The Forbidden City is well known for being full of cultural and historical Chinese relics. But Masters in the Forbidden City does not just focus on the stories of the past.
Instead, the documentary movie, which came out on CCTV-9, focuses on ordinary people — the restorers of relics and antiques.
The stories are told at a slow and relaxing pace, reflecting the restorers’ work. Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming, and sometimes boring. Yet these restorers’ patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
“If you choose this job, you have to stand hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet,” says Wang Jin, an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (手艺) in the restorers. “Years of routine work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit,” China Daily commented. “Looking for precision and perfection, devoting yourself to work, patience, endurance..., all these qualities come from the craftsman spirit.”
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play the guitar and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this, a narrator says, “The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.”
Masters in the Forbidden City tells us that many people’s ideas about antique restorers are wrong, allowing them to realize that the restorers are not dull, old professors, but people in their 40s, 30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.
4. According to the passage, what’s the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City?
A. To show people how antiques are restored.
B. To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people.
C. To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers.
D. To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers.
5. What can we learn from what Wang Jin says in paragraph 4?
A. He often gets tired of his work.
B. Antique restorers need to be patient and peaceful.
C. There is no need to do restoration work fast.
D. It takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration.
6. Which word best describes the restorers of relics and antiques?
A. Dull. B. Humorous. C. Enthusiastic. D. Ordinary.
7. What is the purpose of the bicycle-riding scene in the documentary?
A. To encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration.
B. To show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers.
C. To remind the audience of the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty.
D. To show the different image of antique restorers.

Edward O. Wilson, known as “the ant man”, was born on June 10, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents divorced when he was young, and he moved frequently throughout his childhood. Wilson grew up exploring the forests and wildlife. One of these adventures left him partly blind, but they also set off his lifelong fascination (着迷) with ants and their social structures.
Wilson earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama. In 1955, he received his PhD from Harvard and worked there until retirement.
Wilson’s early study of ants led to his first major discovery in 1959: How ants communicate through the release of chemical signals.
Later, in 1990, Wilson and German biologist Bent Holldobler published their Pulitzer-winning The Ants. It detailed the insects’ social structure that was both valued by entomologists (昆虫学者) and accessible to general readers.
Another of Wilson’s major works started in the early 1960s when he teamed up with Robert MacArthur. The pair published The Theory of Island Biogeography, where they sought to explain why different places have different numbers of species.
What many consider to be Wilson’s most important contributions to evolutionary biology came in 1975 when he published Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. The work explored the genetic and evolutionary roots of animal behaviour and argued that genes shaped human behaviour. Wilson faced accusations (谴责) for these ideas but finally his work largely proved true. In 1978, his ideas on the role biology plays in human culture ended in On Human Nature, which won him a Pulitzer in 1979.
Wilson published more than 400 scientific papers and 20 books. He received more than 150 awards and honours from around the world. These accomplishments offered him a type of academic superstar status, but friends and colleagues said the polite Southerner remained down to earth. “One of the qualities I really admired about Professor Wilson was his ability to really listen to and engage with whomever he was interacting with, ” said Corrie S. Moreau, who was one of Wilson’s final advisees.
8. What contributed to Wilson’s passion for ants?
A. His accidental disability. B. His boyhood spent in nature.
C. The school education he received. D. The discovery he made about ants.
9. What is the book On Human Nature about?
A. The links between biology and human culture.
B. The distribution of different species.
C. The social structure of ants.
D. The role of chemical signals in communication.
10. According to the last paragraph, which word can best describe Wilson?
A. Warm-hearted. B. Honest. C. Independent. D. Productive.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To promote Wilson’s most popular books.
B. To explain the social behavior of ants in detail.
C. To highlight the challenges Wilson faced in his personal life.
D. To introduce the life and key achievements of Wilson.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. D

An Australian professor is developing a robot to monitor the health of grazing cattle, a development that could bring big changes to a profession that's relied largely on a low-tech approach for decades but is facing a labor shortage.
Salah Sukkarieh, a professor at the University of Sydney, sees robots as necessary given how cattlemen are aging. He is building a four-wheeled robot that will run on solar and electric power. It will use cameras and sensors to monitor the animals. A computer system will analyze the video to determine whether a cow is sick. Radio tags (标签) on the animals will measure temperature changes. The quality of grassland will be tracked by monitoring the shape, color and texture (质地) of grass. That way, cattlemen will know whether they need to move their cattle to another field for nutrition purposes.
Machines have largely taken over planting, watering and harvesting crops such as corn and wheat, but the monitoring of cattle has gone through fewer changes.
For Texas cattleman Pete Bonds, it's increasingly difficult to find workers interested in watching cattle. But Bonds doesn't believe a robot is right for the job. Years of experience in the industry - and failed attempts to use technology - have convinced him that the best way to check cattle is with a man on a horse. Bonds, who bought his first cattle almost 50 years ago, still has each of his cowboys inspect 300 or 400 cattle daily and look for signs that an animal is getting sick.
Other cattlemen see more promise in robots. Michael Kelsey Paris, vice president of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association, said a robot could be extremely useful given rising concerns about cattle theft. Cattle tend to be kept in remote places and their value has risen, making them appealing targets.
12. What is a problem with the cattle-raising industry?
A. Soil pollution. B. Lack of workers.
C. Aging machines. D. Low profitability.
13. What will Sukkarieh's robot be able to do?
A. Monitor the quality of grass. B. Cure the diseased cattle.
C. Move cattle to another field. D. Predict weather changes.
14. Why does Pete Bonds still hire cowboys to watch cattle?
A. He wants to help them earn a living. B. He thinks men can do the job better.
C. He is inexperienced in using robots. D. He enjoys the traditional way of life.
15. How may robots help with cattle watching according to Michael Kelsey?
A. Increase the value of cattle. B. Bring down the cost of labor.
C. Make the job more appealing. D. Keep cattle from being stolen.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. D

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文
It is exciting and enjoyable for one to experience both being fired for being honest and being rewarded. It was a pleasant Tuesday morning. Sunray Mart, a high-end (高端的) supermarket opened its doors to its customers. 60-year-old Billy had just started his first day on the job as the store’s sales associate (业员), and he couldn’t have been happier. Getting a job at 70 was quite challenging, and Billy could not thank his fate enough for somehow bringing him this work.
Wearing a warm smile, he began his work. After a while, he noticed one customer, a man in a clean black suit, approaching the store manager at the checkout....
“Excuse me, young man,” the customer greeted the manager at the billing desk. “Could you please tell me how much this toy costs? I left my glasses in my office, so I can’t see the price clearly. Would you please help me out?” “It’s $ 800, sir!” the manager took a look and said.
Billy was quite surprised and raised a brow (额头). He had just arranged the toys from the collection the man had wanted, all of which cost at most $ 200. So Billy lifted the exact toy from the lower shelf to double check its price and learned that it was actually $ 200, not $800 like the manager had claimed. Without further hesitation, Billy decided to correct the manager and approached the two men at the checkout, “Excuse me, sir, I think there’s been a mistake... That toy costs $ 200, not $ 800,” Billy said, pointing to the toy box his manager held.
Billy’s manager frowned (皱眉) and was clearly frustrated as he stared angrily at him, “apologize on behalf of my new sales associate,” the manager rolled his eyes and turned to the customer. “He’s new here, sir... and is probably a bit confused about the items listed for sale, The toy is $ 800.” Billy realized that his manager was trying to cheat the customer.

【答案】
But Billy could not openly oppose (反对) him. However, he could not just stand there, watching a customer being tricked for extra money, So he said, “Sir, kindly excuse my manager. He’s been dealing with a lot of items around, so he’s probably confused with the prices. I may be new here, but I just saw the price of that toy clearly. It costs only $ 200. At this point, the manager lost his temper and started shouting at Billy. After a short quarrel, the manager said angrily, “Get out. You are fired!”, ignoring Billy’s beg.
All of a sudden, the man Billy “helped” appeared from nowhere. He prevented Billy leaving the supermarket, and praised him for being honest. He turned out to be the owner of the supermarket, who came by especially to experience the real service of the employees as an ordinary customer. He was really surprised by what he had gone through. Without Billy, he would have been cheated. He appreciated Billy’s honesty and bravery again and rewarded him with $ 200, saying Billy was just what his supermarket needed most and decided to fire the dishonest manager.
