Situational Lead-in
1.Show pictures of typhoons, floods and wildfires. Ask: What natural disasters can you see? Are they dangerous?
2.Divide students into groups of four and discuss: How dangerous can natural disasters be? Encourage simple English expressions.
3.Present the topic and learning objectives.

Activity 1: Predicting & New Words
Show pictures of three disasters. Guide students to learn typhoon, flood, wildfire and predict the main idea of the passage.
Activity 2: Layered Reading & Question Analysis
Skimming: Students read quickly and answer four reading questions. Check answers and give comments.
Scanning: Read carefully and work in groups to complete the table about disasters (definition, causes, damage).
Expand knowledge: Introduce the 1998 Yangtze River Flood and Canadian wildfires.
Activity 3: Language Points & Practice
Explain key knowledge with original sentences:
Grammar: Adverbial clauses of time with when, explain different tenses and do sentence exercises.
Phrases: Explain cool down, cause damage, reach up to, fight against and ask students to make oral sentences.
Word distinction: Teach the usage of amount, success family words and multiple meanings of badly. Do fill-in-the-blank exercises.
Activity 4: Text Retelling
Retell the three natural disasters in groups with the help of the table.

Review new words, phrases, grammar and main content together.
4. Homework
Basic: Recite words, phrases and key sentences; finish workbook exercises.
