middle School Students’ Lunch Break Desks and Chairs (《中小学生午休课桌椅通用技术要求》).
