Generally speaking, a milu deer grows to a height of 1.2 meters. And a grown-up deer weighs about 150 to 200 kilograms. In summer, the deer eat grass. In autumn, they eat nuts and fruits which fell from the trees of the forest. In winter, when there is very little other food, they eat the dry leaves of the trees. The grown-up females give birth to their young in summer. When the baby deer are strong enough to stand on their feet, they join their mothers. It’s very difficult to catch them because they can smell danger from a long way away. Besides, they can hear and see very well, too. The difference between a milu deer and other deer is that the coat of milu deer is bright red in summer and gray in winter, and that their feet are bigger and their tails are longer.

Last summer, 14-year-old Jake joined a beach cleanup volunteer program in his town. He went there, thinking he would only spend a few hours picking up trash and then go home.
On his first day at the beach, Jake and other volunteers saw a small sea turtle tangled in plastic netting. The turtle could not move and looked helpless. Working gently and carefully, they slowly cut the netting away and set it free. When the turtle swam back into the clear water, Jake felt a strong sense of purpose. He realized that his small actions could truly help living things in nature and make a real difference.
After that, Jake returned to the beach every weekend without delay. He invited his friends to join him and organized regular clean-up events for the whole community. He also gave small talks at school to teach other students about the harm of ocean pollution. Later, he started an environmental club at school to encourage more teenagers to care for the sea and protect wildlife.
By the end of the summer, Jake and his club members had cleared more than 500 pounds of rubbish from the beach. Local people and officials were greatly moved by their efforts. The government even built a new recycling center near the beach to reduce waste from reaching the ocean.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize large amounts of information so that they are able to find it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
28. The passage begins with two questions to ________.
A. describe how to use the Internet B. introduce the main topic
C. show the author’s attitude D. explain how to store information
29. What can we learn about the first experiment?
A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The second group did not understand the information.
D. The first group did not try to remember the information.
30. In transactive memory, people ________.
A. remember how to find the information
B. keep the information in mind
C. change the quantity of information
D. organize information like a computer
31. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A. We are becoming more intelligent. B. We have poorer memories than before.
C. We are using memory differently. D. We need a better way to get information.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. A 31. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了互联网对人类记忆方式的影响。

【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.(这并不意味着我们变得更聪明或更不聪明,但毫无疑问,我们使用记忆的方式正在改变)”可知,根据Sparrow的研究,互联网的影响是我们使用记忆的方式不同了。故选C。

Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. The hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Husbands and wives use doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for forgetting their wedding anniversary. She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
32. What does the underlined expression “work like a dog” in paragraph 2 mean?
A Work very hard. B. Have an unhappy life.
C. Compete for the same things. D. Become successful.
33. If a man experiences a failure at work, what might his wife say to encourage him?
A. It will rain cats and dogs. B. Every dog has its day.
C. You lead a dog’s life. D. You are in the doghouse.
34. Which of the following has the same meaning as “leave things untouched”?
A. Become sick as a dog. B. Teach an old dog new tricks.
C. Let sleeping dogs lie. D. Make people dog-tired.

D
A. Work very hard.
35. What’s the text mainly about?
A. Expressions in American culture. B. Dog’s influence on American culture.
C. A fun way to learn English. D. Some expressions with the word dog.
