He was unable to do a steady job. He suddenly fell ill and had to be admitted to the hospital. He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was a perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them. One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (使瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.” My dad would cry, every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad — who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture — loved every single child in that hospital. 4. Why did the author’s father work at the local children’s hospital? A. To make his serious heart condition less serious. B. To keep himself occupied and pleased. C. To realize his childhood dream. D. To earn money to pay for treatment. 5. How did the author’s father help the paralyzed girl? A. He helped her practice walking. B. He visited her and made a toy for her. C. He showed her that she could still do things. D. He painted special pictures for her. 6. What can be learned about the paralyzed girl according to Paragraph 3? A. She eventually became a unique painter. B. She was sent home and never seen again. C. She gradually recovered and walked. D. She sent the author’s dad a picture painted with her mouth. 7. What message does the passage mainly convey? A. It’s better to give than to receive. B. A sick person should not focus on his disease. C. Volunteering is a worthwhile thing to do. D. Love can sometimes bring great results. B 5. C 6. C 7. 根据第二段“He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. (他想做点什么让自己忙起来,所以他决定在当地儿童医院做志愿者。)”可知,作者的父亲在当地儿童医院工作是为了让自己有事可做,保持忙碌和愉悦。故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, ‘See, you can do anything you set your mind to.’ At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. (他把纸竖起来,把画笔放进嘴里,开始画画。他根本不用手。他一直对她说:‘看,你可以做任何你下定决心要做的事。’ 那天结束时,她开始用嘴画画,她和我爸爸成了朋友。)”可知,作者的父亲通过自己不用手画画,向小女孩展示了她仍然可以做很多事情,从而帮助她。故选C项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. (一段时间后,我爸爸康复、回来工作后,那个瘫痪的小女孩进来了,只是这次她在走路。她径直跑到我爸爸身边,紧紧地拥抱了他。她给了他一张她用手画的画。)”可知,瘫痪的小女孩逐渐康复并能够走路了。故选C项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture—loved every single child in that hospital. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) holds events for competitive eating all around the world. One of the most popular contests (竞赛) is held every 4th of July on Coney Island in New York. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest started in 1916 and the event has been dominated (占据优势) by Takeru Kobayashi. The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row. The main types of food eaten in the contests are fast food. Hot dogs, chicken wings, pickles, corndogs and pizza are main foods of the contests. The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes. Now most of the competitors are men, but there are also women who take part in competitive eating. Being large and overweight isn’t necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed. The IFOCE has very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive eating. Competitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are allowed to enter. They also advise against any type of home training. There has been much talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFOCE has talked about that with the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not agree to it at present. 8. Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest _____. A. has a history of over 200 years B. takes place once a year in Japan C. is becoming less popular than before D. has made Takeru Kobayashi famous 9. What do we know about eating contests? A. Fast food is the only type of food. B. They usually last ten minutes or so. C. Only men are allowed to enter a contest. D. They are open to competitors of all ages. 10. What is the third paragraph mainly about? A. How to win an eating contest. B. The history of competitive eating. C. Safety guidelines from the IFOCE. D. The disadvantages of eating too much. 11. What’s the main purpose of the text? A. To report. B. To advertise. C. To introduce. D. To warn. 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了竞吃比赛的有关情况。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。由第一段中的“The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001 ... has won the contest six years in a row”可知,Takeru Kobayashi在美国纽约的内森国际吃热狗大赛上连夺六届冠军,这使得他名声远扬。故D选项正确。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。由第二段中的“The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes”可知,竞吃比赛通常持续十分钟左右。故B选项正确。 【10题详解】 段落大意题。由第三段“The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (扩张) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed.” D Finding trapped people quickly is often the difference between life and death in relief missions. New robot tech is coming to the rescue. Imagine you’re trapped in a collapsed building. Unable to move, you’re forced to wait. Finally, something looks through the crack (裂缝), and you find yourself face-to-face with... a robot? We have to deal with our fair share of disasters on our little blue planet. These calamities can range from extreme weather events like hurricanes to other naturally occurring phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are times when people suffer from intentional injuries, even resulting in death. And for most wildfires, they are simply the unfortunate side effect of human activities. Regardless of the cause, for centuries, humans have set out on search-and-rescue missions to save those left in a disaster’s wake. But in the past few decades, robots have taken an increasingly active role in these rescue efforts. They have battled their way through disasters. These mechanical rescuers can range from ground to sea to aerial (航空的) vehicles — including unmanned aerial vehicles that don’t just search through disaster areas for survivors, but provide exploration from above. Beyond that, scientists across the globe are building new, creative types of rescue robots. Many projects still in development draw inspiration from the animal kingdom, mimicking (模仿) designs that nature has perfected to make machines that can move through difficult environments, from droids that look like snakes to a group of autonomous bees. And while many are still years away from being used in actual disasters. 12. Why did the writer use the situation of people being trapped in a collapsed building? A. To tell people the real scene of the earthquakes. B. To show how people are disappointed in disasters. C. To stress the importance of waiting in disasters. D. To introduce a new way of saving during disasters. 13. What does the underlined word “calamities” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Buildings. B. Failures. C. Missions. D. Disasters. 14. What is the advantage of the rescue robots? A. They are able to increase very quickly in numbers. B. They can carry out missions in different situations. C. They would take the place of human completely. D. They don’t have any side effects of human activities. 15. Where do the scientists get inspirations to make droids? A. The various animals. B. The science fiction. C. The personal imagination. D. The harsh environment. 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了救援机器人的优点、适用范围以及未来发展。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第一段中“Finding trapped people quickly is often the difference between life and death in relief missions. New robot tech is coming to the rescue. (在救援任务中,迅速找到被困人员往往关乎生死。新的机器人技术即将派上用场)”可知,作者使用人们被困在倒塌建筑中的情境是为了介绍一种灾难中的新救援方式,也就是用机器人来救援。故选D。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“We have to deal with our fair share of disasters on our little blue planet. (在我们这个小小的蓝色星球上,我们经历了不少灾难)”和下文“range from extreme weather events like hurricanes to other naturally occurring phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. (包括极端天气事件,如飓风,以及其他自然发生的现象,如地震和火山爆发)”可知,calamities的意思是“灾难”,与disasters同义。故选D。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“These mechanical rescuers can range from ground to sea to aerial (航空的)vehicles. (这些机械救援者可以是地面、海上或空中的交通工具)”可知,救援机器人的优势是它们可以在不同的情况下执行任务。故选B。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Many projects still in development draw inspiration from the animal kingdom, mimicking (模仿) designs that nature has perfected to make machines that can move through difficult environments, from droids that look like snakes to a group of autonomous bees. (许多仍在研发中的项目从动物界汲取灵感,模仿自然界已臻完善的设计,打造出能够在复杂环境中行动的各类机器——从外形似蛇的机器人到一群自主作业的仿生蜜蜂机器人,不一而足)”可知,科学家是从各种动物那里获得制作机器人的灵感。故选A。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Before diving into a study, have you ever spent some time checking the length of the text or the number of pages you need to read? Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he only had one dime (一分钱) left. His empty stomach reminded him that he hadn’t eaten for days. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked. When a lovely young woman opened the door, he nearly lost his courage. “What can I do for you?” she asked. The boy paused, “Could I have...a drink of water?” He dared not look into her eyes. She looked at the bony (瘦骨嶙峋的) boy and thought he might need energy, so she brought him a glass of milk. He drank it slowly, then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile. “My mother taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he felt stronger physically, and his faith in human race increased. He had been about to give up before that point. Years later the young woman became seriously ill. Local doctors couldn’t treat her effectively, so they sent her to a big city hospital, where specialists could be called in. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for consultation (会诊). When he heard the name of her hometown, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down the hall to her room. As he walked quickly through the corridor, memories flooded back—the cold day, the empty stomach, the warm milk, and her gentle smile. Could it really be her? His heart beat faster. Entering the room, he saw a pale woman lying on the bed, weak but still recognizable. C Competitive eating has become big business. A. Buildings. B. Failures. C. Missions. D. Disasters. 14. The same kind eyes, though tired now, looked up at him. 47. 从方框中选择恰当的单词,并用正确的形式填空。每词限用一次,有两词为多余选项。 consult earn starve beg drink chat refuse energy severe touch recognize hesitate A poor boy was selling goods to _____ fees for school.
