Mobile phones should be kept from classrooms, the UK minister for schools has said. Nick Gibb said he had concerns about the effect that the phone was having on children, and also said the Government should introduce lessons for pupils on how to limit their screen time.
Mr Gibb said, “Schools obviously are free to set their own behaviour policies but my own view is that schools should ban (禁止)mobile telephones and smart phones inside school, and particularly inside classrooms. I believe very strongly that children should be limiting their own use at home. Every hour spent online and on a smart phone is an hour less talking to family, and it's an hour less exercise and it's an hour less sleep. And of course it is a lack of sleep that research is showing can have a damaging effect on a child's mental health.”
The parents are told that children will be asked to break off at least every two hours and avoid social media before bedtime. The UK would be following in the footsteps of European countries if schools were to introduce a ban. with French pupils being told to leave their smart phones at home when they returned from their summer holidays last year.
At the Festival of Education at Wellington College last summer, Professor Michael from America said that any sensible head would ban mobile phones. “It's far too distracting for children having mobile phones. Texting, playing games, all this takes place. Mobile phones go off in classrooms, disrupting lessons. Ban them. If children want to use a phone in an emergency they can use the school phone.”
24. What's Nick Gibb's attitude towards using mobile phone in school?
A. Cautious. B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent. D. Disapproving.
25. What is one possible result of spending too much time online according to the text?
A. An hour less exercise a week. B. More effects on sleep quality.
C. Less communication with family. D. An improvement in mental health.
26. Which country has asked students to leave their phones at home?
A. UK. B. New Zealand.
C. USA. D. France.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Mobile Phones cause bad effects on our study.
B. Mobile phones should be banned from classrooms.
C. Parents should forbid their kids to use mobile phones.
D. Students can use mobile phones in case of emergency.
D 25. C 26. D 27. B
根据第一段中的“Mobile phones should be kept from classrooms, the UK minister for schools has said.”
根据第二段中的“Every hour spent online and on a smart phone is an hour less talking to family”可知,在网上和在智能手机上花费的每一小时意味着与家人交谈减少了一个小时,根据课文内容,上网时间过长可能会导致减少与家人的交流。
根据第三段中的“The UK would be following in the footsteps of European countries if schools were to introduce a ban with French pupils being told to leave their smart phones at home when they returned from their summer holidays last year.”
根据第一段中的“Mobile phones should be kept from classrooms, the UK minister for schools has said. Nick Gibb said he had concerns about the effect that the phone was having on children, and also said the Government should introduce lessons for pupils on how to limit their screen time.”
Mobile phones should be kept from classrooms即可找到文章中心,然后到选项中找同义句,因此该题选B(Mobile phones should be banned from classrooms)。
C
When you set a foot outside of your door to drop trash, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me” may run through your mind. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people? Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time? Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble?
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation-Y grew up staring at screens. We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people that we don’t have the courage to do in reality.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t really believe and being someone you think they want you to be—it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, every “hello” leads to a smile—and a smile is worth a lot.
28. What do we learn about the author?
A. He likes to meet someone new. B. He feels stressed out lately.
C. He’s active in attending social events. D. He used to be afraid of talking to others.
29. What’s the problem of Generation-Y in the author’s eyes?
A. They rely on the Internet to socialize. B. They are less confident in themselves.
C. They have difficulty in communicating. D. They are unwilling to make new friends.
30. Why do many young people avoid meeting new people?
A. They think it troublesome. B. They are busy with their study.
C. They fear to disappoint their friends. D. They want to do meaningful work.
31. Why does the author write the text?
A. To stress the importance of friends.
B. To give tips on how to meet new people.
C. To encourage people to meet new people.
D. To display the disadvantages of Generation-Y.
D 29. A 30. A 31. C

根据最后一段“But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. (但结识新朋友很重要。生命太短暂,所以遇见所有你能遇见的人,努力走出去笑一笑)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是鼓励人们认识新朋友。故选C项。

Recent research reveals the harmful mental health effects caused by social media use, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ( 与自杀相关的) tendencies and self-harm. Adolescents who spend more than three hours per day on social media face twice the risk of poor mental health outcomes.
Addictive feeds — designed to make use of personal data to intensify (增强) users’ content that will keep them on the platform for as long as possible — have dramatically raised the risk to young users’ well-being and made our children addicted to these social media outlets.
In the first seven years after addictive feeds were introduced, suicide rates for 10-to 14-year-old girls doubled and hospitalization for suicidal tendencies and attempts increased nearly twice for all adolescents.
Instead of responding to the problem, social media have made great efforts to keep and capture user engagement, and the results have been catastrophic. Beyond the direct harm of social media addiction, the collection of children’s data by these giant companies puts our kids at huge risk, leaving them vulnerable (易受伤害的) by having their location and other personal data tracked, shared and sold online. As a consequence, that data is at greater risk of falling into the wrong hands — including. human traffickers, identity thieves and others who might prey on (坑害) young people.
We will not stand by (支持) and watch an arms race among social media mega-corporations (大型企业) over who can best profit from our children’s pain and addiction. That is why we should use and are using every tool at our fingertips to fight back against these damaging practices: from the courthouse to the statehouse.
32. What can we learn about addictive feeds?
A. They are food that can easily satisfy people.
B. They are Internet content that can get people addicted.
C. They are kept on the platform just for a short period of time.
D. They are personal data stored on the Internet for convenience.
33. Which of the following best describes the author’s purpose in mentioning statistics(数据) such as “suicide rates for 10-to 14-year-old girls doubled”?
A. To create an emotional response in the reader.
B. To show how effective social media has become at keeping users engaged.
C. To offer a balanced view of the effects of social media on young people.
D. To provide evidence that supports the argument about social media’s harmful effects.
34. Which word can best replace the underlined word “catastrophic” in paragraph 4?
A. destructive B. positive C. unique D. effective
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It emphasizes the author’s support for social media companies.
B. It describes positive effects of social media on children’s well-being.
C. It explains how social media companies can address the mental health issues.
D. It calls for increased control on social media companies to protect young users.
B 33. D 34. A 35. D
根据第二段“Addictive feeds — designed to make use of personal data to intensify (增强) users’ content that will keep them on the platform for as long as possible — have dramatically raised the risk to young users’ well-being and made our children addicted to these social media outlets.(成瘾饲料——通过利用个人数据来强化用户的内容,以尽可能延长其在平台上的停留时间——已显著增加了年轻用户的身心健康风险,并使我们的孩子对这些社交媒体平台产生依赖)”可知,成瘾饲料是指能够让人们上瘾的网络内容。
根据第二段“Addictive feeds — designed to make use of personal data to intensify (增强) users’ content that will keep them on the platform for as long as possible — have dramatically raised the risk to young users’ well-being and made our children addicted to these social media outlets.(成瘾饲料——通过利用个人数据来强化用户的内容,以尽可能延长其在平台上的停留时间——已显著增加了年轻用户的身心健康风险,并使我们的孩子对这些社交媒体平台产生依赖)”可知,作者在第三段提出了“suicide rates for 10- to 14-year-old girls doubled”之类的数据,是为了提供证据支持关于社交媒体有害影响的论点。
根据第三段“In the first seven years after addictive feeds were introduced, suicide rates for 10-to 14-year-old girls doubled and hospitalization for suicidal tendencies and attempts increased nearly twice for all adolescents.(在引入成瘾饲料后的头七年里,10至14岁女孩的自杀率增加了一倍,所有青少年因自杀倾向和自杀未遂而住院的人数增加了近一倍)”和划线词所在句“Instead of responding to the problem, social media have made great efforts to keep and capture user engagement, and the results have been catastrophic.(社交媒体没有对这个问题做出回应,而是付出了巨大的努力来保持和吸引用户的参与,结果是catastrophic)”可知,社交媒体并未对于青少年的自杀现象做出回应,却努力保持、吸引客户,这个后果是灾难性的,划线词与destructive(破坏性的,毁灭性的)意思相近。
根据最后一段“We will not stand by (支持) and watch an arms race among social media mega-corporations (大型企业) over who can best profit from our children’s pain and addiction. That is why we should use and are using every tool at our fingertips to fight back against these damaging practices: from the courthouse to the statehouse.(我们不会坐视社交媒体巨头之间的军备竞赛,看谁能最大限度地从我们孩子的痛苦和成瘾中获利。这就是为什么我们应该使用并且正在使用我们手边的一切工具来反击这些破坏性的做法:从法院到州议会)”可知,该段呼吁采取一切手段,加强对社交媒体公司的控制,以保护年轻用户,避免其受到伤害。

Along the Ring of Fire
Off the coast of Alaska, the lava rises through cracks (裂缝) at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. It flows like toothpaste pressed from a tube. Spreading and erupting, the earth slowly builds a new island.
Along the Pacific coast of South America, one part of the earth’s surface gradually moves toward another. Although difficult to believe, the rocky outer surface of Earth is not solid; rather, it is broken up into huge pieces called plates(板块). ___36___, the action can sometimes lead to volcanic activity.
These things take place thousands of miles apart, yet they are connected. Surrounding the Pacific Ocean is a circle of volcanoes that includes more than half of the world’s active volcanoes.___37___.
The Ring of Fire spreads from the west coast of South America northward to Alaska. It goes left at the Aleutian Islands and crosses the Pacific Ocean. Then it heads down the east coast of Asia toward New Zealand.
___38___. In 1883 Krakatoa erupted four times. The third eruption was so loud that it could be clearly heard 3,000 miles away. Krakatoa threw a large dust cloud nearly 50 miles into the air. ___39___. During four days in June, Pinatubo threw out more than 20 million tons of broken pieces into the air, destroying many homes.
Some volcanoes erupt more quietly, with lava flowing through the cracks in Earth’s surface. This type of volcano is found in Hawaii. ___40___.
A. This area is called the Ring of Fire
B. Although the plates are connected
C. As the plates move past one another
D. The Ring of Fire is also where most earthquakes happen
E. Major volcanic eruptions along the Ring of Fire make history
F. In 1991 Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted after 600 quiet years
G. Lava from a volcano tends to advance slowly but still causes great damage
C 37. A 38. E 39. F 40. G

根据空前“Although difficult to believe, the rocky outer surface of Earth is not solid; rather, it is broken up into huge pieces called plates.(尽管难以置信,但事实是地球的岩石外表面并不坚固,它分成几个板块。)”和空后“the action can sometimes lead to volcanic activity(这种移动有时会导致火山活动。)”
根据空前“(Surrounding the Pacific Ocean is a circle of volcanoes that includes more than half of the world’s active volcanoes.)” 故选A项。
根据空后“In 1883 Krakatoa erupted four times. During four days in June, Pinatubo threw out more than 20 million tons of broken pieces into the air, destroying many homes.(1883年,喀拉喀托火山喷发了四次。Pinatubo火山向空中扔出了超过2000万吨的碎片,摧毁了许多房屋。)”可知, E项(环太平洋火山带的主要的火山喷发载入了史册。)能够与下文连接通顺。该选项的eruptions与后面的erupted是相关的词汇。空格后面是对选项进行具体的举例。故选E项。
【39题详解】

Students Escaped Safely in Falmont Earthquake
By Li Hua, School Reporter
FALMONT – On 17th March, at 2:27 p. m. , an earthquake hit Falmont County.
Luckily, 476 students and 36 teachers at Falmont Primary School escaped safely. Only 5 students got slight injuries.
When the floor began to shake, head teacher Alice Brown was teaching. Her students quickly moved under their desks, head first, and held on to the desk legs. Miss Brown opened the classroom door at once. Although glass broke and things fell, the students stayed still and calm.
The moment the shaking stopped, Miss Brown led the class to exit in an orderly line, covering their heads with their hands. In just one minute and twenty seconds, all of them reached the playground. After a roll call, everyone was safe.
“We practise earthquake safety procedures twice a year,” said Miss Brown, “so the kids were calm enough to protect themselves.”

Caught in a flood
Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
“Mum, Dad,” said Mary suddenly, “I think we should leave here right away!”
“No,” said Dad. “It’s too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded.”
“We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let’s just leave! I’m really scared!” cried Mary.
“We can’t do that, honey,” explained Mum, “otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!”
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside. “Don’t open the door!” shouted Mum and Dad at the same time, “The water may flood in!”
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. “Mary, don’t worry. Everything’s going to be OK,” she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do?

Paragraph1:
After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad made a decision. They decided to move to the second floor with their prepared supplies, because the flood was certain to rise soon. They carried the bag of documents and food upstairs quickly. Dad kept turning a bright flashlight on and off to send rescue signals. Mary held Mum’s hand tightly, and the three of them sat by the window, comforting each other through the frightening waiting. Before long, muddy water filled the whole first floor, which proved their decision right.
Paragraph2:
Finally, the rain stopped. The flood stopped rising as well, and their house stayed solid. Minutes later, Mary spotted a rescue boat passing by her neighborhood. She shouted and waved wildly to catch attention, and rescuers saw their flashlight signals immediately. The whole family got on the boat safely and were taken to a safe shelter. After this disaster, Mary learned that calmness and family bond could help people get through any danger.
